Review of The Miracle Heart : The Ultimate Guide to Preventing and Curing Heart Disease With Diet and Supplements (Mass Market Paperback)

This book summarizes much of the latest research on prevention of cardiovascular related diseases. The author covers almost all (forgot, e.g. "melatonin") of the bases in relating the latestdevelopments in diet related heart disease prevention, and as such I foundit an excellent informative book. The author reports the studies, theresults, the recommendations and the dosages relating to supplementation ofvitamins, minerals, some herbal products, omega 3, etc. etc.The bookcontains new information that I believe has yet to be widely disemminated.. I discern the same weakness in this book as in much of the currentinformation on diet, to wit, how to combine allinto a single plan oftreatment. The author might have reported to us that studies have yet tobe done on how these divergent benefits of supplements can beadvantageously and safely combined, but instead omitted any suchdiscussion. Additionally, and I note this as another suspected weaknessin my mind of the medical work currently being done on diet, it seems thatall of the information is coming out of what I consider to be highlysuspicious "population" studies, as opposed to research onindividuals( ormonkees) on the chemical effects on a single individual ofsupplementation. If I am going to take 1000 grams of vitamin C per day, Iwould like to know the immediate and long term chemical effect, as opposedto knowing that 6000 people lowered their risk of heart attack by 19% by sotaking. And, then, immediately after reading the book, what do we get butone study concludingthat excess C contributes to, rather than prevents, the problem. But as an educational tool this is a very fine effort!

Review of The New 8-Week Cholesterol Cure (Mass Market Paperback)

This is a great book for those who want all the details on how to proect your heart, against cholesterol and other heart disease risk factors. The author is trained in both journalism and science, and after suffering one heart attack and thinking about leaving his kids fatherless, he "got religion."He now reads all the medical research on heart health, distilling it down and explaining it to the lay reader. He has the right attitude, only trusting studies that have good methodology and have been replicated.

He considers diet, including fruits and vegetables, fats, meats, soluble fiber and alcohol. He goes over the research on antioxidents and other supplements, including the vitamin that works better than prescription drugs: niacin. He also covers stress and exercise.

Heart disease is completely preventable. If you have high cholesterol or other risk factors, this book will set you straight on what works and what doesn't.My doctor agrees with the parts he's read, and the information here is in agreement with other sources like the American Heart Association website and webmd.com.

If what you want is an owners manual for your heart, a book length treatment that mentions all the important studies and their results, then this book is for you.For me and my nurse mother-in-law, this is the bible on heart health.

Review of The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan (Mass Market Paperback)

This book gave a lot of valuable information in a relatively succinct manner.Understanding this simple theory, and with plenty of examples, food choices, and menu items, following the book made it easy to adjust myfood choices to feel full on less calories, and provides an easy approachto managing weight.
The authors also debunk the 40-30-30 method of eatingwhich is very popular right now, and without mentioning him by name, BarrySears "Zone" approach.
The only real criticism, which does notdetract from the subject matter, is the layout of the book.Too many"sidebar" type inserts are included which made it impossible toread the book in a flowing manner.Additionally, much of that informationwould have been better included in an appendix. You also have to look forthe information in more than one place, when a more thoughtful approachwould have included that information in one table. For example, dietaryfiber content, which is important, is contained in one table, while thenumber of calories and energy density (the main focus of the book) are inanother. This information could have and should have been combined in onetable, which would have made the book a much better resource.
If you havefood allergies, or sensitivites, or are required to make restrictions forother reasons, you are on your own as to what foods to eliminate from theauthors' recommendations. That is something outside the scope of thisbook.
