Review of Under the Influence: A Guide to the Myths and Realities of Alcoholism (Mass Market Paperback)

I find the comments that the book is out of date sad, because the vast majority of alcoholism treatment programs as well as public opinion have not yet caught up to this book.
Milam advances several important concepts:
1. Alcoholism is a disease like diabetes. Psychology and morality play no role, except in the alcoholic's reaction emotionally to the consequences of the disease [hiding it, seeking help, etc.] If you think this view of alcoholism is completely accepted now, try telling your boss you are an alcoholic.
2. Milam then explains HOW alcoholism is a disease in fascinating detail. Alcoholics are not addicted to alcohol, but to a complex physical process that happens when they drink. Basically, the alcoholic's body reacts to the presence of alcohol in the body differently from that of a "normal" person, and no amount of counseling/threats/religious conversions can change that.
3. Alcoholics may not know when to save themselves, and may need help [he shoots down the "hitting bottom" myth]. Do you wait for a diabetic to go into a coma before you help them?
4. Treatment for the alcoholic must address the poor state of the alcoholic's health and nutrition. Alcoholic tremors, shaking, illusions, paranoia, etc. are caused by alcoholic malnutrition. Alcohol strips the body of water soluble vitamins, particularly the crucial B vitamins, and prevents the liver and other organs from repairing the body.
The one section of the book I don't agree with concerns the role of government/public agencies in alcoholism treatment. Milam expects too much of them. But that does not affect the brilliance of this book.
In the reviews here, there are some criticisms that Milam describes only "worst case" scenarios. That is not correct. He clearly describes all the stages of alcoholism, from the "I just want to have fun" stage to the lying in the gutter stage, and he recognizes that the disease progresses differently in people.
As an alcoholic who has been sober for twenty years, I can't recommend this book enough. It provides hard information, not moralizing.

Review of Chakra Foods for Optimum Health: A Guide to the Foods That Can Improve Your Energy, Inspire Creative Changes, Open Your Heart, and Heal Body, Mind, and Spirit (Paperback)

Until I read this book, I never thought about the HOW of eating, only the WHAT.Deanna points to the equal importance and the studies behind who we're eating with and how the meal takes place. For example, she cites a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine from Drs. Christakis and Fowler. They demonstrated that patterns of body weight gain were directly connected to our social networks. What does that mean? The greater the connection an individual has with obese friends and family (even if miles apart), the larger the influence on he or she developing obesity. If you're emotionally close with overweight people, there is also a higher chance of you becoming obese. As a mom, this makes me thing about being in great shape for my kid's healthy future and my own too! This is only one of many amazing insights and studies presented in Chakra Foods. It will have you thinking about food in a whole new way, an empowering way.

Product Description
Nutritionist and yoga practitioner Deanna Minich's Chakra Foods provides information on how to heal emotional and physical woes through making the right food choices. The material for this book developed out of the author's highly successful "Nutrition for the Soul" classes, workshops, and private counseling sessions. Not a diet book, it looks at both the nutritional and spiritual aspects of the foods we eat and how they can heal us. For example, someone feeling stuck in their lives could turn to chapter 5 and find a list of orange foods -- apricots, carrots, salmon, pumpkin, oranges -- to help their sacral chakra. For each chakra, specific affirmations and other practices are also offered, as are meal plans and recipes. Helpful lists, charts, and diagrams help readers easily pinpoint and diagnose themselves and the various prescriptive options are all very clearly explained. With lots of useful sidebars, this book really is a treasure trove of energy medicine in the form of food -- truly food for the body, mind, and soul!

* Looks at the energetics of what and how we eat and how to rebalance through healthier choices.

* Easy to implement and stick with plan.

Review of The Graying of America: An Encyclopedia of Aging, Health, Mind, and Behavior (2d ed.) (Hardcover)

Thoughfully written, interesting from cover to cover and painstakingly comprehensive - there isn't much more you could ask from a reference book, particularly if you're not an expert on the subject.I really enjoyed reading The Graying of America, and found it much more interesting (and less dry) than I expected. As a gerentology novice who works as a volunteer with hospice patients, I wanted something that would show me many facets of living with aging, rather than my usual reading on coming to terms with dying. This book fit the bill to a "T", and I would imagine it would have a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in aging well and understanding the life of the elderly.

Review of Vitamin C: The Real Story, the Remarkable and Controversial Healing Factor (Paperback)

Apart from various websites, this is the first book I've read about Vitamin C and I found it immensely informative and very valuable.I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in achieving optimal health andavoiding as much disease as possible later in life.Saul & Hickey do a good job explaining the history, the science, methodology and reasoning behind large doses, the controversy, the chemistry and laying down the basics as you proceed through the book and set you up well for their synthesis in the final chapters where they lay down a very detailed explanation of how the fundamental cause of atherosclerosis is highly likely to arise from less than optimal levels of antioxidants particularly Vitamin C in the body, these were the sections I found the most interesting. The book also has a great section on cancer, how it develops, and how Vitamin C can play a role in prevention and treatment.

Having done some internet research today since finishing the book I am a little surprised they never mention the role of the various genes that have arisen in animals that can't produce their own Vitamin C such as the one that produces Uric Acid (as wikipedia says it provides about half of the antioxidant capacity of the plasma), along with the ability to recycle ascorbate which is also seems unique to upper primates, guinea pigs and bats according to this recent article.[...] I think this is interesting too and could have been mentioned when comparing our vitamin C requirements to animals that make their own (hence the four stars).Nevertheless, this is minor, and gorillas eat 2-5g of ascorbate a day anyway which is way beyond what most people eat and about the range they recommend here for maintaining good health.

I think they make a very strong argument for increasing intake for optimum health, so I know I will be doing just that.
This is a great book, which is easy to read, concise and full of valuable information that could very well extend the length and quality of your life - and if you ever catch a lethal strain of legionnaires disease you'll know what to do!

Product Description

Research into vitamin C is progressing rapidly despite a lack of funding from conventional medicine into its clinical applications. Orthomolecular medicine, which uses nutrients in large doses to treat disease, is regarded as highly controversial by the medical establishment. This rejection of the orthomolecular approach has little basis in science and reflects a bias at the heart of the status quo.

This book tells the story of how the controversy about vitamin C has grown and continues while the increasing evidence demonstrates the value of the orthomolecular approach. The story of vitamin C is an exciting journey into the workings of science and medicine, the intrigues of political economic influences, and the evolutionary history of humankind. Someday, medicine without vitamin C therapy will be compared to childbirth without sanitation or surgery without anesthetic.

- You_ll see that mega doses of vitamin C have proven to be an effective antibiotic, a nontoxic anticancer agent, and also a treatment for heart disease.
- We_ll explain the real reasons behind conventional medicine_s rejection of vitamin C therapy.
- You_ll meet the pioneers of vitamin C research, who often faced great resistance in their advocacy for the health benefits of this nutrient.

Vitamin C is a simple molecule with powerful effects. If you want to be healthy, you should take enough vitamin C. After reading this book, you will know why and how much.

Review of The Hidden Cure: The Five Laws of Perfect Health (Paperback)

Let me start by saying that I met Laurens 15 years ago while surfing in our beautiful island Barbados. We started talking about health, life, pyramids, ecology, energy...we shared same interests and became friends in a snap.

About a year later I broke a finger during a surf session. The pain was so intense I was unable to do anything with that hand. That evening we met at his house and he told me he could use EMF to reduce the swelling and the pain. I was skeptic: how could some electrical frequencies applied to my body reduce pain??? He checked a data base in his computer to find a frequency that matched the vibration of healthy bone and muscle tissue. He also added some frequencies for two types of Arnica (a plant that reduces swelling). Using a machine capable of generating those frequencies, he applied them through some meridians in my hands and at the end of the 5 minute session I already felt less pain in the area. By the next morning the pain and the swelling where virtually gone. I was so impressed. I shook hands with him using my broken finger..!!!

That event changed my life. I enrolled in his program. I enrolled my wife, my parents and my kids. We learned about true health. We learned what and how to eat. We learned the connection of fungi to chronic disease. We learned how simple sugars feed those fungi and rob vital energy. We learned to cure the Earth by curing the individual. Amazing..!!! It has been an incredible voyage...!!!

And now its all in this book. It condenses all this knowledge into an easy and fulfilling read. Its time to get this message to the World. 5 Laws = Perfect Health.

Congratulations to you and to your beautiful family...!!!

1 Luv' to all
Ralf

In this solution-based handbook, he outlines a clinically proven easy-to-follow plan to reduce the fungal and toxic load in your diet and reboot your nervous systems as a means to holistic recovery.
The 5 Laws, which help reverse and eliminate the adverse effects of global fungal pollution, include reducing sugar and carbohydrates, eating proteins according to your blood type, eating fats according to your metabolism, eating vegetables that influence your body's biochemical speed, and correcting your body's electromagnetic frequencies.

With case studies, a seven day eating plan, and helpful recipes included, The Hidden Cure: The 5 Laws of Perfect Health will help your body promote a powerful immune system, rebalance your internal environment, and lead you to optimal health.

Review of 365 Health and Happiness Boosters (Paperback)

This little book is chock full of helpful suggestions
from the very "easy to get along with" author, MJ
Ryan. What I love the most about this book is
that Ms. Ryan offers such a variety of ideas AND
she shares ideas that DON'T work for her that
MAY be helpful to you.She doesn't make those
ideas WRONG, she simply says "I don't value
this but many do" such as Walking Meditation... and
she gripes about exercise yet asks you to do it
and maybe, then, she will feel energized to
exercise, too.

Some of my favorite suggestions include
creating a drawer of happinesss enhancers,
Call in Well (this is on my Son's birthday, May
6... it isn't a national holiday YET!).... Walking
Meditation... (I love walking meditation, works
wonders for me..... and is on August 19, my daughter
Emma's birthday).... and Dedicate this Day...
by sending positive loving feelings to someone
in need (this is on December 25, my daughter
Katherine's birthday.)

This book is a perfect one to use as a daily
companion, taking one day at a time - or for
a quick pick-me-up, thumb to any page
and apply what you learn.

Great stuff!

Product Description
Happiness begets happiness. When a person is happy, the feeling ripples out to others nearby. Research has shown that happiness also leads to better health. One-third of the population knows the secret to happiness - that it's an inside job, not contingent on possessions, status, or even life circumstances. Fortunately, the other two-thirds can learn to cultivate contentment. This book offers 365 concrete ways to experience more happiness. Many have to do with changing one's outlook and learning to lift one's spirit in the moment; others address everything from eating habits and interactions with others to sleeping patterns and taking nutritional supplements. Some of the tasks are lighthearted, others quite serious. They all will have a positive effect on mind, body, and spirit.

Review of Meal by Meal: 365 Daily Meditations for Finding Balance Through Mindful Eating (Paperback)

I was familiar with the work of Donald Altman from his earlier 'Art of the Inner Meal' and was impressed how his writing has found a fresh and densely pragmatic new form. 'Meal by Meal' is a fluid read of inspiring quotes coupled with practical insights by the author. This book is extremely handsome, a beautifully laid out composition making this both useful and pleasurable to read. If you have the discipline to read a page at a time, you will find this helpful day by day. I personally had trouble putting it down and would read a month at a time... but the suggestions are valid and useful on a second slower read. Worthwhile investment for someone wishing to calm their compulsive behavior for a more reflective perspective.

Product Description
Meal by Meal is a book of comfort, guidance, and insight for anyone with an unhealthy relationship with food. Its power is in its approach: each day is a self-contained journey of conscious eating to help people nurture new and sustainable attitudes and practices. Although bad habits cannot be changed overnight, the author, Buddhist devotee Donald Altman, shows how to find peace by focusing on food issues one meal at a time. He shares inspirational daily meditations, including quotes from Zen stories, Native American practices, Hindu scriptures, the Bible, and sages from all major wisdom traditions. He also explores food preparation, rituals, and social attitudes and examines questions like "How can we learn that eating is not a pleasure race, but an area to find grace?" and "How can we stop using food to fill ourselves up, and instead use it to fulfill ourselves?" Through daily reflections, Altman enables people to make wise food choices and create balance in their lives.

Review of Diet, Shatkarmas and Amaroli - Yogic Nutrition & Cleansing for Health and Spirit (Paperback)

Once on the spiritual path, you will get a calling from within to watch what foods you put into your body and how you keep your body clean and healthy. This, namely saucha or purity, as Yogani explains in his book, belongs to the Niyama limb, one of the eight limbs of yoga from the sutras of Patanjali.
Yogani has done an excellent job in covering various factors of diet, and explains why most "fad diets" fail. The concept that one diet plan will fit all is not practical and it is important to listen to your body when you decide to improve your diet. He covers what kinds of foods to eat, how much to eat, and ways to cook food. He explains the foods that help balance the Ayurveda doshas - vata, pitta, kapha. He also covers fasting, addictions, drugs and yoga, and talks about the relation between kundalini (specifically the inner processes of soma, amrita and ojas), digestion and diet .
In Shatkarmas he covers cleansing techniques for mouth, nasal passages and sinuses (various forms of "neti"), colon ("bhasti"), intestinal wash ("dhauti"), nauli ("churning" of the abdominal muscles), kapalbhati ("shining face" technique) and trataka ("steady gazing").
This book also covers detailed instructions for Amaroli (urine therapy) and explains the many applications and benefits this practice has in health and spirituality.
He finally puts all of the techniques together and describes how all of this, when done along with meditation and pranayama, will help us progress on our spiritual path, increasing our inner silence, happiness and creativity in all we do in life.
This book helped me understand how to listen to my body for cues on what kind of foods I should eat to pacify the various dosha flare ups that I seem to go through on my spiritual path. Light and nutritious diet along with eating smaller quantities do help a lot. This book also helped me understand the changes occurring in me with respect to soma and amrita. I have added the neti, nauli, kapalbhati and trakata to my yoga practices and they do help with the movement of inner energies and seem to enhance my practice by a lot.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for one place to find all the information required for yogic diet and cleansing in one book. Really awesome book.

Product Description

Review of The Volumetrics Weight-Control Plan (Mass Market Paperback)

This book gave a lot of valuable information in a relatively succinct manner.Understanding this simple theory, and with plenty of examples, food choices, and menu items, following the book made it easy to adjust myfood choices to feel full on less calories, and provides an easy approachto managing weight.
The authors also debunk the 40-30-30 method of eatingwhich is very popular right now, and without mentioning him by name, BarrySears "Zone" approach.
The only real criticism, which does notdetract from the subject matter, is the layout of the book.Too many"sidebar" type inserts are included which made it impossible toread the book in a flowing manner.Additionally, much of that informationwould have been better included in an appendix. You also have to look forthe information in more than one place, when a more thoughtful approachwould have included that information in one table. For example, dietaryfiber content, which is important, is contained in one table, while thenumber of calories and energy density (the main focus of the book) are inanother. This information could have and should have been combined in onetable, which would have made the book a much better resource.
If you havefood allergies, or sensitivites, or are required to make restrictions forother reasons, you are on your own as to what foods to eliminate from theauthors' recommendations. That is something outside the scope of thisbook.

Review of The Live Food Factor: The Comprehensive Guide to the Ultimate Diet for Body, Mind, Spirit & Planet (Paperback)

Occasionally someone comes along and just plain gets it right in a field of study, and Susan Schenck does just that. Her new book, "The Live Food Factor" is a work that intelligently makes a multi-layered subject understandable for the neophyte while addressing the complexities that arise for those already initiated.

I have been involved with raw foods and Natural Hygiene for nearly twenty years and having been exposed to almost every significant work on the subject, I'll say that Ms. Schenck has produced something that I've wished to see for a long time: a single-volume, easy to read book about raw foods that I can confidently recommend to others and not have to personally explain the many caveats about the subject. Ms. Schenck identifies and explains them for us right in the book.

Like any study, "raw foodism" spawns diverse schools of thought, and "The Live Food Factor" satisfactorily deals with nearly all of them. Without the somewhat off-putting "absolute tone" that other raw food works occasionally assume, Susan Schenck even-handedly discusses arguments and counter-arguments about various doctrines within the field. She includes chapters on the history of the movement and the pioneers and leaders that brought it to where it is today.

The book also contains informative testimonials by raw food users, complete with before-and-after pictures that should provide inspiration for any reader. Add to this a question and answer chapter, a recipe section, sample menus, five appendices, a massive bibliography, lists of raw food restaurants, lots of raw food resources, and a very useful index, plus much more.

Although the book is very comprehensive regarding foods and their impact on health, it only touches upon other areas of Natural Hygiene like rest, fresh air, and exercise. However, these are studies unto themselves and beg to be sequels to "The Live Food Factor." I would hope that Ms. Schenck writes them, particularly if they are as well done as this first book

In summary, "The Live Food Factor" is a very informative one-volume course on the raw food lifestyle. As much as I've managed to learn on the subject over the years, this book still held for me new bits of information on nearly every page. It is well formatted and written in a good, readable style (thanks to the editing skills of Bob Avery, himself a leading exponent of raw foods). In my opinion, the book could be used as a text for anyone learning or teaching the raw food lifestyle for personal fitness or at spas, retreats, resorts, health clinics, etc., and I highly recommend it for such.

Everyone who eats should read this book! The first edition won the IPPY award as "most progressive health book of the year." The second edition of the Live Food Factor is an updated, expanded and revised comprehensive guide to the raw food diet, with a section on inspiration, a section on science, a section on the history of raw foodism, a complete how-to section, including frequently asked questions & answers, and recipes. It contains 66 scientific studies to support the superiority of eating raw. This second edition brings a summary of all the benefits of Natural Hygiene as well. It includes several chapters written mainly by Victoria BidWell, including the true cause of illness, how to detox and an entire chapter on fasting. It also includes a new chapter written mainly by Dr. Vetrano and Dr. Tosca Haag on how to get children to eat raw. There are new testimonials, many new recipes, updated science studies, and even 3 new appendices. It is packed with new and updated information. In fact, this edition has about 37% more information! (The font had to be slightly smaller to squeeze everything in!) It also contains forewords by Dr. V.Vetrano, DC, hMD, PhD, DSci (who worked extensively with Dr. Shelton of the Natural Hygiene movement) and Victoria Boutenko (one of the most noted leaders of the raw food movement). It was carefully edited for accuracy by Bob Avery, expert on the raw food diet and former editor of the M2M magazine, as well as Victoria Bidwell and Dr. Vetrano for accuracy in the Natural Hygiene components.

Review of The Super Antioxidant Diet and Nutrition Guide: A Health Plan for the Body, Mind, and Spirit (Paperback)

My husband and I tried the eating and exercise from this book.We not only shed pounds quickly, we feel healthier than ever--less pain and allergies.Blood tests before and after showed reduced inflamation, lower triglycerides, huge increase in red blood cells and infection fighting T-cells.I finally feel like I'm cooking in a healthy way.Dr. Couey has the science behind it and Robin's recipes and hints on buying and cooking healthy really help me transition to a lifestyle I think we can keep.A nice sidelight is that this helped my lifetime reflux and constipation.

I gave my first copy to a friend and referring my friends. Now I'm ordering another one.
