Review of The Edgar Cayce Remedies (Paperback)

This is a good book. I like that it not only describes Edgar Cayce's trance suggestions and philosophy of healing but that it is written by Dr. William McGarey who used to be one of the founding doctors of the medical clinic in Phoenix, Arizona that used the Cayce readings when appropriate to cure many illnesses, even those considered incurable.

However, because of the title of the book, I expected it to be a listing of various Cayce remedies such as herbs, lotions, foods. Instead, it lists remedies to undertake for various types of ailments. It's written in three parts. The first describes the functioning of the human body. The second sections lists various types of healing regimens suggested in the Cayce readings such as castor oil packs, prayer and meditation, and consulting dreams plus more conventional types of healing regimens such as diet and nutrition, exercise, manipulation, and massage. The third section is the best because it lists various body systems such as the digestive organs, the skin, and the heart and vascular system, and describes how to get that system healthy and keep it healthy.

I find it very helpful to get a sense of how the body works from Cayce's very holistic perspective. However, I would have preferred that when Cayce readings are mentioned, that they be quoted and the numbers of the readings listed as they are in The Edgar Cayce Handbook for Health Through Drugless Therapy.

If you are interested in listings of various healing regimens, there's Edgar Cayce Encyclopedia of Healing (Edgar Cayce) that lists various ailments and their cures and An Edgar Cayce Encyclopedia of Foods for Health and Healing, which lists foods and food combinations suggested to heal various physical incoordinations, plus Edgar Cayce on Healing Foods for Body, Mind, and Soul, another books on the foods and food combinations recommended in the Cayce readings.

A good book but I'd choose The Edgar Cayce Handbook for Health Through Drugless Therapy first because it is a "how to" of the Cayce remedies and it quotes the readings directly including their reading numbers.

Review of Nutrition Counseling in the Treatment of Eating Disorders (Hardcover)

As a student of nutrition/dietetics and as a girl who has had anorexia & bulimia for about 5 years, I found this text to be insightful, motivational, and practical. It helped me see how all the nutrition info and diet guidelines I have learned as a student REALLY DO apply to ME, even though I have an eating disorder. Thinking about diet therapy, eating patterns, and other food-related behaviors from a clinical perspective has helped me step outside myself and get a clearer view of my own behaviors. The book has helped me trust my body more and be more willing to experiment with dietary changes.

This book really emphasizes the fact that Registered Dietitians treating eating disordered patients cannot double as psychotherapists but must have a strong background in psychology to be successful. Food and eating is so central to our being. All nutritionists need to be aware of the psychological reasonings behind food behaviors (especially with eating disorders!!!) so that do-able dietary advise can be given.

What I learned from this book will make me a much better RD for all nutritional problems! I think all dietetics students should read this book.

Product Description
Most eating disordered patients believe themselves to be experts on the subject of nutrition, therefore the job of effective patient counseling becomes even more challenging. This book presents both nutritional and physiological information in a thoroughly detailed manner. The compilation of concepts, techniques, and alternatives makes the book unique in style and content. The book addresses the food, weight, and nutrition issues that must be tackled in the treatment of eating disordered individuals and will give professionals the necessary information for effective patient counseling.

Review of Amino Acids and Proteins for the Athlete: The Anabolic Edge, Second Edition (Nutrition in Exercise & Sport) (Hardcover)

This is a terrific book. Yes, it's technical, but if you managed to get through moderately advanced High School science courses, or if you hacked college, don't sweat it, you'll get it. Di Pasquale--an M.D.--gives much in-depth, detailed information on the metabolism, physiological effects of, and potential for excercise enhancement of amino acids, proteins, and their effect on body hormones. Di Pasquale knows that the reader wants to apply the information to athletic performance. He talks about both anaerobic and aerobic excercise, but since he is a former powerlifting champion, he zeroes in on anaerobic excercise (e.g., bodybuilding, powerlifting), which is very refreshing. You also get summary detail toward the end of the book that gives sample supplement doses and critical timing of dosing to maximize results. Di Pasquale also weighs in on other non-amino acid supplements that affect anabolism (or purport to) such as Pyruvate, HMB, etc. (There's no info on steroids, so forget about that.) Overall a terrific advance for bodybuilders and worth it if you want to get away from all the hype and zero in on some science. This book is for the thinking bodybuider. Naturals, in particular, have much to gain.

Product Description
Advance Athletic Achievement Naturally
Extensively updated with all chapters rewritten and double the information and references, Amino Acids and Proteins for the Athlete: The Anabolic Edge, Second Edition reflects the nearly exponential increase in data and knowledge in the past few years regarding the use of amino acids and proteins to enhance athletic performance.
This groundbreaking book is written by physician Mauro Di Pasquale, two-time Pan American, two-time North American, and eight-time Canadian Powerlifting Champion. Dr. Di Pasquale served as an advisor to the World Wrestling and World Bodybuilding Federations, has written for numerous health and bodybuilding publications, and has published several books and newsletters on sports-related issues. In this volume, he imparts his scientific knowledge as well as lessons learned from his own athletic achievement to give professional and recreational athletes the tools they need to improve performance using nutrition and nutritional supplements as alternatives to drug use.
The book begins with a brief review of energy and protein metabolism before describing the positive impact of supplementation on athletic performance, health, disease, and longevity. It reveals the actions of protein and amino acid supplements on muscle size and strength and energy metabolism as well as the role of specific amino acid supplements.
The second part of the book, the practical how-to section, Naturally Anabolic, advises the athlete on ways to achieve maximum progress while avoiding the use of anabolic drugs. It provides the inside scoop on how to use nutrition to manipulate anabolic hormones naturally, and how to lose body fat without sacrificing muscle. The final chapter reveals the secrets of powerful nutritional supplements that can enhance an athlete's performance. By following Dr. Di Pasquale's time-tested advice, athletes will get the inside edge over the competition and take their achievement to the next level.

Review of Dr. Atkins' Health Revolution: How Complementary Medicine can Extend Your Life (Paperback)

I wasn't looking for a cure for my sleep disorder, monthly cramps, headaches and occasional UTIs when I picked up Dr. Atkins'Health Revolution three years back; I was just doing a little preliminary research on the Atkins Diet to see if this guy was some kind of quack, as his detractors often claimed.Lo and behold, a new world of health and physically based well-being opened to me as I began to understand just how my nutritional habits (and lack thereof) were undermining the quality of my life.
A common myth about Dr. Atkins that could stand some clearing up is that he advocates a strict homeopathic system of medical care and an unbalanced meat-only diet. These misconceptions can be corrected by reading the first few chapters.Atkins actually gives well-reasoned explanations of his philosophy of Complementary medicine, an approach that stresses prevention via good dietary habits, vitamin supplements and exercise, then homeopathic and vitamin remedies when there is a problem, and finally traditional medicine when all else fails (Yeah, he's a quack all right!).Without going into the details and logistics here, I was impressed with how logical and simple to apply this system is.
Where Atkins' detractors have hung up on most is the section on diet and how our last 150 years or so of history have affected it.From our pre-industrial food options though the Twentieth Century's sudden proliferation of processed flour and sugar, we can trace the steady rise of heart disease, obesity, tooth decay and Type 2 diabetes.Worse, the industries that stood to profit from the "deadly duo" (and other starchy carb-based foods that were taking the place of meats, eggs, butter and cheese as the bulk of our diets) greatly influenced the medical profession's research and findings. The resulting decline of our national health is a bitter legacy to take responsibility for, and that is just what too many of our processed food makers, doctors, pharmaceutical companies and health experts would have to do once they conceded that Atkins may indeed have been right. For that reason, such an admission may be decades in coming.
Whether or not you find yourself agreeing with that area of Atkins' theory, the book presents sound arguments and encourages a lifestyle that has improved untold lives over the past 30 years. There are changes you can make that will lower your blood pressure, bad cholesterol and triglycerides, eliminate systemic yeast infections, reverse diabetes and re-energize you - all without the use of drugs. In fact, you will probably end up being able to ditch the drugs you are on now.
I believe that someday Dr. Atkins vitamin and diet principles will be the standard recommendations from the health industry. It is hard to argue with the steadily growing segment of our population that simply gets lasting results by using them, and expands slowly via word of mouth.Meanwhile, those happy few of us will continue to benefit from the work done by this incredible man and his steadfast campaigning on our behalf before a tragic head wound took his life a few months ago.
Rest in peace, Doctor.
-Andrea, aka Merribelle.
