I even gave it to my gynaecologist to read and she gave it the thumbs up. I just wish more of the doctors I have seen over the last few years had read this book too!! Dr Evans, thanks for writing such a wonderful book - it has really been a huge help to me.

Review of Healing Syndrome O: A Strategic Guide to Fertility, Polycystic Ovaries, and Insulin Imbalance (Paperback)

Though I have already read quite a bit about Syndrome O (PCOS) and felt I was well informed, I was able to gain even more understanding from this book.It provided a large amount of information about what happens on the cellular level in our bodies to fuel Syndrome O (PCOS)symptoms and complications.Understanding the science of it all helped reframe my thinking about this disorder and provided the extra push I needed to take back control of my body. I would definitely recommend this book to others dealing with a Syndrome O (PCOS) diagnosis.

Product Description
Understanding and overcoming the leading undiagnosed cause of infertility, miscarriage, menstrual problems, obesity, and hormonal disruption.

Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of women diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which causes infertility and repeated miscarriage as well as more cosmetic problems, such as obesity that is resistant to normal weight-loss measures. Not surprisingly, women with this syndrome also suffer from depression and damaged self-esteem as a result.

Thus far, medical science has had little to offer women with PCOS. In this book, however, leading reproductive specialist Dr. Ronald Feinberg provides a new way of looking at the disorder, linking it to bodywide metabolic irregularities, insulin resistance, nutrition, activity, and stress-a combination of health issues that collectively make up what he has termed "Syndrome O." And this understanding brings new hope for overcoming it.

Written in a compassionate, inspirational, and motivational style, Healing Syndrome O discusses the causes and complications of this condition and provides a targeted plan to help women balance and repair their overall health, overcome symptoms, and, especially, restore their fertility.

Review of Alternative Medicine Guide to Women's Health 2 (Paperback)

Alternative Medicine Guide to Women's Health 2 is "about alternative approaches to women's health--approaches not generally understood and, at this time, not endorsed by the medical establishment."The authors, Burton Goldberg and the editors of Alternative Medicine, recommend that readers discuss all alternative treatments with their physicians. They say that many women "have found their physicians to be open to new ideas."
Seven conditions are fully discussed:fibrocystic breast disease, breast cancer, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, environmental illness, and depression. The causes of each are detailed, along with major symptoms and testing procedures.
Alternative medicine therapies are provided for each condition. The authors also include explanations of why the alternatives may be better than conventional medicine.Addresses and phone numbers are provided for doctors, clinics, and laboratories that offer testing and other assistance.Twenty-two patient success stories attest to the effectiveness of alternative treatments.
The writing is easy to understand, with "quick definitions" sprinkled throughout the text.Drawings and photographs clarify technical descriptions. The endnotes include the sources of information on which the book is based, and can be used by those wishing to do their own research.
Goldberg says his book "is here to tell you that you don't have to live with your health problems" and "that alternative medicine has practical solutions for identifying and treating the underlying causes and thus can reverse the illness itself."
Alternative Medicine Guide to Women's Health 2 emphasizes prevention of disease, and is a must-have for women of all ages.

Product Description
No longer will women have to "put up" with their health problems. This book is a woman's indispensable guide to reversing health problems based on the expert advice of leading physicians. Review of Your Menopause, Your Menotype : Find Your Type and Free Yourself from the Symptoms of Menopause (Paperback)

So much information contained in one book.Helped me a lot with my perimenopausal symptoms.

Product Description
For women seeking an alternative to HRT, this book offers individualized natural treatment options for the symptoms of menopause.

All too often, doctors who practice traditional medicine are quick to prescribe HRT as the only way to treat menopause, when, in fact, asrecent studies have shown, it is often ineffective and unnecessary. Naturopathic doctors Angela and Mark Stengler show women how to determine their "menotype" based on their own unique combination of physical and emotional symptoms, heredity, diet, and lifestyle. This book grants women the critical information they need not only to safely and naturally treat their menopausal symptoms, but also to help them avoid other age-related disorders such as osteoporosis. AUTHORBIO: Angela Stengler, N.D., is the host of a weekly health radio program and the coauthor of Your Vital Child.

Mark Stengler, N.D., is the author of The Natural Physician's Healing Therapies.

Review of Strong Women Eat Well (Paperback)

Dr. Nelson notes that the Journal of the American Medical Association has reported that 300,000 premature deaths occur each year due to poor nutrition and physical inactivity. The book's key message is to eat mostly "real, whole foods" rather than processed ones, drink enough water, and get out and walk!
Many books on nutrition skip any discussion of water.I was pleased to see that this book did a nice job of explaining why water is so important.
Each section hit on an important point that you need to know.Whole grains solve the glycemic loading problem that causes you to stress your blood sugar levels and can lead to weight gain. You should eat lots of fruits and vegetables.Avoid salt and sugar. You can get too much calcium.Soy is a valuable source of protein. Some fats help you, and some are killers.
The book also has a fine section on how to read food labels, another on eating out, and some tasty-sounding healthy recipes. My favorite section was on what to keep in the house.
The book's simple focus on eating the right foods, avoiding the wrong foods, drinking enough water, and walking does have a downside. Each section seemed to miss at least one other point that you need to know.
Here are a few examples. With water, if you weigh more, you need more water. This book is one size fits all. Also, if you drink caffeinated beverages and alcohol, you will lose more water due to the diuretic effects of these drinks, and need to consume more water than is suggested here.
With calcium levels, research has shown that getting enough calcium doesn't seem to eliminate bone breakage. In fact, studies have shown that women in countries where they get less calcium have fewer bone breaks. It isn't clear why that's the case, so don't cut your calcium intake yet.
The book also recommends the USDA Food Pyramid and the fifth set of guidelines that came out in 2000, which doesn't reflect the latest research from all the long-term studies of how nutrition affects health as I have read about that food pyramid in other recent books on the subject.
Like most such books, there is little customization for age, sex, and blood type.
If you are looking for a book on this subject, you should also consider Healthy Women, Healthy Lives and Eat, Drink and Be Healthy which will give you more detail on these points, more information about what foods to favor and disfavor, and how each food is related to various diseases. You might also enjoy Your Body's Many Cries for Water....
After you have worked on a healther physical lifestyle, how can you improve your emotional lifestyle? In Love and Survival, Dr. Dean Ornish points out that having loving relationships helps health more than anything else.Be sure to read Relationship Rescue if you would like to work on your relationships.
Live well in all dimensions of your life!

Review of Hormonal Balance: Understanding Hormones, Weight, and Your Metabolism (Paperback)

Dr. Isaacs' book will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about hormones, possible symptoms of imbalances (including overweight), and how to balance your hormones and maximize your metabolism using simple dietary suggestions - all in a very easy-to-read style.
For example, if you are experiencing hyperandrogenism (a symptom of polycystic ovarian syndrome), this book will explain it to you in simple terms. Or, if you have diabetes or insulin resistance, Dr. Isaacs will clearly explain what is happening inside your body, in a way that is easy to understand. If you have hypothyroid or hyperthyroid, Dr. Isaacs tells you what's going on and what to do about it.
It includes information on hormones, metabolism, insulin, the "glycemic index", androgen disorders, the thyroid hormone, cortisol, stress, the adrenal gland, the growth hormone, hunger hormones, and more. Many of the issues he discusses seem to go together, like pieces of a giant puzzle, but he makes it very easy to follow along. And ... this is the best part ... Dr. Isaacs suggests simple ways to help balance your hormones once and for all!
The letters after Scott Isaacs' name are: M.D., F.A.C.P., and F.A.C.E. Those letters represent: M.D. - Doctor of Medicine, F.A.C.P. - Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and F.A.C.E. - Fellow, American College of Endocrinology. Endocrinology is the study of the endocrine gland, hormones, and metabolism. The criteria for obtaining the F.A.C.E. designation can be found at: http://www.aace.com/college/criteria.php
The criteria require that the doctor be actively practicing and be a member in good standing for at least one year ... in addition to other requirements. In other words, Dr. Isaacs is a licensed medical doctor, who is actively practicing in the specialty area of endocrinology, which is the study of hormones and metabolism. These credentials make him a fine expert to learn from.
This book is so easy-to-read, and contains such important information to our overall health, that EVERY woman should read it! If you are considering this book, buy it!

Product Description
First published in 2002 and now updated and expanded, this guide pioneered the idea that hormones play a key role in weight loss and weight control. Writing in clear, simple terms, Dr. Isaacs profiles each hormone system, discussing what can go wrong and how imbalances can affect weight and even perpetuate obesity. The book explains how to reverse symptoms of hormonal imbalance through diet changes and other remedies, and then expands the discussion, teaching readers how to deal with everything from menstrual cycles to diabetes by recognizing and remedying hormonal problems.

Review of Managing PCOS For Dummies (Paperback)

The book has a lot of the reg info on what PCOS is, and spends well over half the book talking about diets and food. It's written by a dietician, and so it's helpful for someone looking for tips on food that you may not find to quite this extent in other books. It offers good tips for eating healthy, and for excersizing.
It does recommend a low GI diet, which is the best diet for PCOS, and talkes exstensively about insulin resistance as well- a great key word for those with PCOS. The book is more like a manual of course, it's a "dummies" series, so it lacks a lot of warmth. It does have some interesting recipes, but like the last review- many of them do contain items you can buy in the US and does seem to be European based.

Product Description

Review of Nutrition for Women, Second Edition: How Eating Right Can Help You Look and Feel Your Best (Paperback)

I'd been a pizza-and-macaroni-vegetarian from age 16 to 21, then I went back to meat because I was so bored, I suppose.I discovered cooking a couple years later, and was experimenting with thai, meditteranean, and french food by 25.I baked bread, I bought brie, I tried new things. Then I had my nutrition revelation, and I've been learning ever since.

About 5 years ago, I was interested in homeopathic medicine--"it's like astrology for your body!" I said to anyone who would listen to me ramble. But then I started to think more practically--I'm not going to spend hundreds of dollars on homeopathic remedies for my every ailment and neurosis.I'm already eating food. What should I really be eating to give me every chance to be healthy?

This is the book I picked up.Following its recommendations, I tested my vitals--cholesterol, blood pressure, etc.I was just fine, really great, in fact--my total cholesterol was 171 and my HDL was much higher than my LDL.But I soldiered on, figuring that was because I was young (I was 28).

One thing I remember specifically is that I took Somer's advice and wrote down those of her recommendations I was planning to fulfill.I took a look at that list a little while ago, and I did most things (except eating two to three cups of dairy a day, about which, at the time I said, "I'll try, but I doubt it!").For example, I'm eating at least 6 servings of fruits and vegetables a day--at the time, I seriously thought it would be impossible.I vowed to eat half of my grains as whole grains--now I rarely eat refined white flour or rice at all, and certainly never cook them at home. There were several others, and I've incorporated them into my daily life since then, and I have to say, I'm proud.

I had my numbers checked for the first time since then just this week.My cholesterol has gone down *40 points* from 171 to 131 in five years. My HDL to LDL is 1.7 (drs figure it differently--my LDL to HDL is .5, and my Total C to HDL is 1.7).My cholesterol counselor called me a show-off and told me at least four times to keep eating exactly the way I was eating.

Dr. Somer, thank you so much.I had no idea how to be healthy--now I have no idea how to enjoy junk.I've been overhauled.

(I'm resolved now to get some more dairy in my diet!)

Review of Strong, Slim, and 30: Eat Right, Stay Young, Feel Great, and Look Fabulous! (Hardcover)

One thing that I must say about this book is that you have to really be ready to change your diet in order to truly see the benefits. With that being said, once you are ready to commit to it, you will without a doubt reap the benefits of this plan. I was amazed by how easy it was to follow. I loved how she dumbed it down for me and just gave me options to choose for my breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks from a list as opposed to count calories or carbs or anything else for that matter. I've only been doing it for a few weeks, but I have more energy when I workout, I sleep better, and I've seen enough positive results in such a shorttime to keep me faithful to the plan. One of the things that surprised me the most was how it curbed my cravings for fast food and the other things that have sabotaged my efforts in the past. If you're truly ready for something to change your diet and your way of life, I highly recommend this book.
