Review of The New Glucose Revolution Life Plan: Discover How to Make the Glycemic Index the Foundation for a Lifetime of Healthy Eating (Paperback)

I was very skeptical about this method of blood glucose control, but after a friend tried it and lost five pounds, I thought I'd give it a try.

I shop according to the pantry lists in the book and find that my family's overall food costs have decreased - along with my weight, thanks to the "bigger bodies" meal plan sample. Also, it gives a couple of different nutrient profiles (% cho, % fat, % pro) to choose from. I like the Paleolithic profile (Caveman), personally.

I like most of the recipes in the book and am able to change them a little to suit my tastes while maintaining the nutritional integrity of the dish. The food is not dull or boring. I really like the meal suggestions - they teach me what my meals need to "look" like. The authors even included a meal planner suitable for kids, which is great, since Type II is a hereditary condition.

Best of all, I have been able to reduce my bg levels to a normal range, lose weight and have A LOT of energy to get the execise in that completes my lifestyle goal.

There are couple of recipes that sounded like something I would like, but turned out not very tasty, so I scored the book a "4". Still, I highy recommend this book.
I am a skeptic, turned believer.

Review of The New Glucose Revolution for Diabetes: The Definitive Guide to Managing Diabetes and Prediabetes Using the Glycemic Index (Marlowe Diabetes Library) (Paperback)

The book deals with dieting viewed from the "Glycemic Index" point of view which in my opinion is a long overdue consideration in the management of diabetes. The book has sections for Type I Diabetics, Type II Diabetics, "Understanding Diabetes", "Managing Diabetes", "Managing Prediabetes", "Pregnancey, Birth, Breast Feeding and Diabetes", and Dietary Tables.

An example of the change of view, is the allowability of fructose in the diabetic diet.In my 1910 Encyclopedia Brittanica the article on diabetes says that fructose is a preferable sweetener to glucose or sucrose. For the last 50 years, the dietetic attitude has been to minimize any sugar in the diet, including fructose."The New Glucose Revolution" on the other hand says, "It (fructose) stands out from the crowd (of sweeteners), being sweeter than sugarproviding the same number of calories, but having only one third the GI(Glycemic Index). So you can use less fructose to achieve the same level of sweetness, and as a result, consume fewer calories and experience a much smaller rise in your blood glucose levels."This quotation demonstrates the viewpoint of this book in its balanced discussions of glycemic index, and the reduction in calories for weight control.Oddly, it vindicates some of the medicine of our Victorian ancestors as well.

Review of The New Glucose Revolution Low GI Vegetarian Cookbook: 80 Delicious Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes Made Easy with the Glycemic Index (Paperback)

When my husband developed acid reflux, it was recommended that he lower his carb intake. As long time lacto vegetarians (no fish, meat or eggs, yes to dairy), this sounded particularly challenging.

I bought 3 different low carb cookbooks from Amazon a month ago: "Low-carb Vegetarian" by Celia Brooks Brown, "Carb Conscious Vegetarian: 150 Delicious Recipes For Healthy Lifestyle" by Robin Robertson and "The New Glucose Revolution Low GI Vegetarian Cookbook: 80 Delicious Vegetarian and Vegan Recipes Made Easy with the Glycemic Index" by Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller

After a month of consistent cooking I have rarely used Brown's "Low-carb Vegetarian" which is laden with ~50% recipes that use eggs. There are some great recipes in there if you eat eggs though.

On the other hand, my copy of "Carb Conscious Vegetarian: 150 Delicious Recipes For Healthy Lifestyle" by Robin Robertson is a bit dog-eared already. Delicious, innovative recipes with new ways to use foods common to the vegetarian and wonderful exploring of unusual but easily available new veggies and protein options.

"The New Glucose Revolution Low GI Vegetarian Cookbook" by Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller was rich with information and great recipes. It taught me a lot.

But by far Robertson's "Carb Conscious Vegetarian" is the best.

I will say that I don't know either of these authors and am doing this to help a buyer who may be wondering which one to get...

By the way, a low carb/lower acid diet has really eased the acid reflux my husband suffers from. We eat a main meal during the day and a protein drink at night, even if working: switched when consuming. And I am starting to lose weight...

Hope this helps!
