Review of Shape Training (Paperback)

This book gives a blow by blow account of what you need to do to build a tight firm physique. First you determine your body shape. Then it recommends exercises to best achieve your objectives. Though many of theexercises are suited for gym equipment, at home modifications are alsooffered. The book offers a complete section on nutrition with recipes. Italso gives sample menu plans andsuggestions for Shape training duringpregnancy. I really enjoy the book. However, I did find a few of therecipes somewhat tasteless and I would have liked a few more modificationson the workouts for the at home exerciser. Other than than its well worththe price.

Review of The Wine Lover's Healthy Weight Loss Plan (Paperback)

In my business, I receive a lot of requests for endorsements, but accept only those I deem the best. And I jumped on this request immediately. It could not be more appropriate for my audience.

I agree with the reviewer from Seattle who described this as a great reference book - both for its informed health information and its storehouse of healthy gourmet recipes (no those are NOT compatible).

Not just for wine lovers? No, this is a great source book for those wondering whether wine can be beneficial to their health. The answer is yes it is beneficial, if consumed daily and in moderation. And that's good news for all of us.

Review of The Body Noble: 20 Minutes to a Hot Body with Hollywood's Coolest Trainer (Hardcover)

Reviewed by Sandra MacLean for Reader Views (1/06)

20 minutes to a hot body with Hollywood's coolest trainer? My initial reaction was pretty cynical - sounds like a big load of hype to this fifty something out of condition reader.

Was I ever pleasantly surprised! This book actually delivers the goods. It's full of very practical advice for anyone looking for help with a fitness program to match their unique circumstances. It starts with the basics of getting to know your body and muscles before moving into the specific exercise routines. Then it goes beyond detailed explanations of exercises, as the authors offer wide-ranging, useful and practical information and tips on how to live a healthy lifestyle.

The pleasing absence of jargon and relaxed tone make this book easy to understand and lots of photographs further demonstrate and clarify many points. I enjoyed the light-hearted humour displayed in titles like the "Couch Potato Workout" exercise series especially for devoted couch potatoes out there who still want to be fit. Once you get off the couch you might want to undertake the "Houseclean Pump" series or head out for a "Commuter Pump" session, exercises designed to while away your otherwise wasted commuter time.

There are loads of these examples of how to build exercise into real lives that involve sitting in traffic, sitting on a train, working around the house, sitting at a desk or dealing with hotel room and airport downtime to name a few of the practical applications. The descriptions go far beyond saying you can exercise in these settings and actually describe the exact exercise that is adapted to the situation.

I recommend the chapter "Strengthening Your Weak Links" as a good starting point for anyone who is out of shape or trying to become more fit as part of a program to recover from injury or to deal with arthritis. The authors offer sound advice that demonstrates their firm grasp on the realities faced by their readers. Noble and Colman do a good job of showing how to adjust a fitness regime to individual limitations and challenges.

The Body Noble promises a lot and it delivers a lot. It really does show readers how they can have a fit, sexy body without having to step into a gym or hire a personal trainer. The props are minimal and Noble encourages readers to exercise wherever they find themselves, making this one of the most practical fitness books I have read. Cost is not an issue in pursuing fitness with this program either. In fact, there really aren't any excuses left.

Just about anyone in any age group or starting level of fitness could create an exercise routine that fits their level of ability and schedule with the help of this book. I would recommend it. In fact, I was so fired up I went out and bought an exercise cable to get started!

Review of Senior Fitness: The Diet and Exercise Program For Maximum Health and Longevity (Paperback)

By most reasonable standards Senior Fitness is an exceptional book on health and fitness. Its basic message is simple and intellectually sound. The recommendations are based on both solid science (multiple studies with convergent findings) and the results of the author's own heroic battle against cancer. On a personal level I found the book quite inspiring, providing just the impetus I needed to adjust my personal diet and exercise regimen.Dr. Heidrich doesn't equivocate or offer us simplistic solutions that require no work on our part, but the reward of good health and a vigorous old age should more than justify our efforts. The message is clear, the science is sound and if you're looking for a good book to jump start your own personal fitness program this is a great place to start.

Product Description
Nearing 70, Ruth Heidrich has the bone mass density of a woman in her early thirties and a resting heart rate of 44. Not only that, but she has survived breast cancer for over twenty years and recovered from several accidents that have broken limbs and stopped her (temporarily) doing from what she loves best-keeping fit and being positive.
In Senior Fitness, the "other" Dr. Ruth demonstrates that the senior years don't have to filled with aches and pains. She shows how to dramatically reduce the risk of prostate cancer, varicose veins, osteoporosis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, arthritis, Alzheimer's, and a host of other ailments and diseases that can affect older people. Full of detailed medical information, Senior Fitness shows you how you can eat healthfully, stay fit, and maintain a positive and go-getting attitude to life, maintaining and even increasing physical and sexual fitness well into your latter decades. Part compendium of vital information for your vital signs and part inspiring handbook for taking control of your health and well-being, Senior Fitness is the perfect companion for all those seeking to make life after 60 full of life and dynamism.

Review of The Great Cholesterol Con (Paperback)

The definitive book on the non-dangers of dietary cholesterol and saturated fat was The Cholesterol Myths by Uffe Ravnskov, 2000. Anthony Colpo's book (GCC) has the advantage of being 6 years newer, thus much recent research has been included with individual citations in academic style. GCC also has the advantage that some more likely causes of heart disease are given, then constructive suggestions on lifestyle are given, and these are backed up by excellent references -- over 1400 of them (p xi). It is significant that the first forward is written by Ravnskov, MD, PhD, and a second forward by Duane Graveline, MD, MPH, who wrote Statin Drug Side-Effects, 2004.

In its 368 pages, 78 are references, and about 102 discuss why eating cholesterol and saturated fat do not cause heart disease. This leads to why the statin drugs such as Zocor and Lipitor are overpromoted and do not have a benefit because, even tho they can lower cholesterol levels, such lowering is shown not to be a benefit. About 73 more discuss what might actually cause heart disease. Another Section addresses overblown claims about other drugs to fight heart disease, better diets than low-fat, stress, supplements, alcohol and exercise. Appendices cover other interesting topics, such as lowering homocysteine levels and the false health claims of vegetarians, and of those who perform coronary angioplasty and bypass operations.

The actual evidence from studies in original peer-reviewed papers is presented, with clearly designed tables when the results of multiple trials were given. Colpo wrote the most detailed descriptions of the fraudulent work of Ancel Keys, MD, on the supposed toxicity of staturated fats, as well as on the misguided claims of Dean Ornish, MD, and Nathan Pritikin on low-fat diets I have seen. The unhealthy recommendations of several government agencies and NGOs are brought out. The instigation of Big Pharma is duly noted. On these topics, including recommending low-carb high-fat diets, and certain supplements, The Great Cholesterol Con is in good agreement with similar parts of my own recent book, Malignant Medical Myths (MMM), 2006, and gives much greater detail, and is easier to read, despite smaller print.

There is no index. There is no biographical data. Anthony Colpo is a medical writer and Physical Fitness Trainer who lives in Australia.

Most of Colpo's book is extremely well-researched, and worthwhile for almost anyone to read. Some possible exceptions: His recommendation for the supplement selenium (p195) did not mention that the study he quotes found a tripling of breast cancer (MMM, p239). Granted the p = 0.09 and the SU.VI.MAX study showed no such thing, but it made use of 4 supplements besides selenium in the intervention group. His use of relative risks (RRs) instead of absolute risks, despite showing how misleading RRs can be, is disappointing, but can be accepted when the direction of an intervention is shown to be opposite of the conventional expectation. There are some problems with the chemistry of unsaturated fats (p145). His description of blood alcohol levels and chance of collisions while driving did not mention that people unused to alcohol will drive poorly with much lower concentrations than the USA's vaunted 0.08%, while long-term alcoholics will only perform their best driving with much higher concentrations (p234ff). Colpo is more sanguine about exercise than I (MMM, pp144-161), but is careful not to recommend extreme exercise. None of this really detracts from a generally accurate work.

Colpo is very direct, working up finally to this Conclusion (p254): "There is every reason in the world to encourage people to exercise frequently, stop smoking, eat minimally processed foods, and find ways to get a handle on the stresses of modern life. The evidence for low-fat diets, on the other hand, is based on a mixture of erroneous assumptions, half-truths and downright lies."

Review of No More Bull!: The Mad Cowboy Targets America's Worst Enemy: Our Diet (Paperback)

The Mad Cowboy rides again! The long-awaited continuation of his rants and raves on veganism and politics comes through as madcap as ever but with a smart edge that promises to leave a trail of vegan converts. We all know someone who went vegetarian after reading Diet for a New America, and Howard Lyman is threatening to become the next John Robbins, with an endearing smile and naughty wink. No More Bull is a Howard Lyman hit.

The infamous cattle rancher-turned-vegan has a no-holds-barred writing style that occasionally smacks of his mischievous speaking style. I envy his matter-of-fact manner and I'd hate to find myself debating him, but I count on him to tell it to me straight. As a fan familiar with his speaking style, I often hear his co-writers in the pages of No More Bull, as if two others are sitting with Howard and me over coffee discussing veganism. Their writing styles gel together well.

Lyman doesn't mince words when he addresses meat-eaters in the chapter "Message for My Meat-Eating Friends":

"To state the obvious: vegetarians live longer than meat eaters simply and solely because we do not consume the filthy, fatty, disease-ridden, decaying flesh of animals. (Forgive me for being so blunt, but there is no such thing as a clean, lean form of meat, and no other honest way to describe meat - even if you buy it "organic," or blessed by rabbis, or hunt it down yourself.) Vegans live longer still because we avoid as well the fatty, hormone-rich, cholesterol-ridden by-products of the lactation of other major mammals."

Simple as that, my friends.

His call to arms comes in the next chapter - "Message for My Fellow Vegetarians and Vegans." Referring to milk as "liquid meat," Lyman asks "for those of you who are still merely vegetarian and not yet vegan, I ask, what in heaven's name are you waiting for?" He's endearing, nonetheless, not obnoxious, though some vegetarians might take offense if they understandably feel singled out.

Lyman pushes the point that herbivores shouldn't feel like they're saving the world through their food choices. It's not good enough to hide out and have meals with other vegans. Talk to children, talk to schools, invite omnivores over for vegan dinners, question authority, stop preaching. "You're better off serving the seitan stew than preaching the gospel of animal rights."

Unlike many recent books on veganism and health, Lyman doesn't discuss the tragic conditions of factory farmed animals. "People either feel for animals or they don't; while I believe they ought not be shielded from seeing what a slaughterhouse looks like, and the conditions in which their 'food' animals exist, I also think it serves no purpose to browbeat them over animal rights. If you must browbeat them, do so about their health."

Luckily, there are many voices out there describing slaughterhouse conditions. I'd personally eat white rice and cauliflower for every meal if it meant helping to prevent animals from experiencing such suffering. To me, health reasons pale in comparison to animal rights issues in my own personal vegan path. Lyman trusts that the average person is much more focused on their health, and he's left the environment, disease and political manipulation outside his scope.

Half of the 200-page No More Bull is recipes - great recipes from the likes of Neal Barnard, T. Colin Campbell and Frances Moore Lappe', among many others. I enjoyed Bryanna Grogan's Vegetarian "Meat Loaf" and Joanna Samorow-Merzer's Stuffed Eggplant, but the main event of this book isn't the star-studded recipe section. The highlight is Howard's convincing words.

He has seen the insanity of the meat and dairy industries first-hand. As a fourth-generation dairy farmer and cattle rancher, he's one of environmentalists' greatest resources in terms of exposing the truth of chemical fertilizer use, health side-effects of meat and dairy consumption, and the political nightmare we've become caught in like quick sand. In the genre of bold, inspirational books about veganism, Lyman's voice can't be ignored.

John Robbins' review of No More Bull encourages, "If you read this book, several things will happen. There will be more health in your life. There will be more joy in your life." Indeed, in today's sad, troubled world we could all use Lyman's humorous, honest, unapologetic words. --Caity McCardell

Review of 100 Weight-Loss Tips that Really Work (Paperback)

I am overweight and I needed a book that, in simple language, will guide me on the appropriate strategies to bring me to "normal" weight. After an exhaustive search, I came across this book and I have never regretted my decision to buy it.

I found the book easy to read and follow and the tips really make sense. I then went about implementing the advice given and it works for me. The book does not suggest quick fix solutions that often do not work and disappoint you but rather provides a methodical approach on what to eat and not to eat, how to effectively burn the fat through simple exercises like walking. The book also dispels many diet and exercise fallacies.

The only drawback with the book is that the author repeats himself often. This is not a major problem, however, as the repetition serves to remind the reader of the main points highlighted before.

Well, I have managed to lose 4 Kg in the past six weeks and I am on target to lose an extra 8 Kg to bring me to a normal, healthy weight with minimal risk of weight related diseases such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease or diabetes.

Review of The French Diet: Why French Women Don't Get Fat (Hardcover)

In the wake of Mireille Guiliano's runaway best selling lifestylememoir, "French Women Don't Get Fat,"French dieting guru Michel Montignac reformats his popular "Montignac Method" for an American audience and renames it "The French Diet: The Secrets of Why French Women Don't Get Fat."His secret?Eat real food with a low average glycemic index.

Anyone familiar with Montignac's theories which were rather flagrantly adapted over ten years ago by the creators of the Sugarbusters regime and Suzanne Somers' Somersizing system and worked over to create million dollar dieting empires replete with how-to books, recipes, web sites, food products and a variety of other spin-offs including teeth whitening agents, will appreciate this compact volume that spits out the dieting principles in a minimum of pages, succinctly explains why the diet will work for life and facilitates even the most unimaginative dieter with complete menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner with accompanying recipes.

In the mid-eighties, Montignac wrote "Dine Out and Lose Weight," in sympathy for business people everywhere like himself that had gained too much weight from heavy business dinners and couldn't see a way to remain polite without the need of going up a waist size.Simply stated, he forbid the consumption of high glycemic carbohydrates with fats and proteins, explaining that the insulin release from increased blood sugar levels stores the fats ingested rather than burns them for energy.Montignac Method meals then, were either carbohydrate based or protein/fat based.Only on the maintenance phase of the diet were some lower glycemic carbohydrates allowed to ride side-car with their fattier macronutritional counterparts.Strictly forbidden on any phase were the usual suspect high-glycemic demons of sugar, white flour and other processed foods.

In "The French Diet," Montignac no longer seems caught up with adhering to his former strict dichotomy between carbs and fats. Now refreshingly, he turns his attention on the concept of GO or glycemic outcome as an explanation of the so-called French Paradox.Roughly speaking, GO takes an "average" look at the glycemic index of the entire meal, rather than its individual components. For example, eating a potato (admittedly a bad example as potatoes are forbidden on phase 1) with a high GI should be balanced with the consumption of really low glycemic, high fiber vegetables, keeping the entire GO to a level of 50 or less. For Montignac, keeping a meal at a GO level of less than 35 will result in weight loss.Anything above 50 will start packing that fat back into its favorite storage location -- your abdomen.

In addition, he throws out standard nutritional definitions categorizing carbs as either slow of fast burning, refuses to believe that caloric input and output (in the form of exercise) monitors weight loss or gain and adheres strictly to the premise that selecting foods based on their nutritional value and the effects they have on metabolism is the secret to maintaining one's weight for life.Under Montignac's plan, carbs are no longer public enemy number one and fats, the bad boys of the AHA regime are, no surprise, great if they are either omega 3 or monounsaturated fatty acids-saturated fats are used sparingly and trans fats are a no-no.As expected, proteins should be selected by origin - the best choices, of course, being fish, chicken, turkey, etc.Foods labeled as `funky'(combinations of carbs and fats like nuts and tofu) by similar food combining plans are thankfully no longer `funky' on this one.

If you thought "French Women Don't Get Fat," fun to read, but contained little dieting tenets, you will like Montignac's "The French Diet".His easy-to-understand format feeds into the American need for empiricism withjust enough layman friendly science backed by hard facts and medical studies. The bottom line? Following a balanced diet of real food while tweaking the glycemic index to your best interest puts all current dietary fads to shame.

Product Description
The French have the lowest average body weight per capita in the western world, and yet they eat famously well.Montignac explains in The French Diet that this not only has to do with which foods the French choose to eat, but their quality, freshness, and most importantly, the way that they are combined.Although the book is based on the concept of glycemic index (GI), which other diet books discuss, The French Diet is the only book that provides the net GI values of combined foods.Already a phenomenon for years in Europe, Montignac's dieting methods have been helpful to tens of thousands of people around the world who have achieved impressive and long-lasting results and reduced their risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The diet has also found a celebrity following among devotees like singer Kylie Minogue and fashion designer Christian Lacroix.

Written for a range of readers, from those who dine out frequently, to yo-yo dieters, to those who don¹t want to give up wine or "the good life" but who do want to lose weight, The French Diet reveals the secret to living, eating, and looking like the French with this delicious, deprivation-free diet.

Review of GO-Diet, The Goldberg-O'Mara Diet Plan (Paperback)

I have every book on low-carb diets that has been printed, but this onemakes the most sense. After another low-carb attempt my cholestrol, etc.tests showed increases. Scary, very scary to me. This diet raises themonounsatured fat, lowers carbohydrates, increases fiber and isnutritionally balanced with normal protein levels.(Just as the coverstates.)The weight is coming off, as with other low-carb attempts, butthe blood test numbers are better and that is what we all aim for, right? The most encouraging part for me is that the Go-Diet is wellbalanced....you can live with it for a lifetime, even with an occasional"slip".I should have read this book first.I would have saveda lot of money and wasted time. Written by intelligent and compassionateprofessionals.

Review of Carbohydrates Can Kill (Paperback)

One of the things that is most frustrating for people dealing with weight and health issues is that they don't feel like their primary care physician truly understands their problem. If only doctors and other medical professionals could go through all the experiences of trying to lose weight, deal with declining health, and attempt to eat as healthy as they want us to, then maybe people would feel more confident and inspired to do those things for themselves. That's exactly what Dr. Robert K. Su has done.

After years of toiling with high-carb, low-fat diets and struggling to figure out why his patients weren't losing weight and getting healthier eating that way, Dr. Su went on his own personal low-carb journey that led him to shed the pounds, greatly improve his health, and have an epiphany about why so many of his patients had such a difficult time with these issues over the years. His research showed him it was the carbohydrates they were eating that were quite literally KILLING them.

While most people erroneously think that your body somehow needs carbs to function, Dr. Su outlines brilliantly in his book that this is a bald face lie.The body actually needs fat and some protein, but there is absolutely no dietary requirement for the body to consume carbs.CARBOHYDRATES CAN KILL is an eye-opening book for anyone who is still caught up in decades-old thinking that fat is the enemy and carbs are your friend.Flip those two around and you'll see what Dr. Su sees--low-carb will work for you, too!
