Review of The Smart Carb Guide to Eating Out (Mass Market Paperback)

In this type of society where men as well as women work, there is not enough time to prepare a healthy meal.
Thanks to Tracy Jones I can eat the right food outside the home.I can work and know that I always can go to a fast food or family restaurant and get the right amount of food without worrying about counting my calories or carbs.
Another important benefit of following the menus she describes in this book is the level of energy that you have after eating. I can go back to work and I have such a high level of energy that you might think that I took a nap.I am now alert all the time and I am not hungry for four hours since I feel satisfied with what I ate. Finally, the snacks in between keeps me going the rest of the day.
I also really enjoy the recipies of the salads that I can prepare at home.
Furthermore, my insulin level is going to be controlled because I am eating a balance diet (40-30-30).I will be a healthy person.
This book explains the diet in a very simple and easy way to follow.
Thank you for making one part of my life easier.

Product Description
A fast-food diet? It may seem like an oxymoron, but for the millions of Americans living a low-carb lifestyle-many of whom still end up eating on the run at fast-food joints and sitting down with their families at chain restaurants-The Smart-Carb Guide to Eating Out shows how to stick to a low-carb diet when eating on the go.

Rather than simply listing the nutritional content and requiring us to do the math ourselves to figure out what to eat, Tracy Jones, M.S., provides a shortcut by listing which menu items (or combination of menu items) compose a smart-carb meal that is compatible with The Zone, South Beach, or any 40-30-30 diet. The book also provides calorie and carb content so that readers can easily customize meals to meet their own nutritional needs. And with the help of the 7-Day Quick Start Program, readers can quickly implement their favorite fast-food meals-like the Classic Single hamburger and Junior Frosty at Wendy's-to jump-start their weight loss.

Review of Shape Diet (Paperback)

I do not normally read diet books but this was recommended by a friend. It is actually a healthy lifestyle guide with the important distinction of having a system for figuring out your own specific needs. As the author states, "One diet can not possibly fit all".

The questionnaire is detailed and covers body shape, health problems, food cravings, the timing of your hunger and energy slumps, and personality traits. There are drawings as well to help you determine your body type. It took some effort but good things usually do. I tried out the plan for the Enthusiast type and quickly noted I had more dependable energy levels and fewer cravings for sweet or starchy foods. Even if you omit the body typing there is a heap of info on allergies, meal planning, and psychological strategies for achieving your health goals. The author is a TV cook as well as clinical nutritionist so the recipes have a lot of yum factor instead of just earnest intentions. Friends too have found this book helpful in finding out whether they were best suited to high protein or high carb etc. Some of them found the results transformative.

Product Description
This book goes way beyond the 'one diet fits all' philosophy. The Shape Diet utilises the system of four endocrine-based body types: Enthusiast, Driver, Sensualist, and Deliberator. The author has successfully used this method of weight control on clients for twenty years. The plan differs from others of its kind by focusing on differences in gender, body type, and personality. The Shape Diet outlines scientific, psychological, spiritual, and practical strategies to help you lose weight according to your body type.

Review of Heavy Lettuce: Adventures of a Journeyman Dieter (Paperback)

At 224 pages, I began reading this coincidentally at a time where at 224 pounds, I felt overweight.Heavy Lettuce takes a very unique approach in providing information to the reader on the subject of weight loss.Instead of providing the reader with a boring weight loss routine and a diet that we all know, Flynn discusses the pitfalls of going on any diet: gaining more weight when all is said and done.

The book's title, "Heavy Lettuce" is the perfect title to describe the "heaviness" of doing the right thing: eating right and staying healthy when there's a lightness or carefreeness in justeating one more slice of pizza or just one more twinkie, or "just" 4 more weight watcher diet chocolate ice creams.

The book takes a unique approach for a diet book in that it takes strong analysis of one's "obligation" or habits that lead to splurging on food and ultimately killing one's diet plan.It delves into the habits we develop over the years and helps the dieter understand why a diet that seems to shed pounds eventually fails.

Unlike other weight loss books written by people who probably never had to go on a diet to begin with, Flynn's "expertise" at having, at one point, looked beyond his belly to see his weight at around 265 pounds, gives the reader a sense of realism and a new friend with an author whose words of wisdom give hope to the futility of dieting.

When you read a weight loss book from a person who was at where you, the reader, are currently at, the author's tone comes off as one of true empathy and integrity, even as an encouraging friend trying to brainstorm with you the correct manner in losing weight that is perfect for you.

Flynn delves into his life from when he was a child to when he began dating to explore the complexities of both weight loss and weight gain.It looks at how the "weight issue" affects one in college, the professional life, and looks at people's perception of a person on a diet both prior to losing weight and after losing weight. Then it looks at the contibuting factors to gaining weight: stress, greed, changes in lifestyle, proximity of 7-11 locations, and excuses.

He provides many humorous real life anecdotes that everyone can identify with.

There are many heart felt passages that the reader, who is trying to lose weight, will identify strongly with: for me, his theory on the inflated weighing scales at all doctor's offices made me laugh.

Then there are moments where Flynn looks at the dark side of gaining weight: how depression sets in when one cannot lose weight, how the world treats one when heavier than normal, how obsessed one becomes with food, and in those dark passages, he successfully manages to rescue the reader out of these difficult moments with excellent wit and humor such as his passage on giving his weighing scale a name and how he gives real life attributes to one of the book's major antagonists:the television!

The book provides excellent online resources and tools in the appendix section; and the author goes into specifics of various weight loss programs that allows one to look at the options out there.

Ultimately, the book does not corner you into taking any weight loss program, but provides the dieter with the proper mindset and mental framework to succeed in dieting.

Having lost 16 pounds since I read this book, I'd say Flynn's guidance is the best I've gotten from any weight loss book.

This will not be a weight loss book that will get lost in your pile of books. It will be one that you will refer to often, especially when you find yourself at a crossroads between exercising or eating that extra slice of pizza.Instead of pondering like Hamlet, "to eat or not to eat", get this book and suddenly the perspectives are much clearer: "do what is the best for your health."

Great read.A permanent one in my collection of reference guides.

Product Description
This informative and humorous book blends solid diet advice along with the lighter side of dieting. It is full of weight-loss information, pertinent examples and true stories from Johnny T. Flynn's life, while at the same time recognizing the importance of keeping your sense of humor. Johnny analyzes the common pitfalls, the psychological struggles, the emotional eating behaviors and all the silly antics that are alive and well in the real world of dieting. Readers will learn to create new dieting strategies that make sense for them by raising their awareness of how food (especially chocolate) can often control their minds, moods and lifestyles. Heavy Lettuce: Adventures of a Journeyman Dieter, is a book about our present and future, our dreams and reality, and, perhaps, fewer trips to the refrigerator.Heavy Lettuce: Adventures of a Journeyman Dieter is not just another informative weight-loss book. It is a refreshingly humorous alternative to the plethora of ordinary diet books currently on the market. This book will entertain its readers and help them to lose weight by delving into and analyzing the dysfunctional mind of the average, every-day dieter.

Review of The Diet Smart Plan (Paperback)

I hadn't heard too much about this book until a relative had lost over 20 lbs using this plan.I was glad to see that this guy gets it.A diet should not be a starvation plan and should be easy for everyday people who have real lives to lose weight without going to extremes.

The book was easy to follow, didn't try to be condesending and beat you over the head with nutrional and metabolism jargon. It is simple and straightforward with easy guidelines. The author states an idea once and doesn't dwell on it for page after page. There are a few recipes, but not hundreds with strange ingredients that you have to go all over to find. Review of Amino Revolution (Paperback)

A very good manual on how to use amino acid supplements and their co-factors for achieving wellness and combating aging. All the important areas are covered, like dosage, combinations, the exact vitamins and minerals to take at the same time, as well as foods that contain aminos. The description of the metabolic pathways and how amino acids work are extremely interesting. Areas where amino acids can help are discussed under stress, anxiety, depression, immunity, cancer, heart disease, allergies, digestion, herpes, alcohol, smoking and looking and feeling young. Perhaps the book is a bit outdated, since there is no mention of the wonderful amino NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine) that protects the lungs and mucous membranes and is especially recommended for smokers. The lack of general index and an index to conditions treatable by aminos is a bit of a drawback as this book could be a handy reference work. But four stars overall for an interesting and illuminating text providing much needed information to those who want to take responsibility for their own health.

Review of Eat Fat, Lose Weight (Paperback)

Ann Louise Gittleman is right on the money.I found this book the most important book about dietary fat I have ever read.
I, too, used to subscribe to the "fat-free" lifestyle in sad, desperate attemptsto lose weight. After finding out just how much the body needs fat, especially the right kinds of fat, I realized that I was really"abusing" my body by ignoring it's needs for essential fattyacids.I have added flaxseed oil to my daily regimen and have started toincorporate dietary changes.I do feel much better.
I also appreciatethe scientific evidence that supports her claims. She sheds new light onthe body's need for protein and fat, something that flies in the face oftraditional nutrition advice.Since I've started to give myself moreprotein, I feel fuller longer and my sugar cravings are much reduced.
Ifyou have been living the "Fat-Free Lie," you owe it to yourselfto read this book.I was so engrossed in the thing that I finished it in aday.It is truly breakthrough.

Review of Suzanne Somers' Eat, Cheat, and Melt the Fat Away (Paperback)

After being a strict vegetarian for 15 years (and teaching cooking classes at a health foods complex), I was highly skeptical about Suzanne's system. But I'm a researcher, and I did my homework. Food combining is, indeed, an old and accepted theory of healthy eating. This is not an anti-carbo "diet"; it calls for the healthy food groups, only in different combinations so that insulin levels aren't spiked, thus causing the body to store calories as fat.
After reaching 50 and having a size 6 lean, mean machine, I suddenly put on matronly inches. Whose waistline was I seeing in the mirror anyway? Certainly not MINE! I couldn't fit into my clothes. Menopause wreaked havoc with my body. My low-fat vegetarianism didn't work at all for me anymore. All my workouts (Pilates, etc.) couldn't trim the excess inches I was continually adding. I began to feel desperate and out of control. So, as a last resort, I tried Somersizing.
I have known Suzanne was a fabulous cook ever since discovering an article about her culinary expertise 20 years ago. But these recipes and these sauces, in particular, are extraordinary! The latest book with its zucchini noodles, parmesan sauce, mozzarella marinara, and other delectable goodies is a triumph! I love to cook again! The simple wine reduction sauces are fabulous. The information about good fats is "freeing"! My husband and I are losing inches and eating tremendous food. My body is returning to its size 6 dimensions. I couldn't be more positive about this program. The information by Suzanne's endocrinologist is right on-target. It all comes together and finally makes sense. If you don't want to do the program, at least make the delectable foods! And if you DO want to follow the program, buen apetito and viva the weight loss! Also note: Suzanne's no-chemicals, no-preservatives sugar substitute, Somersweet, is due out in May. Another breakthrough for healthy cooks who have had to do without sugar for years. This woman is no dumb blonde. She's on the cutting edge!

Review of Get Out of the Diet Trap (Paperback)

This is a great and outstanding book. Finally a book that makes sense and is easy to follow diet wise. Its a diet plan that will fit everyones lifestyle. I would recommend this book to everyone.

Product Description
Have you ever wondered why those famous weight loss diets can pay millions of dollars for advertising year after year? If these diets would solve weight problems, wouldn't they have sold themselves out of business by now?

Some weight loss diets may actually contribute to the overweight problem. Poor nutritional advice may leave us undernourished. We may feel the urge to overeat because we do not get the proper nutrients when our body needs them. Meaningless diet rules are a poor substitute for natural instincts and common sense.

The book Get out of the Diet Trap guides the reader in reaching and holding normal body weight, simply by following his or her instincts. Most of us had this ability early in our lives. We were able to control our weight before we had problems and we should be able to do it again. Those without a weight problem still have this natural ability.

At the Time/ABC News Summit on Obesity in June 2004, the nutritional experts attending the summit agreed upon thirteen recommendations. The basic concept of this book supports eleven of these recommendations. The remaining two recommendations are being challenged.

I am writing about my own experiences. I tried many diets and always gained the weight back that I had lost and then some. Finally, I quit diets and did what common sense told me to do. My weight dropped and stabilized simply by letting my body tell me when, what, and how much to eat. Eating for me is now pure pleasure again.

Whenever I get hungry, I let my appetite lead me to the foods I need in order to be satisfied and to stay fit. I eat small portions of a variety of appetizing, nutritional foods. I enjoy every bite by giving the food undivided attention and by chewing well. I stop eating when the hunger stops.

Enjoying a large variety of appetizing foods (nothing is excluded) in small portions and chewing well is satisfying and gets rid of the cravings, a major reason why we overeat.

Can it be that simple? - Yes - Get out of the Diet Trap tells you why.

Review of Sugarettes (Paperback)

I like to read motivational books on eating healthy and was lucky enough to get this book.Dr. Olson's style of writing kept me captive as I sat and drank my coffee (with sugar.)After finishing the book instead of feeling guilty about eating sugar, I find I'm more "aware" of when I consume it.I think Dr. Olson is surely on to something when he writes about the fact that there are no "real" or "official" studies that link sugar to obesity or diabetes...similar to smoking vs. cancer (in the 50's and 60's.)

Having a grandmother who had diabetes and required insulin shots every day, I never knew what it was actually doing for her. This book cleared that up for me and explained it in such a way I actually understood without having to re-read that chapter again...meaning it was written with language I (and most non-scientists) could understand.

I'm glad I read this...and it sticks in the back of my mind when my grocery cart starts gravitating toward high-glycemic foods in the store. Great motivation for anyone who is trying to eat a more healthy diet.

Product Description
Can sugar really be as addictive as cigarettes? Sugarettes, by Dr. Scott Olson ND, explores our obsession with sugar and its resulting health consequences. The average person eats an astonishing half-pound of sugar a day. For many of us, we don't eat that much sugar because we want to, but because we have to—much like any other addict. While the taste might be sweet to the tongue, the effects of this sugary compulsion are not. Sugar addiction is a contributing factor to the worldwide epidemic of diabetes, heart disease, and obesity and other health problems. With such a tempting enemy, is it any wonder we are losing the health wars? Dr. Scott's Sugarettes forces us to look at our sugar addiction and what consequences it has for our health. It details specific and actionable steps every individual can take to master their diets and take control of their addictive relationship with sugar, empowering consumers with the tools to change their lives and their heath.

Review of 100 Weight-Loss Tips that Really Work (Paperback)

I am overweight and I needed a book that, in simple language, will guide me on the appropriate strategies to bring me to "normal" weight. After an exhaustive search, I came across this book and I have never regretted my decision to buy it.

I found the book easy to read and follow and the tips really make sense. I then went about implementing the advice given and it works for me. The book does not suggest quick fix solutions that often do not work and disappoint you but rather provides a methodical approach on what to eat and not to eat, how to effectively burn the fat through simple exercises like walking. The book also dispels many diet and exercise fallacies.

The only drawback with the book is that the author repeats himself often. This is not a major problem, however, as the repetition serves to remind the reader of the main points highlighted before.

Well, I have managed to lose 4 Kg in the past six weeks and I am on target to lose an extra 8 Kg to bring me to a normal, healthy weight with minimal risk of weight related diseases such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease or diabetes.

I bought this book, along with the cookbook, on Amazon a month ago and followed the diet plan closely for the first two weeks (I lost 13lbs.) and loosely for another 7-10 days for a total weight loss of 27lbs.It is not the easiest diet to follow, as the flax oil tastes really icky and the flaxseed fiber supplement drink is equally hard to swallow, but if you actually do what the author suggests, you Will lose weight. What I found the most difficult was eating eggs without salt and topping my protein portions with the flax oil as suggested.I think (I cannot prove it with personal research), that flax oil is much the same as linseed oil. It's not the initial taste, but the lingering aftertaste that put me off.I did learn how to cut back on carbs, fats and sodium (it's amazing what you can do with mustard and hot sauce) and did manage to modify my long term dietary intake, but after a month, I wanted to taste a grilled steak with garlic salt and maybe even a touch of butter, not to mention a crusty bit of bread! If you are more committed and have more willpower than I do, you can really lose a significant amount of weight on this plan and alter your palate.I have maintianed my weight loss (except for 4 lbs.), which is probably water weight due to increased sodium intake) and am very happy with the plan.I did lose a good amount of weight and learned alot on how to control portions and refined carbs without any real discomfort. The cookbook has lots of really good recipes, most of which could be elevated to stardom with some off-limits additions of butter! The mock mashed potatoes, using cauliflower was a real hit in my household and is still something I will fix regularly. This is an effective but not entirely painless diet plan suited for someone with real dedication.I thank the author sincerely for the many pounds I lost initially and for the good advice that I continue to follow. It's worth trying, especially if you have 20+ lbs. to lose!

Review of The Harcombe Diet: Stop Counting Calories and Start Losing Weight (Paperback)

The five day kick-start phase was really tough; I felt exhausted and headachy and miserable and all i could think about was eating bread, white rice, crisps and chocolate! But it's only five days so I stuck to it somehow...amazingly on the sixth day I woke up feeling great! Plenty of energy and no headaches or cravings. Since moving on to Phase 2 I've been really enjoying my food but for the first time in years am not obsessing about it. Have been able to give up sugar and sugary foods with very little effort.

Eating wholegrain versions of rice, bread, cereal and pasta has been so easy and tasty. i can't believe how great food tastes when you're no longer addicted to sugar.
