Review of Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild (and Not So Wild) Places (Paperback)

On the whole, this book is interesting and informative, but I was slightly disappointed with the logical layout. The information in the book is fairly detailed and interesting, but is presented in a narrative manner. The book takes a season/habitat based approach... I guess I was expecting a more trait-based heirarchical listing system. Something that would facilitate taking an unknown plant and quickly looking up the answers to "what is it? is it edible? is it medicinal? if so, what are the details"
The approach also tends to give details on a few interesting / especially good flavored or nutricious plants and then gives a names-only grocery list of "Edible and medicinal plants" and then one of "For Observation only"
So, in summary, if you know a bit about general plant identification and your focus is on what's available for the season and habitat, this book is a valuable resource, but if you're looking for a field identification and classification tool, this is probably not the best choice.

Product Description

Identifying and Harvesting Edible and Medicinal Plants in Wild (and Not So Wild) Places shows readers how to find and prepare more than five hundred different plants for nutrition and better health, including such common plants as mullein (a tea made from the leaves and flowers suppresses a cough), stinging nettle (steam the leaves and you have a tasty dish rich in iron), cattail (cooked stalks taste similar to corn and are rich in protein), and wild apricots (an infusion made with the leaves is good for stomach aches and disgestive disorders).

More than 260 detailed line drawings help readers identify a wide range of plants -- many of which are suited for cooking by following the more than thirty recipes included in this book. There are literally hundreds of plants readily available underfoot waiting to be harvested and used either as food or as a potential therapeutic. This book is both a field guide to nature's bounty and a source of intriguing information about the plants that surround us.

Review of Lunch Lessons: Changing the Way We Feed Our Children (Paperback)

The photograph on the cover of this book is a bit misleading. The topic of "Lunch Lessons" has a lot more to do with improving American school hot lunch programs than it is about packing healthy brown bag lunches for your own child. It does include a list of recipes at the back of the book. Many sound great, like the "Three Cheese-Vegetable Strata" and the "High Protein Squares" (a homemade replacement for power bars). They also look very time-consuming.Although I haven't tried any of the recipes, it seems to me that making your own pizza dough for the "Pizza Wheels" might take a bit longer than anyone wants to spend making lunch. Actually, I think the recipes are really in here to inspire the people who make hot lunches in school cafeterias.

Like other reviewers I am interested improving school nutrition policies.I head a health committee at my daughter's school dedicated to improving nutrition and fitness for the students and their families. As such this book should be a perfect fit. Unfortunately for me, my daughter attends a private school and almost all of the information in this book, including the reference list in the back, is only helpful if your child attends a public school. (I've actually found more useful information on government web sites than I have in this book!)That doesn't mean it's been completly useless. There are a few great tidbits to be found here and there.I found the recommendation about "laptop lunches" really great.I don't think I would have found out about the company and their fabulous lunch boxes had it not been for this book. (The cover photograph shows a "laptop" lunchbox.)

In the end I think I would recommend this book to anyone interested in taking on the enormous problem of unhealthy school lunches in public schools. If you're looking for new ideas for your child's lunchbox there are probobly better books out there. If like me you're trying to improve the health policies at a private school there probably won't be many ideas in "Lunch Lessons" that you can use exactly as described.

Review of Making Peace With Food: Freeing Yourself from the Diet/Weight Obsession (Paperback)

After years of learning negative behaviors around food, and years of an unhealthy relationship with food, I found a book that challenged my ideas about food and weight. I read a review on this book that mentioned how upset they were about this book telling you that it is ok to gain weight. Well, what this book really says is that we all come in different shapes and sizes and that is ok. Maybe it is not healthy to be the weight that we desire? I loved this book because it helped me to learn that food is no longer my God or my enemy. It taught me that it is ok to eat.

Review of Depression-Free for Life: A Physician's All-Natural, 5-Step Plan (Paperback)

In this book, Gabriel Cousens discusses his five-step program for treating depression -- without Prozac.
The book starts by defining depression and discussing the major types (such as major depression, manic depression, andsome others), talks about how anti-depressant drugs such as prozac &MAO inhibitors work, then launches into Gabriel Cousens' five-stepapproach.
The fivefold approach is basically: <1> amino acidprecursors are used to build up the brain chemistry, then <2> he addsvitamin/mineral supplements, <3> essential fatty acids, <4>dietary advice, and <5> lifestyle factors (touch, support, spiritualconnection, counseling, etc.)By far, the main emphasis on the book isabout the biochemistry of depression, as the last section on the lifestylefactors (<5>) is very brief in relation to the rest of theinformation in the book.
Along the way, there are checkpoints (thateasily stand out, for reference) which you will need to determine whichsupplements will likely be the most effective for your style ofdepression.
Some of the stuff in this book is truly new material.Theinformation on optimizing the diet for your specific metabolism (slow orfast oxidizer) is new, and since blood sugar is a major component inovercomming depression, it is very welcome. This is the most mainstream ofGabriel's books, so he does not spend any time going over the benefits ofraw foods, and though he does suggest a mostly vegetarian diet, he does notstress it very heavily here.Nevertheless, the diet section has lots ofvegan raw-food recipes that are used at the Tree of Life RejuvenationCenter, for those who are interested in that lifestyle.
I understoodafter reading this book why I feel much less depressed during the day whenI have sunflower seed meal for breakfast - it has to do with my fastoxidation metabolism combined with the seratonin boosting properties ofsunflower seeds.(I discovered that I felt better eating sunflower seedsbefore I read the book, so it was a pleasure to read the book to discoverwhy that meal is so effective for me.)

Review of Eating Well For Optimum Health: The Essential Guide to Bringing Health and Pleasure Back to Eating (Paperback)

I usually have to force myself to read nutritional type books, but I foundthis book to be quite different. The approach taken by the author is a veryrational one, and it makes a lot of sense over the course of a lifetime. There are no short term diet or health solutions presented, but rather thefocus is on healthy, enjoyable eating as a way of life. The author stronglyemphasizes that healthy eating does not need to be a miserable experience;but that it can and should be pleasurable. A wealth of information aboutfood is provided in the book, including the best and worst diets in theworld. In several chapters the components of food and nutrition are brokendown and explained. There is a section of the book that contains 85recipes, and another section that answers specific questions about food andnutrition. Much of the information given is scientific in nature, but Ifound all of the chapters to be very informative and interesting. I greatlyappreciated the sense of compassion and humor that Dr. Weil brings to hisbook. This is a very well written book, and I recommend it to everyone.

Review of The Jungle Effect: Healthiest Diets from Around the World--Why They Work and How to Make Them Work for You (Paperback)

It's a travelogue, a nutrition advice book (complete with case studies),and a cookbook, too. Writing in the first person, Daphne Miller brings these threebooks together into one fun read. She's adventurous and curious, which makes a book about preventing diabetes, cancer and depression into a delight. Who'd have thought!

Several ideas come together here: "Cold spots" are places in which chronic Western diseases are noticeably absent. Miller explores what and how people eat in the cold spots. Then she cites the research showing why a particular indigenous diet provides protection against a particular condition. She was led to the cold spots in her efforts to help individual patients who were struggling with health issues--and whose ethnic heritage is tied to the cold spot. That's another piece of the puzzle: in this fast-food world, it's not easy to maintain the ideal diet as usually presented: fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and varying advice on carbs. " But a Mexican "cold spot" diet might be easier for a Chicana patient to stick with. The foods might appeal to cultural memory, or even an individual's memories of grandmother's cooking. Sure enough, it turns out that way, as Miller returns from cold spots with traditional recipes to share with her patients. For example, a Scandinavian patient, who turns up her nose at ubiquitous California salads, turns out to love the Icelandic diet with plenty of berries, fish, and waxy potatoes. And eating the Icelandic way helps her out of a serious depression. Miller explains how it works.

The book invites usto eat our way around the world and learn the principles of each indigenous diet. We can sample from Camaroon, Crete,Okinawa and more. The recipes look good--I haven't tried them yet-- and are written to incorporate ingredients easily available in most US towns. Miller finds out about the recipes by peeking into kitchens and cooking with locals, who are colorfully portrayed. I found inspiration for healthy eating in this book, and learned a lot aboutthe mechanisms behind the adage "we are what we eat."

I should tell you thatDr Miller is our family doctor. She's just as devoted to her patients as it seems in the book. And her constant scan of medical and nutrition research has helped our whole family. While I haven't made any of the recipes yet, I recognize changes we have already made based on her advice.

Review of Marilu Henner's Total Health Makeover (Paperback)

The first time I read this book and was introduced to the concept of food combining, it sounded unrealistic and impossible to follow. I tried it for about 2 days and gave up. About a year later, when diagnosed with aninternal Candida imbalance that was causing lots of chronic healthproblems, my doctor suggested I follow a special diet that included foodcombining. So I got out Marilu's book and read through it again. This timeI stuck with it and found that much of her nutritional suggestions mirroredthat of anti-Candida plans; i.e., no dairy, food combining, no sugar orartificial sweeteners, etc.I was a fairly healthy eater to begin with butof course a major change in diet takes determination and time to adjust.Let me assure anyone out there that this book is full of good informationto start you on a path to total wellness, inside and out. While some ofthe presentation is a tiny bit corny, it's also approachable and it'sinteresting to see the road she, herself, was on in terms of bad health andwhere she is now.
Since making the decision to stick permanently withfood combining (which can be complicated but she presents in a very easy tofollow, organzied way) and eliminating sugar (about as hard for some peopleto do as quitting smoking or drinking) I have never felt better. My Candidais under control, my chronic ailments (asthma, allergies, rashes, jointpain) have all but disappeared, I have tons of energy all the time, I sleepbetter, I look better (better skin, hair, body) I feel consistently in agood mood and a nice side benefit was dropping from a size 12 to a 6.
After nearly a decade of struggling with my weight and being"sickly" I am now strong and truly healthy and found that onlywhen I focused on my health rather than my size did I lose weight. I am nowgoing back to college to obtain a degree in Kinesiology specializing inAthletic Training, a lifelong dream I never would have thought I couldpursue in my prior condition. You need to be inspirational to train othersand certainly you have to walk the talk.
With all the other fads beingtauted out there, like the Atkins diet which is completely nutritionallyunsound and puts people at a risk for renal failure and seriousdehydration, I can tell you that the reason plans like Marilu's aren't aspopular is ause they are more difficult initially to get accustomed to anddon't allow for taboo foods as much as the hi-pro/hi-fat phenomenon. Thismay be a tougher challenge at first, but the long term health benefits arelimitless.
I have read and reread everything from the Zone, Atkins, macrobiotics, sugar-busters and the blood type recommendations (which areactually very similar and is also a great book to keep as a nutritionalbible) and it's Marilu's book I find myself whipping out for reference orreview.
If you buy this book and stick with it for a month (it takes atleast that long to remove prior waste product from your blood stream, tissues and organs) you WILL feel a sense of total health and well beingthat will amaze and surpise you. It's a great investment in yourself andthe better your body functions, the better the quality of your life.

Review of The Volumetrics Eating Plan: Techniques and Recipes for Feeling Full on Fewer Calories (Paperback)

I began following Volumetrics in April, 2001. Four years later, I have lost 220 pounds! The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan gave me everything I needed to overcome obesity: a comprehensive guide to good nutrition; a clear explanation of the science of satiety; and a host of delicious recipes to try. I have been able to stick with Volumetrics all this time because I don't feel hungry or deprived. In fact, I would say that by managing my hunger and helping me achieve a normal weight, Volumetrics has given me my life back.

This new Volumetrics book is a wonderful complement to the first one. It includes more detail on how to implement Volumetrics successfully, along with menu planners and beautiful color photographs of 125 new recipes. I've actually given The Volumetrics Eating Plan to several friends who don't need to lose weight but do like to cook. I only wish it had been available when I started my own Volumetrics eating plan four years ago (and I'm not just saying that because my testimonial appears on page 5!)

The reviewers who gave the book one and two stars, respectively, don't seem to understand the program. One reviewer complains that the book is "bad science based on a fear of dietary fat calories." In fact, Volumetrics recommends that 20-30% of daily calories come from fat. That's well within accepted guidelines, and ensures both good nutrition and good taste. I eat butter, eggs and cheese (in moderation), and I've lost weight steadily while feeling satisfied on Volumetrics.

A second reviewer complains that Volumetrics is the same as 99.99% of the diet books out there. I strongly disagree. I tried numerous diets over several decades and never understood the connection between energy density and satiety until Volumetrics explained it to me. Finding out that I could lose weight without being chronically hungry was a revelation!

I recommend Volumetrics to anyone struggling with obesity. (...)

Review of Your Miracle Brain: Maximize Your Brainpower, Boost Your Memory, Lift Your Mood, Improve Your IQ and Creativity, Prevent and Reverse Mental Aging (Paperback)

This is the third Jean Carper book I have read, and I was delighted to find so much new information to help postpone the effects aging.Like most of us, I have always assumed the conventional belief that the aging brain simply deteriorates. This is not true. Not only does Ms. Carper's newbook examine the latest scientific evidence showing how simplistic thatnotion is, but she goes on to identify many of the practical things each ofus can do to develop new health habits that will improve our mentalfunctions."Your Miracle Brain" will certainly be a best seller, but moreimportantly, it will transform the way our minds think about our brains.

Review of A Week in the Zone: A Quick Course in the Healthiest Diet for You (Paperback)

Finally, Barry Sears has gotten around to writing a "how-to" book on the Zone Diet. All of the previous books were somewhat technical, and aimed at medical professionals or personal trainers.
This book, hisfirst paperback, is written in a clear, concise and easy to understandstyle.By the end of the first 20 pages, you will have a good idea of whatthe Zone Diet is about, its benefits and how it works.
Then, the rest ofthe book gives Sears' simplest yet version of the diet (for example, instead of "40-30-30" the new restatement uses"1-2-3").
The Zone Diet, by the way, is primarily a healthdiet, although it is also effective for weight loss. The idea is to keepyour blood sugar and hormone levels as even as possible, by balancing whatyou eat in each meal. The result is a number of health benefits, especially in the areas of diabetes (demonstrated by a clinical study) andheart disease (Sears started the research due to the high mortality in hisown family tree), but also in other areas like allergies, joint pain, headaches, stomach acid, and many others, all of which are aggravated byour modern unnatural eating habits.
Unlike almost all other eating plans, this diet is based on an investigation of how food affects our bodies'mechanisms, and the result is simply better functioning.

Product Description

A national bestseller for more than three years in hardcover, The Zone has introduced millions of people worldwide to a breakthrough approach to dieting based on Novel Prize–winning scientific research. Treating food as the most powerful drug available, The Zone plan shows how food, when used unwisely, can be toxic. Used wisely however, it will take anyone into the Zone, a state of exceptional health familiar to champion athletes.

Now the benefits of Barry Sears߲evolutionary program can be experienced in just one week! With A Week in the Zone, everyone can start on the path to permanent weight loss and learn how to burn body fat, and keep it off – without deprivation or hunger.

They'llalso discover how the Zone helps to both increase energy and fight heart disease, diabetes, PMS, chronic fatigue, depression, and cancer.

Review of The RealAge Diet: Make Yourself Younger with What You Eat (Paperback)

The connection between food and health is a strong one. Many diet-obsessed people overly focus on this one element of health though. This book builds from the RealAge research to help you change your eating habits in permanent, healthy ways. The book's weakness is that the recommended solutions require a lot of discipline to get started.
The book's conclusion that these changes will make you physiologically younger may well be a stretch. "To be honest, there's still a lot that scientists don't know about nutrition." That sentence is the most important one in the book. A new diet could be produced every year incorporating the latest research results, and each one would be different. I suspect that this continuing change in perceptions will go on for decades. So I suggest that you not take the results of any one diet book too seriously. Some of the key conclusions of each one will probably be contradicted in the future.
Nevertheless, this book is an attempt to point you toward eating habits that reduce diseases older people get more frequently and extend longevity. On the other hand, this book does not focus on appearance or weight level. Many people who read diet books are more interested in those two areas than longevity. If you are interested in another diet currently, this book probably reviews the other diet and gives you a rating for whether or not that diet will help extend longevity. The book is most positive about Eating Well for Optimum Health and Dean Ornish's Eat More, Weigh Less. The book's advice can be encapsulated as "Eat nutrient rich, calorie poor, and delicious." These foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, fish, and the right fats (eaten in moderation early in the meal). If you are familiar with books about nutrition, you won't find any big "'aha's" here. The main news is that eating fish seems to have benefits separate from eating the fats that are in fish. Now, I find that I feel a lot better if I eat fish 2 or 3 times a week. I suspect that listening to your body is often as reliable as the latest evidence.
Like many of the best books about nutrition and Sugarbusters!, this one warns about paying attention to glycemic levels of foods.
I did find its focus on calorie count to be questionable. The weight set-point for people differs a lot, and some people with slow metabolisms may find this approach just another painful way to be overweight. Calories do count, but picking your target is hard to do well. Spending a lot of time measuring calories will reduce consumption. If you have a high metabolism, the effort may well bring weight-loss rewards worth the effort.
The scientific references in the back of the book are impressive, but are not well connected to the text. You would have to do a lot of reading to find out what the research really says. I would like to have seen a closer connection between the footnotes and the text. Both Eating Well for Optimum Health and Live Right 4 Your Type are better in this area.
A clear conflict exists between this book and Live Right 4 Your Type. Both seem to be equally based on scientific research, except that Live Right 4 Your Type attempts to match the advice for your blood type. This book discusses the earlier book, Eat Right 4 Your Type, which does not closely match to research references. Based on my own experiences with both the average and the blood type adjusted approaches, I think the Live Right 4 Your Type method works better for me than the RealAge Diet.
If you have heart disease, you will have to modify some of those diets to reflect that by reducing fat (see Dean Ornish's Reversing Heart Disease).
If you are well read on nutrition, this book will not add much to your knowledge. If you eat poorly and have not read about nutrition, this is a fine book for you.
I would like to commend the section in the book on eating out. There are many good ideas for how to have your food prepared in healthier ways. Even if you know nutrition, you may find the book to be a valuable asset for this reason if you are passive in restaurants.
The book also advises doing a lot of your own cooking. That's not for me. The recipes looked too hard to me to be worth looking into. You may have a different reaction. If you do, enjoy!
After you read this book, you should also think about how much effort it is worth to extend your lifespan. If you spend 10 percent of your waking hours to expand your life by five percent, is that an accomplishment? Depending on how you spend your time, it may or may not be. For example, if you live enough longer than a cure comes along that extends your life by another 10 percent, you're ahead. If you enjoy working on this, you are ahead also. If you have more energy to give to others, you may be ahead also.
Also, you might want to check out Dean Ornish's Love and Survival where he points out that human relationships have more impact on disease and health than diet.
Make food a positive part of your life!

Review of The 20/30 Fat & Fiber Diet Plan: The Weight-Reducing, Health-Promoting Nutrition System for Life (Harper Resource Book) (Paperback)

Fat people know how awful it is when you want to lose weight, but feel like you don't have enough willpower to diet or excercise. I spent a long time in that condition.
When I came across this book, I decided to tryjust a little bit at a time. I thought I'd try just one day on the programper week, and see how it went. Well! I've never gone back. I have stuckwith it every day since then, which is pretty easy, thanks to the 2"eat whatever you want" meals per week.
The 20/30 eating planis easy, tasty, and even fun for me. I never feel hungry, and there arelots of good foods to eat. My doctor says this is a very healthy way toeat.
It's great news that I have lost weight on this plan. But the betternews is that I love the way I feel, and I actually LIKE eating this way. Somuch so that I plan to continue with the 20/30 plan even after I reach mygoal weight. This is a plan I can happily follow for life.
I am notusually evangelistic about anything to do with diet. But this is a book Iwill buy for all my closest friends, because I want them to be as healthyas I feel right now.
I've even started a discussion/support group forpeople who are new to 20/30 - and if you knew me, you'd realize that doingthis kind of stuff is completely out of character for me. But give me asoapbox, and I'll tell anybody that this plan has made a major differencein my life.
I'm just a regular person, and I have nothing to gain if youbuy this book. But it is the one book I would recommend to _everybody_ Theplan is sensible, the recipes are great, and this works.
Good luck!

Review of The Raw Food Detox Diet: The Five-Step Plan for Vibrant Health and Maximum Weight Loss (Paperback)

I've been raw for over a year.I WISH I HAD READ THIS BOOK FIRST!The first book I read was Carol Alt's "Eating in the Raw" - after I read it, I decided to switch overnight... and I made myself really sick. But I stuck with it and eventually felt better. But even after a year of eating what I though was all the right stuff, I still didn't feel as good as I wanted. Now I understand - it was the wrong combinations, like a piece of fruit for dessert after dinner or the almond butter & banana sandwich on sprout bread.I was mixing food groups incorrectly, but I didn't realize it.

The author says in this book that you might feel results as soon as the first evening - IT'S TRUE!The first day I started out with a batch of Green Lemonade, and followed the meal plan all day; I even had dark chocolate for dessert (something I considered off-limits since I switched to raw). That evening was the first time in as long as I can remember that I didn't feel exhausted. It was actually the best I've ever felt!

Be warned, though, that some stuff in this book is a little out there - I definitely don't plan on giving myself any enemas! yuck! - but just following the menu plans really can make a big difference in how good you feel, even by the end of the first day!

I definitely recommend reading this book FIRST if you want to get into the raw food lifestyle, then read some of the others. START HERE.I don't think you'll regret it.There's no need to go through the horrible detox I went through - and all because I didn't understand the importance of transitioning. Some of the reviewers were upset because this book is not 100% raw... well, it doesn't have to be!If you're just starting on something like this, you shouldn't jump in too fast.Go slowly through the transition levels that Natalia Rose describes.Enjoy this book and good luck reaching your goals.

UPDATE:
Natalia Rose has written a new book, "Raw Food Life Force Energy," which I just read. You might consider buying the new book, because it has much of the same information as the original book (this one) along with enhanced explanations, a description of food vibrations, a 21-day step-by-step plan, and a Q&A section. Some of my questions from the first book are actually answered in the second.

Review of The New 8-Week Cholesterol Cure: The Ultimate Program for Preventing Heart Disease (Paperback)

This book deserves many more than five stars!Millions of people will lead longer, healthier, and more productive lives from following the advice here.
In the last 15 years, knowledge about how to reduce heart disease has made major strides. This book is the best source I have seen about what has been learned, and how to apply it to help yourself and those you love. You will probably find it helpful to bring your copy along to see your physician because many primary care physicians will not be up-to-date with the latest findings in some areas, such as the use of supplements.
If you liked Mr. Kowalski's first program for controlling cholesterol, originally published in 1987, you will adore this book. When asking himself what had changed he noted, "Why, practically everything is new!" Mr. Kowalski reviews in detail the strengths and weaknesses of that program, describes the research that has been conducted on cardiovascular health since then, and shows you other risks in addition to cholesterol that must be addressed. He also debunks pseudo-science about cholesterol control.
What impressed me the most is that Mr. Kowalski's old and new programs have worked perfectly for him. Here is a man who had his first heart attack at age 35 and double bypass. He had a second heart attack at 41, followed by a quadruple bypass. In the foreword, cardiac surgeon Dr. Jack Sternlieb describes how the most rigorous tests of Mr. Kowalski's heart and arteries show that it has no blockages as of 1999.Without this program, Mr. Kowalski would probably have needed another bypass operation several years ago.His family record of heart disease is not a good one, and he probably has a genetic tendency to problems in this area.Mr. Kowalski is very physically active now, and has no limitations on his life style due to his cardiac history.
The new program has familiar elements in it, but is considerably less restrictive than the old one.You can eat a lot more foods, and a lot more fat (as long as it is the right kind of fat). The dietary guidelines are quite similar to the new ones brought out by the American Heart Association in 2000.
For most people, the diet features avoiding saturated fat and trans fatty acids, limiting overall fat to hold weight at a healthy level for your height, eating fish at least twice a week (especially fatty fish), lots of fruits and vegetables, whole-grain breads and cereals, consuming soluble fiber, lots of fluids, limiting sugars and empty carbohydrates, and eating slowly.Exercise is 15 miles of walking a week.A variety of supplements are encouraged (especially antioxidents, B vitamins, minerals, polysterols, and pantathine).Don't smoke.Limit alcohol consumption to moderate daily levels, but do not imbibe solely for the cardiovascular benefit.Take one aspirin a day if your stomach can handle it.
I liked the candor in the book quite a lot.For example, "I'm a little embarrassed when I look at the subtitle of the original book, which promises `no deprivation.'"
In addition to the overall recommendations, each element is described in detail including the scientific studies that support why it works, who should not follow the recommendation, how to work with your doctor for the best results, side effects that can occur, and how these recommendations compare with the various prescription medications now available for lowering cholesterol. He also describes how these recommendations affect other factors for cardiovascular risk such as the amount of low-density lipoprotein (a negative component of overall cholesterol), high-density lipoprotein (a positive component of overall cholesterol), triglycerides, homocysteine, and C-reactive proteins. The section on niacin (B-3) was particularly interesting since it involves changing liver functions, and you are encouraged to work with your doctor in this area.I was not familiar with the "niacin flush" but was glad to learn that the newer versions usually avoid that problem.I especially found the discussions of the special issues that women, young people, and seniors have to be helpful.

Review of Carbohydrate-Addicted Kids: Help Your Child or Teen Break Free of Junk Food and Sugar Cravings--for Life! (Paperback)

The book is excellent. I have read all of the Heller's books and I think this one is one of their best. It makes so much sense and really offers a lot of suggestions on how to help our children change their eating habits,as well as helping our kids achieve weight loss. It also addresses severalbehavioral issues as possibly being food related and offers suggestions forcorrecting these behaviors through food. I have been introducing new foodsto even my 3 year old daughter like they recommend, and she has respondedpositively. It really does work. I would highly recommend this book toANYONE with kids, and a great read for adults too.

Product Description

Something's Eating Your Child. It Could Be Junk Food.
Does your kid grab food on the run? Does it seem as if your youngster could live on pizza and fries while guzzling juice and soda? Your child or teen may be carbohydrate addicted and suffer from a chemical imbalance that can lead to weight gain, mood swings, hyperactivity, even learning and behavior problems. Junk food, sweets, and even healthy high-carbo, low-fat foods can wreak havoc on insulin and blood-sugar levels--imbalances that lie at the heart of these problems.
Drawing on more than a decade of research, Drs. Richard and Rachael Heller, authors of the bestselling The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, have helped more than a million people break free of the addiction to carbohydrates. In Carbohydrate-Addicted Kids, these renowned researchers present parents with two struggle-free alternatives: an easy Step-By-Step Plan as well as a quick, Jump-Start Plan. Each plan corrects the root cause of the carbohydrate cravings and is especially designed with kids and teens in mind. As their insulin and blood-sugar levels become balanced, youngsters are free to enjoy a wide variety of foods, and mood, behavior, and learning problems literally disappear.
Help your child break free of carbo cravings, sugar highs, and sugar lows--without deprivation--for life.

Review of The CR Way: Using the Secrets of Calorie Restriction for a Longer, Healthier Life (Paperback)

Back when I was 200 pounds, 6 months after having my third child--I was shopping around for a diet book when I ran across 'Beyond The 120 Year Diet' the only known thing to extend human life.I read it, and re-read it, followed it to a tee and lost 85 pounds over the next 6 months.I felt so good about my life, so healthy and full of energy, I wanted to share what I'd learned--I gave 10 copies out to my closest friends and family that Christmas.Sadly, I heard from many (those that told me) that it was 'too scientific', or 'too hard'.I had liked it, but understood it could be difficult to read. Some of those I loved, still were overweight like I had been and I didn't think they 'got the message' like I had--they'd not been inspired...Now, 6 years later, a few more CR books have come and gone, this is the newest on the scene. It has all the same basic information in an easy to read format, but it has the updated science and even addresses some new research such as intermittent fasting--but it is all presented in a simple to 'digest' manner :-).The authors do not present one narrow path of how to do calorie restriction, instead they give many routes to the same longevity benefits. The book is a smorgasbord for people who are at different commitment levels to CR, you can do it as in depth or as lightly as you want. The authors give you the information to do CR on a busy lifestyle. This year I have a new book to share, to inspire my friends and family. This is the first book since 'Beyond The 120 Year Diet' that I can confidently give as a present, and know it will educate in a gentle manner, and at the very least impart a heightened sense of awareness about the food my friends and family eat, so small steps can be taken for better health.I recommend this book to those interested in a diet that works, and becomes second nature for a healthier, longer life.
