Review of The Gourmet Prescription: High Flavor Recipes for Lower Carbohydrate Diets (Hardcover)

This is a very nice book. I bought this book (The Gourmet Prescription) along with another book by F. McCullough. This book by D. Chud, "The Gourmet Prescription" presenting very unique approaches (especiallyhome smoking) to improving flavor in low-carb, low fat dishes. The recipesare unique and probably not found elsewhere. However, I probably would use this book for "special occasions", not everyday use. Many ofthe recipes are longer, require more ingredients, and/or require that theyou have prepared special condiments and sauces (the book tells you how toprepare these condiments, usually using the smoker). Now doubt the recipesare high in flavor, and very unique (i.e. you aren't going to findtechniques like these in other books). The downside is that the recipesare time-consuming (considering you have to prepare the condiments ahead oftime). The pictures are beautiful --its definitely gourmet(many ingredientsmight be hard to find for those not living in urban centers).I also don'tknow if kids would like this kind of food if they aren't used it eating"gourmet restaurent" type food.I found the McCullough book tobe more practical and down-to-earth. Another book I like very much for lowcarb people is "The Complete Meat Cookbook" by Bruce Aidells andDenis Kelly which tells you everything you want to know about selecting andpurchasing the best in beef, pork, lamb and veal for easy to prepare dishes, both classic expensive cuts (how to get the best out of an expensive cuts)as well as how to make tender dishes out of the cheaper cuts.Since theAidells book isn't particularly oriented to low-carb, some of the sidedishes are high carb. All three boooks have a place on my bookshelf, sincethere are occasions when I'll want to prepare a special meal using the highflavor techniques described in this book, "The GourmetPrescription".

Review of More Low-Carb Meals in Minutes: A Three-Stage Plan for Keeping It Off (Paperback)

This is a low fat/some good fat cookbook masquerading as a Low Carb cookbook. One dinner recipe Peasant Soup with Cheese Toast has more than 45 grams of carb per serving.Another dinner of Creole Chicken, Brown Rice and Watermelon tops out at more than 60 gr carbs for one serving.I honestly have not looked at each and every recipe, but just glancing through this books says it is not what it is titled.

Product Description
The meals presented here are geared to long-term weight loss without compromising nutrition or flavor. The recipes are not only low in carbohydrates but also low in saturated fat, featuring lean proteins. More Low-Carb Meals in Minutes is based on a formula that shows readers how to reintroduce carbs into the diet, without regaining their lost weight, through three phases. Each phase includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with a total of 63 meals and 105 recipes emphasizing fresh vegetables, monounsaturated olive and canola oils, and lean meats and fish. Also included are Super Speed Suppers (15-minute dinners), Weekend Meals, Entertaining, color photographs, and a wealth of practical tips. And thanks to the author's advanced degree from the Cordon Bleu Institute, these recipes are both healthy and delicious.

Review of Low Carb High Flavor Recipes Made Easy (Paperback)

I have nearly every low carb cookbook known to man, but this one is definitly my favorite. It's not for those just starting out with low carb (meaning, those on Induction levels) since Fiona is more liberal with fruits and certain vegetables that are not permitted in the beginning. But once you've moved on to Ongoing Weight Loss phases and beyond (or if you're just low carb in general) this will quickly become a favorite. Since I am nearly at goal weight I've had to lower calories significantly and that is why this cookbook caters so perfectly to me. Although she does have some more "luxurious" dishes with rich ingredients, most of the recipes utilize lean meats and good fats (like olive oil) over things like lard or butter. (I've found most other low carb cookbooks use excessive fat, meaning a dish could have 700 calories or more at times). Some exceptionaly good recipes include the roasted red bell pepper and feta cheese fritatta, the roasted chicken quarters with pear (not the exact title), the mashed cauliflower, the turnip and rutabaga chips, the lamb chops with tomato sauce (not exact title) and her breakfast shakes. I'm still working my way through this book, but I have yet to be disappointed...

Product Description
In this timely book, Fiona Carns offers not just delicious low-carb recipes - most of which take only 5 to 20 minutes to prepare - but a great eating strategy designed around energy breakfasts, quick snacks, and gourmet dinners. For starters, try the Ribeye and Fennel with Avocado or the Lemongrass and Ginger Chicken Balls. Then choose from such delicious dishes as Baked Salmon in Balsamic and Maple Syrup with Shaved Fennel or Lamb, Eggplant, and Feta with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce. Included is a recommended products section listing the staples of this diet, carbohydrate levels for each product, and basic preparation techniques. A useful chart arranges foods in the categories of Enjoy, Limit, and Avoid, and a section on dishes tailored for kids makes a healthy diet fun for the whole family.
