Review of Hawaii Diet (Hardcover)

I've experimented with Dr. Ornish's plan, Dr. Atkins' plan, and with vegetarianism; I am NOT running Ornish down, but I gotta admit I DO like tuna fish now and again (by the way, the tuna fish I buy is not only dirt-cheap but is actually totally devoid of fat; and even regular canned-in-water tuna is incredibly low in fat).So Ornish's plan is not something I could strictly adhere to.Dr. Atkins' Diet led me gain body fat and weight; I dropped that like a hot brick.Vegetarianism is cool but it got to be a hassle with my family.Then....I chanced upon THIS book (and in fact got this book from my brother for Christmas).
Dr. Shintani is sort of like Dr. Deepak Chopra:He combines the best of Western medicine with the best of the ancient medicine of his own culture (in Chopra's case, that's Ayurvedic medicine; in Shintani's, of course, it's the wisdom and medicines of ancient Hawaii, before we Westerners screwed things up for them). And he explains -- without bashing, or badmouthing, or distorting facts to make them fit what he wants -- how in fact his diet plan can work.
Simply put, we all know that if you don't eat too many calories you either will not gain weight or in fact you'll LOSE weight.Ah, but how do you do that without feeling deprived?Basically by eating whole, unprocessed, natural foods which not only are low in fat and high in nutrients, but are high in satiety value (you'd have to eat a whole heck of a lot of them to get anywhere NEAR 2000 calories, plus a serving of them would fill you up so you feel satisfied and won't feel like eating more anyway). He suggests things like poi, taro, whole grains, non-dairy and non-meat sources of protein and calcium, and very low-fat foods.BUT he allows for various exceptions:For instance, you can use egg whites or skim milk if you like, or eat tuna and other low-fat meats and fish.He includes a Hawaii/Pacific diet, a Hawaii/mainstream American diet, and a Hawaii/Meditteranean diet so that you DO have choices and variations.
I would have given this book 5 stars, but for one little thing:Some of the recipes call for things that quite frankly we don't see too much of here on the East Coast (my produce store, what with its wonderful choices of apples, pears, cabbage, tomatoes, etc., just refuses to stock breadfruit!phooey!).So, you might not find the recipe section extremely useful, although many of the recipes, such as his low-fat oatmeal, are easy to make and really good too.Other than for that one little qualm I've got, it's a great book.At the very least, check it out:You'll learn a lot from this guy.

Review of The Smart Carb Guide to Eating Out (Mass Market Paperback)

In this type of society where men as well as women work, there is not enough time to prepare a healthy meal.
Thanks to Tracy Jones I can eat the right food outside the home.I can work and know that I always can go to a fast food or family restaurant and get the right amount of food without worrying about counting my calories or carbs.
Another important benefit of following the menus she describes in this book is the level of energy that you have after eating. I can go back to work and I have such a high level of energy that you might think that I took a nap.I am now alert all the time and I am not hungry for four hours since I feel satisfied with what I ate. Finally, the snacks in between keeps me going the rest of the day.
I also really enjoy the recipies of the salads that I can prepare at home.
Furthermore, my insulin level is going to be controlled because I am eating a balance diet (40-30-30).I will be a healthy person.
This book explains the diet in a very simple and easy way to follow.
Thank you for making one part of my life easier.

Product Description
A fast-food diet? It may seem like an oxymoron, but for the millions of Americans living a low-carb lifestyle-many of whom still end up eating on the run at fast-food joints and sitting down with their families at chain restaurants-The Smart-Carb Guide to Eating Out shows how to stick to a low-carb diet when eating on the go.

Rather than simply listing the nutritional content and requiring us to do the math ourselves to figure out what to eat, Tracy Jones, M.S., provides a shortcut by listing which menu items (or combination of menu items) compose a smart-carb meal that is compatible with The Zone, South Beach, or any 40-30-30 diet. The book also provides calorie and carb content so that readers can easily customize meals to meet their own nutritional needs. And with the help of the 7-Day Quick Start Program, readers can quickly implement their favorite fast-food meals-like the Classic Single hamburger and Junior Frosty at Wendy's-to jump-start their weight loss.

Review of Your Child's Weight: Helping without Harming (Paperback)

I stumbled on this book while searching for family meal plans. What a revelation. We have one child who we have worried over for years regarding her eating habits and high weight. My husband actually picked up this book and read it cover to cover and, uncharacteristically, led the way in a radical change about how we think about meals and food in our household. This book is full of common sense for families who may be struggling with a child's weight problem. The basic idea is so ZEN--stop controlling, stop struggling, stop worrying and you change the very nature of the problem. Now we're no longer trapped in the double standard of telling one kid to stop eating and the other to finish her food. We're seeing our picky 3 year old actually grab a carrot on his own!!My overeater pushes back from the table when she's full and doesn't crouch over her plate like a famished animal. My middle child is learning to sit in her chair and enjoy the food that is available instead of asking for alternate meals. My husband and I actually have time to catch up with the kids. And I have been able to look at my own eating patterns (and their origins) in a new way. This is a profoundly wise book and I'm so grateful to have discovered it.

Product Description
As much about parenting as feeding, this latest release from renowned childhood feeding expert Ellyn Satter considers the overweight child issue in a new way. Combining scientific research with inspiring anecdotes from her decades of clinical practice, Satter challenges the conventional belief that parents must get overweight children to eat less and exercise more. In the long run, she says, making them go hungry and forcing them to be active makes children preoccupied with food, prone to overeating, turned off to activity, and likely to gain too much weight. Trust is a central theme here: children must be able to trust parents to provide as much food as they need to satisfy their appetites; parents must trust children to eat only as much as they need. Satter provides compelling evidence that, if parents do their jobs with respect to feeding, children are remarkably capable of knowing how much to eat.

Review of Runaway Eating: The 8-Point Plan to Conquer Adult Food and Weight Obsessions (Paperback)

If I didn't know better, I would think that the authors of this book had hidden cameras in my pantry (and in my subconscious). In just the first few pages, they perfectly described my over-eating episodes as if they'd been there with me while I devoured an entire bag of chocolate chips. And in the subsequent chapters they revealed the lies I've been telling myself in the back of my mind, helping me get honest with myself about my distorted view of my body, my eating, and how to find happiness.Although the book is clearly aimed at women in their mid-life (one of the 8 points in the plan is specific to menepause), I found most of the book applicable to me as a 30yo man who has fluctuated between over-eating and restricting my whole life.I feel like, for the first time in my life, a veil has been lifted that has revealed all the ridiculous lies I've been telling myself that keep me unhappy.I'm just starting out, trying to regain my ability to know when I'm really hungry (not tired, angry, bored, or depressed), and when I'm full (rather than eating until I'm sick).I already find I'm eating more than I convinced myself I should eat (though surely less than I was eating, since I'm not gorging on cookies anymore).I also have more energy and find myself able to deal with work and home with a smile, rather than succumbing to tension. If you've ever told yourself that your happiness is dependant on losing a few more pounds, or you've ever started eating a cake by taking a small slice, then rationalized another small slice, then another, and another and another, until the cake is nearly gone -- this book will be a kind, gentle wake-up call and help you take rational steps toward a healthy relationship with food.

Product Description
The first book to address a disturbing new trend: dangerous eating patterns in midlife women that can have serious health consequences.
Struggling to cope with the stress of menopause, empty nest syndrome, caring for ailing parents, work overload, and the cultural emphasis on youth and beauty, more and more women find themselves eating compulsively to ease tension, manage anxiety, quell depression, and distract themselves from what's really eating them. Others obsessively follow strict diets or exercise excessively.
In this groundbreaking book, clinical psychologist Cynthia M. Bulik, Ph.D., and dietitian Nadine Taylor team up to present a patient-tested 8-step program to help women regain a healthy relationship with food. Readers also will find:
o A thorough explanation of the full spectrum of Runaway Eating behaviors, from occasional lapses into binge eating to restrictive dieting to compulsive exercising
o Alternative ways to alleviate anxiety and defuse depression
o Practical strategies for managing the menopausal symptoms that often lead to disordered eating

Review of It Must Be My Metabolism (Paperback)

I found this book incredibly helpful for I finally understand why the fad diets just don't work. This book is not just another diet book nor is it a weight loss book; so don't expect to find weight loss tricks here and there. I have used this book as part of the program offered at the Doctor's center in Connecticut. For the first time in my life I am losing weight while I am eating plenty of healthy foods. I feel satisfied, calm, and much happier, plus I am exercising and enjoying it too! I feel great and have more energy than ever. The best part is that my health has dramatically improved. Finally, I am learning that it is not about dieting as much as it is about my lifestyle that needs to change to maintain good health.

I personally found the discussion of how stress and fad dieting can cause weight gain very insightful. The book also has excellent and easy to read chapters on metabolic syndrome, a pre-diabetes state that causes heart disease and full blown diabetes if not reversed. The recipes, meal plan and the six-month clinical program in part II of the book are the same as the plan I have followed at Dr. Yavari's center. I recommend this great book to anyone who is tired of fad diets and is interested in living a healthy lifestyle while preventing diabetes

Review of Sugar Blues (Mass Market Paperback)

For weeks I walked to and from work, over one hour each way, to help drop through a weight plateau of 199 pounds. No matter what I did, including dieting, I was destined to be a 199-pounder for life! Then, one Sundayevening, I read the first few chapters of a book a friend lent me,"Sugar Blues" by Dufty. My first reaction to the informationcontained in it was entirely emotional: anger and disgust.Until thatmoment I had never given sugar a moment's worth of thought. That Sundayevening, I felt my anger so intensely, that I promised myself that Iimmediately would stop my ingestion of sugar for MORAL reasons. As I readfurther, I wished that I had known this information years ago.I wishedthat I had used this information while raising my children.I am saddenedthat I didn't get to the profound wisdom in this book sooner than I did. But, life is full of important lessons. This book is but lesson numberone. And learning this lesson later is better than not learning it at all. While reading "SUGAR BLUES" I was also reading another book onthe topic of meats.I decided to give up sugar and meats. That Sundayevening, I switched to a SWEETENER-FREE and meat-free lifestyle.OnThursday of that week I spent time between the fetal position in bed andsprinting to the washroom.I thought I had the flu, but looking back,Inow realize I had what I'd describe as, "withdrawl" symptoms.24hours later I was feeling better.7 days later, when I weighed myself, Ireceived the first of many self-fulfiling rewards: I cracked my weight-lossplateau, was finally down to 190 pounds.Three weeks later, I lost another6 pounds and was down to 184.Seven weeks later I was at 177.10 weekslater 174.I have had to tighten my belt 5 notches! I fit into pants thatI had not fit into since 1978.As of this last week, I stabilized at aweight plateau of 174 pounds.I have lost a cool 25 pounds. This bookmade me THINK about the quality of, and effect from, the "foods"I shovelled into my mouth. This book motivated me to read the labelsbefore I bought. It is an absolute MUST HAVE for your home library...aMUST SHOW to friends who you care about...a book that you MUST DOG-EAR andunderline, (use over and over again). It might be a good idea for you tothink about buying several or more copies of this book in paper backversion, (low cost), to either give away or circualte among your friendsand relatives. If you do, you just might enhance your life and theirs. Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts about "SUGARBLUES".By sharing my experience I am hoping that your life willbecome healthier. All the best in your decision to buy "SugarBlues".

Review of Shape Diet (Paperback)

I do not normally read diet books but this was recommended by a friend. It is actually a healthy lifestyle guide with the important distinction of having a system for figuring out your own specific needs. As the author states, "One diet can not possibly fit all".

The questionnaire is detailed and covers body shape, health problems, food cravings, the timing of your hunger and energy slumps, and personality traits. There are drawings as well to help you determine your body type. It took some effort but good things usually do. I tried out the plan for the Enthusiast type and quickly noted I had more dependable energy levels and fewer cravings for sweet or starchy foods. Even if you omit the body typing there is a heap of info on allergies, meal planning, and psychological strategies for achieving your health goals. The author is a TV cook as well as clinical nutritionist so the recipes have a lot of yum factor instead of just earnest intentions. Friends too have found this book helpful in finding out whether they were best suited to high protein or high carb etc. Some of them found the results transformative.

Product Description
This book goes way beyond the 'one diet fits all' philosophy. The Shape Diet utilises the system of four endocrine-based body types: Enthusiast, Driver, Sensualist, and Deliberator. The author has successfully used this method of weight control on clients for twenty years. The plan differs from others of its kind by focusing on differences in gender, body type, and personality. The Shape Diet outlines scientific, psychological, spiritual, and practical strategies to help you lose weight according to your body type.

Review of Genetic Nutritioneering (Paperback)

The focus on this book is to bring the latest research on how to create from a person's genetic template the best health outcomes as they age using personalized nutrition and lifestyle tailoring. The book is science-basedfrom both the clinical research experiences of the author in the FunctionalMedicine Research Center and from the hundreds of scientific studies fromother researchers cited in the extensive bibliography. This is a "howto" book as much as a description of when, why and where medicine willbe changing to become "personalized medicine" in the 21stcentury.

Product Description
The far-ranging Human Genome Project is producing a breathtaking revolution in health, raising the prospect of averting hereditary "destined" diseases by modifying the expression of genetic traits. Researchers have identified many genes implicated in specific diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and arthritis and have realized that unfavorable genetic messages can be improved by changes in lifestyle, diet, and environment. Genetic Nutrioneering uses detailed questionnaires to show how to "read" genetic characteristics and how specific foods and nutrients can be used to improve gene expression to slow biological aging and reduce the risk of age-related diseases. It covers the use of gene expression for preventing heart disease, cancer, arthritis, and hormone-related problems, and improving immune and nervous system function. A comprehensive nutritional program presents specific foods, supplements, and diet plans that apply these concepts to an individual's needs.

Review of Fat and Cholesterol are Good for You (Paperback)

I admit to bias in this book review, having written one of the four Forwards in it. Dr. Ravnskov's earlier book, The Cholesterol Myths, 2000, has become quite famous. When it went out-of-print around 2007 used copies had asking prices of $300. I read it in 2002 and referred to it frequently. As in the new book (FCGY), the complete lack of correlation between serum cholesterol, LDL-C, and HDL-C and chance of atherosclerosis leading to heart attack was shown. Also, in both books, the lack of harm from eating animal fat (saturated) was shown from published trials. Some trials claimed the opposite, the still common myths that you hear frequently, but Ravnskov would look at the data in the medical papers and see whether those data matched the Abstract and Conclusions, finding often a disconnect. He is one of the few who would search the references of a paper to see whether the purpose the paper cited was actually supported by the content of the paper; often it was not. He also showed that reduction of cholesterol or LDL-C by old or new drugs such as the statins (Zocor, Lipitor) was of no benefit whatever, that the side effects of these drugs were more common and severe than claimed, and that their accidental benefits of being anti-inflammatory, like aspirin, were exaggerated by perversion of clinical trials by a level of patient selection far beyond what your physician would ever achieve.

In addition to all this, in FCGY, newer data from the nine recent years is woven into the original narrative. Some of the new data were whimsical, such as the correlation between heart attacks and animal fat, yellow fingers and the local tax rate. Hunh? Well, real studies show animal fat intake to be a benefit, opposite to the common dogma; yellow fingers is correct because it is from smoking tobacco; and the rate of heart attacks in the municipal districts of Stockholm, Sweden vs. the local tax rates has an excellent correlation; but could it be a cause?

A new sidebar revealed the storm of protest in Finland over a campaign by a dairy products producer to show the healthfulness of its products. As Finland is even more consumed by anti-fat campaigns than the USA, the manufacturer finally backed down. Another sidebar and a new chapter near the end explained why high-carb diets (even complex whole grain carbs) are disaster for diabetics. Another sidebar explained the lack of evidence for the term "bad cholesterol" for LDL-C, including a deep literature search that showed nothing in support of the claim. Another showed the uselessness of serum triglycerides (TG) to show good health, the lack of accuracy in the assay being one reason. Another showed the cheating in the huge (and expensive US taxpayers) MRFIT Study on about 360,000 subjects. Another showed the claims of Dr. Dean Ornish (and by implication, Pritikin, McDougall, Esselsteyn, etc.) of great results from a 6-factor lifestyle change were not backed by evidence. Another showed that the members of the committee of the National Cholesterol Education Program, pretending to be a government organization, all had multiple financial ties to the Big Pharma producers of the cholesterol lowering drugs.

New topics were introduced not in the older book. One was an honest attempt to explain what causes arterial lesions, atherosclerosis, then blockages leading to heart attacks, including the amazing finding that vaccination for influenza prevents heart attacks. Ravnskov showed that an arterial plaque that could break open was similar to a boil, and why veins do not become atherosclerotic. A final chapter answers another topic the earlier book did not address: how to avoid premature death from a heart attack.

There is a good index, and hundreds of citations, mostly to medical journals. The writing is easy to read, if "accented". There are no wild claims. The only technical item I question is the term "cholesterol droplets" (p197) and the appearance of crystalline cholesterol, because the melting point of cholesterol is 149°C, far higher than body temperature of 37°C. Most cholesterol is present as esters such as the oleate and palmitate, which melt much lower and are more soluble in any fatty material.

The publisher did no favors in proof reading. Dozens of words are hyphenated as though they were on two lines, and sometimes even the location of the hyphen was odd. Loose was used at least twice when lose was meant.

Because of its exceptional honesty, depth of literature searching, logical correlations and connections, and even some humor, FCGY is strongly recommended. It should become a classic in its own right.

Product Description
Do you know
...what REALLY causes heart disease?
...that heart patients haven't eaten more saturated fat than other people and stroke patients have eaten less?
...that diabetics may be cured if they replace carbohydrates with saturated fat?
...that people with low cholesterol become just as atherosclerotic as people with high?
...that high cholesterol is not a risk factor for women or diabetics?
...that high cholesterol is not a risk factor for old people although by far most heart attacks occur after age 65?
...that old people with high cholesterol live longer than old people with low?
...that the lipoproteins protect us against infectious diseases and probably also against cancer?
The author is a scientist himself and has published more than 80 papers and letters in the scientific press critical to the cholesterol campaign, for which he has won two international awards. In his new book, which includes updated and simplified sections from his previous one (The Cholesterol Myths), Ravnskov also presents his own idea about the cause of heart disease, an idea that explains all the findings that do not fit with the present view.

Review of The OC Diet Revolution: Revealing the Mystery of Weight Loss (Paperback)

This book is excellent. Not only does chazz dispel all the myths of diet fads and old wives tales, he brings weight loss back to the basics. The book explains clearly how losing weight consists of three components: Aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise, and caloric intake.
I use to fall for all those fad diets and never see any results, after reading this book it was as though a light bulb went off. I highly recommend it.

Review of Everything You Need To Know About Fat Loss (Paperback)

If you ever wondered why that low carb diet eventually stopped working or why that 1,000 calorie a day diet does not work for very long, this is the book for you.

Understanding why your body chemistry does what it does is a revelation.

All these diet books just lead you on.Diets do not work long term. You have to eat every 3 hours, eat adequate protein and not too much carbs to lose weight.

Weight lifting is more effective for weight loss than aerobics!

Low carb diets shut down your thyroid long term. Many people stay on these things, get more irritable by the day and do not lose weight.

I enjoyed the scientific explanation of thermogenesis.I won't ever be hoodwinked again.

Feed your body right, lift weights.I hope the word spreads..

The only downside of this book is the author's complete unawareness of the word "affect".He uses the word "effect" throughout the book.It drove me nuts!

He also does not know about you're vs. your.I guess it is not his job to know grammar. The editor of the book should have read it instead of just doing a spellcheck.

Otherwise, a very good book.

Review of Arthritis: Fight it with the Blood Type (D'adamo, Peter. Eat Right 4 Your Type Library.) (Hardcover)

I have been suffering from Fibromyalgia for over 15 years.Once I went on the ER4YT diet, my over-all health improved vastly... except I still suffered occasionally from Fibromyalgia.I bought this book, followed the diet & went on the 12 week arthritis protocol that he recommended. Not only did the pain subside during the 12 weeks, but also for the past year it has been much more manageable. The most difficult thing was finding the supplements in the dosages that Dr. D'Adamo recommended.Through the help of the internet I found all of them - most of them from Vitacost.com.It still amazes me that after a year of going on this protocol I am still doing so well.I am an O non-secretor.

Product Description
From the author of the two million copy Eat Right 4 (for) Your Type series- a library of books to help defeat eightof the most common conditions with the Blood Type Diet.(r)

Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo has forever changed the face of eating right to lose weight and achieve maximum health. Because he discovered what many already instinctively new-that a plan that works for one person may make another ill-there will never be a one-size-fits-all diet again. And since we now know that each blood type is affected differently by common diseases and conditions, there will never be a one-size-fits-all plan of action.

Now Dr. D'Adamo adds two new volumes to hisEat Right for Your Type Health Library. The first two were Cancer and Diabetes. The next books tackle arthritis (including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other conditions caused by inflammation) and cardiovascular disease (such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke).

In these volumes, readers will find new information individualized for their blood type and illness. Self-assessment tests that help determine status and measure progress are included, as well as supplementary, lifestyle, and exercise protocols tailored to each blood type and each condition. There has never been a better arsenal for fighting disease, nor an easier or clearer tool.
