Review of Sugar Blues (Mass Market Paperback)

For weeks I walked to and from work, over one hour each way, to help drop through a weight plateau of 199 pounds. No matter what I did, including dieting, I was destined to be a 199-pounder for life! Then, one Sundayevening, I read the first few chapters of a book a friend lent me,"Sugar Blues" by Dufty. My first reaction to the informationcontained in it was entirely emotional: anger and disgust.Until thatmoment I had never given sugar a moment's worth of thought. That Sundayevening, I felt my anger so intensely, that I promised myself that Iimmediately would stop my ingestion of sugar for MORAL reasons. As I readfurther, I wished that I had known this information years ago.I wishedthat I had used this information while raising my children.I am saddenedthat I didn't get to the profound wisdom in this book sooner than I did. But, life is full of important lessons. This book is but lesson numberone. And learning this lesson later is better than not learning it at all. While reading "SUGAR BLUES" I was also reading another book onthe topic of meats.I decided to give up sugar and meats. That Sundayevening, I switched to a SWEETENER-FREE and meat-free lifestyle.OnThursday of that week I spent time between the fetal position in bed andsprinting to the washroom.I thought I had the flu, but looking back,Inow realize I had what I'd describe as, "withdrawl" symptoms.24hours later I was feeling better.7 days later, when I weighed myself, Ireceived the first of many self-fulfiling rewards: I cracked my weight-lossplateau, was finally down to 190 pounds.Three weeks later, I lost another6 pounds and was down to 184.Seven weeks later I was at 177.10 weekslater 174.I have had to tighten my belt 5 notches! I fit into pants thatI had not fit into since 1978.As of this last week, I stabilized at aweight plateau of 174 pounds.I have lost a cool 25 pounds. This bookmade me THINK about the quality of, and effect from, the "foods"I shovelled into my mouth. This book motivated me to read the labelsbefore I bought. It is an absolute MUST HAVE for your home library...aMUST SHOW to friends who you care about...a book that you MUST DOG-EAR andunderline, (use over and over again). It might be a good idea for you tothink about buying several or more copies of this book in paper backversion, (low cost), to either give away or circualte among your friendsand relatives. If you do, you just might enhance your life and theirs. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts about "SUGARBLUES".By sharing my experience I am hoping that your life willbecome healthier. All the best in your decision to buy "SugarBlues".

Review of Overcoming Overeating: How to Break the Diet/Binge Cycle and Live a Healthier, More Satisfying Life (Mass Market Paperback)

The philosophy presented in this book is counter to nearly all conventional western views regarding dieting and exercise as the best means to achieving acceptable health levels.A very large percentage of the population constantly diets, and yet we are becoming more and more obese as a society; thus the view of the authors is that dieting is not working and is not a logical long term solution. The authors stress the importance of looking beyond dieting (in fact giving up dieting altogether - the logic being diets are causing more obesity than healthy lives in the long run based on concurrently rising diets and obesity levels) and assessing the real influences that cause people to overeat.

The authors point out that people generally eat for two reasons; physiological (the physical body telling us we are hungry), and psychological (eating for enjoyment despite not being physically hungry).Anyone who has been unable to resist that piece of cake or bag of chips even after a fulfilling meal will be able to relate immediately.Demand feeding, the art of feeding your body only on a physiological level, is presented as the only viable and lasting strategy for a healthy relationship with food.Demand feeding also encompasses the notion that separating the two modes of eating forces one to confront the real issues that cause psychological eating, permitting one to address those issues first.

The message put forth really hit home for me in its description of how bad habits generally are developed. When we are babies, we cry for food only when we are truly hungry at a physical level. These are instincts we are born with.Often times well meaning parents stuff their child's face with food to deal with other problems that cause the baby to be upset, and thus bad habits begin (using food to deal with other problems). This may temporarily cause a child to stop crying; however, the long term effect is that child is learning that food can solve other issues.Demand feeding (eating) encompasses the instincts we have as a baby; eating only when our bodies truly are telling us to eat. These same instincts, if properly applied as an adult, will permit us to let our physical bodies dictate the quantity of foods (and to a lesser degree, quality of foods) that are needed to operate and remain healthy, while at the same time not constantly leaving us open to physiological influences that cause overeating.

While I do not feel I am equipped to divulge the true essence of the theory presented in this material (why I recommend reading the book), it is important to note that the authors address many of the glaring concerns that arise from considering such a mindset, such as anxiety about overeating when diets are removed. These apprehensions are addressed on a continual basis as the book includes several real world examples and multiple Q&A chapters making it easy for one to quickly zone in on their personal and specific concerns.

I cannot comment on the long term effects as of yet; however I have certainly noticed some very positive short terms effects that have permitted me to discover issues unrelated to food that were causing me to overeat.I would recommend this book to anyone who has issues with eating too much food and is looking for a logical assessment of how to deal with it as opposed to mere changes in eating habits. There are some people with a genetic makeup that permit healthy bodies under near any eating style (lucky them) as well as and others whose obesity issues go well beyond just eating habits; but for the majority of those that fall somewhere in the middle, this book will apply and will be immensely valuable.

***Full Disclosure - as a male reading a book intended for females (something that only occurred to me after being 90% through the book - haha on me), I can assure that the insight brought forth in this book is equally applicable for males. The authors seem to be known for working with women; however, overeating is clearly gender neutral, and I assure you the content of the book is as well.

Review of The Mars and Venus Diet and Exercise Solution: Create the Brain Chemistry of Health, Happiness, and Lasting Romance (Hardcover)

I read the book, thought "why not try one more that will fail," and tried it. The first week I just did the cleansing drink and morning shake and my lifetime of depression was "gone" and my energy was great! This was enough motivation to start the diet.I have lost 20 lbs in 40 days, I am not hungry or feeling deprived, and not working out to exhaustion. The last time I was able to lose weight was 6 years ago through starving and working out 3 hours a day--I knew at 54, I was NOT going to do that again. But, I have a lot of questions (which as he assures you in his book he is available to answer) that aren't being answered (could be a new book, John!).Also, a cookbook of recipes with the right amounts of carbs, proteins, and healthy fats would be GREAT!Ingredient amounts for Venus and alt. amounts for Mars for dishes : )This book has FINALLLLY given me answers!Thank you!

Review of Barbara Kraus' Calories and Carbohydrates: (16th Edition) (Paperback)

I bought the second edition in 1973, before the labels that are now on all packaged foods and have used it for 30 years. I've had the book longer than I've had my husband (and it's been worth a lot more as well! LOL!). Yes, you can get the information from the packaging on most things, but since oranges and pork chops don't come with labeling, the information is still valuable to those of us who cook from scratch and don't eat everything out of a box. I recommend this as a handy tool to anyone who is interested in counting calories in their quest to maintain their healthy weight.

Product Description

Review of American Heart Association 6 Weeks to Get Out the Fat: An Easy-to-Follow Program for Trimming the Fat from Your Diet (Mass Market Paperback)

As someone who's followed a low-fat diet for almost 10 years, I'm always looking for new ideas. This book isn't it. However, I remember the struggles we went through when we were just starting out with low-fat eating, and I wish I'd had this book then. I especially liked the fact that it encouraged readers to work toward better eating habits slowly. The concept of adding a couple new habits each week for six weeks looks like a real winner to me. That said, I did get a couple good tips from the book, and I've just loaned my copy to a friend who's pre-diabetic. For someone who'd like to eat better and make the process as painless as possible, this is a good place to start.

Product Description
A pocket-size guide presenting a six-week program for eliminating excess fat from the diet shows how to assess the amount of fat consumed, record typical meals, and gradually substitute more healthful foods, with tips on reducing fat while baking and cooking. Original. 75,000 first printing.
