From Robert Atkins and Anorexia, to Fast Food and Globalization, to John Harvey Kellogg and Vegetarianism, "Diets And Dieting" is a wealth of information that offers a unique, comprehensive, informed, informative, 'user friendly', and very highly recommended contribution to personal, professional, academic, and community library Health & Medicine and Cultural Studies reference collections.

Product Description

Diets and dieting have concerned - and sometimes obsessed - human societies for centuries. The dieters' regime is about many things, among them the control of weight and the body, the politics of beauty, discipline and even self-harm, personal and societal demands for improved health, spiritual harmony with the universe, and ethical codes of existence. In this innovative reference work that spans many periods and cultures, the acclaimed cultural and medical historian Sander L. Gilman lays out the history of diets and dieting in a fascinating series of articles.

Review of Sport Nutrition: An Introduction to Energy Production and Performance (Paperback)

The publisher's back cover text reads:

"Sport Nutrition: An Introduction to Energy Production and Performance is an introductory-level text that gives students a comprehensive understanding of the basics of nutrition as it relates to sport."

That is exactly what the book is, and what it does splendidly.

The book is comprehensive, and is a remarkable achievement for just two authors-generally such a book would be edited by one or two individuals and have numerous contributors.

The book has many illustrations and tables which help the reader's understanding and break up the text.

The book starts with the basics, the general principles of nutrition and fuel sources and goes on to discuss the physiology of digestion, the macronutrients, water, and the micronutrients. Discussions about supplements, weight management, eating disorders, and immune function round out the book.

The books scientific footings and information are solid, not faddish. The book is about theory and general practice. There is little information about current proprietary products.

Again, the book is a text for students of nutrition.

The wider market of athletes looking to improve their sport nutrition as a way of improving their performance may have to keep looking.

Although this book provides much depth missing from almost all such books directed to athletes, the practical take-home messages and key points are obscured by the details and are too difficult for most lay readers to easily grasp.

Although many will probably use this book as an authoritative reference frequently in the future, unless college-educated with a science background, or extremely persistent, lay athletes may put down the book before learning anything of practical use.

Review of Longevity in Action (Paperback)

After working for over 45 years and wondering how to manage my senior years, I read Mr Bull's book "Longevity in Action" with great interest. He did not let me down. His "been there, done that" approach to senior fitness is very motivating. Great reading for all ages.

Product Description
Although the life expectancy of Americans was rising, an alarming number of the author's family members, boyhood chums, and military buddies were passing away . . . years too soon! Then came the shattering blow when his dear wife, Alice, mother of their seven children, nearly succumbed to cancer at 59! It was then that Arnold Bull, an admittedly burned-out, chain-smoking "couch potato" took his life in another direction at the age of 62. He plunged headlong into research in preventive medicine, which led to the study of nutrition and physical fitness, eventually leading to his acquiring the title of America's Oldest Certified Aerobics Instructor.
This informative, lighthearted book, based largely on Arnold's motivational lecture series, is an inspiration to not only senior citizens, but to their offspring-the millions of Baby Boomers tentatively entering their 40s and 50s.

Review of Bursting With Energy: The Breakthrough Method to Renew Youthful Energy and Restore Health (Paperback)

This book takes scientific basics of nutrition and physiology and transcribe them into everyday language. The explanations for why things are the way they are with losing weight are very helpful and provide a moderate level of knowledge, but enough to allow the reader to make informed personal decisions.I especially liked the position the author took of making small changes while building to a bigger goal.We all know of failure from trying to "bite off more than we could chew." Great book!Wonderful lessons!

Product Description
In this updated revision of his acclaimed book, "Bursting with Energy" Dr. Frank Shallenberger makes a clear connection between the amount of energy you have and the amount of aging you do, pointing out that, in medical terms, aging refers to a loss of function, not chronology. A thirty-year old with no loss of function is identical to a twenty-year-old, he says. And the same is true for fully functional people in their sixties-they are the same as thirty-year-olds. According to Shallenberger, the loss of functions that result from aging are themselves the result of energy loss: more energy, less aging; less energy, more aging. When Dr. Shallenberger discusses anti-aging methods, he is actually taling about improving energy production. His work with patients over the years has proven that an energy deficit is the root cause of every disease and sympton, from cancer, to fatigue, to obesity. Dr. Shallenberger believes that knowledge is power. Energy is the key, he says. As you learn to eliminate the bad habits that can seriously impair the production of energy and come o embrace the proven benefits outline in this book, you will discover firsthand the power of having maximum energy. Although you do grow older chronologically, you don't have to keep pace biologically. "Bursting with Energy" is all about feeling younger as you get older.

Review of Designing the Fitness Program: A Guide for Public Safety Organizations (Paperback)

I am a Physical Education teacher and purchased this book for the training and evaluation sections.I thought the training guide was particularly useful in summarizing the basic principles of fitness training. The evaluation section is exceptional and it is the first time I have seen such a thorough explanation in one book.I would highly recommend this book to anyone involved in fitness training or education even though it was directed to police and firefighters. It is well written and researched and I find it a very valuable tool in my field.

Product Description
Public safety work is dangerous, and the link between fitness and remaining injury-free has been well established by research. Designing the Fitness Program examines the physical demands on public safety officers, as well as an array of related health and safety issues. In proposing that each public safety organization implement a fitness program for its personnel, the author provides a variety of options for ensuring that the standards and test regimens adopted by a department are suitable, both in terms of individual members and the roles that they fulfill. His unique, thought-provoking analysis of test protocols will help organizations avoid many of the pitfalls associated with modern labor laws and declaring anyone, whether rehabilitated member or new recruit, fit for duty. Using his outlines for levels of participation and exercise prescription, a qualified fitness coordinator will be able to institute a viable program in any department, no matter how large or small the available budget. Whether fire or police, whether rural or metropolitan, public safety organizations worldwide will benefit from paying greater attention to the health and fitness of their members. This book is a prime tool for all concerned.

Review of Eating on the Run - 3rd Edition (Paperback)

I rarely recommend a book, but I'm feeling that I must now! The book is called Eating on the Run by Evelyn Tribole. This book brings weight management down to its barebones--you learn what your body needs as basic nutrition, how to eat and feel satisfied, the problems with diets and vitamins and how they can hurt you, dispels myths, and how to apply good eating habits efficiently w/o trading taste or satisfaction. You know me, I LOOOOOVE food but I'm just not much of a cook. And like everyone else, I'm just trying to figure out how to take care of my body.
This isn'ta cookbook, but there are several recipes throughout the book--many and enough to have you up and going with good eating habits. Since it is geared to busy people, it's an easy, straightforward read that really helps you to understand weight management and how to apply it. In other books, I usually learn a lot then forget it because it just isn't realistic.
The author has a regular column (Recipe Makeover) in Shape magazine, is the spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, and qualified for the 1984 Olympic marathon event. Therefore, she has the credentials.
So, in my most sincerist verve, I totally recommend reading this book as a way to change eating habits and understand weight management for yourself.

Review of Eat Away Diabetes (Paperback)

Eat Away Diabetes is extremely well researched and superbly written!Taking complex subject matter, the author uses practical explanations and analogies, thereby making diabetes much easier to understand. The information is current and extremely useful for people with Type 2 diabetes and those working to prevent this potentially devastating (but preventable) disease.Numerous charts and sidebars are used throughout which serve as excellent references in my practice as a registered dietitian. The author emphasizes the importance of exercise at length and explainsthe roles of fiber, fat, carbohydrates, protein, vitamin/mineral supplementation, and herbs.Ms. Napier also provides 28 days of menus and their accompanying recipes (which are healthy, creative, and tasty). This book will remain a useful resource in my professional practice and daily life!Thank you, Kristine Napier!

Review of Defeating Diabetes (Paperback)

This book gives comprehensive dietary and nutrition information to empower readers. Because diet and lifestyle factors are the primary causes of Type 2 diabetes, most Type 2's can control their diabetes completely. This is good news because the health problems that can occur as a result of untreated diabetes include blindness, early heart disease, and amputation of body parts. With over half of those with Type 2 not knowing they have it, following the suggestions in the book makes sense whether you have diabetes or not.
The authors explain ways to catch diabetes and pre-diabetes (the precursor to diabetes). They explain insulin resistance and point out that although being overweight puts one at high risk for diabetes, one can be thin and have insulin problems due to "metabolic obesity," which is explained further in the book.
Blood-sugar levels and factors affecting them are clearly explained. The myth that simple sugars are bad and complex carbohydrates are not is dispelled."This is not only a gross oversimplification; it is inaccurate. Simple carbohydrates are found in highly refined, nutrient-depleted foods like table sugar, but they are also found in highly nutritious whole foods like fruits and vegetables. Complex carbohydrates are found in heavily processed foods like white bread and pastries, but are also present in nutrient-dense foods such as wheat berries and beans."
Knowing glycemic indexes is important, but understanding how other foods affect blood-sugar control (like fats) is also important. Factors such as the following are considered: the number of grams of carbohydrate present; the type of sugar (glucose, fructose, sucrose, lactose); the amount and type of fiber present; the kind of the starch (amylose versus amylopectin); the form of the food (cooked, raw, dry, liquefied, paste, ground, or otherwise processed); and the presence of other components in the food or in foods eaten with the carbohydrate-rich food.
The authors offer a two-step process for dietary reform. "Step 1 - Take out the trash" and "Step 2 - Pile on the protectors."Trans fatty acids are an example of an item on the trash list.In a recent Nurses Health Study, replacing 2 % of calories from trans fatty acids with polyunsaturated fat reduced the risk for type 2 diabetes by 40%.
The authors pinpoint many health-promoting foods. For example, many whole plant foods contain phytochemicals and antioxidants, and blueberries are "one of the most protective foods on the planet."Their ability to quench free radicals from the body was found to be the highest, often 5 times higher than most other vegetables and fruits.Other protectors in food such as fiber, plant protein, and certain fats are given thorough treatments as well.
Another section of the book includes "Healthy Weight for Life." "Obesity . . .elevates your risk of most of the chronic degenerative diseases plaguing the Western world. The strength of this link cannot be ignored." The problems with high-protein diets are addressed, but you might be surprised to know that the problems with very-low-fat, high-fiber diets are addressed, as well. For example, the authors state that the very low fat diets often allow for too many refined carbohydrates, and this can be a problem.Another problem with too little fat in your diet will reduce the absorption of certain nutrients, and important foods like nuts and seeds, which are good sources of trace minerals and Vitamin E, may be overlooked. Seven steps to achieving a life-long healthy weight are given.
Two popular tools for diabetics - exchange lists and carbohydrate counters - are explained and reviewed. Both systems have their problems. For example, neither "adequately distinguishes among different forms of carbohydrate. Both systems favor animal over plant protein sources. . . . Neither system fully recognizes the huge variations in health effects of different types of fat." Practical information is given about understanding the glycemic index of foods, and sample menus (a week of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks) and suggested servings that ensure nutritional adequacy without excessive calories are included. This is especially helpful to diabetics who may be transitioning to the type of diet recommended in this book.
Many people still think of diabetes simply as a sugar problem. Though this is an important issue, there are many other issues, including fat, fiber and micronutrients of which one should be aware. "Making Sense of Sweets" gives information on both nutritive (those with calories) and nonnutritive (no significant calories) sweeteners. There are clear tables for each category including any cautions one should know.
Additional sections of the book include the following:
"Defensive Dining" includes advice for how to handle eating out.
"Survival of the Fittest" addresses the need for exercise and other fitness needs."It appears we can live longer simply by living well. What is more, it is not only the length of our lives that improves with fitness, but the quality of living." All facets of fitness are addressed including aerobics, weight training, flexibility, even emotional fitness and sleeping, and more.
"Self Care: A Daily Maintenance Routine" deals with how we need to take care of ourselves on a daily basis and includes a checklist for our daily assessments of ourselves.
"When Diet and Exercise Are Not Enough" deals with the different medications available to help control diabetes. In addition to prescription medications, the authors investigate vitamins, minerals, herbals, and botanicals.
Finally, "Kitchen Wizardry . . . Tricks of the Trade," helps people to understand what to buy when grocery shopping. It includes an extensive shopping list, suggestions for where to shop, information on reading food labels, and food storage guidelines. The book finishes with a delightful recipe selection to jump-start you on the road to good health and diabetes management.
Overall, the book is well documented with selected references appearing at the ends of each chapter.Defeating Diabetes is a practical, easy-to-read, well-thought-out guide to healthy living and diabetes management. The basics of the health issues that are used to defeat diabetes are sound advice for maintaining good health whether you have diabetes or not.

Review of From Here to Longevity: Your complete Guide for a Long and Healthy Life (Paperback)

I loved this book; I picked it up at the [store] because of the cool cover (shallow, I know, but read on), but within two minutes was so hooked that I couldn't put it down.We live in a society that is both obsessed with being thin, while at the same time grows increasingly unhealthy. Dr. Ray's premise is that we've come to expect degeneration, dependency and disease as a natural part of aging, when in fact all of these things can be retarded, or even eliminated. As a Stanford Med school educated Biochemist, Dr. Ray knows her stuff, and she shares this all important information in a way that is both fun to read and highly compelling.Want to live to experience true longevity, while being vibrant, fit and mentally alert?Start eating and exercising the way we're genetically programmed to do, and stop falling prey to fad diets and more drugs.Dr. Ray offers a bold new look at how to seize control of your health and your future. Warning:this book is recommended for people who are not afraid to look at their lives and their health in a whole new way, and who are willing to explode the myths of pharmaceuticals as cure-alls, and dieting as we know it as the way to health.

Product Description

Review of Lunch Lessons: Changing the Way We Feed Our Children (Paperback)

The photograph on the cover of this book is a bit misleading. The topic of "Lunch Lessons" has a lot more to do with improving American school hot lunch programs than it is about packing healthy brown bag lunches for your own child. It does include a list of recipes at the back of the book. Many sound great, like the "Three Cheese-Vegetable Strata" and the "High Protein Squares" (a homemade replacement for power bars). They also look very time-consuming.Although I haven't tried any of the recipes, it seems to me that making your own pizza dough for the "Pizza Wheels" might take a bit longer than anyone wants to spend making lunch. Actually, I think the recipes are really in here to inspire the people who make hot lunches in school cafeterias.

Like other reviewers I am interested improving school nutrition policies.I head a health committee at my daughter's school dedicated to improving nutrition and fitness for the students and their families. As such this book should be a perfect fit. Unfortunately for me, my daughter attends a private school and almost all of the information in this book, including the reference list in the back, is only helpful if your child attends a public school. (I've actually found more useful information on government web sites than I have in this book!)That doesn't mean it's been completly useless. There are a few great tidbits to be found here and there.I found the recommendation about "laptop lunches" really great.I don't think I would have found out about the company and their fabulous lunch boxes had it not been for this book. (The cover photograph shows a "laptop" lunchbox.)

In the end I think I would recommend this book to anyone interested in taking on the enormous problem of unhealthy school lunches in public schools. If you're looking for new ideas for your child's lunchbox there are probobly better books out there. If like me you're trying to improve the health policies at a private school there probably won't be many ideas in "Lunch Lessons" that you can use exactly as described.

Review of The Everything Total Fitness Book (Everything) [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I was delighted to find the "Everything Total Fitness Book" because I could not get excited about any of the other fitness resources I had found. It seems that every fitness book I looked at fell into one of two categories: (1) some fad diet/exercise program with a stern looking, very buff person on the cover or (2) some hippy-dippy nonsense about "refocusing energy" or "fitness chakras" etc.Besides, if you're like me, you're not interested in losing weight OR in putting on 50 lbs of straight bicep muscle, you just want to keep in shape and improve your diet...Well, that's this book. The great thing about "Everything..." is that it approaches the subject assuming nothing about you or your fitness agenda -- therefore, the book begins with the very basics of nutrition and exercise and goes from there. The author's unassuming, straightforward approach is very refreshing in that it presents the information matter-of-factly and in a manner that is easily accessible to those who know little about the subject. Also, in addition to being comprehensive with respect to what you put into and what you do with your body, it tries to take into account situations that might fall outside the norm assumed by most of the book (e.g., pregnancy, diabetes, osteoperosis, etc.)
So, if you're like me and are interested in fitness (as opposed to "dieting" or "weight training") then this is an excellent book to get you started off with improving your lifestyle.

Review of Eat To Win For the 21st Century (Paperback)

As a follower of the original Eat to Win diet, I was really impressed with Robert Haas and the information he laid out 20 years ago.The Eat to Win diet helped my performance in triathlons immensely.

I must admit, I strayed from this diet over the years, trying low-carb diets along the way.So when I found out that a new Eat to Win book was out, I jumped on it.What I found was an update to the same great ideas in a book that is not well layed out.

This diet still makes the most sense to me.Smaller portions of protein, low-fat, and high complex carbohydrates. However, it seems that Mr. Haas has an axe to grind with the authors of the low-carb diets, because he spends too many pages bashing them, and not enough pages describing his own ideas. There's no doubt that the low-carb craze made the original Eat to Win diet unpopular, what with the baked potato being one of its main staples! If Atkins made your bestselling book obsolete, you'd be mad too.I just wish he had kept most of his negativity to himself.People who go on diets are looking for positive words.

Secondly, readers looking for sample menus will be disappointed.Good and bad foods are listed, as are portion sizes. But unlike the original book, the reader has to be the creative one and design the diet to his or her needs. This may be a blessing in disguise since you're eating what you want to eat, and not what someone is telling you to eat.But there are a lot of people who pick up books with the attitude "just tell me exactly what to eat, and I'll eat it" who won't succeed with this book.

The other problem I have is that the recipes in the back of the book are arranged randomly with a fish dish on one page, and an oatmeal recipe on the next.I wish he had at least arranged them into breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The original book was much better organized.

Finally, the chapter on animal protein seems to be a ringing endorsement for switching over to a vegetarian diet. And his paranoia with Mad Cow disease may turn some people off.

Bottom line...like any diet book, read the good stuff, and ignore all of the excess garbage. If you can sift through Mr. Hass's low-carb grudges, there's a good diet waiting for you.

Review of Body Sense: Balancing Your Weight and Emotions (Paperback)

Most books about weighing more than you want, or having eating disorders, treat the issue like a chemistry problem.Change what you put in your mouth, and the weight will reach more appropriate levels. While that's certainly true to a point, many people are using food as a source of badly needed emotional solace. If they ignore their emotional needs, inappropriate uses of food may well continue. That's the situation that this book approaches.
Body Sense is unusually good at helping you locate sources of explicit and repressed emotions that can be influencing your eating.I was astonished at how many childhood memories the questions dredged up that I had not thought about in 40 or more years. The book also wisely focuses you on identifying which foods trigger binges and other inappropriate behavior, allergic reactions, blood sugar highs and lows, and other individual-specific reactions. There's also some basic information about how body chemicals affect mood and physiology, and ways that choice of foods can help.
Body Sense overcomes my main complaint about books offering new diets in that they usually offer one solution for everyone, and each person has to follow the advice pretty rigidly. As more research is conducted, it is becoming clear that individual reactions to foods vary quite a lot.For example, Live Right 4 Your Type shows that blood type is one important differentiating factor. In the future, we will probably learn more. For example, other research has shown that some people just have slower metabolisms than others, and will weigh more than people who eat more.Until better methods of finding out about our bodies is available, carefully understanding our reactions to food in an emotional and physiological sense is a logical and constructive step to take.
I had three negative reactions to the book that concerned me, as much as I liked what I described above.
First, we all have had bad experiences in our lives. If we are 5 pounds overweight, do we need to drag through all of that?10 pounds overweight?20 pounds overweight?30 pounds overweight?I'm not sure that this degree of psychological self-examination is required unless the degree of eating disorder is pretty great. If more examination is needed, shouldn't we have some professional help?
Second, the book doesn't say much about exercise except to warn against overdoing it.Most people would benefit from more fitness from exercise more than they would from losing a few pounds.I can imagine that people have very big hang-ups about exercise from their psychological backgrounds that need to be addressed as well.I was surprised that a book called Body Sense didn't include this topic.
Third, the process described here would take many months to do for most people. How many people will have the persistence and patience to work through this many issues on their own?In my experience, very few.The process here needs either some streamlining, or some way to make a person want to keep pursuing it.
Ultimately, who's to say that your weight is the biggest symptom you should be challenging? After all, it's mostly social norms that cause people to even think about their weight.I would argue that the harm we do to others and ourselves outside of how we eat is often worse.Perhaps the psychological approach here should be more like in Life Strategies, in trying to identify where change is needed first . . . before launching off into dealing with that area.
What can you do today that will be positive, gratifying, and something you would be proud to share with the world?

Product Description
'The Secrets to Permanent Weight Loss' Is the first publication of its kind on the subjects of our deceptive diet industry, your specific challenges in weight management, and how to make your next diet your final diet for life. It serves a two-fold purpose in educating the reader. First, it exposes most of the diet industry as the financial predator that it is in our country by outlining in detail how you and I are misled by false information, exaggerated promises, and only 'partial truths' about what it takes to lose weight and keep it off. In this time of 'national crisis' where most Americans are overweight and levels of obesity on the rise, you will learn why, with all the science and nutritional breakthroughs in recent years, most diets, including your last one, failed to give you the desired results. You will discover just how much information is left out and how insulting (to you) weight loss advertisements truly are. Second, it provides you with a roadmap for success in weight management that is as detailed and personalized as it can be without personal consultation. It forces you to extract, from your own mind, the true passions that distract you from food, exposes your faulty thinking that has influenced your past and present, and offers a solution to all the challenges that you face in losing and controlling your weight. On the plus side, you will come away with an understanding that you can and will be successful, even with all your faults and lapses in will power. You will learn that nutrition (food selection) and exercise are truly minor issues in the grand scheme of your life and daily management of your impulses. You will come away with a new, enlightened understanding of your own nature. Finally, you will understand how and why the guidelines of weight management will work for you, and you will be offered real solutions. In your case, nothing will be left out of the equation, leaving you no choice but to succeed.
