Review of Eat Right, Live Longer: Using the Natural Power of Foods to Age-Proof Your Body (Paperback)

The advise in this book can extend your life and improve your health. No one knows what the "optimal" diet is, but Dr. Barnard shows that there is overwhelming evidence that the common dietary practices in America are responsible for a great deal of avoidable illness and early death. He backs up his statements with health statistics and numerous references to studies published in well-known journals. He shows that high rates of heart disease, cancer, and many other life threatening diseases are *not* natural -- they are primarily the result of poor diet and/or smoking. For some diseases, our risk can be reduced more than 50% by following the sort of diet recommended in this book.
The book, like Dr. Barnard's previous books "The Power of Your Plate" and "Food for Life", is clearly written and invites the reader to examine the evidence and decide for himself. The author also gives suggestions for making a change in diet easier and encou! ragement that it will be an enjoyable, sustainable transition.
There are two things I don't like about this book: the second half of the book is nothing but recipes, and this book follows a trend toward dumbing-down the presentation (in comparison with "The Power of Your Plate" and "Food for Life").The author tries to make his presentation friendlier and more understandable to sixth graders through the use of analogies and explanations of biological phenomenon in overly simplistic terms. The book would be better if it contained more depth and more precise language. For these reasons I rated it only 3-stars.
Still, this book is well worth reading. If you're following the FDA's dietary guidelines, you are almost certainly shortening your own lifespan. The advise in this book could add years and improve the health of most Americans.

Review of Heinerman New Encyclopedia of Fruits & Vegetables, Revised & Expanded Edition (Paperback)

If you're looking for nutritional information on fruits and/or vegetables than this is NOT your book. The book does contain interesting information on the healing properties of myriad fruits and vegetables but most of it isbased on anecdotal information (ie a "friend") although somestudies are mentioned. However I do believe that the book does make aninteresting read.

Review of Good Food for Bad Stomachs (Paperback)

While Janowitz covers many digestive problems in this book, I was specifically interested in Chapter 12: What Should We Feed the Inflamed Intestine? Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease. He spends a great dealof time outlining a "low-residue" diet as well as a low-oxalatediet, both of which are purported to assist persons suffering from IBD. Since both diets are quite nutritionally sound, they are certainly worthtrying and his discussion on lactose sensitivity is one of the mostbalanced I've read. With only one chapter pertaining to IBD, it might bemore practical to request this book interlibrary loan rather than purchaseit, but if you have other family members with other digestive problems, theother chapters may have increased relevance and applicability!

Review of Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners: Familiar Western Food Prepared with Ayurvedic Principles (Paperback)

I own this book (ACFW) and The Ayurvedic Cookbook (TAC) and I must say that I rarely open this one, while I use at least 3 recipes out of TAC every week. The problem is that while this book stays true to the principles of Ayurvedia, the recipes aren't as tasty as they could be.This book tends to follow the Western macrobiotic ideals of "steam some rice, steam some veggies, let's eat", where TAC uses a wide array of spices.Comparing side by side similiar recipes, TAC's carrots and parsnips has about a half dozen spices, while ACFW's carrots, parsnips and peas has none.Which do you want to eat? This comparison is valid for many other recipes as well, which is somewhat disturbing given the importance TAC places on spices as a part of Ayurvedia. This book seems aimed at the more political/masochistic Western vegetarian (there is a sidebar on being nice to meat-eaters) who sees bland food as some kind of right of passage. While there's good information on Ayurvedia, you can do better with The Ayurvedic Cookbook.

Product Description
Amadea Morningstar, co-author of the bestselling Ayurvedic Cookbook, receivedmany requests for Western recipes that utilized Ayurvedic principles.Well, here it is!This is a "one of a kind" book that is sure to be a strongbestseller and represents a dramatic enhancement for people who want to practice Ayurvedic health practices in the West.

The author emphasizes the importance of exercise at length and explainsthe roles of fiber, fat, carbohydrates, protein, vitamin/mineral supplementation, and herbs.Ms. Napier also provides 28 days of menus and their accompanying recipes (which are healthy, creative, and tasty). This book will remain a useful resource in my professional practice and daily life!Thank you, Kristine Napier!

Review of Jane Brody's Good Food Book: Living the High Carbohydrate Way (Hardcover)

I've been using this cookbook for almost 20 years. Over that period of time the current, latest nutritional advice continues to change and contradict that which came before. But I still love these recipes and I'm still alive and not fat. [Those who don't eat too much and excercise seem to do OK.]
These recipes are tasty and easy to prepare. Jane's Turkey Carcass Soup is the best standard soup stock recipe I have ever found. If you actually enjoy vegetables - and don't need to approach them like medicine or something to force yourself to eat beacause they're "good for you" - then I highly recommend this book.

Product Description
From the nationally bestselling author of Jane Brody's Nutrition Book comes "the ultimate, reabable, understandable, practical, and useful book on how to live sensibly and well . . . a primer on the new nutrition and weight control" (Craig Claiborne). Review of Whole Food Facts: The Complete Reference Guide (Paperback)

I really enjoyed reading Whole Food Facts- The Complete Reference Guide by Evelyn Roehl. This is a very well written and informative book.It speaks to Dairy Products, Fats and Oils, Fruits, Grains, Legumes, Nuts and Seeds, Sweeteners, Vegetables, Other Foods, Types of Diets, and the Value of Nutrients and Food Supplements. It explains WHAT they are, HOW your body uses them, How Nutritious are the Specific Foods.Sometimes the Book explains how to USE and STORE certain types of food and explaines the different types of a certain food, such as Fats and Oils.It further addresses the Vitamins found in each type if food and some additatives. It provides a guide for how long you can store fruit and the peak season of availability of the fruit.Toward the end, there is a section on Vitamins and their uses in the body that I found extremely interesting. It also recommended amounts needed for good health.I am very glad I bought this book as it is a great reference book.It even tells me how to prepare a few foods- not receipes, just preparation.

Review of Strong Women Eat Well (Paperback)

Dr. Nelson notes that the Journal of the American Medical Association has reported that 300,000 premature deaths occur each year due to poor nutrition and physical inactivity. The book's key message is to eat mostly "real, whole foods" rather than processed ones, drink enough water, and get out and walk!
Many books on nutrition skip any discussion of water.I was pleased to see that this book did a nice job of explaining why water is so important.
Each section hit on an important point that you need to know.Whole grains solve the glycemic loading problem that causes you to stress your blood sugar levels and can lead to weight gain. You should eat lots of fruits and vegetables.Avoid salt and sugar. You can get too much calcium.Soy is a valuable source of protein. Some fats help you, and some are killers.
The book also has a fine section on how to read food labels, another on eating out, and some tasty-sounding healthy recipes. My favorite section was on what to keep in the house.
The book's simple focus on eating the right foods, avoiding the wrong foods, drinking enough water, and walking does have a downside. Each section seemed to miss at least one other point that you need to know.
Here are a few examples. With water, if you weigh more, you need more water. This book is one size fits all. Also, if you drink caffeinated beverages and alcohol, you will lose more water due to the diuretic effects of these drinks, and need to consume more water than is suggested here.
With calcium levels, research has shown that getting enough calcium doesn't seem to eliminate bone breakage. In fact, studies have shown that women in countries where they get less calcium have fewer bone breaks. It isn't clear why that's the case, so don't cut your calcium intake yet.
The book also recommends the USDA Food Pyramid and the fifth set of guidelines that came out in 2000, which doesn't reflect the latest research from all the long-term studies of how nutrition affects health as I have read about that food pyramid in other recent books on the subject.
Like most such books, there is little customization for age, sex, and blood type.
If you are looking for a book on this subject, you should also consider Healthy Women, Healthy Lives and Eat, Drink and Be Healthy which will give you more detail on these points, more information about what foods to favor and disfavor, and how each food is related to various diseases. You might also enjoy Your Body's Many Cries for Water....
After you have worked on a healther physical lifestyle, how can you improve your emotional lifestyle? In Love and Survival, Dr. Dean Ornish points out that having loving relationships helps health more than anything else.Be sure to read Relationship Rescue if you would like to work on your relationships.
Live well in all dimensions of your life!

Review of Eating for Two: The Complete Guide to Nutrition During Pregnancy (Paperback)

This book was interesting and informative... however I was disappointed because I was hoping for suggestions on sample menus and recipes.

Review of The Dietitian's Guide to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) (Paperback)

*This is the review I wrote for my magazine, PCOS Today*

Angela Grassi, a licensed dietician headquartered in Haverford, Pennsylvania, has been a regular columnist published in PCOS Today Magazine. She has focused her entire practice on the service of women and girls with PCOS. Earlier this fall, she completed and published her new book, "The Dietician's Guide to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome." Her book is well worth the purchase price...for both professionals working with PCOS clients, as well as women with PCOS. Here's the review.

My copy of Angela Grassi's recent book, "The Dietician's Guide to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome," has a glass-bottom stain on it and part of the cover is ripped. Ms. Grassi's jam-packed tome of up-to-date information about PCOS has been used and reused by this author since its release just a few months ago.

During the past decade or two, a number of books about PCOS have been released. Some are rather general, others carry a heavy load of relevant content. The difference with Ms. Grassi's book is that while it was originally written with practicing dieticians and nutritionists in mind, women with PCOS will find it a thorough resource. Its more than 200 pages, including appendices, cover topics including both the physical and psychological aspects of PCOS, dietary strategies, alternative and complementary treatments, PCOS in adolescence, pregnancy, eating disorders, and sample menu plans. For dieticians, Ms. Grassi provides common IDC-9 codes and case studies, as well as organizations and publications that can provide both professionals and PCOS patients with more information about the disorder.

Throughout the book, Ms. Grassi asks a number of compelling questions and makes a number of compelling statements about working with women with PCOS. Does the American diet cause PCOS? The role of the dietician in treating PCOS. Weight loss to improve PCOS: Is it necessary? Polycystic ovary syndrome and pregnancy. In full detail, Ms. Grassi covers the Glycemic Index, postpartum weight management with PCOS, antiandrogen therapy in adolescence, thorough descriptions of herbs and supplements that can be used to decrease the severity of PCOS symptoms, and questions dieticians can use to screen patients for PCOS. Especially helpful to this author, who likes to have quantifiable information to gauge her food intake by, is a table of suggested carbohydrates amounts for women with PCOS, dependent on calorie intake. As a reformed label reader, I can now decipher how each serving's grams of carbohydrates fit into the grand scheme of my diet.

Rounding out Ms. Grassi's book are sample menu plans and a candid discussion of quality of life issues affecting women with PCOS, and how they can lead to the development of eating disorders. Following each chapter is a complete list of references for both professionals and women with PCOS to find more information.

Designed to accompany this guide is the PCOS Nutrition Handout Series on CD. Included on the CD (sold separately) are 20 printer-ready assessment, food exchange, mindful eating exercises, resources for PCOS clients, shopping for whole grains, and nutritional supplement handouts, among many more, for use by dieticians and nutritionists working with PCOS clients.

Published by Luca Publishing of Haverford, Penn., The Dietitian's Guide to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a book that not only every practicing dietician and nutritionist should have on their shelves, but any professional who comes into clinical contact with women suffering from PCOS. But not only will professionals working with PCOS clients find this book helpful, but women with PCOS will be well-armed to work with their doctors, dieticians, reproductive endocrinologists, and gynecologists to fight the symptoms of PCOS and its related issues. "Although it's a little technical," Ms. Grassi said, "I think it is a great resource for all women with PCOS."

Product Description
A much needed book for any health care provider, as well as women with PCOS themselves! It is estimated that 10% of the female population has PCOS. Lifestyle modification of diet and exercise has been established as the preferred method of treatment. Dietitians and other health care professionals, because of their unique role in developing long-term relationships with their patients, may be the first to recognize the syndrome. This book, the first of its kind, will give dietitians and individuals the necessary knowledge and training to effectively treat PCOS.

Review of The Get with the Program! Guide to Good Eating: Great Food for Good Health (Hardcover)

Although I enjoy hearing and reading Bob Greene's books, there was nothing new in this one. Most of the pertinent information has already been heard on "Oprah" or in his previous material.
Though the recipes sounded delightful, they were not practical or convenient. Several ingredients would require many stops at specialty stores.

Product Description
The first cookbook from best-selling author Jonny Bowden!
Jonny Bowden's The Healthiest Meals on Earth contains recipes for more than sixty dishes and drinks that use nutritious and healthy cooking methods. Forty of these dishes will combine to create ten different "poly-meals", specially crafted meals that contain key nutrients found to promote long-term health. They include Sweet and Thai Spicy Shrimp and Fruits, Persian Chicken with Autumnal Accompaniments, and the "iron booster" of Tender Calf's Liver and Sweet Beets. A "Healthiest Holiday Meal" features Citrus Stuffed Turkey, Zippy Fruit Salsa, and Sweet Potato Pie. The poly-meals are designed to be eaten three-to-five times a week.
Another ten recipes are not part of the poly-meal structure; instead they are one-pot meals that include Slow-Cooker Chicken Curry, Miso Bean Soup, and Venison Stew. A chapter on drinks will include nutritious smoothies, so-called "green drinks", and others. Jonny will provide healthy cooking tips throughout the book, as well as an analysis of the foods in each recipe. Side dishes, such as Cold Strawberry Soup and Veggie Slaw with Flax Oil, and desserts, such as Raw Chocolate Fondue, are also featured.
This book pairs well with Bowden's successful 150 Healthiest Foods, and can even be used as a companion cookbook.

Review of Omega Rx Zone: The Miracle of the New High-Dose Fish Oil (Mass Market Paperback)

This book gives a complete and easy to understand of the complex way in which the EPA&DHA long-chain fatty acids influence the hormonal system, and how their lack in the diet affects the body. The author explains why eating fish is not the best way to get omega-3's, mainly because of the heavy chemicals that fish accumulate in their tissues. He describes the differences between different types of fish oil and why (in his opinion) pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is the best way to supplement omega-3. He explains which blood test will tell you how healthy you are.

There is also a very interesting hypothesis on how a diet rich in omega-3 helped the development of the human brain in its early stages of evolution.

There are detalied explanations of how diseases such as cancer and auto-immune illnesses are related to long-chain omega-3's. The author explains how "silent" (cell) inflammation is the cause of many (if not most) major diseases today, especially chronic conditions.

There are explanations of the relationship between omega-3's and emotional well-being, as well as how they improve mental abilities.

As a sidenote, apparently there is currently only one brand on the market that satisfies the author's standards. They have a comparison table on their website showing how their brand offers the most omega-3 per dollar (to convince that it is worth the high price)--but they only compare with certain brands--and I know of at least another highly respected fish oil brand that offers even more omega-3's for half the price. So the only argument left is that pharmaceutical-grade fish oil is completely free of contaminants, whereas other types of oil are not. This argument is in my opinion not very strong, because there are enough brands (such as the one I was talking about before) that have levels of contaminants so small that they are not detectable in a lab--therefore which are really of negligible risk (compared for instance with the toxic substances found in our tap water).

Nevertheless, the in-depth analysis on the remarkably positive effects of EPA&DHA's on health is excellent, and I highly recommend this book.

Review of 1,001 Low-Fat Vegetarian Recipes, 2nd ed. (Paperback)

I suppose, like the reviewer above said, that this isn't a beginning vegetarians cookbook, in the sense that it does not guide you through what it means to be vegetarian etc, etc, BUT, I'd like to point out that nowhere on the book does it say that is what it is (there are books for that).I also will agree that yes, in SOME of the recipies there are strange ingredients: fat-free half and half, cactus paddles, flavored cooking sprays... but there are over 1,000 recipies!Of course they had to get creative!
I think this cookbook is excellent, if you've been a vegetarian for awhile, and you like to cook, then this book is perfect for spicing up your everyday cuisine. The recipies are easy to follow, and so far (I've cooked a lot of dishes from this book) almost everything has been yummy.I'd like to add that if I can't find something I substitute.I use veggie bullion in place of stocks, and skim milk in place of fat free half and half, and I've never had any problems. The book has widened my scope on mixing vegetarian ingredients, enabling me to scan my pantry and whip up combinations I'd never thought of before. There is so much to chose from that you can keep it simple or get a little fancy!
Highly recommended!

Review of American Heart Association Low-Calorie Cookbook: More Than 200 Delicious Recipes for Healthy Eating (Hardcover)

I am extremely pleased with many of the recipes in this cookbook. The cookbook is broken down into appetizers, snacks, and beverages, soups, salads, seafood, poultry, meats, vegetarian entrees, vegetables and side dishes, breads and breakfast dishes, and my favorite...desserts! Every recipe is for 4 servings, but thankfully, the book tells you what is considered 1 serving. 4 servings is FINE since most of the meals can be packaged up and eaten for lunch or dinner the next day.

I have made the beef and broccoli stir-fry, the pineapple meatballs, the shepherd's pie, the apple dumplings, the macaroni and cheese with spinach, and the gnocci with spagetti sauce. My husband and I were AMAZED with how flavorful the gnocci and the pineapple meatballs were...we absolutely loved these meals! The apple dumplings were delicious, but they were a little challenging to make...the pie filling kept eeking out the sides when I was trying to fold them into triangles like the directions said. The only one I will not make again was the macaroni and cheese with spinach. I could barely taste the low-fat cheddar cheese and I felt like I was just eating cooked noodles and spinach.

I work full time and I'm also a graduate student, so you can imagine that I don't have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen. There are recipes in this book that take maybe 15-20 minutes to prepare and cook, such as the pineapple meatballs. The gnocci, obviously, will take longer to make and I recommend that some recipes should be attempted on the weekend and made in bulk since you can devote more time to them.

Nonetheless, I am highly impressed with the recipes I have tried in this book! I have used it to keep myself on a 1200 calorie diet and after using it for just a week and a half, I've lost 5 lbs! The recipes are "normal"...no weird casseroles or anything here. And the desserts aren't just fruit like so many other cookbooks push...apple dumplings were fantastic and I'm going to make the mint chocolate cupcakes with devil's food cake shortly.

I recommend this book for anyone trying to eat healthier while still eating their favorites. This book has a recipe for everyone and the nutritional information is broken down for you per serving, so you'll have no problems tracking your caloric or fat intake. Buy it - you won't regret it!
