Review of The Park Avenue Nutritionist's Plan: The No-Fail Prescription for Energy, Vitality & Weight Loss (Paperback)

I'm a huge fan of Dr. Jana Klauer! I loved her first book, "How the Rich Get Thin," and I equally love the second. Of course, not all the advice in the second book is new, but it's highly inspiring (and entertaining)! We all know that, to lose weight and keep it off, we have to eat less and move more. Any diet book will tell you that. But Dr. Klauer's client stories and strategies offer motivation, the most important ingredient for weight loss! I'm glad she emphasizes her nutrition shakes. I've been drinking her shakes for about a year now, and I've also been recommending them to all my fitness clients (I'm a personal trainer specializing in weight loss). It's DIFFICULT to lose weight, but Dr. Klauer's shakes have helped at least 80 percent of my clientle lose weight. That's a HUGE success, given 95% of diets result in failure.

Review of For Your Body Only: Discover the Diet You Were Born to Eat (Hardcover)

In "For Your Body Only," Gregory Tefft elicudates his unique ideas about personalized nutrition based on a complex system of physiological typing combined with scientific testing. The concept is intriguing, and it seems fairly logical. But since this approach to nutrition is inherently complicated (there is no single approach that is right for everyone), presenting the information clearly becomes quite a challenge -- one that Dr. Tefft does not meet. While the book presents useful information, it is disorganized and confusing. The quality of the writing is generally poor. Dr. Tefft spends far too much time making accusations (instead of clearly stating his case), and he has a habit of making sweeping statements that smack of self-promotion. A thorough edit (to eliminate numerous typos) is sorely needed. Thus the three-star review.
Be aware, if you plan on committing yourself to Dr. Tefft's personalized nutrition program, you will need to spend a great deal of time studying this book and possibly performing additional research in order to create a personalized nutritional program. You need to know your blood type, and you need to perform other tests (hair and saliva) in order to determine your body type. Dr. Tefft offers this testing through his website, for a cost of $150 (hair and saliva) and $20 (blood type). You must calculate your daily caloric needs, consult lists of recommended/not recommended foods, and calibrate your personal nutrient levels based on your body type(s). An alternative, of course, is to consult with a personalized nutritionist such as Dr. Tefft, who will help you devise your personalized nutrition plan. If you are still interested in personalized nutrition, and you are willing to invest the time and money, this book is a good place to start.

Review of The Natural Fat-Loss Pharmacy (Paperback)

Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (2/07)

When I first looked at this book, my initial thought was "Oh no, not another book on dieting!"However, when I flipped through the pages to see if I would review it or not I was pleasantly surprised that indeed it was a "pharmacy" and not another dieting book.In fact, "The Natural Fat-Loss Pharmacy" may be the first and the only book about weight loss supplements that is based on proven and researched scientific facts, and on top of that, written by a medical doctor.

One of the authors, Harry Preuss, MD, is not only a professor at Georgetown Medical Center but he has dietary supplement and nutraceutical research centers that focus on obesity, heart disease and the ever growing insulin resistance. The scientific references in this book not only address the research conducted by Preuss but also by the Mayo Clinic and many European centers.

The contents of the book focus on: fat busters, insulin regulators, carbohydrate inhibitors, fat blockers, appetite suppressors as well as muscle builders. Each section thoroughly explains, in lay terms, the issue, the natural substance e.g. green tea, chromium, etc., possible illnesses if obesity isn't regulated and how to use the product.

One of the important factors I believe the authors included in "The Natural Fat-Loss Pharmacy" is their chapter 12 - The Natural Fat-Loss Pharmacy Supplement Program: Designing the Approach That's Right for You.After reading the book and understanding the natural supplements that are available, the authors' first suggestion is to partner up with a professional, and more importantly reiterate that the supplements alone will not substitute a healthy diet and exercise.Chapter 12 addresses the supplements in a condensed version and suggests considerations as well as gives case studies.Of all the case studies the authors present, it is highly unlikely that an interested reader wouldn't find themselves in one of them.

I've picked up many dieting books over the years and I must say this is the best that I have ever seen.Preuss and Gottlieb present the most concise version of many books put together. They leave out a lot of the filler that is in many books and only confuses the reader."The Natural Fat-Loss Pharmacy" is a must for anyone that wants to create a safe way to lose weight and then maintain it.

Review of Special Diets for Special Kids (Hardcover-spiral)

I disagree tremendously with the negative review listed for this book. The author never implies the diet will work for everyone and is the sole therapeutic answer. In my opinion, if you are even THINKING of implementing a gluten-free, casein-free diet for your child, this book is a must. Notonly does the author provide a thorough review of the literature &studies done on relevant treatments for autism, & defines many of theterms so readily used, she offers a ton of GREAT, KID-FRIENDLY recipes(great for ANY kids that need to be dairy- and gluten-free, regardless ofthe reason). The author presents the information without bias, allowingthe reader to form their own conclusions whether the diet would be helpful. And while, yes, the diet may be difficult to implement (since casein andgluten are so pervasive in our foods), it offers a SAFE, alternativeapproach that we have seen work for MANY, MANY people in conjuction withother therapies. And as a medical professional, I was more skeptical thanmost that there could be any link with food & behavior before I heardand saw it for myself over and over and over first hand.If I had a childwith autism I would CERTAINLY TRY this.I would have nothing to lose andeverything to gain.

Review of Overcoming Overeating: How to Break the Diet/Binge Cycle and Live a Healthier, More Satisfying Life (Mass Market Paperback)

The philosophy presented in this book is counter to nearly all conventional western views regarding dieting and exercise as the best means to achieving acceptable health levels.A very large percentage of the population constantly diets, and yet we are becoming more and more obese as a society; thus the view of the authors is that dieting is not working and is not a logical long term solution. The authors stress the importance of looking beyond dieting (in fact giving up dieting altogether - the logic being diets are causing more obesity than healthy lives in the long run based on concurrently rising diets and obesity levels) and assessing the real influences that cause people to overeat.

The authors point out that people generally eat for two reasons; physiological (the physical body telling us we are hungry), and psychological (eating for enjoyment despite not being physically hungry).Anyone who has been unable to resist that piece of cake or bag of chips even after a fulfilling meal will be able to relate immediately.Demand feeding, the art of feeding your body only on a physiological level, is presented as the only viable and lasting strategy for a healthy relationship with food.Demand feeding also encompasses the notion that separating the two modes of eating forces one to confront the real issues that cause psychological eating, permitting one to address those issues first.

The message put forth really hit home for me in its description of how bad habits generally are developed. When we are babies, we cry for food only when we are truly hungry at a physical level. These are instincts we are born with.Often times well meaning parents stuff their child's face with food to deal with other problems that cause the baby to be upset, and thus bad habits begin (using food to deal with other problems). This may temporarily cause a child to stop crying; however, the long term effect is that child is learning that food can solve other issues.Demand feeding (eating) encompasses the instincts we have as a baby; eating only when our bodies truly are telling us to eat. These same instincts, if properly applied as an adult, will permit us to let our physical bodies dictate the quantity of foods (and to a lesser degree, quality of foods) that are needed to operate and remain healthy, while at the same time not constantly leaving us open to physiological influences that cause overeating.

While I do not feel I am equipped to divulge the true essence of the theory presented in this material (why I recommend reading the book), it is important to note that the authors address many of the glaring concerns that arise from considering such a mindset, such as anxiety about overeating when diets are removed. These apprehensions are addressed on a continual basis as the book includes several real world examples and multiple Q&A chapters making it easy for one to quickly zone in on their personal and specific concerns.

I cannot comment on the long term effects as of yet; however I have certainly noticed some very positive short terms effects that have permitted me to discover issues unrelated to food that were causing me to overeat.I would recommend this book to anyone who has issues with eating too much food and is looking for a logical assessment of how to deal with it as opposed to mere changes in eating habits. There are some people with a genetic makeup that permit healthy bodies under near any eating style (lucky them) as well as and others whose obesity issues go well beyond just eating habits; but for the majority of those that fall somewhere in the middle, this book will apply and will be immensely valuable.

***Full Disclosure - as a male reading a book intended for females (something that only occurred to me after being 90% through the book - haha on me), I can assure that the insight brought forth in this book is equally applicable for males. The authors seem to be known for working with women; however, overeating is clearly gender neutral, and I assure you the content of the book is as well.

Review of The Gut Flush Plan : The Breakthrough Cleansing Program to Rid Your Body of the Toxins That Make You Sick, Tired, and Bloated (Hardcover)

I have been a big ALG fan for a while, but this book takes it a little too far.A few things I noticed (I did not read from cover to cover)

--This book seems to almost require purchase of her products, which was not necessary to follow her plans in previous books. So I find that annoying.Buy my book and then my products.
--She is really moving to germaphobe land in my opinion.I can understand skipping the salad bar to avoid bacteria and stuff, but she seems to question having pets. She does not say get rid of your animals, restrict your contact, you get the idea.Really drifting toward living in a bubble.

I guess if you are really sick and not digesting food well this might be the book for you.But if you are just looking to feel and be more healthy and/or lose some weight, try the Fat Flush Plan and/or the Detox.I know when I do the original Fat Flush I feel great physically, emotionally, my skin clears, etc. However, this book just goes too far for my lifestyle to be actually doable.

Review of The pH Miracle for Weight Loss: Balance Your Body Chemistry, Achieve Your Ideal Weight (Hardcover)

May 13th 2005. THis is the only diet book I have read that promotes true health and a sustainable life-long diet.I lost my entire goal of 30 pounds in 6 weeks!!I feel great.I did not increase my exercise beyond my usual 30 minute daily walk.

Update: It has now been 16 weeks and I have effortlessly lost an additional 10 lbs. for a total of 40 (227 to 187) .Most significant learning is the paradigm shift I have had from weight loss to a sustainable healthy diet (finally at age 55).This diet seems daunting at first but you will find it easy to follow once you retrain your eating tastes.I say retrain because I had a life-long aversion to vegetables and the more I have eaten the more I like them. The way you feel after "pigging out" on vegetables is a far cry from the sugar hanovers and bloated feeling I have experienced in the past with other foods.I have found my pallate has made a permanent change and Ihave aquired a taste for alkaline foods. (You can still eat bread and pasta with spelt flour). It is now effortless and sustainable. What a permanent gift.Do yourself a favor and test it yourself for 90 days.Loose your goal and enjoy a lifelong new weight and size. Dr. Young's science is easily tested.Judge from your own direct experience not from others or your own skepticism.

As Jane Clayson of CBS Early Show said " The crew at The Early Show jokingly refers to it as my "swamp water": the concoction of GREENS I drink every morning, first thing, at 4:30 A.M.I know it sounds funny to say I drink my greens, but it's a quick, natural, oxygenating boost--healthier than any jolt of caffeine." (from the foreword to pH Miracle)

Product Description
Weight loss is not about fat; it's all about acid. So forget about fat grams, cholesterol, carbs, and calories: reaching your ideal weight is simply a matter of maintaining the delicate pH balance of the blood. And in his new book, Dr. Young offers a simple 7-step diet and exercise plan to help you change your shape and shed those pounds once and for all. How ever many pounds you need to lose before you reach your ideal, healthy weight--10, 30, 100--multiply it by two. That's the maximum number of days it will take to reach your goal with the plan. This revolutionary program explains which foods will help you obtain the best results and how the right type of water can make a big difference. Also including a specific exercise plan and menus with delicious recipes, THE pH MIRACLE FOR WEIGHT LOSS will help readers balance their body chemisty and lose those extra pounds for good.

Review of The Pritikin Edge: 10 Essential Ingredients for a Long and Delicious Life (Hardcover)

I found a lot of helpful information in this book.Heart disease is explained in a clear manner, and this book is an easy read because the author is so darn funny. I have so many favorite lines from this book. I was seriously cracking up while I read the book (and read it in a day off work, btw--very fast read).I do not follow everything to a T--I still salt my food, but I use less salt and I use almost no prepackaged food at all.I do look at sodium content now.I also buy reduced fat cheese, too.Pritikin suggests nonfat cheese, though.I would feel deprived if I followed all of the diet ideas perfectly. Instead, I look at my healthy vegetarian diet through new eyes and see where I can make it healthier, but still satisfying and delicious. My husband appreciated that Pritikin is scientifically based and has so many studies done on it.One caveat--I am not a fan of the recipes.I'd rather not eat than eat awful food!I am very picky, though. And I'm not a fan of fat and sugar substitutes--I say just use less of the real thing!

Review of The Coconut Diet: The Secret Ingredient That Helps You Lose Weight While You Eat Your Favorite Foods (Hardcover)

Cherie Calbom has written the book I have been waiting for.Because of my concern about nutritionally sound weight loss and wholistic health, I wanted to have a book that encompassed each of these areas.
As a biologist who has pursued health and nutrition for most of my life, I've tried many of the popular diet programs throughout the years. Many of them work for a while, yet do not provide long-term health benefits or are damaging to the body over time.
I was introduced to the benefits of coconut oil before I read this book, and they are indeed wide-ranging---coconut oil added to the diet increases health and wellness. However, most of the people I have coached need a clear path to run on.This book provides that pathway by giving clear instructions that can work for anyone, regardless of where they started or what they know. The book has a programmed pathway to effective weight loss, as well as instructions on how to restore the body to the health we were all created to enjoy. Many people I know have reported excellent results after only a short time, not only with weight loss, but also with increased energy and a sense of well-being. For those with atherosclerosis, liver congestion, high cholesterol, or other serious problems, Cherie's Phase II Liver Cleanse can help the body restore health when properly followed.
The book is fun to read, has great recipes, plus guidance for overcoming obstacles to weight loss, including emotional issues. I was especially impressed with the sections on blood sugar imbalances, thyroid problems, and candida, which have been a challenge for me personally as well as many of the people I coach. I highly recommend it.

Product Description
DESCRIPTION: Following the success ofThe Ultimate Smoothie Book, Cherie Calbom offers this diet based on groundbreaking research that proves coconut oil promotes weight loss.
Low-carb diets like Atkins and South Beach are the hottest weight loss programs on the market, but they could work faster and more effectively with the addition of one ingredient: coconut oil. Review of The Cardio-Free Diet (Hardcover)

This book is intended for beginner's in weight training. It is an excellent book for someone who needs to be taught how to put together a beginning weight training program. If you already weight train on a regular basis this book is not going to benefit you.I am going to recommend my husband read and learn from the exercises.

Then you get to the section on diet and calories.I completely disagree with the diet recommended. The book recommends that all women start out with only 1,200 calories in Level 1, and throughout the course of the plan end up eating only 1,500 per day for maintenance. If I ate anywhere from 1,200 - 1,500 calories per day I would be starving and go crazy!I think that calorie level is way too low.In addition, it doesn't take into consideration the individual's size or daily activity level.

For the exercise section/plan I give it 5 stars, but had to reduce it to a 3 due to the diet plan.

Review of Managing PCOS For Dummies (Paperback)

The book has a lot of the reg info on what PCOS is, and spends well over half the book talking about diets and food. It's written by a dietician, and so it's helpful for someone looking for tips on food that you may not find to quite this extent in other books. It offers good tips for eating healthy, and for excersizing.
It does recommend a low GI diet, which is the best diet for PCOS, and talkes exstensively about insulin resistance as well- a great key word for those with PCOS. The book is more like a manual of course, it's a "dummies" series, so it lacks a lot of warmth. It does have some interesting recipes, but like the last review- many of them do contain items you can buy in the US and does seem to be European based.

Review of The Best Life Diet Revised and Updated (Paperback)

If I could have ranked this book 4 1/2 stars, I would have.It contains solid information that would certainly benefit anyone and lead to slow and steady weight loss, but I would take off 1/2 a star since none of this information is groundbreaking or innovative. What I do like about this book, compared to Bob Greene's previously released Total Body Makeover book, is that this program is more doable by someone who has a life outside the gym, which is extremely important, since many Americans go on diets, but very few stay on them.

The program is divided into 3 phases. The first phase is basically designed to ease you into a program of healthier eating habits (focused more on the habits, like snacking, not eating within a few hours before bedtime, etc., rather than on limiting foods) and increased movement.Nothing extreme here - I like this aspect of this phase, as for most people, starting right up with a perfectly clean diet and an hour or more of exercise each day is too much (hence my problem with Greene's Total Body Makeover). The second phase is the real weight-loss phase with increased emphasis on "clean eating" by eliminating 6 empty or problem foods from your diet.Again, I like this approach because it makes it much more doable than cutting out all of your bad habits (I'm assuming that most of us have more than 6 - I certainly do) cold turkey.Increased activity is also an important aspect of phase 2.Finally, phase 3 is the "lifestyle" phase of the diet, which is more a lifetime fitness and eating plan than a diet.Recommended daily eating plans (including a 7-day diet diary of Oprah), and some tasty recipes (with lovely photos) are also included.

Finally, as with all of Bob Greene's books, there is direction for focusing in on your reasons for overeating, being overweight, and eating the wrong foods, i.e., the "emotional eating" aspect of weight problems.I particularly agree with Greene's assertion early in the book that in order to address your weight, you must first address your life.I know from my own experience, that when I find myself eating poorly, or eating in excess, or not exercising consistently, it is because of what is going on in my head, and not what is going on in my body.

Ultimately, I think this book is a great addition to one's health and fitness library. In my opinion, it takes the best of Bob Greene's earlier books and puts them into one, concise and doable program, which will provide weight loss and weight management that lasts and not merely a quick and temporary fix.

Product Description
From the bestselling author of Get With the Program! and Bob Greene's Total Body Makeover comes The Best Life Diet, a lifetime plan for losing weight and keeping it off. Bob Greene helped Oprah achieve her dramatic weight loss, and he can help you too. You'll eat the same delicious food that Oprah enjoys, and, just like Oprah, you'll have Bob to encourage you at every step. Unlike a celebrity, however, you don't need to hire a staff of experts to aid and advise you, because Bob's plan, easily tailored to an array of tastes, lifestyles, and activity levels, acts as your personal trainer and private nutritionist. Just open the book and let Bob help you get started down the path toward your best possible life.
What sets Bob apart from all the other experts who claim to have plans that work is that he admits that weight loss is difficult: seventeen years of watching people struggle to lose weight on a seemingly endless string of trendy crash diets, only to backslide and regain the pounds they've shed, have taught him that dropping pounds is not simply a numbers game. By acknowledging that it is not simple laziness but a complicated web of social rituals, cultural expectations, and habits that drives people to gain weight, Greene is able to attack the problem of weight loss realistically and offer not a short-lived, quick-fix formula, but a long-term program that accounts for the challenges and constraints of the real world.
Divided into three phases, The Best Life Diet gives you the tools you need to change your life. In each phase, you'll be asked to reexamine the decisions you make on a daily basis and gradually alter your habits to achieve lasting results. The book also includes easy-to-follow meal plans that make it simple to meet your daily energy and nutrient requirements, whether you are on the run and breakfast means a quick smoothie or you have time to shop for fresh produce and make something special.
You'll watch the weight disappear as you learn to prepare festive and flavorful dishes like Fire-Roasted Tomato-Shrimp Veracruz, Chicken Sausage Jambalaya, or Flank Steak with Chimichurri Topping and indulge in desserts like Roasted Peaches with Ricotta and Almonds or Apple Rhubarb Walnut Crisp. And for each delicious recipe, there is a detailed nutritional analysis, so you know exactly what you are eating and how it fits into your personal eating plan.
Most important, Bob's plan doesn't end once you've lost the weight. Instead, it gives you the tools you need to make living your best life second nature, because for Greene, a diet is not something you go "on" or "off" but a set of guidelines that will help you claim the life you deserve.
