Review of 100 Best Weight-Loss Tips (Hardcover)

Diet, nutrition, and exercise expert Fred Stutman, M.D. presents 100 Best Weight-Loss Tips, a compendium that distills vital information to bite-sized bits for anyone striving to reach and maintain a healthy weight. From warning against common myths such as "Running and strenuous aerobic exercies are the best way to lose weight" (in fact, walking andmoderate exercises burn fat during the first two-thirds of the workout, while strenuous exercises burn carbohydrates during the first two-thrids of the workout and fat during the last one-third), to the severe health dangers of low-carb diets, to why one should weigh oneself weekly instead of daily (there is often a "plateu" period where weight gain levels off - and it's unwise to trigger either the urge to celebrate with daily decreases, or the depressive tendency to give up if one's weight doesn't immediately decrease). A highly recommended, practical, straight-facts health guide for all Americans.

Product Description
100 Best Weight-Loss Tips provides a dynamic course of action for those interested in losing weight quickly and safely. This book translates the science behind diet and nutrition and presents suggestions for a healthy lifestyle in language which is easy to understand.Dr. Stutman also illustrates how low-carbohydrate diets are extremely dangerous to your health and invariably lead to rebound weight gain once stopped.

Review of Fit Soul, Fit Body: 9 Keys to a Healthier, Happier You (Hardcover)

Excellent read. Finally, a book that, in user friendly terms, allowed me to break the no pain, no gain, workout ethic instilled in me as a young boy playing competetive sports. Thank you Mark Allen. Brant Secunda's simple exercises for relieving stress and reconnecting with our surroundings have been greatly appreciated and easily shared with my patients. Read this book, and more importantly, read this book with your kids.

Product Description

From setting appropriate goals for each type of fitness to learning how to feed both body and soul, this ground-breaking guide goes beyond the typical health mantras-eat right, exercise regularly, reduce stress-and explores the emotional and physical obstacles to corporeal and spiritual fitness. Based on the immensely successful training of a six-time Ironman triathlete by a renowned Huichol Indian healer, this handbook seeks to remedy the conspicuous absence of spirituality in typical Western exercise regimens by explaining how to incorporate the divine into everyday exercises and why the two issues are inexorably linked. After years of respective training, both parties realized that the art of prayer and its signature mindfulness could increase not only one's physical abilities but also the mind, and that fitness wasn't just a matter of good cardiovascular health and strong muscles. Whether training for intense competition or just reaching fitness goals, this indispensable resource discusses how to exceed mental limitations and become successful in any physical, emotional, or spiritual journey.

Review of From Fat to Fit: Turn Yourself into a Weapon of Mass Reduction (Paperback)

I actually met Carole Carson and THEN read her book.Believe me, seeing the "after" first had a great impact on me.I never could have imagined the "before" Carole. She went from a pleasantly round grandmotherly type to a toned, energetic, athletic and strikingly attractive woman who looks like she could take on the world! Oh, did I mention that I met her on a tennis court in the Hawaiian Islands? My group was so impressed with her play, confidence and effervesence. Imagine my surprise when I read her book. After only a few chapters, I decided, "I want that!"Her ideas are easy to implement and I love hearing, "Are you thinner--you look great!"Better yet, I have new-found energy and confidence. Her story can be your story. You'll laugh out loud as you read how an entire town jumps on board as Carole motivates them to healthy living.

Product Description
This guide chronicles how one woman's very public journey to lose weight mushroomed into a community quest to get fit. At the age of 60, Carole Carson broke the taboo of speaking about obesity whenshe openly admitted her shame and guilt about being fat and out of shape on the front page of the local newspaper. As she recounted her transformation from butterball to butterfly in a weekly newspaper column, she gradually inspired more than 1,000 people in her Northern California community to join her. People who had struggled with weight loss and fitness suddenly found that when they joined with their friends and neighbors they could accomplish together what they could not do by themselves. They learned a completely new way of living anddiscovered that getting fit was fun and in the process lost the equivalent of a school bus! Through the guide's seven-step process, among other practical strategies and resources, readers will find a framework for duplicating the Nevada County Meltdown's successes in their respective communities-their congregation, their office, their friends and family-realizing the power of partnership and revitalizing their ties with each other.

Review of Fit for Eternal Life (Paperback)

Though I love reading and books dearly, few books capture a spirit or goal in my own life as closely as this book does. For years now I have been struggling to achieve an inner and outer balance in my life - balance between mind, body and spirit. In attempting to do so, I have tried various tools, and methods, and strategies. Yet inevitably I find myself off kilter. Now this book seems to be a resource that will help to achieve that balance.

The main reason for that is the person that Dr. Kevin Vost is. He has been a lifelong enthusiast of both academic learning and of physical fitness. He has written and published extensively in the realm of physical fitness and in cognitive and memory mechanics. Dr. Vost does not just write about these topics he also practices them, which makes him an authority not just theoretically but also practically. Dr. Vost has done graduate work and post- graduate work academically and he also has competed in power lifting.

The book flows nicely from topic to topic. It is designed to help you find balance in your life - to be neither a gym rat, nor a book worm, but to have the best of both worlds. It combines wisdom from classical authors down to current competitive athletes. He states: "Intensity and duration of effort, you see, are inversely proportional. How's that? A well-known saying in HIT circles is that 'you can train hard, or you can train long, but you can't do both.' The more demanding the exercise, the shorter the time you're able to sustain it. The harder you work, the sooner you must stop. We all know this from experience. And the kind of exercise that maximizes physical strength is not only intense but also brief." He will teach you to get more results from less time in the gym, and thus have more time for family, friends, leisure and your favorite 'books'.

Each chapter begins with a set of quotes - one spiritual and the other from the classics. Dr. Vost draws from a very wide range of sources to support his arguments, with examples from Pope Pius XII, Aristotle, Seneca, St. Thomas Aquinas, Hesiod, Mike Mentzer and many more. These motivational and inspirational quotes help to draw you into the material. Robert Wolff in his book Bodybuilding 101 states: "There is nothing so constant as change. Meet it. Embrace it. Enjoy it. Learn from it. The one thing you can be absolutely sure of in your life is change. It's the only thing that never changes. The law of nature is that you either grow or you die; there's no in-between. So, what have you chosen so far? Are you growing in every area of your life? Hey, it's not enough to be growing and looking great just because you work out. That's only a small part of your life. What about your emotions, spiritual life, family, friends, career, hobbies? Are they growing as your body does? Become a complete person and not an in-shape and great-looking version of an incomplete person. There's way more to life than just working out. Go with the flow and embrace changes in all areas of your life. The change will do you good." This book will help you to achieve that lasting change and growth. It will help you develop physically, and through that, develop all areas of your life. Or as a different philosopher Montaigne declared:
"To strengthen the mind you must harden the muscles." Vost will give you the tools to work both. He will teach you how to Pump Iron and to Pump Ions!Pumping IonsBodybuilding 101 : Everything You Need to Know to Get the Body You WantMemorize the Faith! Review of The Calcium Key: The Revolutionary Diet Discovery That Will Help You Lose Weight Faster (Hardcover)

There are 24 reviews of "The Calcium Key" diet as I write this review. Sadly not one of them tells you about the diet, because if it did I would not have purchased the book.
"The Calcium Key" is a well researched (though the studies were sponsored by the dairy industry), well written book on how calcium when added to your diet can help you lose weight.
The authors obviously spent a lot of time writing the text which is very easy to understand and clarifys the calcium-weight loss connection.
Putting aside any self serving interests that perhaps the author benefited from the support of the dairy industry and the results were skewed, I decided to trust in the authors expertise and focus on the plan.
Sadly the plan is a labor intensive one that very few people will be willing and able to follow long term. It involves as the author puts it, writing down every thing you eat and using an exchange system.
The author lists calorie levels and how many exchanges you can eat for your level (similar to the old Weight Watcher progam).
For example if you are on 1200 calories (and the author teaches you how to determine your caloric level) you get 3 breads, 2 meats, 3 veggies, 3 fruits, 3 dairy and 3 fats.
3 graham cracker squares would equal 1 bread group. 1 cup milk would be a dairy. Sounds simple enough...but then you get into mixed foods like a butterfinger candy bar and you have 1 bread group, 2 fruit (dont ask) and 2 fats.
In order to keep it all straight you must keep a diary and write it all down.
Now that said, I think the author is on to something when he suggests adding dairy to your diet. The combination of protein and fat is much more satiating than say a slice of cake or a cookie.
But very few people want to micromanage their diets the way this book proposes.
So though it introduces the calcium weight loss connection, the actual diet is not one that many will succeed with. Just try adding calcium rich foods to your diet 3 times per day and don't increase calories.

Product Description
Speed up your metabolism and lose weight with the revolutionary weight-loss program found in The Calcium Key
"Wow-a diet book that is actually based on science! At long last, a book that combines the valid research to support its claims, simple explanations on determining how to put the proven methods into action, and meal plans and recipes to encourage the reader. I literally went and got myself a piece of cheese as I read chapter three and have added low-fat yogurt to my shopping list."
-Alice Domar, Ph.D., author of the bestselling Self-Nurture, Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School, and Director of the Mind/Body Center for Women's Health at Boston IVF
"The Calcium Key is a new direction for weight loss that is healthy, tasty and easy.Getting three servings a day of low-fat milk, cheese, or yogurt instead of some of your current choices will burn fat, reduce calories and change how your body looks."
-George L. Blackburn, M.D., Ph.D., S. Daniel Abraham Associate Professor of Nutrition,
Harvard Medical School; and Chief, Nutrition Metabolism Laboratory, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center
"Zemel paints on an amazingly broad canvas. . . . He shows how calcium operates at every step of the way-and why a high calcium intake is important for everyone throughout life."
-Robert P. Heaney, M.D., John A. Creighton University Professor and Professor of Medicine at Creighton University
Now the truth can be revealed: cheese, yogurt, and milk are all powerful ingredients in the war against fat. Now you can enjoy the low-fat dairy foods you like as part of a sensible weight-loss plan that really works with the help of The Calcium Key.

Review of The Best Life Diet Revised and Updated (Paperback)

If I could have ranked this book 4 1/2 stars, I would have.It contains solid information that would certainly benefit anyone and lead to slow and steady weight loss, but I would take off 1/2 a star since none of this information is groundbreaking or innovative. What I do like about this book, compared to Bob Greene's previously released Total Body Makeover book, is that this program is more doable by someone who has a life outside the gym, which is extremely important, since many Americans go on diets, but very few stay on them.

The program is divided into 3 phases. The first phase is basically designed to ease you into a program of healthier eating habits (focused more on the habits, like snacking, not eating within a few hours before bedtime, etc., rather than on limiting foods) and increased movement.Nothing extreme here - I like this aspect of this phase, as for most people, starting right up with a perfectly clean diet and an hour or more of exercise each day is too much (hence my problem with Greene's Total Body Makeover). The second phase is the real weight-loss phase with increased emphasis on "clean eating" by eliminating 6 empty or problem foods from your diet.Again, I like this approach because it makes it much more doable than cutting out all of your bad habits (I'm assuming that most of us have more than 6 - I certainly do) cold turkey.Increased activity is also an important aspect of phase 2.Finally, phase 3 is the "lifestyle" phase of the diet, which is more a lifetime fitness and eating plan than a diet.Recommended daily eating plans (including a 7-day diet diary of Oprah), and some tasty recipes (with lovely photos) are also included.

Finally, as with all of Bob Greene's books, there is direction for focusing in on your reasons for overeating, being overweight, and eating the wrong foods, i.e., the "emotional eating" aspect of weight problems.I particularly agree with Greene's assertion early in the book that in order to address your weight, you must first address your life.I know from my own experience, that when I find myself eating poorly, or eating in excess, or not exercising consistently, it is because of what is going on in my head, and not what is going on in my body.

Ultimately, I think this book is a great addition to one's health and fitness library. In my opinion, it takes the best of Bob Greene's earlier books and puts them into one, concise and doable program, which will provide weight loss and weight management that lasts and not merely a quick and temporary fix.

Product Description
From the bestselling author of Get With the Program! and Bob Greene's Total Body Makeover comes The Best Life Diet, a lifetime plan for losing weight and keeping it off. Bob Greene helped Oprah achieve her dramatic weight loss, and he can help you too. You'll eat the same delicious food that Oprah enjoys, and, just like Oprah, you'll have Bob to encourage you at every step. Unlike a celebrity, however, you don't need to hire a staff of experts to aid and advise you, because Bob's plan, easily tailored to an array of tastes, lifestyles, and activity levels, acts as your personal trainer and private nutritionist. Just open the book and let Bob help you get started down the path toward your best possible life.
What sets Bob apart from all the other experts who claim to have plans that work is that he admits that weight loss is difficult: seventeen years of watching people struggle to lose weight on a seemingly endless string of trendy crash diets, only to backslide and regain the pounds they've shed, have taught him that dropping pounds is not simply a numbers game. By acknowledging that it is not simple laziness but a complicated web of social rituals, cultural expectations, and habits that drives people to gain weight, Greene is able to attack the problem of weight loss realistically and offer not a short-lived, quick-fix formula, but a long-term program that accounts for the challenges and constraints of the real world.
Divided into three phases, The Best Life Diet gives you the tools you need to change your life. In each phase, you'll be asked to reexamine the decisions you make on a daily basis and gradually alter your habits to achieve lasting results. The book also includes easy-to-follow meal plans that make it simple to meet your daily energy and nutrient requirements, whether you are on the run and breakfast means a quick smoothie or you have time to shop for fresh produce and make something special.
You'll watch the weight disappear as you learn to prepare festive and flavorful dishes like Fire-Roasted Tomato-Shrimp Veracruz, Chicken Sausage Jambalaya, or Flank Steak with Chimichurri Topping and indulge in desserts like Roasted Peaches with Ricotta and Almonds or Apple Rhubarb Walnut Crisp. And for each delicious recipe, there is a detailed nutritional analysis, so you know exactly what you are eating and how it fits into your personal eating plan.
Most important, Bob's plan doesn't end once you've lost the weight. Instead, it gives you the tools you need to make living your best life second nature, because for Greene, a diet is not something you go "on" or "off" but a set of guidelines that will help you claim the life you deserve.

It isn't always easy to prepare menus and cook food ahead of time, but if you can do it, then you're on your way to healthier eating.Dr. Sears explains his "diet" better to non-medical people in this book. LOVE this book.Buy it.You will not be sorry. My friends and coworkers are now reading the book and following the very simple suggestions. It is so easy! Not a drastic restrictive diet at all.Very simple.Highly recommend.
