Review of Your Right to Be Beautiful: How to Halt the Train of Aging and Meet the Most Beautiful You (Paperback)

This is the first review that I have ever written, and I am writing this review because I think that the book is highly overrated and that this is a problem for those considering buying this book.Like others, I am sure, I use reviews to determine whether to buy a book. But this is the first book that received mostly five stars that I regret buying.

The reason why I regret buying this book is because the book is not very helpful in adopting the raw foods lifestyle.Rather than giving any practical advice, the book rambles on about beauty (the author discuss beauty envy, famous "beauties" of our generation, etc.) and gives some basic facts and generalities about the raw food diet, most of which are obvious to anyone who knows even a modicum about it (e.g., don't eat meat, dairy, and wheat--pretty obvious, eh?).It is clear that the author is totally obsessed with beauty, and so the book reads like what you would imagine one of her rants on beauty would sound like in person.Of course, there are some interesting facts scattered throughout the book, but not enough to make it worth buying. Also, while the author certainly knows a lot, you sometimes may doubt her reasoning ability based on some of the far-fetched conclusions she comes to.She also talks a lot about creationism, and her health theories are intimately tied with her religious beliefs. The most helpful things I learned from this books are the benefits of eating seaweed and fasting (though these sections are only a cursory foray into these areas), and that's about it (save a few random factoids).

So my advice is don't buy this book if you need advice on how to transition to a raw food diet or what a raw foodist eats on a typical day; the book is mainly an argument for why the author belives the raw food diet will make you beautiful (but there are still too few facts!!).You might want to consider buying this book only if you need inspiration to adopt the raw foods lifestyle, especially if you are doing it for beauty reasons, or perhaps if you want some basic facts on the raw food diet (i.e., you know nothing about it). However, I personally find the "I became a raw foodist and cured myself of disease X" stories more inspiring than arguments about how beautiful you will become, so if you are like me, I recommend just looking up such testimonials online, rather than buying this book. Finally, because I was so disappointed with the content of this book in comparison to what I was expecting giving the glowing reviews, I can only surmize that many of the authors friends wrote the reviews; she is from TN and a number of reviews appear to be from there.I hope this review helps!

Review of New Prescription for Childhood Obesity: Fight Childhood Obesity with Antioxidants & Phytonutrients (Paperback)

When I am people watching in my neighbourhood shopping mall, it never ceases to amaze me as to the number of overweight children that catch my attention.

As Dr. Billy Johnson points out in his exceptional guide, New Prescription for Childhood Obesity, America is now facing a real crisis when it comes to childhood obesity.Did you know that there are over 9 million children in the USA alone with childhood obesity? And worldwide it is has reached epidemic proportions with over 155 million affected.

Dr. Johnson is a medical graduate from the University of Florida and he did his residency in obstetrics and gynaecology at the Maimonedes Medical Center in New York. He holds a Ph.D in Molecular Biology/Microbiology and has practiced medicine in Virginia and Connecticut. In addition, he has written many articles for medical and scientific journals. He takes the problem of childhood obesity very seriously.

In the introduction to New Prescription for Childhood Obesity, Dr. Johnson fervently maintains, which incidentally forms the basis of his book, that the root cause of obesity and chronic diseases related to obesity for both children and adults is the low-grade silent inflammation associated with extra abdominal fat, along with low levels of antioxidans and phytonutrients. So grave is this that Dr. Johnson affirms that as the waistlines of our youth increase as they grow older, so does the prevalence of chronic degenerative diseases that once would only be seen in adults such as type 2 diabetes that now affect over a half a million children in the United States.
To conclude that it is quite frightening to envisage that there will be more and more children being treated with potent drugs for cholesterol and arterial plaques is an understatement. Just think about the ramifications when a child becomes an adult and the quality of life he or she will be required to endure.

In New Prescription for Childhood Obesity, Dr. Johnson examines all of the dangers of childhood obesity, its causes and what parents can do about it. His approach is quite different than the traditional method, which advocates that to reduce weight and fat it is necessary to eat less and exercise more, which according to Dr. Johnson does not work very well over the long term. It is his contention that it is essential to address the root cause which he breaks down into oxidative stress, insulin resistance and the low-grade chronic inflammation that are triggered by many factors such as unhealthy foods as well as environmental causes as exposure to pesticides, industrial pollutants, and toxins.

It should be mentioned, as Dr. Johnson points out in his introduction, that the book is intended for parents who want to help their children (5-12 years old) to develop healthy eating habits in order to improve the quality of their weight, body fat and health, and particularly targeting young children who might be at risk.

The book divides itself into fourteen chapters, five appendixes, selected references and an index. The first section of the book deals with the science and essential philosophy of healthy eating wherein Dr. Johnson counsels his readers that in order to fight obesity in children, it is necessary to pay particular attention to antioxidants and phytonutrients that are found in non-starchy vegetables and fruits.

Dr. Johnson's program, which is explored in depth throughout the book, focuses on balanced nutrition that can be tailored to the level of physical activity on a meal-to-meal basis with stress reduction as an additional component.

If you are wondering what are antioxidants, Dr. Johnson informs us that they are: "phytonutrients or chemical compounds that neutralize free radicals and prevent them from causing damage to healthy cells and molecules like DNA, lipids (fats), proteins and cell membranes. Insufficient antioxidants in your children's meals are the sole reason they store excessive abdominal fat that makes more inflammation in their bodies-leading to obesity and chronic diseases."As for phytonutrients, we are informed that these are the health promoting bioactive compounds or nutrients found in plants including vegetables, fruits, beans, and soy.

From this brief introduction pertaining to the vocabulary that Dr. Johnson uses throughout his book, readers are presented with a road map as to how to combat child obesity. It is quite amazing how much information Dr. Johnson covers in fewer than two hundred pages where we learn about the strategies for reducing obesity and inflammation, what is silent inflammation, medical consequences of obesity, food essentials, becoming knowledgeable and proactive pertaining to the foods we eat, recognizing food diversity, vitamins, minerals and essential fats, how to draw up a healthy shopping list, planning meals with your child, breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. The appendixes are very interesting and informative as they deal with sample daily meal plans, how children can have some fun eating, shares responsibility, and several recipes.

An interesting sub-section of the book is the reference made to MonaVie Acai Berry Juice. According to Dr. Johnson one way to address the deficiency of antioxidants and phytonutrients in children's diets is to supplement their diets with a unique formula that was recently discovered by scientists and available under the brand name MonaVie.
The key ingredient in MonaVie is the Acai Berry that grows at the top of tall palm trees in the Amazon Rainforest of Brazil.Dr. Johnson tells us that the Acai fruit has the highest antioxidant activity of any fruit or vegetable currently known on a gram-to-gram basis.

Dr. Johnson has a vast amount of experience dealing with the problem of child obesity and his experience shows, in deed, with his impressively researched and comprehensive study. It is difficult for me to think of a single issue that isn't broached in New Prescription for Childhood Obesity. He is particularly to be commended for his clear easy to follow format and without doubt readers will undoubtedly benefit from a vastly improved sense of the subject and the tools necessary to combat child obesity.

Product Description
About one in three American children is either overweight or obese. Childhood obesity is a crisis robbing youth of health and energy, and even causing children to die prematurely. Obesity among children, which is likely to carry over to adulthood, is also linked to a greater risk of high cholesterol, diabetes, early heart disease, and high blood pressure.

New Prescription for Childhood Obesity provides an innovative approach to fighting childhood obesity. The traditional method for weight loss and fat reduction has been to eat less and exercise more, but this does not work over the long haul. To lose weight and keep it off requires addressing the root cause of the problem: insulin resistance and the low-grade silent inflammation that is triggered by many factors, including foods and environmental causes such as pesticides, industrial pollutants, and toxins.

Now parents have an opportunity to change their child's eating and physical activity habits even before a weight problem develops. Complete with recipes to get you on the right track, this essential guide provides specific and simple strategies, techniques, and skills that will enable children to eat the right amount of food appropriate for their level of physical activity without dieting.

Review of THE 3:00 PM SECRET: Live Slim and Strong, Live Your Dreams (Paperback)

I am giving this book 4 stars despite the title of my review. Why?because the author seems to really know her stuff. She lays out the scientific basis for her program in a very readable and accessible way.Her nutritional and physiological facts and figures are not in question, at least not in my mind.In addition to sound nutritional advice, she offers a very basic but good weight training program for those not inclined to spend hours on a treadmill every week, but still want to maximize the benefits of regular exercise. And I did enjoy considering the book's assertions despite the rather cheesy vignettes that introduced each chapter. So where's the flaw?

The ironclad advice to not eat after 3 PM at least 5 days per week is at the heart of the weight loss program outlined in this book. And, oh yes, eat healthfully whenever you eat.At the risk of sounding skeptical, wouldn't following the latter advice even if you ignored the former lead to similar results?I do applaud anyone who has found success on this program, or in any other reasonably healthy way and am not so closed-minded to not thoughtfully consider alternatives.

But for me, the decision really came down to not wanting to live in a vacuum.Unless you are living alone and have only yourself to consider, or perhaps just a partner or spouse who is also on the program, it becomes something theoreticaly ideal but maybe not very desirable in its practical application. For me, that would be to not have that touchstone of our family dinners every evening, well past the 3 PM deadine in this book. Its a time of respite for our family, when we come in from our daily responsibilities and enjoy a meal (yes as healthy and light as we can make it)and share our lives for a little while. It is a positive thing for my family and I suspect for many others as well and it can't be easily had on a strict deadline when the public schools, corporate America and the world at large just won't cooperate.

That having been said, this book does have a lot to say about the way we look at food and eating. It is well worth the reading.Every reader will have to decide for themselves if the 3 o'clock deadline will get them where they really want to be, or if there are worse things than dinner at 6.

Review of The Rosedale Diet (Hardcover)

I ate6 months successfully according to the South Beach Diet (lost 10 kilograms and lots of fat), but suddenly I started to gain wait again, so I tried Phase 1 of Atkins, which worsened my situation; UNTIL I discovered and read the book of Rosedale; he explains why you should eat moderate quantities of protein (which I didn't do of course in Atkins Phase 1 ) ànd you should be careful with "normal" meat, because saturated fat cause a raise in leptin, which causes you to become fatter ànd you should eat LOTS of GOOD fats!! So I started to eat more fish, lots of olives and avocado's, lots of olive oil, nuts and less protein, and miracle oh miracle, I immediately lost fat and weight on the right places, WITHOUT any effort :-))

The key is leptin and Rosedale explain very well what leptin is, which type of food raises your leptin level, why that damages your health and even more important, he explains what you should and shouldn't eat in order to get your leptin in control again, with that comes weight and fat loss VERY EASILY

Review of Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss: The Visual Program for Permanent Weight Loss (Paperback)

Dr. Shapiro's book demonstrates very succinctly how to make some simpleyet profound changes in your eating styles/food selection and how thesechoices will ultimately lead to maintained weight loss. The biggest factorworking for him is the fact that this is not a "diet" -- i.e.,replete with complicated and stringent eating rules and regulations -- hesimply shows you that by increasing your consumption of fruits/vegetablesand decreasing your consumption of other foods (not necessarily eliminatingthem however) you can eat a good deal of food (even interesting food) andstill lose weight/maintain weight. The only thing I wish he had added tothe book: 1. more info on better meat choices (i.e., lean chicken etc.) 2.ideas for people with seafood allergies (i.e., he includes many examples oflow cal meals based on shrimp, scallop, clams, etc- - but if you'reallergic to seafood this part can be somewhat disheartening).Overall, asI mentioned in the title of this review -- it's a well-written,well-illustrated book and it is worth a read.

Review of The Leptin Diet: How Fit Is Your Fat? (Take Charge) (Paperback)

If you want the correct information about leptin, this is the book you will want to read. Byron Richards is a clinical nutritionist and the only author writing about leptin that will give you the correct information; the only author that will tell you the truth. It is easy to read and the science is represented in a format that is easily understood. What you learn will turn conventional thought on its ear. Other than the new science about the discovery (in 1996), importance and function of leptin, most of the nutritional science explained has been known for decades. Richards explains it in a way your biology teacher never could. Even doctors that know this science have fallen prey to the pervasive myths about diet in this country and are not giving patients correct information to change weight and improve health. My practitioner hadn't even heard of leptin and it is one of the biggest discoveries ever, in human biology.

I purchased all three of the books on Amazon dealing with leptin. (see my other reviews) The Leptin Diet is the only book that tells you the truth about the ever important issue of snacking. Richards is incredibly thorough in explaining what happens when your body is digesting the food you just ate and how snacking disrupts that crucial process leading to leptin resistance, insulin resistance and obesity. Eating according to Byron Richards' 5 Rules will restore the natural function of your hormones (particularly leptin and insulin)and is the only way to take weight off and keep it off. Don't be mislead by the title. This actually isn't a diet as we are all used to interpreting that word, but is actually the way all humans ought to be eating. I've tried many diets (the reason my leptin was out of whack) including Weight Watchers. I always lost weight but had cravings for sweets and carbs while dieting that continually derailed the effort and made it especially hard to keep off the pounds lost. Richards explains why this happens with dieting and why, when you lose weight following the 5 Rules, your body is forever rid of cravings and your weight will stablize for life. Following the 5 Rules is an easy way to eat: three meals a day, no snacking, and not eating after dinner are three of the rules that turn people off right away. I know what you're thinking as you read this---I can't do that, I need my snacks to get me through the day and at night to help me sleep. My reaction was the same and I argued with a friend recommending this book why it was necessary to eat every 3 hours which is what we've all been taught since the late 70's. When my friend told me about the 5 Rules, one being to allow 5-6 hours between meals, I knew, immediately, I could not do it. Well, I proved myself wrong.

After the first 2 days, I could easily go 5 hours between meals and be satisfied. I now eat 3 meals a day eating whatever I like with the correct portions of protein and complex carbs. Remember when Americans used to eat like this? I'm 50 years old and when I was a kid we ate this way, running outside to play between meals. Our bodies were doing the work of digestion and calorie burning while we went about the business of living. I no longer snack between meals nor do I need a snack at night. In fact, the problem I have had with insomnia since college is gone. I had very little energy to get through a single day before reading this book. Now, I have more energy than I know what to do with, I no longer crave sugar and simple carbohydrates, I no longer need a nap every afternoon, and I am losing weight every day. The changes have been pretty dramatic for my friends, as well. If someone told me a few months ago that I would drink my coffee without sweetner or turn down dessert because it sounded too sweet, I would have told them flat out that they, obviously, didn't know anything about me. I think the biggest example of change that says it all for me was the day I realized that the chocolate bar on the kitchen counter had been there for a week without me really paying attention to it. The changes sneak up on you just like that as your body enjoys the changes you have made.

I predict The Leptin Diet will become the revelation this culture needs to face up the fact that we are not being given correct information from our government or the media. Snack food companies have a lot to lose if we all stop eating between meals. Snacking has become a national obsession and the advertising by these companies perpetuate it. Moreso, EATING has become a national obsession, not the natural bodily need it used to be. The human body isn't designed to be ingesting food all day. Richards will explain to you why the myth of eating 6 small meals a day is completely unhealthy. If you love your potato chips and cookies, you can choose to eat them as part of your meal, but you will probably find yourself disinterested in them after your body is back in hormonal balance. I know you have probably heard this before, but this book truly changed my life. Every human body needs this book.

Review of Atkins for Life: The Complete Controlled Carb Program for Permanent Weight Loss (Mass Market Paperback)

As many people know, losing weight is often times easier than keeping it off. Atkins addresses this issue in his latest book, "Atkins For Life".
The book "Atkins for Life" is an excellent resource book. It is filled with practical advice and tips on how to make your low carbohydrate weight loss a permanent success.
Over the years Atkins name has been maligned and sneered at as he pioneered the idea that its not the fat in our diet that makes us fat its the excessive amounts of carbohydrates we have been consuming. The low fat diet was presented to Americans as the best way and the healthiest way to lose weight. However, recent researchhas revealed the low fat diet to be a miserable failure. As the fat has been taken out of the diet carbohydrates have been added in their place and many Americans have become obese and unhealthy. Dr. Atkin's proposal that eating less carbs can lead to weight loss and better health has been vindicated.
The Atkins weight loss method is a 4 step approach. Phase 1 INDUCTION is where you limit your carbs to 20 grams per day to jump start your weight loss program. Phase 2 OWL or ONGOING WEIGHT LOSS allows you to slowly add back carbs until you discover the amount of carbs you can eat and still lose weight.
Phase 3 PRE-MAINTENANCE has you slow your weight loss by adding in more carbs so good eating habits become ingrained. And in Phase 4 LIFETIME MAINTENANCE you learn to enjoy a wider variety of foods and maintain your weight loss. This book "Atkins for Life" discusses each of the phases but is mainly concerned with Phase 4 LIFETIME MAINTENANCE.
You can learn what to do to lose weight with this book, but for in depth information, you would be better off selecting "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution".
This book covers in great detail how to maintain the weight you have lost. Part One: A Lifetime Plan recaps the Atkins program. It includes information on the diet, the effect on your body, putting it into practice and how to benefit from exercise. Part Two: Eating for Life teaches you how to get your kitchen in order, and gives thirty meal plans with carb counts. It includes twenty meal plans for special occasions. 125 recipes for success are also given.
YES you can eat carbohydrates. You can have bread, cake and pizza or even wine. The key of course is knowing how many carbohydrates your body can handle each day without gaining weight. And using techniques to get the most bang from your carbohydrate buck. These techniques are taught in the book. For example if you crave bread Atkins has several pages of information to help you make the best selection. Breads are ranked on their ability to effect your insulin levels. There are also tips on how to enjoy bread without overdoing it such as eating the crust only. Atkins shares techniques like this for a variety of foods.
Comfort foods are a big issue for many. Atkins tells you what to choose or what to substitute. Eating out is another area covered. Best choices at different restaurants is given in detail. Atkins also includes mental tips to help you avoid backsliding.
Key to the book is the detailed menu plans given for 4 ranges of carb levels at 45g, 60g, 80g and 100g . Just adjust up or down so you are at your level (which you learn from his diet).Meal plans are simple and include snacks.A sample day for a 60 g plan would include 1 slice lemon zucchini bread, with an egg and ricotta cheese for breakfast. Meat loaf with whole-grain bread and salad for lunch.
Jerk shrimp with pasta or collard greens for dinner and 1/2 cup of cantaloupe for a snack. Carb counts are given so you can substitute as desired.
Crab Deviled Eggs, Cherry Muffins, Mixed Berry Shortcakes, Pinwheel Cookies, Roasted Chicken and Feta Cheese Wrap, Chocolate Souffle and Southwestern Style Pork Fajitas are among the 125 recipes. Recipes include nutritional information, but are not pictured.
The 370 page book also includes self tests and quizzes to help you stay on task. My favorite part of "Atkins For Life" has to be the success stories. There are a number of remarkable stories in the book with black and white photos included! Very inspiring!
The book "Atkins For Life" makes living a low carb life in our high carb worldeasier and enjoyable! I highly recommend it!

Review of Low Carb Vegetarian (Paperback)

I was excited to order this being vegan, but I was so disappointed upon receiving it, to discover that almost every recipe called for a processed meat substitute like deli slices, sausages, meat sub crumbles etc, or tofu.
Even when a dish has a solid complete protein in it , like beans, the author still adds tofu. Even the hummus had tofu in it....totally unneccesary.
To use this you will be investing heavily in Morningstar and Boca type products and eating a lot of soy.
I dont want to pretend I'm eating meat with each meal. My omnivore partner doesnt like fake meats either, so theres not much that suited our tastes for natural low carb natural wholesome vegetarian dishes.
There's not even a recipe for homemade seitan which is a wonderful low carb veggie staple.
There's tofu in just about every dessert - bleurgh!
Its a relatively thin book with no pictures besides the front cover which features fake meats predominately - should have looked at the picture on Amazon before I ordered.
I have done vegan low carb for a while and KNOW there's better recipes than this to be made.
I ordered at the same time the wonderful Veganomicon, so I think I'll be subbing out the high carb flours for low carb & getting far more use from that book instead.
Sorry! I really wanted to like this but honestly I wish I'd got a different veggie low carb book.
