Review of Nourishing Wisdom: A Mind-Body Approach to Nutrition and Well-Being (Paperback)

One of the traps which many of us fall into when we become aware of the relationship between nutrition and health is that we establish a set of dietary rules according to which we label foods as either "good"or "bad."Once a certain food has been assigned to the"bad" category, we might even become critical of ourselves andothers for desiring or eating that food. The more zealous we are in ourconviction that we have found the one right way of eating, the more limitedwe become in our understanding of food and our interaction with it.
Thistitle sets out to dispel the myth that there could ever be a standarddietary system guaranteed to meet everyone's nutritional requirements.Theauthor, a nutritional psychologist, approaches his mission from a trulyholistic perspective.Rather than proposing yet another ideal diet basedon the perfect composition of specific nutrients, he explores themultidimensional dynamics of nourishment, reaching far beyond the purelyscientific and chemical aspects of nutrition.
Although he does not denythe impact of eating high-quality foods, Mr. David invites the reader toconsider other factors which are equally significant in determining whethera meal is truly nourishing: The less tangible "ingredients" of ameal, such as the consciousness with which it is eaten, as well as theambiance of our surroundings, and the people in whose company we dine, areall part of the nourishing experience and profoundly affect the body andmind on both the physical and subtle energetic levels.
"NourishingWisdom" suggests that choosing the "right" foods is lessimportant than eating whatever one chooses wholeheartedly and withawareness. To be fully nourished by food, we must experience it throughboth the action of chewing and the sensation of taste. Our nutritionalrequirements are continuously changing with variables such as age, theenvironment we live in, and nature's seasons. One of the exercisesdescribed in the book is listening for body feedback, which allows thebody's intuitive wisdom to determine which foods would be most nourishingat a given time.
Each chapter in this highly readable book features asummary of the main points discussed, as well as suggestions for how thereader could work with these in his or her own life.Someone who has aweight problem, for instance, will find the chapters addressing theconnection between food and love, and the application of affirmativewillpower, most helpful. And nearly everyone will benefit from therevelation that the digestion and assimilation of foods are affected by thebody posture which we assume during a meal--finally a valid reason whyone should not slouch at the dinner table!

Product Description
"Marc David eloquently describes the importance of addressing the emotional and spiritual aspects of our lives in order to truly nourish ourselves." --Dean Ornish, M.D. Combining the principles of nutritional awareness, personal growth, and body psychology, Nourishing Wisdom provides practical methods for redefining the role food plays in our lives. Review of The Power of the Bite: Impressive Weight Loss, One Bite at a Time (Paperback)

Dr. Nierenberg's book is short, sweet and very effective. Losing weight has been a real struggle.I found myself eating "by the clock" whether I was hungry or not.

The most useful parts of Dr. Nierenberg's book, for me, were "Hunger is your friend" and "Eating more to eat less."The idea of eating "by the clock" is ingrained in me, but based on the book's "keys," I now make every effort to eat only when I actually feel hungry. And I find that smaller portions satisfy me, too. When I go out to eat, I order from the kid's menu when I can, or my husband and I share meals or I just take it home without feeling I have to finish in the restaurant.Per the book's recommendations, I keep up my exercise routine and I've lost weight! The book's straightforward, clear style makes it easy to understand and easier to implement.

Product Description
Did you know that by cutting out just 120 calories a day you will lose approximately twenty-five pounds in less than two years? The Power of the Bite: Impressive Weight Loss, One Bite at a Time, provides a simple, guilt-free way for you to easily lose unwanted pounds.

  • Exercising can be easy

Review of The McDougall Program for a Healthy Heart: A Life-Saving Approach to Preventing and Treating Heart Disease (Paperback)

What's the number one killer in America? AIDS? Diabetes? Cancer? America's big killer is heart disease. In the United States, over 1.25 million heart attacks occur each year. To make matters worse many of those who suffer such attacks die before they reach a hospital. According to McDougall, "The cause of the most common form of heart disease is blockage of the arteries that supply the heart muscle. The blockages, results of the condition known as atherosclerosis, are caused by plaques forming along the internal walls of the arteries. Eating rich foods loaded with cholesterol and fats leads to the formation of these plaques. Heredity is also a factor, but should not be over emphasized because at least half the American population is susceptible. Besides, you can do nothing about changing your heredity."
But there is a lot you can change--and McDougall shows you what and how.
He answers all your questions, and most importantly, he backs up his statements with a stack of references to the medical literature. And unlike angioplasty and bypass surgery which are temporary, short-term relief measures (at best), McDougall provides long-terms solutions that remove the cause allowing your body to reverse blockages, and for those without blockages--how to prevent them. His primary emphasis is on a zero cholesterol, very low fat, plant based diet.
The book is fairly complete, includes answers to all your frequently asked questions, includes an abundance of tasty recipes, and explains many things your doctor hasn't told you (in most cases because he does not know). As a former professor in Internal Medicine at Univ. Hawaii Medical School Dr. McDougall does.
If Americans followed the advice in this book there would be little or no heart disease in this country. Best of all if you follow McDougall's advice and follow his dietary advice you will find that the "drugs that were intended to reduce chest pain should be decreased gradually in dosage and then discontinued entirely as soon as possible." This of course should ONLY be done under the supervision of a doctor.
I would buy three copies of this book. One for yourself, one for your loved one, and one for your doctor.
What your doctor does not know may kill you--and many cardiologists sadly are ignorant of the information provided in this book--though thanks in part to the efforts of doctors like McDougall, Ornish, Fuhrman ..., and others, many of them are learning.

Review of Fat-Proof Your Family: God's Way to Forming Healthy Habits for Life (Paperback)

Don't you hate it when doctors get too cerebral when writing about their specialties? I'm not sure if they're trying to impress their readers with a lot of big words, or if they honestly believe that they hold us spellbound with their foreign dialect that neither informs nor excites. Usually, I'm left with a feeling of inadequacy, unable to understand what must be obvious to a child.

Thank god for Dr. Eaker! He clearly has a heart for helping people regain their vitality and quality of life. Best of all, the information is accessible and easily applied to everyday behavior.

If you are looking for a book on how to lose weight, get more energy, and just plain feel better, then this is the book for you. Dr. Ron Eaker's "Fat-Proof Your Family" is a joy to read and will reshape your view of food (not to mention your figure).

Stop the yo-yo dieting and buy this book!

Review of Incredible Edible Gluten-Free Food for Kids: 150 Family-Tested Recipes (Paperback)

When I found out my 3 year old twins were gluten intolerant, I had no idea what to do or where to start. This book offered a wealth of information not only about recipes, but information on the disease as well as excellent resources.Sheri's recipes offered me time saving, excellent recipes to offer my kids.It was nice to have recipes that were already family tested.I was busy enough chasing my twins and entertaining my 6 year old daughter at the time. Not only did my 6 year old prefer the gluten free breads listed in this book over regular store bought bread, but I have had company (not gluten intolerant) tell me the bread was excellent and asked for more!Just last week my sister was here from out of town and I had to ask her to save it for my boys!I specifically like the rice tapioca bread, breakfast muffins, and the chicken with dijon sauce.Another thing I am thankful for is the recipe for gluten free play dough. My kids were able to go to preschool and play with play dough! I didn't have to worry about them getting ill from the other play dough the school provided. Most importantly, they didn't feel left out by not being allowed to play with the schools play dough. I would highly recommend this book to any family, even adult gluten intolerant individuals who want to save time, money, and heartache.

Product Description
Serving foods that are appetising is no easy task for the parent of a child on a gluten-free diet due to condition such as celiac disease. Forbidden foods -- wheat, rye, oats, and barley -- pervade most recipes and food labels are not always clearly marked. This cookbook, however, can save families time, money, and anguish by providing clear guidelines for selecting ingredients and preparing food safely. But best of all, this is the first cookbook to provide delectable gluten-free recipes formulated especially for children. The rest of the family will want to try them, too. In addition to food recipes, there are tips for cooking substitution, entertaining, a list of resources, as well as a detailed trouble-shooting chart for the gluten-free baker. Sanderson also offers advice on how to deal with situations outside the home that may compromise a child's diet, such as peer-pressure and day care.

Review of Nutrition Almanac (Paperback)

When I ordered this book, I was anticipating giving away my old 4th edition for a new one with improved information.NOT SO!

The tables, the heart and soul of the book, have fewer foods and not more than the 4th edition. In a display of ignorant cost cutting, Carb counts for grains such as rice are given per cup of RAW not cooked product - same for macaroni whereas the 4th edition gives raw and cooked values. This alone makes it not worth the money but scattered throughout are foods that were there for 4th edition but are now gone.

The publisher probably saved money by eliminating pages but I can no longer recommend this book to friends; I advise them to not buy it but get a copy of the 4th edition instead.

Review of The Wine Lover's Healthy Weight Loss Plan (Paperback)

In my business, I receive a lot of requests for endorsements, but accept only those I deem the best. And I jumped on this request immediately. It could not be more appropriate for my audience.

I agree with the reviewer from Seattle who described this as a great reference book - both for its informed health information and its storehouse of healthy gourmet recipes (no those are NOT compatible).

Not just for wine lovers? No, this is a great source book for those wondering whether wine can be beneficial to their health. The answer is yes it is beneficial, if consumed daily and in moderation. And that's good news for all of us.

Review of Peak Performance: Training and Nutritional Strategies for Sport (Paperback)

There are so many good points about this book I hardly know where to start. What impresses me most is that the authors have maintained a balanced and rational view on the many diverse and sometimes conflictinginputs - lab. tests, experience in the sport, folklore, practicalities -all of these impinge on the attitudes of athlete and coach, and can resultin a lot of confusion and uncertainty. The book does an excellent job inunravelling these tangled strands of knowledge and half-knowledge topresent the a clear and accurate picture to the reader. Uncertain pointsare made clearer, several myths are debunked (some of my own misconceptionswere cleared up). Yet where the truth remains hidden or is unclear this iscommented upon. Concerning scientific studies the source material isextensive and up to date.
The layout and language are so clear andreader-friendly, and the material so interesting that I found it hard toput the book down. However, I'd have to advise readers not to try to takein too much at a time.
The few inaccuracies in some of the detailsdidn't detract from the message or the overall quality. There is oneslightly surprising omission, namely the absence of any discussion of theConconi test for aerobic performance. Nevertheless, the sections ontraining are excellent; the ones on nutrition are even better.

Product Description
This is a text for coaches and athletes who want to improve their sporting performance via the application of scientific training and nutritional principles. It gives detailed, practical information on the principles of physical conditioning, and how these relate to explosive events (such as sprinting), endurance events (such as the Ironman triathlon) and team sports (such as rugby and soccer). A chapter on competition preparation has been included ("Getting it right on the day"), as well as an appraisal of scientific aids for athletes (heart rate monitors, altitude training, warm up and warm down, drafting and pacing, and hill training). The book includes contributions from leading coaches, who reveal the secrets to success in their events, and also look at what the future holds for athletes in the year 2008.

Review of It Must Be My Metabolism (Paperback)

I found this book incredibly helpful for I finally understand why the fad diets just don't work. This book is not just another diet book nor is it a weight loss book; so don't expect to find weight loss tricks here and there. I have used this book as part of the program offered at the Doctor's center in Connecticut. For the first time in my life I am losing weight while I am eating plenty of healthy foods. I feel satisfied, calm, and much happier, plus I am exercising and enjoying it too! I feel great and have more energy than ever. The best part is that my health has dramatically improved. Finally, I am learning that it is not about dieting as much as it is about my lifestyle that needs to change to maintain good health.

I personally found the discussion of how stress and fad dieting can cause weight gain very insightful. The book also has excellent and easy to read chapters on metabolic syndrome, a pre-diabetes state that causes heart disease and full blown diabetes if not reversed. The recipes, meal plan and the six-month clinical program in part II of the book are the same as the plan I have followed at Dr. Yavari's center. I recommend this great book to anyone who is tired of fad diets and is interested in living a healthy lifestyle while preventing diabetes

Review of Bursting With Energy: The Breakthrough Method to Renew Youthful Energy and Restore Health (Paperback)

This book takes scientific basics of nutrition and physiology and transcribe them into everyday language. The explanations for why things are the way they are with losing weight are very helpful and provide a moderate level of knowledge, but enough to allow the reader to make informed personal decisions.I especially liked the position the author took of making small changes while building to a bigger goal.We all know of failure from trying to "bite off more than we could chew." Great book!Wonderful lessons!

Product Description
In this updated revision of his acclaimed book, "Bursting with Energy" Dr. Frank Shallenberger makes a clear connection between the amount of energy you have and the amount of aging you do, pointing out that, in medical terms, aging refers to a loss of function, not chronology. A thirty-year old with no loss of function is identical to a twenty-year-old, he says. And the same is true for fully functional people in their sixties-they are the same as thirty-year-olds. According to Shallenberger, the loss of functions that result from aging are themselves the result of energy loss: more energy, less aging; less energy, more aging. When Dr. Shallenberger discusses anti-aging methods, he is actually taling about improving energy production. His work with patients over the years has proven that an energy deficit is the root cause of every disease and sympton, from cancer, to fatigue, to obesity. Dr. Shallenberger believes that knowledge is power. Energy is the key, he says. As you learn to eliminate the bad habits that can seriously impair the production of energy and come o embrace the proven benefits outline in this book, you will discover firsthand the power of having maximum energy. Although you do grow older chronologically, you don't have to keep pace biologically. "Bursting with Energy" is all about feeling younger as you get older.

Review of Sugar Blues (Mass Market Paperback)

For weeks I walked to and from work, over one hour each way, to help drop through a weight plateau of 199 pounds. No matter what I did, including dieting, I was destined to be a 199-pounder for life! Then, one Sundayevening, I read the first few chapters of a book a friend lent me,"Sugar Blues" by Dufty. My first reaction to the informationcontained in it was entirely emotional: anger and disgust.Until thatmoment I had never given sugar a moment's worth of thought. That Sundayevening, I felt my anger so intensely, that I promised myself that Iimmediately would stop my ingestion of sugar for MORAL reasons. As I readfurther, I wished that I had known this information years ago.I wishedthat I had used this information while raising my children.I am saddenedthat I didn't get to the profound wisdom in this book sooner than I did. But, life is full of important lessons. This book is but lesson numberone. And learning this lesson later is better than not learning it at all. While reading "SUGAR BLUES" I was also reading another book onthe topic of meats.I decided to give up sugar and meats. That Sundayevening, I switched to a SWEETENER-FREE and meat-free lifestyle.OnThursday of that week I spent time between the fetal position in bed andsprinting to the washroom.I thought I had the flu, but looking back,Inow realize I had what I'd describe as, "withdrawl" symptoms.24hours later I was feeling better.7 days later, when I weighed myself, Ireceived the first of many self-fulfiling rewards: I cracked my weight-lossplateau, was finally down to 190 pounds.Three weeks later, I lost another6 pounds and was down to 184.Seven weeks later I was at 177.10 weekslater 174.I have had to tighten my belt 5 notches! I fit into pants thatI had not fit into since 1978.As of this last week, I stabilized at aweight plateau of 174 pounds.I have lost a cool 25 pounds. This bookmade me THINK about the quality of, and effect from, the "foods"I shovelled into my mouth. This book motivated me to read the labelsbefore I bought. It is an absolute MUST HAVE for your home library...aMUST SHOW to friends who you care about...a book that you MUST DOG-EAR andunderline, (use over and over again). It might be a good idea for you tothink about buying several or more copies of this book in paper backversion, (low cost), to either give away or circualte among your friendsand relatives. If you do, you just might enhance your life and theirs. Excellent read. Finally, a book that, in user friendly terms, allowed me to break the no pain, no gain, workout ethic instilled in me as a young boy playing competetive sports. Thank you Mark Allen. Brant Secunda's simple exercises for relieving stress and reconnecting with our surroundings have been greatly appreciated and easily shared with my patients. Read this book, and more importantly, read this book with your kids.

Product Description

From setting appropriate goals for each type of fitness to learning how to feed both body and soul, this ground-breaking guide goes beyond the typical health mantras-eat right, exercise regularly, reduce stress-and explores the emotional and physical obstacles to corporeal and spiritual fitness. Based on the immensely successful training of a six-time Ironman triathlete by a renowned Huichol Indian healer, this handbook seeks to remedy the conspicuous absence of spirituality in typical Western exercise regimens by explaining how to incorporate the divine into everyday exercises and why the two issues are inexorably linked. After years of respective training, both parties realized that the art of prayer and its signature mindfulness could increase not only one's physical abilities but also the mind, and that fitness wasn't just a matter of good cardiovascular health and strong muscles. Whether training for intense competition or just reaching fitness goals, this indispensable resource discusses how to exceed mental limitations and become successful in any physical, emotional, or spiritual journey.
