Review of Jane Brody's Good Food Book: Living the High Carbohydrate Way (Hardcover)

I've been using this cookbook for almost 20 years. Over that period of time the current, latest nutritional advice continues to change and contradict that which came before. But I still love these recipes and I'm still alive and not fat. [Those who don't eat too much and excercise seem to do OK.]
These recipes are tasty and easy to prepare. Jane's Turkey Carcass Soup is the best standard soup stock recipe I have ever found. If you actually enjoy vegetables - and don't need to approach them like medicine or something to force yourself to eat beacause they're "good for you" - then I highly recommend this book.

Product Description
From the nationally bestselling author of Jane Brody's Nutrition Book comes "the ultimate, reabable, understandable, practical, and useful book on how to live sensibly and well . . . a primer on the new nutrition and weight control" (Craig Claiborne). Contains over 350 recipes.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Review of The 10% Solution for a Healthy Life: How to Reduce Fat in Your Diet and Eliminate Virtually All Risk of Heart Disease and Cancer (Paperback)

Standing out from a field of "fad" diet books(The Zone;Sugar Busters;Atkins, etc.) like a pearl in a sea of mud,The 10% Solution is a lucid, intelligently written,well-documented eating plan that really works.(I know--I've been following it for some time now, with fantastic results) Kurzweil is NOT a nutritionist--rather,he's a computer scientist--but he's clearly done his homework, and his writing style and format make it easy for anyone to understand the principles of a healthy diet. Yet he doesn't over-simplify,or insult the reader with emotional pleas and lack of documentation. In a nutshell, the "10% Solution" means that no more than 10% of the calories in your diet should come from fat. Extreme? (After all,the FDA,AHA,and other mainstream entities recommend a diet consisting of 30% of calories from fat) Not at all,as Kurzweil convincingly demonstrates. What's extreme is the eating habits cultivated by "developed" societies like our own ov! er the last century, where undue emphasis is placed on fat. The author compares our typical diet with one from rural Asia, along with respective heart disease and cancer rates. The figures are staggering. Yes--despite what you've heard from the latest fad diet promoters--fat IS the culprit(of course,SOME fat is necessary). A truly low-fat,nutritionally balanced eating program is an enormous factor in attaining good overall health. And,yes, you can(and will,no doubt) lose weight on this regimen--but more importantly, you'll feel better and improve your health immensely. Cutting down to 10% of calories from fat does take some adjustments, but it's not as hard to do as many may think, and Kurzweil makes it easier with a section of recipes. I've read quite a few books on diet and nutrition, and this is clearly the best-written one I've personally seen. Read it and change your life for the better.

Review of 1,001 Low-Fat Vegetarian Recipes, 2nd ed. (Paperback)

I suppose, like the reviewer above said, that this isn't a beginning vegetarians cookbook, in the sense that it does not guide you through what it means to be vegetarian etc, etc, BUT, I'd like to point out that nowhere on the book does it say that is what it is (there are books for that).I also will agree that yes, in SOME of the recipies there are strange ingredients: fat-free half and half, cactus paddles, flavored cooking sprays... but there are over 1,000 recipies!Of course they had to get creative!
I think this cookbook is excellent, if you've been a vegetarian for awhile, and you like to cook, then this book is perfect for spicing up your everyday cuisine. The recipies are easy to follow, and so far (I've cooked a lot of dishes from this book) almost everything has been yummy.I'd like to add that if I can't find something I substitute.I use veggie bullion in place of stocks, and skim milk in place of fat free half and half, and I've never had any problems. The book has widened my scope on mixing vegetarian ingredients, enabling me to scan my pantry and whip up combinations I'd never thought of before. There is so much to chose from that you can keep it simple or get a little fancy!
Highly recommended!

Review of The Coconut Diet: The Secret Ingredient That Helps You Lose Weight While You Eat Your Favorite Foods (Hardcover)

Cherie Calbom has written the book I have been waiting for.Because of my concern about nutritionally sound weight loss and wholistic health, I wanted to have a book that encompassed each of these areas.
As a biologist who has pursued health and nutrition for most of my life, I've tried many of the popular diet programs throughout the years. Many of them work for a while, yet do not provide long-term health benefits or are damaging to the body over time.
I was introduced to the benefits of coconut oil before I read this book, and they are indeed wide-ranging---coconut oil added to the diet increases health and wellness. However, most of the people I have coached need a clear path to run on.This book provides that pathway by giving clear instructions that can work for anyone, regardless of where they started or what they know. The book has a programmed pathway to effective weight loss, as well as instructions on how to restore the body to the health we were all created to enjoy. Many people I know have reported excellent results after only a short time, not only with weight loss, but also with increased energy and a sense of well-being. For those with atherosclerosis, liver congestion, high cholesterol, or other serious problems, Cherie's Phase II Liver Cleanse can help the body restore health when properly followed.
The book is fun to read, has great recipes, plus guidance for overcoming obstacles to weight loss, including emotional issues. I was especially impressed with the sections on blood sugar imbalances, thyroid problems, and candida, which have been a challenge for me personally as well as many of the people I coach. I highly recommend it.

Review of The Yeast Syndrome: How to Help Your Doctor Identify & Treat the Real Cause of Your Yeast-Related Illness (Mass Market Paperback)

I am a health professional and in 1995 at the age of 39 I found myself on 9 prescription medications and my health was quickly failing. I had a severe sleep disorder, tender spots, terrible arthralgia, reflux disease, colitis, neuropathy, dizziness, and fibromyalgia syndrome. My sister-in-law suggested that I had yeast syndrome. Of course being a by the book RN I blew her off. One day in a book store I happened to spot this book and leafed through it. I started crying right there because my doctors couldn't help me anymore but here was my help. This book saved my life. When I went to the health food store for help with the herbals the owner found it hard to believe that I could still work and raise a family in my condition. My husband, co-workers and doctor couldn't believe the difference in just a few weeks of starting the program. My doctor asked me what happened and recommended the book to other patients. It was not a fast process but I am fully recovered and sleep like a baby when the kids let me. I no longer feel like my body is 50 years older than I am.I have told countless people about this book and am very grateful it is being reprinted as I loaned mine out and it was never returned. This book is much more detailed than The Yeast Connection and was much more helpful to me. Thank you Dr. Trowbridge for saving my life.

Review of American Heart Association Low-Salt Cookbook, Second Edition: A Complete Guide to Reducing Sodium and Fat in Your Diet (Paperback)

This is a low-fat cookbook with the words "low-fat" crossed out and "low-salt" written in in crayon.I need a low-sodium diet because of inner ear problems and I was very disappointed with this book. Consider, for example, these two recipes: "Chicken Enchiladas,"p.112 and "Spinach Lasagna," p 142.The former has 684 mg sodiumper 2-enchilada serving and the latter has 594 mg per serving.Sorry, folks, but this ain't "low-salt."The book does have manylow-salt recipes, but the real focus is low-fat.The authors useconsiderably more space discussing low-fat issues than low-sodium issuesand precious little of the latter.Since you're not going to eatenchiladas and lasagna every night (I hope not!), the average amount ofsodium intake over, say, a week would be lower using these recipes.Thisis fine if your focus is to take good care of your heart, but if you'relike me and you're sensitive to bursts of sodium into your system, thisbook doesn't cut it.

Review of Low-Carb Cocktails: All the Fun and Taste without the Carbs (Paperback)

My Mom has diabetes and although her doctors told her she could have a "glass of wine", now and then, she wasn't sure about all the other fun drinks out there. Now she is - Marlene and Chuck Koch not only do a great job of explaining the in's and out's of carbs and alcohol - but also have created a huge assortment of wonderful concoctions my Mom (and of course I) can enjoy - guilt-free! With both carbs and calories listed, there are so many to enjoy. I immediately made some of the Mock Kahlua over the weekend and was amazed. With only 2 grams of carb (and no sugar), instead of the usual 14 grams per ounce, it tastes even better than the real stuff. Sipping on a White Russian (only 3 grams of carb) was all it took to convince us both what a fun and great book this is. Last, if you know anyone cutting carbs, sugar (or even calories) this would make a terrific little gift!
