Review of Eating on the Run - 3rd Edition (Paperback)

I rarely recommend a book, but I'm feeling that I must now! The book is called Eating on the Run by Evelyn Tribole. This book brings weight management down to its barebones--you learn what your body needs as basic nutrition, how to eat and feel satisfied, the problems with diets and vitamins and how they can hurt you, dispels myths, and how to apply good eating habits efficiently w/o trading taste or satisfaction. You know me, I LOOOOOVE food but I'm just not much of a cook. And like everyone else, I'm just trying to figure out how to take care of my body.
This isn'ta cookbook, but there are several recipes throughout the book--many and enough to have you up and going with good eating habits. Since it is geared to busy people, it's an easy, straightforward read that really helps you to understand weight management and how to apply it. In other books, I usually learn a lot then forget it because it just isn't realistic.
The author has a regular column (Recipe Makeover) in Shape magazine, is the spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, and qualified for the 1984 Olympic marathon event. Therefore, she has the credentials.
So, in my most sincerist verve, I totally recommend reading this book as a way to change eating habits and understand weight management for yourself.

Review of Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works (Paperback)

I really have to disagree with Yvonne's comment "But obese people do not start being overweight due to dieting!"As a child I always enjoyed eating, but Iwas not overweight. In fact, I didn't think too much about food at all.I went on my first diet at age 15, with the goal of losing 5 lbs. After I lost5 lbs by eating alot of salad and little else, I could fit into all my jeans and a fewpeoplecommented on how good I looked.Iwas hooked.....Ilost another 5 lbs. and looked great (probably too thin, but I thought Ilookedgreat!), but the constant restricting and hunger made me start to obsess about food!I would end a 2 day fast by eating an entire bag of cookies....Myfirst diet was the beginning of a 20 year cycle of fasting and compulsive eating that left me 75 lbs overweight.I've been in lots of Compulsive Eating support groups over the years and I've heard the same story. If you put a child ina room filled with candy and junk food and tell her to eat whatever she wants, thefood will quickly lose much of it's appeal......or tell her nottoeat one bite and see how importantthatfood becomes....

This book addresses many of the issues behind compulsive eating, and with lots of work on my part,it made me sane again (and 60lbs lighter).

Review of Intuitive Eating: A Recovery Book For The Chronic Dieter; Rediscover The Pleasures Of Eating And Rebuild Your Body Image (Mass Market Paperback)

This book has a lot of great information and advice to help dieters cross back over the fence to adopt a more healthy attitude to food, eating and weight.Unfortunately, it also has a lot of contradictions which a sensible editor should have sorted out.The book sets out 10 principles of why dieters will forever be losing the weight loss battle and explains how to relearn to listen, feel and feed our body's natural hunger. This aspect of the book is great, and there are lots of scientific references to back them up.However, while on the one hand telling you to trust your body to select the healthy food it needs, the authors spoil it all in the last chapter (principle 10) by then prescribing a healthy low-fat diet plan. This seems totally out of place on a book purporting to teach you to eat intuitively. As some other reviewers have said, dieters don't need another "plan" to follow.Instead they need to learn how to survive without the prop of plans that forever fail them.It seems the authors are themselves stuck in their category of "careful eaters" and can't let go.But this is just criticism of a small part of the book.I would recommend "The Seven Secrets of Slim People" by Vikki Hansen and Shawn Goodman in addition to this book to reinforce the good parts.
