Review of Heavy Lettuce: Adventures of a Journeyman Dieter (Paperback)

At 224 pages, I began reading this coincidentally at a time where at 224 pounds, I felt overweight.Heavy Lettuce takes a very unique approach in providing information to the reader on the subject of weight loss.Instead of providing the reader with a boring weight loss routine and a diet that we all know, Flynn discusses the pitfalls of going on any diet: gaining more weight when all is said and done.

The book's title, "Heavy Lettuce" is the perfect title to describe the "heaviness" of doing the right thing: eating right and staying healthy when there's a lightness or carefreeness in justeating one more slice of pizza or just one more twinkie, or "just" 4 more weight watcher diet chocolate ice creams.

The book takes a unique approach for a diet book in that it takes strong analysis of one's "obligation" or habits that lead to splurging on food and ultimately killing one's diet plan.It delves into the habits we develop over the years and helps the dieter understand why a diet that seems to shed pounds eventually fails.

Unlike other weight loss books written by people who probably never had to go on a diet to begin with, Flynn's "expertise" at having, at one point, looked beyond his belly to see his weight at around 265 pounds, gives the reader a sense of realism and a new friend with an author whose words of wisdom give hope to the futility of dieting.

When you read a weight loss book from a person who was at where you, the reader, are currently at, the author's tone comes off as one of true empathy and integrity, even as an encouraging friend trying to brainstorm with you the correct manner in losing weight that is perfect for you.

Flynn delves into his life from when he was a child to when he began dating to explore the complexities of both weight loss and weight gain.It looks at how the "weight issue" affects one in college, the professional life, and looks at people's perception of a person on a diet both prior to losing weight and after losing weight. Then it looks at the contibuting factors to gaining weight: stress, greed, changes in lifestyle, proximity of 7-11 locations, and excuses.

He provides many humorous real life anecdotes that everyone can identify with.

There are many heart felt passages that the reader, who is trying to lose weight, will identify strongly with: for me, his theory on the inflated weighing scales at all doctor's offices made me laugh.

Then there are moments where Flynn looks at the dark side of gaining weight: how depression sets in when one cannot lose weight, how the world treats one when heavier than normal, how obsessed one becomes with food, and in those dark passages, he successfully manages to rescue the reader out of these difficult moments with excellent wit and humor such as his passage on giving his weighing scale a name and how he gives real life attributes to one of the book's major antagonists:the television!

The book provides excellent online resources and tools in the appendix section; and the author goes into specifics of various weight loss programs that allows one to look at the options out there.

Ultimately, the book does not corner you into taking any weight loss program, but provides the dieter with the proper mindset and mental framework to succeed in dieting.

Having lost 16 pounds since I read this book, I'd say Flynn's guidance is the best I've gotten from any weight loss book.

This will not be a weight loss book that will get lost in your pile of books. It will be one that you will refer to often, especially when you find yourself at a crossroads between exercising or eating that extra slice of pizza.Instead of pondering like Hamlet, "to eat or not to eat", get this book and suddenly the perspectives are much clearer: "do what is the best for your health."

Great read.A permanent one in my collection of reference guides.

Readers will learn to create new dieting strategies that make sense for them by raising their awareness of how food (especially chocolate) can often control their minds, moods and lifestyles. Heavy Lettuce: Adventures of a Journeyman Dieter, is a book about our present and future, our dreams and reality, and, perhaps, fewer trips to the refrigerator.Heavy Lettuce: Adventures of a Journeyman Dieter is not just another informative weight-loss book. It is a refreshingly humorous alternative to the plethora of ordinary diet books currently on the market. This book will entertain its readers and help them to lose weight by delving into and analyzing the dysfunctional mind of the average, every-day dieter.

Review of The Best Kept Secret to Permanent Weight Loss (Paperback)

Being a physician for four decades doesn't necessarily mean you know very much about what it takes to produce "permanent weight loss." But Dr. Barnet Meltzer realized in recent years that his medical practice should be more about preventing disease from happening in the first place through deliberate strategies that target keeping weight under control while arming your body with the best nutrients to make you happy and healthy for a very long time. That's what this book encompasses.

Dr. Meltzer realizes that in order to change your weight and health you absolutely MUST make certain changes in your lifestyle, including adding exercise, making smart choices about the foods you consume, keeping insulin levels stabilized, allowing your liver to function at optimal levels, removing unnecessary stress from your life, and supplementing with the proper vitamins daily. These are all a part of his "LYF-Style" factors that go into improving your metabolism. Detoxifying your body and setting it up for success first will get you going on the right track.

He shares about what he thinks are the proper ways to eat to be healthy which unfortunately focus too heavily on the low-fat options to resolve what is referred to as "appetitus," but I have to give Dr. Meltzer some credence for making people become more aware of what and why they are feeding themselves the way that they do. His holistic approach to dealing with these mental and psychological reasons why people eat like they do is certainly something that makes him stand apart from the other so-called health "experts" out there. Bringing about these necessary behavior modifications are a necessary starting point for anyone regardless of what nutritional plan you choose to get there.

The book is very science-minded with a flair for explaining some oftentimes difficult concepts into layman's language so you're not left asking yourself "What's he talking about?" after reading it. And Dr. Meltzer doesn't talk down to you either -- he acknowledges the hurt and pain you have gone through becoming overweight or obese and offers up real-life solutions for making that happen. Plus, he accurately identifies the addiction to food (especially sugary, high-carb ones!) and the constant overall obsession with food that far too many Americans are allowing to encompass their lives. Best of all, he offers strategies for breaking this ruthless cycle once and for all.

After you implement his metabolic changes and physical disciplines into your life, Dr. Meltzer then shows you how to revolutionize the way you think so you will create permanency in the new lifestyle you are now living. This "dynamic willpower" as he describes it is the key to keeping weight off forever. I'm not a big fan at all of the concept of willpower when it comes to weight loss, but instead having a steadfast resolve to make better choices for the sake of your health. But Dr. Meltzer makes a compelling argument for thinking much more positively in the direction of a can-do attitude regarding implementing these disciplines and applying active self-control certainly isn't a bad way to get there.

All in all, this 450-page book is loaded with some useful information for anyone deciding the time is right to grab hold of this weight problem and get it under control once and for all. Dr. Barnet Meltzer and his son Jordan are applying the concepts that have worked with the people they've come into contact with and they work by "outsmarting" the typical ebb and flow that happens when you usually go on a diet. Proven-science or psycho-babble? YOU DECIDE!

Review of The Fat Flush Plan (Hardcover)

I bought this book, along with the cookbook, on Amazon a month ago and followed the diet plan closely for the first two weeks (I lost 13lbs.) and loosely for another 7-10 days for a total weight loss of 27lbs.It is not the easiest diet to follow, as the flax oil tastes really icky and the flaxseed fiber supplement drink is equally hard to swallow, but if you actually do what the author suggests, you Will lose weight. What I found the most difficult was eating eggs without salt and topping my protein portions with the flax oil as suggested.I think (I cannot prove it with personal research), that flax oil is much the same as linseed oil. It's not the initial taste, but the lingering aftertaste that put me off.I did learn how to cut back on carbs, fats and sodium (it's amazing what you can do with mustard and hot sauce) and did manage to modify my long term dietary intake, but after a month, I wanted to taste a grilled steak with garlic salt and maybe even a touch of butter, not to mention a crusty bit of bread! If you are more committed and have more willpower than I do, you can really lose a significant amount of weight on this plan and alter your palate.I have maintianed my weight loss (except for 4 lbs.), which is probably water weight due to increased sodium intake) and am very happy with the plan.I did lose a good amount of weight and learned alot on how to control portions and refined carbs without any real discomfort. The cookbook has lots of really good recipes, most of which could be elevated to stardom with some off-limits additions of butter! The mock mashed potatoes, using cauliflower was a real hit in my household and is still something I will fix regularly. This is an effective but not entirely painless diet plan suited for someone with real dedication.I thank the author sincerely for the many pounds I lost initially and for the good advice that I continue to follow. It's worth trying, especially if you have 20+ lbs. to lose!

Review of No White at Night (Hardcover)

I'm a primary care physician in Seattle and I have treated hundreds of patients with obesity and obesity-related conditions (primarily metabolic syndrome, type two diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia).I have found fantastic success with low-carb diets for all of the above and in the past have recommended Atkins, South Beach, Protein Power, Sugar Busters, Neandrathin, you name it.....however I find that Dr. Gavin's book is extremely SHORT, EASY TO READ, AND MOST OF ALL, EXTREMELY SUSTAINABLE AS A LONG-TERM SOLUTION.

I really appreciate his book and recommend it highly. For some patients with extreme insulin resistance an even lower-carb approach is necessary, but for most people I think his advice is PERFECT.

Keep up the good work Dr. Gavin!

- three meals a day
- protein at every meal
- no white food at night (i.e., bread, pasta, sugar, etc.)

No White at Night became a regional phenomenon when a local Seattle station picked up the story. Review of How to Survive Your Diet and Conquer Your Food Issues Forever (Paperback)

I waited a little over a year to write my review; I wanted to offer solid evidence in favor of this book and approach to losing my disordered eating (binge eating/compulsive overeating in my case). I read this book about 11 months ago and quit dieting after having gained 20 more pounds on my diet last winter (bingeing my way through it). I have been implementing normal eating ever since to the best of my ability. What changes have taken place in my less than perfect attempts to eat normally?

-- I am losing weight.
-- My blood pressure is perfect when it was high (140/90) a year ago before non-dieting/normal eating.
-- My cholesterol is normal (I suspect it too was high).
-- I am exercising everyday without hating it.
-- I am eating foods I love with no fear of calories, carbs, or fat grams.
-- I am enjoying life again, no longer in a pit of despair asking myself all day long, "what can I do to quit eating and lose weight?"

Linda's book gave me perhaps the most important tool in my life (and in my eating struggles): the ability to think in shades of grey. I have always been a perfectionistic, all or nothing, black and white sort of person. No more-- I am free from dieting prison and all other prisons. Now my eating matches up with my other philosophical and personal leanings toward free thought and focused action. I urge you to read this book, and if you need more support, come on over to dietsurvivors' yahoo group, Linda Moran's group.Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Linda.

Product Description
Are you a Diet Survivor? Maybe your whole life seems to revolve around diets and weight focus. Perhaps even attempts at intuitive eating failed. This book will help you find your own inner wisdom, and a path to normal eating.
Binge eating, emotional eating, stress eating, and just plain overeating are often made worse by dieting, not cured by it. External changes just aren't enough. That's why even intuitive eating can backfire.
Unlike willpower, the work lies instead in changing how you think about food, stress, and emotions. And happily, you can stay in the present day. No need to delve into childhood memories or deep emotions.
Using principles of cognitive therapy, you will learn to adjust the self-talk that accompanies dysfunctional eating. Self-talk such as "I must drink this diet soda in order to get thin," "my children must not have junk in the house," "my emotional eating will never end," and "I canÂ't tolerate stress," have little basis in reality and lead to failure.
After some work at replacing your beliefs with facts, you will start to find your own food wisdom again. Maybe you havenÂ't had this wisdom since you were a baby, but itÂ's still inside you. And you will learn to think in shades of gray, instead of the black and white thinking that is typical of folks with dysfunctional eating.
Learn how to know when you are hungry and full, and how to be a picky eater, perhaps for the first time in your life. With practice, you will find that small, perfect, delicious portions do satisfy. Just as importantly, learn how you can cope with stress and emotions without running to the refrigerator. Learn to apply your mind to rational thought.
No longer will you feel that your body has betrayed you. You will once again be able to trust your body and mind to lead you to your ideal weight. You will never again have to bow to a diet as if it were some kind of god. Instead, any diet you choose will be your slave, not your master. In fact, as you finally free yourself from your attachment to food and dieting, your body will seek its ideal weight with no formal diet at all.
Regardless of whether or not you are overweight, if you have any kind of food issues such as emotional eating, stress eating, eating in secret, exercise addiction, using food for control, night eating, diet addiction, scale addiction, or binge eating disorder, this book is for you. Eating issues are more hidden than people realize, and are not always evidenced in oneÂ's appearance. Indeed, eating issues reside in our hearts and minds, not our stomachs.
This book is a fun, easy read that could change your life. Join the growing club of Diet Survivors.
