Review of Sly Moves: My Proven Program to Lose Weight, Build Strength, Gain Will Power, and Live your Dream (Hardcover)

A touching memento reproduced on the pages of SLY MOVES is a photo of Steve Reeves in full gladiator costume driving a chariot, autographed to Stallone: "To Sylvester, a man who knew what he wanted and knew how to get there and didn't compromise."In a way this is the closest thing we're probably going to get from the notoriously inarticulate Sly Stallone, and he does have some amazing stories to tell along with the tips on how to lose weight and maintain perfect muscle definition.Did you know he used to clean the lion cages at New York's Bronx Zoo?Frank Capra told Sly that ROCKY was a movie he wished he (Capra) had made! Now, that's a compliment.Elvis invited him to Graceland.Charlie Chaplin asked him to visit Switzerland! His dreams had all come true. SLY MOVES reprints the poem Muhammad Ali wrote in praise of Sly:

"You fought and you worked
You're a determined guy.
Rocky is great
And we all love you, Sly."

His tips include frequent napping."I'm not suggesting you sleep the afternoons away. That will make you even groggier.Ten minutes max is usually all you need to feel energized and to restore a sense of peace."Lie on the floor with your feet above your heart, he says--resting your ankles on a chair."Just do it when the boss isn't looking," he advises tongue in cheek. As for eating, Sly opens the refrigerator door and lists all the food he sees there."2 dozen large organic eggs, a bowl of grapes, 1 small bottle of cinnamon flax seed oil, 1 jar of olives, 1 jar gourmet mustard, 1 six-pack of Diet Pepsi," etc. It's a private peek into the innermost life of a great fitness buff and superstar.I expect that this book will be a big best seller, because everyone wants to look good and few look as good as Stallone even on his worst day!

Review of Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine (Paperback)

I normally don't write reviews at all, but this book certainly deserves one. The highlights:
* It doesn't consists of all these sweet recipes but has great tasting alternatives (I could never get into all that sweet stuff); there are no dates, bananas, etc., and there are some good explanations as to why
* The recipes don't require a lot of strange ingredients of which I never even heard before; ingredients are easily found
* You don't have to plan days ahead of time to just produce one dish; a lot of it can be put together quickly
* It does have its share of nuts, but for some reason I don't resent that here as I did in most of my other books; they don't seem to be everywhere
* There are NO wheat recipes (yeah!); I'm terribly allergic to that... Instead there are lots of recipes with flax seeds, and there is a very good explanation as to why wheat/grains are not used.
I ordered two other books at the same time I got this one and I already owned two raw food books, but this one is the only one I use. The recipes appeal to me much more than the ones in the other books. There still are tools that are necessary for the raw food kitchen, like a dehydrator, juicer, high-speed blender, etc., but there is a section in the beginning that outlines which ones they recommend.

Product Description
Medical researchers have found that a high-fat, high-sugar diet, combined with environmental pollutants and stress, can lead to a buildup of toxins in the body collectively known as chronic degenerative disease. Here holistic physician Gabriel Cousens provides a dietary regimen that may help reverse this process by introducing whole, natural, organic, and raw foods into the diet. These restorative "live" foods can reverse chronic disease and bring back health and vitality. This eclectic cookbook shares 250 delicious vegan recipes from chefs at the Tree of Life Cafe. Dishes include Avocado Salad with Rosemary, Green Dragon Broccoli, Raw-violis, Lavender Milk, and Carob Coconut Cream Eclairs. International entrees, juices, and aromatherapeutic remedies are also featured.

Review of Eat Right for Your Type Complete Blood Type Encyclopedia (Paperback)

I admit it: I was suspicious of this diet. Before examining this book, I thought the diet sounded very "fad-like"(and I remain wholly unconvinced by the personality-trait correspondences which are NOT essential to the scientific basis of the diet, just a curiosity). I read negative reviews and their justifications. What I noticed was that most of these reviews sounded a lot like the criticisms leveled at the Atkins diet, a diet that does work for a lot of people (though not all--this book makes clear why) that have since been disproven by double-blind studies.A number noted that d'Adamo's theories weren't backed up by scientific research.Fair enough; this book cites double-blind studies and peer-reviewed research extensively, far more so than the Eat Right and Cook Right books. It also fine-tunes some of the earlier findings. This is ongoing research, something you just don't see in proponents of "fad" diets.D'Adamo has clearly been listing to his critics, and makes every attempt to clarify, fine-tune, and explain how all of this works.
I picked this book--and the diet--up when I browsed it in the store and noted that the medical problems in my family charted almost exactly with the risk factors for blood type.(Blood type correlations with disease have actually been established in peer-reviewed medical journals for a long time, although they aren't much talked about.)I tried the diet.I'm about three weeks in.I've lost 10 pounds, my digestive problems are much improved, I feel more energetic, I don't crave sweets, and -- the most convincing thing for me, because I wasn't looking for it and therefore can't attribute it to the placebo effect -- the morning stiffness I've had for 30 years is gone.It takes at least a week for things to kick in--especially if one has increased intestinal permeability due to intestinal damage--but it does, and for many, myself included, the results are quite profound.
I am not a scientist, nor am I claiming that d'Adamo has everything right. There are some typos in the book, although most misprints are corrected on the website (www.dadamo.com)--hard to find, but worth looking. This is ongoing research, however. D'Adamo also uses that site to update new findings on food compatibility.I think this diet could easily be used in conjunction with others appropriate to type. For instance, type O people will do well with Atkins as long as they cut out the wheat gluten and dairy; people with food allergies may have to limit intake of more foods than he lists. He suggests 70-80% compliance works for most people.
Even the critics suggest that this diet isn't likely to harm anyone.I fully expect some version of this to be exonerated as fully as, if not more than, Atkins. In the meantime, this is a great resource, it's interesting reading even for the healthy, and it is more likely to engage a reader like myself who likes to see detailed scientific justification before jumping into a health plan.

Review of Cracking the Metabolic Code (Paperback)

I originally bought this book because of the title thinking that it would help with my metabolism and give me answers to how to speed it up. In that regard the title was misleading but as I later learned while reading this book that metabolism refers to much more than how fast your body burns calories.Anyone serious about making their body the #1 priority and giving it what it needs to function properly and increase health longevity should read this book.Excellent, excellent, excellent.I could never be in the medical field but I understood enough to learn about the interactions of the body system as it refers to your health. The supplement list is great (I would love to know if there is an updated version in case new products are available). Also the test guide to learn where your problem areas are is very useful.

All in all 5 star, I only wish there were more doctors like Dr. LaValle to assist people in there quest for optimal health.

Review of Natural Health, Natural Medicine: The Complete Guide to Wellness and Self-Care for Optimum Health (Paperback)

This review is written by a former hospital administrator of just under 2 decades. I have been studying health and nutrition for more than decade. I became very interested in alternative medicine when a family member was diagnosed with kidney cancer and the allopathic doctors (traditional MD's) could give no reason for the tumor.

The purpose of this book is to present a complete guide to preventative health maintenance. With preventative health maintenance described as a timely and appropriate investment of energy in your well being that will save you trouble down the road.

He subdivides his book as follows:

PART ONE: PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE (The basic information about designing a healthy lifestyle)
1. What Should I Eat?
2. Answers to Common Questions About Diet and Health
3. What Will You Have to Drink?
4. Air and Breath
5. A Guide to Exercise for People Who Hate the Whole Idea of It
6. Relaxation, Rest, and Sleep
7. Habits
8. Connections

PART TWO: SPECIFIC PREVENTION:OUTWITTING THE KILLERS (Specific advice about reducing your risks of getting the diseases that kill most people prematurely in our society)
9.How Not to Get a Heart Attack
10. How Not to Get a Stroke
11. How Not to Get Cancer
12. How to Protect Your Immune System

PART THREE:BASIC NATURAL TREATMENTS (the tools in the forms or natural treatments that we can use ourselves)
13. Simple Measures
14. Vitamins and Supplements
15. The Herbal Medicine Chest

PART FOUR:A TREASURE OF HOME REMEDIES FOR COMMON AILMENTS (this section deals with common ailments that respond well to gentle, natural therapies and lifestyle modification)
APPENDIX A:Finding Practitioners
APPENDIX B:Finding Supplies
APPENDIX C:Sample Recipes

In part one of the book the doctor does a wonderful job of explaining what we should and more importantly should not eat.The first chapter of the book is worth the price of the book alone. The doctor outlines 9 principles for a healthy diet that he explains in great detail without losing those of us that are not trained physicians or nutritionists. These principles are simplistic but very powerful. If you are a follower of a low carbohydrate diet you will not agree with what you will read in this section.

The doctor also goes into great detail regarding his recommendations for physical activity. He discusses all the common forms of exercise and the pros and cons of each form of exercise. How much exercise do we need?Thirty minutes of aerobic exercise at least 5 days a week. Not much of a surprise, but after you read the section on exercise you will understand why you need that much aerobic exercise, and hopefully that will get all of us off the couch, or away from our computers with a little more frequently. The doctor also discusses stretching and strength training and how much of these we need and why.

Part two of the book, on how to avoid specific diseases, is very well written, easy to understand, and easy to follow for those individuals that are highly motivated. The suggestions will not be palatable to everyone. But, if health is your primary motivation, there are wonderful ideas and suggestions contained in these chapters.

In Part three of the book the doctor has a brief chapter on simple measures that is very informative. In this chapter the doctor discusses simple techniques that we can all use at home to improve the overall quality of our health.I use the techniques in this chapter to feel better when I get a cold, or just don't feel like myself. The techniques really are simple and easy to use, but have a power effect on my overall well being.

Part four of the book covers the resources that any of us would need to follow the practices brought forth in the other portions of the book.

In Summation, I feel that this book is very well written and easy to understand.Once you have read this book I believe it will become your bible for how to maintain optimum health and treat common ailments.I highly recommend this book to anyone that has an interest in health.
