Review of Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphors (Hardcover)

I purchased this book several years ago, when I first entered private practice as a hypnotherapist. Nine years later, I still refer to it frequently. As a previous reviewer commented, many of the scripts can beused verbatim; however, I use them mostly as guides and personalize them tothe client. It's a must-have book for every hypnotherapist's library.

Product Description
Designed as a practical desktop reference, this book is the largest collection of hypnotic suggestions and metaphors ever compiled.

Review of Healing Anxiety and Depression (Paperback)

Many books are one-sided arguments for the causes of depression and anxiety. According to these biased books, depressions stems from:
Past child abuse and other negative environment factors
Holding your body in a depressing way - bent down, frowning, etc.
Medical causes
Poor diet, lack of exercise
Isolation
Fill in the blank
But this book is different.
Healing Anxiety and Depression is a refreshing book, for it takes all of the above factors and mixes it into a complete approach to the causes and treatment of anxiety and depression.
Moreover, Daniel Amen, M.D. and his co-author, Lisa C. Routh, M.D. have pioneered the use of a brain imaging technology known as SPECT: Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography. This interesting brain scanning method is different than other methods because it allows one to see how certain parts of the brain interact to cause these debilitating conditions. Other
methods of brain imaging only give a surface view of the brain - which is of very little use for psychiatry.
The authors also touch upon how these areas of the brain cause insomnia, suicide and violence as well. They also point out the different causes of anxiety and depression between the genders. They convincingly describe gender differences from social, psychological, and biological perspectives.
In short: they give you the full picture on depression from every possible angle - literally. In between the pages, interspersed among case histories, personal stories, and scientific explanations, you will find actual pictures of the five areas of the brain they have focused on via SPECT technology:
1.)Basal Ganglia
2.)Deep Limbic System
3.)Anterior Cingulate Gyrus
4.)Temporal Lobes
5.)Prefrontal Cortex
Furthermore, the authors have taken these five areas of the brain, and through thousands of their own patients, compiled their findings on how these five areas interact to cause seven variations of depression and anxiety:
1.)Pure Anxiety
2.)Pure Depression
3.)Mixed Anxiety and Depression
4.)Overfocused Anxiety/Depression
5.)Cyclic Anxiety/Depression
6.)Angry Anxiety/Depression
7.)Unfocused Anxiety/Depression
There's only one drawback to this book: the technical terms can be a bit annoying. I constantly flipped back to beginning chapters to refresh my memory on what they were talking about. The medications and dosages - and their variations, are mind-boggling. Ask your doctor about them.
Despite this, the book is worth the extra memory and concentration required to comprehend it.
It's very empowering too: Dr. Amen is a strong advocate for natural supplements, exercise, and deep diaphragmatic breathing. He also gives the reader a simple, flexible, easy-to-follow diet that'll maximize your brain function. More wisely, however, he directs you towards a way of eating that's based not on a one-size-fits-all mentality, but a diet that is focused on your
particular type of anxiety and/or depression.
He also has his own version of cognitive therapy: ANTS (Automatic Negative Thoughts) and ANTeaters, developed by Amen as a child psychiatrist to help make the ideas a bit more concrete for children. Amen's short chapter on the power of thoughts can help you take more responsibility for your own
thinking.
Closing with "32 Strategies to Overcome Anxiety and Depression," along with a chart summarizing "diagnostic and treatment principles," this book will give you the real knowledge you need to manage your life on a whole new level.

Review of The Art & Science of Rational Eating (Paperback)

The message of this book is that most human beings are genetically predetermined to be fat by the current standards of society( there is a lot of truth to this). You can try to lose weight, but you will most likely fail to keep it off, so you are better off not trying to lose weight and accepting yourself as you are.Should you be foolish enough to try, the authors offer some diet tips mixed in with REBT (cognitive therapy) all while reminding you that failure is likely.

The authors only give the reader examples from their weight control therapy groups of people who try to lose weight and fail. The examples that are painted in a positive light are patients who decide that losing weight is not worth the discomfort and who learn to accept being heavy.People who try to be fit are painted as being shallow and wasting their time on a triviality.

The authors claim to know a lot about nutrition, dieting and fitness.Yet, they recommend going on extremely low calorie diets because they think seeing fast results will keep people motivated. It is believed that crash diets are responsible for the yo-yo effect they decry and contributes to raising body weight set points. The authors also minimize regular exercise as a fat loss tool, claiming it helps a little, and is good for health, but it doesn't contribute much toserious weight loss. No wonder so many of their patients give up on trying to lose fat and focus on acceptance.

For what it is worth people do lose large amounts of weight and keep that weight off for long periods of time without being uncomfortable.People interested in this should go to the web site for The National Weight Control Registry [...]

The book has an interesting discussion about bigotry and the bigotry against heavy people.

I believe people who read the front cover of this book where "The sensible, sure-fire way to lose unwanted pounds" is printed will be disappointed. The contents of this book do not match the descriptions of it.This book is not a manual for making weight loss work. This book is about calling into question why people try to lose weight and encouraging people not to do so.

If you are interested in learning to use REBT(cognitive therapy) as a tool for learning how to have better eating habits "How To Stick To A Diet" by Windy Dryden is a far better choice.

Product Description
This is the first book to systematically explore the biological psychologicalcauses of eating disorders and how to control them using the principles of rational emotivetherapy (RET) and cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT).
The Art and Science of Rational Eating teaches RET principles of unconditional self-acceptance; how to alwaysaccept and endorse oneself--even when some eating or otherbehaviors are self-defeating.This is the path toward successful self-control and weight control.
Albert Ellis, Ph. D., the originator of RET and CBT, has worked closely with associatesMicheal Abrams, Ph. D., and Lidia Dengelegi, Ph. D., to develop this unusual self-help bookdevoted especially to eating disorders. It is a needed self-help book for those suffering frombulimia and anorexia.

Review of Nutrition Counseling in the Treatment of Eating Disorders (Hardcover)

As a student of nutrition/dietetics and as a girl who has had anorexia & bulimia for about 5 years, I found this text to be insightful, motivational, and practical. It helped me see how all the nutrition info and diet guidelines I have learned as a student REALLY DO apply to ME, even though I have an eating disorder. Thinking about diet therapy, eating patterns, and other food-related behaviors from a clinical perspective has helped me step outside myself and get a clearer view of my own behaviors. The book has helped me trust my body more and be more willing to experiment with dietary changes.

This book really emphasizes the fact that Registered Dietitians treating eating disordered patients cannot double as psychotherapists but must have a strong background in psychology to be successful. Food and eating is so central to our being. All nutritionists need to be aware of the psychological reasonings behind food behaviors (especially with eating disorders!!!) so that do-able dietary advise can be given.

What I learned from this book will make me a much better RD for all nutritional problems! I think all dietetics students should read this book.

Product Description
Most eating disordered patients believe themselves to be experts on the subject of nutrition, therefore the job of effective patient counseling becomes even more challenging. This book presents both nutritional and physiological information in a thoroughly detailed manner. The compilation of concepts, techniques, and alternatives makes the book unique in style and content. The book addresses the food, weight, and nutrition issues that must be tackled in the treatment of eating disordered individuals and will give professionals the necessary information for effective patient counseling.

Review of Depression-Free for Life: A Physician's All-Natural, 5-Step Plan (Paperback)

In this book, Gabriel Cousens discusses his five-step program for treating depression -- without Prozac.
The book starts by defining depression and discussing the major types (such as major depression, manic depression, andsome others), talks about how anti-depressant drugs such as prozac &MAO inhibitors work, then launches into Gabriel Cousens' five-stepapproach.
The fivefold approach is basically: <1> amino acidprecursors are used to build up the brain chemistry, then <2> he addsvitamin/mineral supplements, <3> essential fatty acids, <4>dietary advice, and <5> lifestyle factors (touch, support, spiritualconnection, counseling, etc.)By far, the main emphasis on the book isabout the biochemistry of depression, as the last section on the lifestylefactors (<5>) is very brief in relation to the rest of theinformation in the book.
Along the way, there are checkpoints (thateasily stand out, for reference) which you will need to determine whichsupplements will likely be the most effective for your style ofdepression.
Some of the stuff in this book is truly new material.Theinformation on optimizing the diet for your specific metabolism (slow orfast oxidizer) is new, and since blood sugar is a major component inovercomming depression, it is very welcome. This is the most mainstream ofGabriel's books, so he does not spend any time going over the benefits ofraw foods, and though he does suggest a mostly vegetarian diet, he does notstress it very heavily here.Nevertheless, the diet section has lots ofvegan raw-food recipes that are used at the Tree of Life RejuvenationCenter, for those who are interested in that lifestyle.
I understoodafter reading this book why I feel much less depressed during the day whenI have sunflower seed meal for breakfast - it has to do with my fastoxidation metabolism combined with the seratonin boosting properties ofsunflower seeds.(I discovered that I felt better eating sunflower seedsbefore I read the book, so it was a pleasure to read the book to discoverwhy that meal is so effective for me.)

Review of The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook, Fourth Edition (Paperback)

If you or someone you know suffers from a panic disorder, anxiety, OCD, or phobias (especially agoraphobia and social phobias), you must read this book. It is THE best source of information and practical help I have ever seen on the subject.
The book contains a wide array of topics: causes of anxiety, coping with attacks, pharmaceutical treatments, holistic treatments, psychological approaches, nutrition, relaxation, where to find support, how to give support... the book would be worth triple its price just for the richness of information Dr. Bourne has compiled.
Add to that the excellent workbook exercises and techniques, and you have a truly indispensable resource.
I was very pleased with the presentation of the material. This book is not overflowing with warm and fuzzy, touchy-feely reassurances like many "self-help" books. Instead, it has proven, practical, self-paced techniques and exercises which you can use in your daily life, presented in a clear and easy-to-digest format. It's not a dry textbook, and it's not a bit of pop-psychology fluff -- this is a powerful tool for anyone whose quality of life has diminished because of anxiety and fear.
Good luck!
