Review of Eat, Drink and Be Mindful: How to End Your Struggle with Mindless Eating and Start Savoring Food with Intention and Joy (Paperback)

As a psychologist, I would certainly recommend this book to clients who have eating difficulties (or therapists who work with them). The workbook has a non-judgmental friendly tone that makes it easy to read.Dr. Albers includes several good assessments/checklists that can be used to pinpoint how you are struggling with mindless eating. The rest of the book contains many well thought-out exercises and practical suggestions to target different aspects of eating issues.I think this book can help to change your relationship with food.

Product Description
In the rush of everyday life, most people have difficulty finding ways to give their relationship with food the full attention it deserves. Demanding diets saddle you with guilt about your appetite, but overeating and mindless snacking prove ultimately unsatisfying as well. Mindful eating is a whole new way of looking at food. Instead of rushing through meals, mindful eating emphasizes slowing down and savoring what you eat.
Eat, Drink, and Be Mindful, by the author of Eating Mindfully, includes mindfulness tips, activities, and checklists to help you start a mindful eating program, evaluate your progress, and discover a healthier and richer relationship with food.
  • Become aware of hunger cues
  • Make wise food choices
  • End emotional eating
  • Practice self-acceptance and compassion
  • Be in the moment at mealtime

"This book could be a godsend for anyone suffering from lifelong issues around eating, weight, and appearance. It presents a sane and novel approach to finding a balanced relationship to food, eating, and your body through mindfulness. The book is written by someone with obvious depth of experience and savvy who is definitely on your side, whatever your difficulties or challenges. Eat, Drink, and Be Mindful may be just what the doctor ordered, or would have but couldn't--until now."

Review of The Diabetes Lifestyle Book: Facing Your Fears & Making Changes for a Long & Healthy Life (Paperback)

This book has the potential to be a life changer for people with diabetes.
It teaches Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) principles to help people with diabetes come to grips with all the emotions involved with living with diabetes. There's also a lot of good information about the condition itself.

I highly recommend this book. I was already familiar with ACT before I read it, but the author does a fine job of teaching some basic ACT concepts. If you're a diabetic, please buy this book! Thank you.

Product Description
This revolutionary book focuses on a two-pronged approach to diabetes management. First, it provides in-depth education about diabetes, focusing on the difficulties inherent in the self-management of the disease. This includes information about diet, exercise, medication compliance, blood glucose testing, insulin administration, as well as potential complications and how to avoid them. The book also addresses the enormous emotional and psychological component of diabetes.

Review of The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook, Fourth Edition (Paperback)

If you or someone you know suffers from a panic disorder, anxiety, OCD, or phobias (especially agoraphobia and social phobias), you must read this book. It is THE best source of information and practical help I have ever seen on the subject.
The book contains a wide array of topics: causes of anxiety, coping with attacks, pharmaceutical treatments, holistic treatments, psychological approaches, nutrition, relaxation, where to find support, how to give support... the book would be worth triple its price just for the richness of information Dr. Bourne has compiled.
Add to that the excellent workbook exercises and techniques, and you have a truly indispensable resource.
I was very pleased with the presentation of the material. This book is not overflowing with warm and fuzzy, touchy-feely reassurances like many "self-help" books. Instead, it has proven, practical, self-paced techniques and exercises which you can use in your daily life, presented in a clear and easy-to-digest format. It's not a dry textbook, and it's not a bit of pop-psychology fluff -- this is a powerful tool for anyone whose quality of life has diminished because of anxiety and fear.
Good luck!

Review of The Smart Student's Guide to Healthy Living: How to Survive Stress, Late Nights, and the College Cafeteria (Paperback)

This book was given to me by my boyfriend. Since I'm home from college for the summer, it was on my bookshelf for a few weeks before I started flipping through it as I prepared to head back to the dorm. When I had finished reading it, though, I was pleased with what I found.

As a girl who goes back and forth between "fad" diets and approaching buffets with wreckless abandon, I found the Smart Student's Guide to be something that has long-term potential. The meal plan is more of a "life-style" plan. And it is in wonderful incremental steps--something I found especially helpful! The focus is not only on eating, there is also a pleasant section on dormroom workouts, but the resounding theme was general well-being through choices in food and activities. I would call it "well-rounded" and well researched.

Most helpful to me, was the section on dorm recipes--even though my college is well known for its cafeteria, I love having the option of simple, healthy and well-proportined meals that make me feel a little closer to home.

Product Description
Fight the Freshman Fifteen, Sleepless Nights, and Other Pitfalls of College Life
Welcome to college life. It's full of possibilities-and pitfalls. Cafeteria food is awful, but there sure is a lot of it. And you can eat as much (or more) of anything-and everything-as you want. And in a single year of study, you can grow a gut that will haunt you for the rest of your life. No one in the dorm is going to tell you when to go to bed, and you can wear each all-night cram session like a badge of honor. But on two hours of sleep a night, the circles under your eyes will make you look like a raccoon before midterms-which you'll then probably fail. And exercise-what's that? Say hello to thunder thighs and saggy bat-wing arms.
Sound awful? Good. It's supposed to. But take heart: With the simple advice you'll find in this book, you can eat right and get the sleep and exercise you need to excel academically and creatively. You'll get the straight story on how to avoid the freshman fifteen, and learn how to make good choices in the cafeteria and make smart snacks on those few useless appliances they allow you to keep in your room. You'll get tips on fitting regular exercise into a busy class schedule and getting enough sleep without being the only one who never-NEVER-makes it to the latest of the late-night parties.
· Eat smart to fight the freshman fifteen, food allergies, and fatigue· Prepare smart snacks right in your dorm room-without burning the place down!· Get enough sleep without missing out on too much late night fun· Build the body of your dreams with smart exercise tips· Make the grade without succumbing to stress
