Review of Your Child's Weight: Helping without Harming (Paperback)

I stumbled on this book while searching for family meal plans. What a revelation. We have one child who we have worried over for years regarding her eating habits and high weight. My husband actually picked up this book and read it cover to cover and, uncharacteristically, led the way in a radical change about how we think about meals and food in our household. This book is full of common sense for families who may be struggling with a child's weight problem. The basic idea is so ZEN--stop controlling, stop struggling, stop worrying and you change the very nature of the problem. Now we're no longer trapped in the double standard of telling one kid to stop eating and the other to finish her food. We're seeing our picky 3 year old actually grab a carrot on his own!!My overeater pushes back from the table when she's full and doesn't crouch over her plate like a famished animal. My middle child is learning to sit in her chair and enjoy the food that is available instead of asking for alternate meals. My husband and I actually have time to catch up with the kids. And I have been able to look at my own eating patterns (and their origins) in a new way. This is a profoundly wise book and I'm so grateful to have discovered it.

Product Description
As much about parenting as feeding, this latest release from renowned childhood feeding expert Ellyn Satter considers the overweight child issue in a new way. Combining scientific research with inspiring anecdotes from her decades of clinical practice, Satter challenges the conventional belief that parents must get overweight children to eat less and exercise more. In the long run, she says, making them go hungry and forcing them to be active makes children preoccupied with food, prone to overeating, turned off to activity, and likely to gain too much weight. Trust is a central theme here: children must be able to trust parents to provide as much food as they need to satisfy their appetites; parents must trust children to eat only as much as they need. Satter provides compelling evidence that, if parents do their jobs with respect to feeding, children are remarkably capable of knowing how much to eat.

Review of BodyFueling: Stop Watching Your Weight, Start Fueling Your Life (Paperback)

I'm a pasta and bread sorta person. While listening to my friends complain about headaches and always being hungry while they went the avoid carbs and heavy-on-the-protein diet route, I followed Ms. Landis advice. One year of lots of pasta and bread and munching on carbs whenever I felt hungry, I feel great and look great too! What more could you want?Okay, so I lost a lot of weight, too, without the hunger or the headaches!I'm 32 pounds lighter and gone from size 18 to 14.Next year, maybe size 12, hm?

I also recommend:Eat More, Weigh Less by Dr. Dean Ornish

Product Description

Most Americans don't know how to fuel their bodies for high performance - or even to meet their basic needs. Many think they know because the news or fashion media toss them an occasional piece of information. You manipulate and regiment your diet, but you do not simply eat with confident knowledge about exactly what your body needs, and when, and why.

BodyFueling changes that with user-friendly education about eating and fitness that translates basic science into everyday terms, and deprograms diet thinking - the prevailing body of unhealthy attitudes and beliefs about food and fitness.BodyFueling offers a clear-headed and refreshing look beyond thoughtless diet platitudes, assumptions, and trying to "fix" your body - and a provocative, positive perspective on investing in your health and future.

Eating to fuel your life, you'll enjoy more productivity, stamina, energy, vitality and leanness - and, most importantly, freedom from concern about fat, weight, and food.Eating will become joyful, healthful and satisfying. You'll be a powerfully informed consumer, not a sound-bite victim or a target for fads and fallacies. You won't "have to change your eating" - you'll want to fuel your body.

BodyFueling is not a program. It's not about what you are "allowed" or can't have.Instead of giving you something to follow, it gives you knowledge - and the power to make truly informed choices for the rest of your life.

Review of Barker's Grub : Easy, Wholesome Home-Cooking for Dogs (Paperback)

There was some really good information in this book. There weren't as many recipes as I would have liked but the recipes they have are excellent. Many of the recipes are geared to dogs that have heart problems or arthritis, etc. which was excellent for me.Excellent for anyone that does home cooking all the time for their dog because it is geared for a weeks supply.

Product Description
Canine Cooking That Will Have Them Begging for More

Which do you think your dog would prefer: dry kibble, mushy canned food, or a nice, nutritionally sound helping of Tuna Togetherness? Not surprisingly, most dogs would be happier -- and healthier -- with the latter, considering the dangerous preservatives, questionable ingredients, and mysterious flavoring agents often used in commercial dog food.

That's why Rudy Edalati cooked up Barker's Grub, a cookbook filled with wholesome, easy-to-prepare meals for your mutt or your pedigreed pooch -- and you'll find all the necessary ingredients in your fridge or at the local supermarket. She includes not only fun everyday meals, but healing meals for specific health problems, as well as special diets for different life stages, such as:
* Lo Mein Barking Style: the doggie alternative for Chinese takeout
* Beef Puppy Food: just the right mix for a growing dog
* Davie's Juicy Jiggly-Wiggly Anemia Diet: a blood-boosting dish of liver, rice, and spinach

Barker's Grub is informative (there's lots of canine nutritional information to chew on), inspiring, and just plain fun. The recipes are simple and quick -- after all, it's not just about health and longevity, it's about making the most of the time you and your dog spend together.

Review of What to Eat (Paperback)

Every now and then a book or two comes along that makes me want to get on the phone to friends or email friends to tell them they must read the book. This happened this past week when What to Eat by Marion Nestle and Gone Tomorrow the Hidden Life of Garbage by Heather Rogers arrived at my cottage.

Starting with this book 'What to Eat' the author does an excellent job of explaining the psychology of food from its invention (since so much is man made or processed), to the thousand mile journey it makes, even if organic, to most grocery stores, and the vast amount of waste that is involved in getting even organic fruits and vegetables to your local grocer. And that local grown fruits and vegetables are often turned down for local sale in grocery stores, but packed and shipped across country, all as part of a man made game plan.As is the label game and how many label issues are voluntary and not mandated like for genetically modified foods.

Her section on dairy is good.Personally I buy organic milk from here in northern California and no matter where we have lived I have sought out locals who would allow me to make a 'donation' for their raw milk, since I prefer to make my own yogurt, butter, cheese etc.The taste of regular homogenized milk from the store tastes horrid to me. Probably because its altered so much to allow for weeks on the grocery shelf. How I wish people would demand that their grocer carry dairy products from humane farms that are also whole and healthy.

Her section on meat is equally interesting. As she notes well, those who cull (kill, slaughter) the meat Americans eat work for low wages in very dangerous conditions, with the buyer all to willing to ignore just what happens to get that piece of meat on ones dinner table or fast food meal.Page 139 'Raising cattle also consumes vast amounts of nonrenewable energy. According to figures in the June 2004 National Geographic, it takes more than 200 gallons of fuel oil to raise a 1,200 pound steer on a feedlot. ... You pay the costs of loss of environmental quality in taxes, not at the grocery store.' What is interesting to me is I come from a family where we hunted in the fall and wasted little of any animal we got.We did eat some beef, chicken etc but this was home grown either by us or friends. But when I did my own homework and found out what the local slaughter house near a town we lived in, I knew how unhealthy commercially raised meat can be.And having a son who has worked in the grocery business I admit I wasn't surprised when he told me that the clean cold cases that you buy your meat from are called meat coffins in the business.

Her section on eggs is good and basic but I also urge people to read up on humane egg production because the fact is, most eggs are from hens crammed into cages, beaks clipped to prevent hurting other chickens, and eggs not laid in straw nests but on a slopped cage floor that allows them to coast down an egg gutter where workers come by every few hours and collect them.No matter where we have lived, even in suburbia Dublin CA in the 70's, and now in the Sierras we have had a few free range laying hens, for eggs, not meat.I think its inhumane to buy eggs from caged animals.

I also agree with her frozen food section, that if you cannot buy fresh fruits and vegetables, then buy frozen. But as she notes, you still need to read labels and buy only those items that have a single ingredient i.e. frozen beans, whole strawberries. Rather than whole strawberries in sugar.

I smiled when I read on page 356 'The huge SG Superstore in San Gabriel, California, caters to a largely Chinese speaking immigrant community. The store prints all its signs in Chinese characters as well as English, and the one over aisle 14B says: SPEAR ASPARAGUS, MUSHROOMS, COOKIES, CANNED FISH, and --get this-- JUNK FOOD.'Honest advertising to say the least.

And as the author notes, if we shoppers would set aside a few hours to just walk up and down the aisles and honestly read labels and see how many 'foods' are processed and loaded with cheap sugars and other flavorings and little real food, and then stop and ask ourselves how much of our hard earned money are we throwing away on 'food' that isn't healthy we might be shocked.

As Dr Mehmet Oz notes in his books, shoppers need to stop and read labels as if they were reading a medical prescription. If it has sugar or ingredients you cannot pronounce steer clear of the item.Consider Pepsi, Coke and other manmade beverages. Most six packs around here are around $2.50.What do you get for that $2.50?Water, sugar, caffeine and flavoring.Yet it costs less than .25 cents to make that six pack that has NO nutritional value! None. Same if its sugar free.

And as the author notes, we as a nation are paying dearly for the obscene profits the food manufactures are making. In poor dental and physical health. Diabetes and obesity levels are higher than they have ever been. Now I am not one to simply blame the food manufactures since I think as adults we have the obligation to grow up and act like adults and NOT allow unhealthy things into our lives.I actually am proud to be a food snob! But how do we get others to be food snobs to?

The book is helpful in how it also points out that eating whole healthy food need not be expensive, if we learn to eat fruits and vegetables in season, and if we substitute beans and grains for meat.

On page 489 she gives an excellent example of commercial sliced bread, and their ingredients, fiber and health claims with her comments. As an example there are 22 ingredients in Wonder bread, including enriched white flour, malted barley flour, and various minerals and vitamins ALL added, and not naturally occurring.Compared to home made bread that is easy to make and has less than six ingredients like whole wheat flour, salt, honey, yeast water, milk.

The section on infant formula should be read by any parent who isn't breastfeeding.Page 459 'Beyond the difference in cost, does it matter which level of convience you choose in an infant formula? It might. Powdered formulas are not sterile. ...In 2002, the FDA warned pediatricians that powdered milk formulas could be contaminated with Enterobacter sakaskii, a type of bacteria that causes rare but terrible and sometimes fatal infections in infants, especially those who are premature.'Considering the high number of preemies being born here in the states I wonder how many parents were told of this serious situation. She also has a good section on baby foods.I remember making my own, because commercial baby foods until the 1980's were heavily laced with sugars, and fillers. And as she notes commercial baby food is mainly for convience. But I think buying a $5 baby food grinder and simply taking some of your own steamed vegetables or fruits and grinding them at the table is much easier in the long run and you know the food is fresh.

Also appreciated her health food and supplement section and because I think those of use who strive to eat healthy need to be reminded to read ALL labels no matter where we buy our foods. As an example.I would buy the 100 calories Power Bars thinking they were 'healthy,' until I started taking my own advise and reading the labels. Now I reach for piece of fruit instead.

There is so much helpful information in this book and its a book I think anyone interested in healthy food should own or at least read. You may even want to donate your copy to your local library so hundreds of other people can also become informed.

Review of Special Diets for Special Kids (Hardcover-spiral)

I disagree tremendously with the negative review listed for this book. The author never implies the diet will work for everyone and is the sole therapeutic answer. In my opinion, if you are even THINKING of implementing a gluten-free, casein-free diet for your child, this book is a must. Notonly does the author provide a thorough review of the literature &studies done on relevant treatments for autism, & defines many of theterms so readily used, she offers a ton of GREAT, KID-FRIENDLY recipes(great for ANY kids that need to be dairy- and gluten-free, regardless ofthe reason). The author presents the information without bias, allowingthe reader to form their own conclusions whether the diet would be helpful. And while, yes, the diet may be difficult to implement (since casein andgluten are so pervasive in our foods), it offers a SAFE, alternativeapproach that we have seen work for MANY, MANY people in conjuction withother therapies. And as a medical professional, I was more skeptical thanmost that there could be any link with food & behavior before I heardand saw it for myself over and over and over first hand.If I had a childwith autism I would CERTAINLY TRY this.I would have nothing to lose andeverything to gain.

Review of The Ram Nut Diet (Paperback)

The Ram Nut Diet offers a new approach for weight loss that incorporates nuts in the diet as a means to reduce carbohydrates, control hunger, and decrease calories.Decreasing calories is the key to all weight loss diets.Given the current obesity crisis in the U.S. and worldwide, with no end in sight, there is a pressing need for innovative approaches to weight loss. There is an urgent need to help people lose weight by restricting calories and increasing physical activity (which results in negative calorie balance and weight loss). The Ram Nut Diet takes a new approach by recommending nuts, a nutrient dense food that contain heart healthy fats, to help control energy intake by controlling dietary carbohydrates.

Dr. Ram recommends a sensible approach for incorporating a wide variety of nuts in the diet - portion control is foremost in the recommendations put forth in the book.Unlike numerous diet books on the market, Dr. Ram recommends a program of physical activity in conjunction with his weight loss diet. There are many scientific studies that have shown the importance of physical activity in maintaining sustained weight loss.Other strengths of the diet program include: a balanced diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, and healthy carbohydrates; a support system (e.g. coach); and daily self-monitoring of food intake, exercise, and attitudes and life's events that affect adherence to the diet program. The 14 day meal plan and menu and recipes are an added bonus of the book.Collectively, the Ram Nut Diet recommends a healthy weight loss diet, physical activity, and behavior modification, all of which are current recommendations of many different professional organizations for healthy weight loss.

A distinguishing feature of this diet program is the focus on nuts as part of a weight loss program.Nuts are a powerhouse of nutrition including unsaturated fats (both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats), plant protein, fiber, vitamin E, folic acid, vitamin B-6, niacin, magnesium, copper, zinc, and potassium, all of which are important for health.Often times, weight loss diets lack essential nutrients because calories are reduced.Including a handful of nuts (about 1 oz.) helps meet nutrient needs in a calorie-restricted diet.Nuts also include a variety of bioactive compounds including ellagic acid, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, and isoflavones that have been shown to have beneficial health effects.

Readers who follow the Ram Nut Diet will benefit from the many health attributes of nuts. Also, by following the Ram Nut Diet, readers will be able to lose weight, and maintain lost weight with a sensible nutrition program.

Review of The Vegetarian Handbook: Eating Right for Total Health (Paperback)

I also bought this book shortly before becoming a vegetarian and found it to be a wonderful resource. It goes into a great amount of detail regarding nutrition, dispelling many commonly held beliefs about protein requirements and what is healthy.(No, vegatarians are not starving to death from lack of protein and just too stupid to know it, but they do have a 47% lower risk of heart attack!)
This book is very well research and has a huge bibligraphy section for those wanting to learn more.It details the scientific, social, political, and relgiious reasons that different vegetarians have for their lifestyle. My only complaint with this book is that the recipes inside are vegan, not vegetarian (no milk, cheese, eggs, etc.)But, vegan or not, they are delicious!

Product Description
Many patients that I see in my medical nutrition practice request specific detailed information in order to move toward a vegetarian lifestyle. Here is a book that will guide them along such a path.It will also assist current vegetarians to reach a new level of understanding by offering specific instruction for improving food habits. The instruction includes the most up-to-date and scientific data regarding food protein.By using the egg as a model of the near perfect protein source and comparing vegetarian foods with the egg, we now have available tools for increasing the benefits of protein from non-meat sources.

"Patients with certain medical problems should consider removing red meat and other animal proteins from their diet and moving toward vegetarian food sources. Some of these medical problems include the following: hypoglycemia, obesity, digestive disorders including diverticultitis and other colon problems, gout, and elevated cholestrol. Many specfic studies have shown that the vegetarian diet may help with these problems. This book presents a clear and sophisticated road map for becoming a vegetarian or moving in this direction." --Dr Martin Feldman

Review of Too Good to be True? Nutrients Quiet the Unquiet Brain--A Four Generation Bipolar Odyssey (Hardcover)

This book could have been called The Bipolar Patient's Encyclopaedia
Volume: 1. How the Moyer family coped with four generations of dysfunctional brains;
Volume 2. how conventional psychiatry relies on a DSM 'bible' to label and then medicate;
Volume 3. how a range of medical, genetic, dietary, environmental, infection and metabolic conditions can cause or contribute to bipolar symptoms.
A great aunt suicided before the family even knew she was depressed. The author's bipolar father lived through years of ups and downs and had the author on the edge of a precipice of dread. Author David Moyer became a mental health professional but faced a mid-life crisis when his son came down with bipolar symptoms. Training as a social worker wasn't enough to solve his son's problems. Conventional psychiatry wasn't good enough either. Although the usual bipolar medications quelled his son's religious zeal, he became less than normal due to negative effects. Schizophrenia medications stopped the visions but added more side effects.
An empathetic and concerned father, social worker David Moyer scanned the Internet for 'restorative' answers. Not expecting to find real help by networking, he happened upon the Synergy system of supplements, developed in Calgary, Alberta by another concerned father of several bipolar children. Euphamistically called True Hope. Was it too good to be true or did the vitamin, mineral and amino acid nutrients in the True Hope dietary supplements really quiet his son's unquiet brain? Charting his son's progress over a five year period, David Moyer noticed that medications and hospitalizations alternated with relatively 'normal' periods but his son seemed to do better when he took his nutrients and tapered the synthetic medications.
Pleased but wondering how mere nutrients could truly help, wanting an accurate differential diagnosis and the reassurance of proven effective treatments for Chris, the Moyer family embarked on a medical search. A series of health professionals told them that their son had biological and medical problems which are known to cause or contribute to symptoms of 'bipolar' disorder. Treatments seemed promising but the results were unclear. So many diagnoses: such a complicated case.
Bipolar sufferers, concerned families, frustrated caregivers and mental health professionals will find this book interesting, informative and thought-provoking. Readers of this well-researched book should be ready to learn and willing to stretch their minds toward restorative mental healthcare. Marvel at the complex family dynamics as four generations of Moyers coped with mental symptoms; consider the multiple puzzles involved in the spectrum of bipolar disorder symptoms; find true hope for restorative mentel healthcare as author David Moyer, LCSW goes beyond conventional psychiatry to explore leading edge biological and medical treatments while searching for the Holy Grail of bipolar recovery.
Maybe David Moyer doesn't have all the answers for his son Chris but he certainly asks a lot of stimulating questions, questions the status quo of minimalist mental healthcare and shares a wealth of interesting information. Well worth reading.
Review by Robert Sealey, BSc, CA

Product Description
This true medical detective story describes the author's four generation family odyssey that leads him to paths less traveled. He discusses multiple biological triggers and effective nutritional interventions for those suffering from bipolar disorder and other central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Exploring the role of infections, foods and additives in mental illness he challenges conventional wisdom, arguing for a closer look at a variety of contributing factors. Examples include Lyme disease, viruses, gluten, casein, MSG, and aspartame. He examines assumptions and practices in the justice and mental health systems that impact those with CNS disorders. Too Good to be True? describes some totally different ways - for patients, parents, teachers, therapists, police, prison guards, nurses, doctors and judges - to understand and respond to these crippling disorders.

Review of Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Everybody [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I love Mayo Clinic. To me, they are some of the best in the world in giving wanted information in an easy-to-read and enjoyable style and format.HEALTHY WEIGHT is divided into three parts: Getting Motivated, How to Lose Weight and When You Need More Help.At the beginning of each chapter there are about ten short sentences in bold print the key you in on the main points of the chapter which are very helpful and motivating.

Here are some key points that I have gained from reading that I'd like to remember and share:
"You have to cultivate a positive attitude about making lifestyle changes."
"Muscle burns more calories than fat does."
"Strength training can help burn calories at rest by maintaining muscle mass."
"There's evidence that being satisfied may be more strongly determined by the volume and weight of food you consume rather than the number of calories. In other words, fruits, vegetables and other high-fiber foods are bulkier...and fill you up better without the extra calories."
"If you focus on your health, then you'll develop healthy habits. If you develop healty habits, then the pounds will take care of themselves."
We could learn a lot from the Chinese: "The Chinese in Asia consume significantly more calories than do the Chinese in North America, yet they get a much smaller percentage of their calories from fat, weigh less, and are leaner.Their diet is predominantly plant-based, and the get about 90 percent of their calories from nonanimal sources. They also spend more time in vigorous activities."
"To limit calories, go easy on portion size and high-sugar and high-fat foods."
"Eat half the amount of food you normally eat, and eat more slowly."
"Eat when you are physically hungry, not when the clock says it is time to eat."
"Eradicate the "D" word...maintaining weight loss requires permanent change in activity levels and nutritional habits."
These tips are from just the first five chapters. (!) There's a wealth of information for all so enjoy reading this book and learning great tips to help you lose weight and maintain your loss successfully.

Soar!
