Review of Lighten Up! Lose Weight!: A 10 Week Self-Hypnosis Program (Paperback)

Some good thoughts and ideas.But sometimes you have to decode what the author is trying to say because the editing and writing is so poor.The book seems more like a rough draft before corrections were made. It is full of dropped words, typos and sentences that seem to have been randomly cut and pasted together. Here's one example - the well-known scripture from Ecclesiastes is quoted as "a time to read and a time to sew", when the words are actually "a time to reap and a time to sow" - obviously totally different meanings.While such errors add some humor, they also distort or obscure what the author is trying to say, as well as show a lack of attention to quality.

The ideas for self-hypnosis are very basic - and mostly focused on affirmations.Some of the suggestions the author tells you to make to your subconscious mind could produce negative results, such as that sugar is a poison to your body.There are many types of sugars in many kinds of foods, including fresh fruits, vegetables and healthy carbohydrates.You definitely don't want to teach your body to react to sugars as a poison.

As a psychotherapist and healing facilitator, trained in various forms of clinical hypnosis I had hoped this would be a good book to recommend to my clients, but I cannot recommend it to anyone.I gave it two stars because some of the content is useful, and the author is well-intentioned.However readers should be cautious in the use of some of the suggestions/affirmations recommended. In general, any suggestion or affirmation that has negative wording or possible negative consequences should discarded.

I found this book very motivational and with many, many strategies that I can apply immediately to start losing weight.One on my goals for the new year is to lose 20 pounds, and I believe that by making a plan for losing weight and using this book as a guide, I will be successful.This book offers a step by step plan to lose weight and I believe that is what I need!I highly recommend this book for others to read.

I have lost over 150 pounds myself and kept it off for over 25 years now.I have read every major best selling book (and many not best selling) out over that time.I have read every magazine/newspaper article in that timeon weight loss. None have compared with this book.This book gives youthings it took me decades to learn by the "school of hard knocks"while it taught me a couple of new things as well.This book gives you thecurrent research findings like a scientist would, however, it gives it toyou in language you can understand (with references) and use.Theconfusion people have as a result of the major names in the "dietworld" (Atkins, McDougall, Ornish, Pritikin, Sears, D'Adamo, etc.) andtheir systems (zone, low carb-high protein/fat, low fat, calories don'tcount, 40-30-30 etc.) which seems like a "Tower of Babel" is madeunderstandable.The various medications and what they do for you includingbenifits and risks are made understandable. Review of Binge Breaker!(TM): Stop Out-of-Control Eating and Lose Weight (Paperback)

I have read several books on the subject, searching for a way to break free of this. The problem is that many books adopt one of two approaches: either one designed for bulimics, which I am not, or a view that food is an addiction and certain foods must be avoided for life.
This book takes a sensible and, most importantly, very doable approach - it doesn't ask you to monitor in written form, which can be quite a chore, but rather works on making you aware of your eating style and then overhauling it. Gradually, eating is normalized and the former binge foods are introduced - without leading to binges for me!! - so that your relationship with food slowly gravitates towards being "normal".
All in all, a great read, the one book that changed my life!

Review of The OC Diet Revolution: Revealing the Mystery of Weight Loss (Paperback)

This book is excellent. Not only does chazz dispel all the myths of diet fads and old wives tales, he brings weight loss back to the basics. The book explains clearly how losing weight consists of three components: Aerobic exercise, anaerobic exercise, and caloric intake.
I use to fall for all those fad diets and never see any results, after reading this book it was as though a light bulb went off. I highly recommend it.

Review of Everything You Need To Know About Fat Loss (Paperback)

If you ever wondered why that low carb diet eventually stopped working or why that 1,000 calorie a day diet does not work for very long, this is the book for you.

Understanding why your body chemistry does what it does is a revelation.

All these diet books just lead you on.Diets do not work long term.You have to eat every 3 hours, eat adequate protein and not too much carbs to lose weight.

Weight lifting is more effective for weight loss than aerobics!

Low carb diets shut down your thyroid long term.Many people stay on these things, get more irritable by the day and do not lose weight.

I enjoyed the scientific explanation of thermogenesis.I won't ever be hoodwinked again.

Feed your body right, lift weights.I hope the word spreads..

The only downside of this book is the author's complete unawareness of the word "affect".He uses the word "effect" throughout the book.It drove me nuts!

He also does not know about you're vs. your.I guess it is not his job to know grammar.The editor of the book should have read it instead of just doing a spellcheck.

Otherwise, a very good book.

I have to write a review for this book, I am actually losing weight!
It was very different, not your typical eat this 8 oz piece of chicken bla bla. Only one chapter of the book was about the "diet" which is not really a diet, he gives you a super simple technique to combine food, the rest was very useful info and very NEW. I usually force myself to read a book to help my health issues, this book I could not put down.
I appreciate the style of writing because it was like the author talking to me personally, I could really relate. I love that this guy is not your typical exercise guru who looks like he lives in a gym telling me to up my cardio. You can tell he has tons of experience with girls like me.

I read The Skinny Book and was amazed at how the author was able to break down all the factors that affect weight management into it's simple compenents and offer clear explanation to somebody like me that knows very little about the subject.I was not interested in a very long and drawn out book with too much detail.The Skinny Book is concise at 96 pages and gives all the information I needed to understand weight management better.

Review of The Best Kept Secret to Permanent Weight Loss (Paperback)

Being a physician for four decades doesn't necessarily mean you know very much about what it takes to produce "permanent weight loss." But Dr. Barnet Meltzer realized in recent years that his medical practice should be more about preventing disease from happening in the first place through deliberate strategies that target keeping weight under control while arming your body with the best nutrients to make you happy and healthy for a very long time. That's what this book encompasses.

Dr. Meltzer realizes that in order to change your weight and health you absolutely MUST make certain changes in your lifestyle, including adding exercise, making smart choices about the foods you consume, keeping insulin levels stabilized, allowing your liver to function at optimal levels, removing unnecessary stress from your life, and supplementing with the proper vitamins daily. I have been dieting for 25 years and am now down to 100 lbs. (my goal) due to calorie counting and exercising.I do get hungry and this book is my guide to what foods are good and bad and it is also a blueprint for my daily menus.
I think this is an excellent resource for the serious dieter.

Review of Weight Watchers Weight Loss That Lasts (Hardcover)

It's time we stopped fooling ourselves.Weight loss is a lifetime struggle.Diets that focus on restricting food until we reach our magic goal weight will not work long term.Magical thinking will not work even in the short term.

The message of this book is that weight loss is a product of reducing caloric intake below caloric expenditure.It focuses on real science and hard data.I found it extremely helpful in overcoming psychological barriers to weight loss.It also helped me understand the importance of a life long commitment to weight loss and healthy living.

If you want real facts instead of advertising fluff, this book is for you.

Review of The Fat Flush Plan (Hardcover)

I bought this book, along with the cookbook, on Amazon a month ago and followed the diet plan closely for the first two weeks (I lost 13lbs.) and loosely for another 7-10 days for a total weight loss of 27lbs.It is not the easiest diet to follow, as the flax oil tastes really icky and the flaxseed fiber supplement drink is equally hard to swallow, but if you actually do what the author suggests, you Will lose weight.What I found the most difficult was eating eggs without salt and topping my protein portions with the flax oil as suggested.I think (I cannot prove it with personal research), that flax oil is much the same as linseed oil.It's not the initial taste, but the lingering aftertaste that put me off.I did learn how to cut back on carbs, fats and sodium (it's amazing what you can do with mustard and hot sauce) and did manage to modify my long term dietary intake, but after a month, I wanted to taste a grilled steak with garlic salt and maybe even a touch of butter, not to mention a crusty bit of bread!If you are more committed and have more willpower than I do, you can really lose a significant amount of weight on this plan and alter your palate.I have maintianed my weight loss (except for 4 lbs.), which is probably water weight due to increased sodium intake) and am very happy with the plan.I did lose a good amount of weight and learned alot on how to control portions and refined carbs without any real discomfort.The cookbook has lots of really good recipes, most of which could be elevated to stardom with some off-limits additions of butter!The mock mashed potatoes, using cauliflower was a real hit in my household and is still something I will fix regularly.This is an effective but not entirely painless diet plan suited for someone with real dedication.I thank the author sincerely for the many pounds I lost initially and for the good advice that I continue to follow.It's worth trying, especially if you have 20+ lbs. to lose!

Through this book I could learn how to diet with no risk at all and also know a lot about how the chemicals in the body work. For me is an excelent guide for dieting.

Review of The Diet Myth: Why America's Obsessions with Weight is Hazardous to Your Health (Paperback)

I am aware that this book too only shows one side of the coin, and the repetition of the same accusations over and over made the read a little less exciting than possible, but WHAT was repeated were some revealing and scary thoughts about what people do with statistics! There is just no better instrument than bent data if you want to push a cause... and since the weight-health relation topic affects me personally, it made me really angry to read how I am declared sick and worthless and how people are handed the instruments to discriminate against me through fake interpretations of statistical data, that any 4th grader would look through... had someone only asked them.

Review of Dr. Gott's No Flour, No Sugar Diet (Paperback)

This book is full of good, common-sense advice about how to eat a healthier diet. If you're a person who eats a lot of fast food or junk food, this book will really help you make more nutritious choices. By cutting out flour and sugar, it forces you to choose less processed foods, which are naturally better for you as they usually contain a higher nutrition to calorie ration than processed foods, which are full of empty calories.

I especially like the recipe section. Everything i've made from the book so far has been delicious--seafood gazpacho, halibut baked with fennel and sun-dried tomatoes, roasted garlic salmon, pork chops with dried cherry reduction, spicy peanut sauce. Even the sugar-free desserts are delicious. I especially liked the lemon panna cotta and I'm looking forward to trying the strawberry crepes with dark chocolate sauce, too!

This book will definitely help you make better food choices, and it will give you lots of ideas for what to cook, too!

Review of No White at Night (Hardcover)

I'm a primary care physician in Seattle and I have treated hundreds of patients with obesity and obesity-related conditions (primarily metabolic syndrome, type two diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia).I have found fantastic success with low-carb diets for all of the above and in the past have recommended Atkins, South Beach, Protein Power, Sugar Busters, Neandrathin, you name it.....however I find that Dr. Gavin's book is extremely SHORT, EASY TO READ, AND MOST OF ALL, EXTREMELY SUSTAINABLE AS A LONG-TERM SOLUTION.

I really appreciate his book and recommend it highly.For some patients with extreme insulin resistance an even lower-carb approach is necessary, but for most people I think his advice is PERFECT.

Review of The Fat Burning Diet: Accessing Unlimited Energy for a Lifetime (Paperback)

Jay Robb's the FBD has succeeded where all the nutritionists, doctors, body-builders, weight trainers and fitness experts failed--He has perfectly detailed a health AND fitness plan that will help everyone at any level of wellness. The only very minor quibble I have with Mr Robb is that he should change the name of his book to--"The Fat Burning NUTRITION" rather than 'Diet'. The 'diet' word has connotations of deprivation whereas the plan is full of excellent and appealing menus. I strongly recommend this life-changing book as a beacon of light offering practical wisdom in a landscape which full of experts offering a few results from their own limited perspective and no useful plan. Jay Robb sees the whole elephant and delivers this mega-health plan in perfect working condition, holding nothing back!

Himself a professional personal-trainer, nutritionist and serious spiritualist, Mr. Robb writes in a non-fanatic, helpful and directly disarming way, tracing the reasons for fat-gain and what is needed for losing the fat. The narrative of his disabling pivotal experience with a hypoglycemic prelude to diabetes is chillingly shocking. His subsequent research leading to his complete recovery resulting in this diet plan is perfect for just about everybody. The current revised edition book gives a very useful section for managing diabetes through his diet plan.

The FBD incorporates sufficient scientific information in clear-cut simple terms that one can relate to without being overawed by it--Sometimes I found myself saying, 'Wow! My body can do all that?!' It gave me a new appreciation and respect for the amazing instrument the human body is, which can manage its wellbeing better if we follow a few very simple rules.

The key point of the FBD program are:
The body needs a high carbohydrate with low protein meal in alternation with low carb with moderate protein meal. In other words, alternate high-carb-low protein with low-carb-moderate protein on alternate days--Eating only 3 solid meals a day. (Once you've got your body's metabolism rolling, you can do alternate meals this way also). This is the core of the program.

The other two points are--Mild exercise (aerobics--walking, and some weight-training to boost metabolism and increase muscle strength) is recommended, as is very simple meditation time--here basically understood to spend time with ourselves without distractions. Each of these three make eminent good sense and are very do-able as encouragingly and confidently coached by Jay Robb.

After reading this book I got a number of insights into my own morbid overweight problem---the most important find was confirmation of my nagging feeling over the years that I felt better when I fasted frome cereals. I tried the simple diet test suggested in FBD--you fast completely (and honestly!) from cereals and their products for 3 days, then eat some on the 4th day and see if you feel hazy/ dozy/ fatigued/ gassy/ unwell!). This test confirmed that I was seriously allergic to gluten--I also experienced that the grains were also heavily contributing to my weight gain. (My personal observational note to those who are gluten allergic--you may also be egg-allergic so avoid eggs on the test days--add the eggs back to your diet a couple of days before trying the cereals--if there is no reaction then add the cereal and see if you have any symptoms.)

Another interesting find--The FBD has a requirement for a lot of fat-free yoghurt and I was hesitant because eating a lot of yoghurt in the past gave me uncomfortable bodyaches. I found that eliminating the cereals while having the yoghurt created no problems whatsoever and that all the symptoms I had attributed to yoghurt were in fact cereal-allergy symptoms--possibly compunded by the yoghurt. Without the cereals in the diet, yoghurt is great any time of day ornight.

Years of yo-yo dieting had made my metabolism slow while I kept gaining weight and feeling more ill as each season went by and turned into years and kilos of weight gain. (I am now in my fifties agewise.) I started the Jay Robb plan about 6 weeks ago. Upto that point I had beenfollowing bodybuilder Tom Venuto's 'Burn-the-fat' plan quite sincerely for almost 2 months and although I lost some weight, it was patchy; the greatest turn-offs were the need to eat 6 meals a day Caccording to a specific ratio of protein- carbohydrate- fat and to exercise and weight train fairly aggressively. Towards the end of it I found I gained about 1% body fat while losing about 3 kilos of weight overall--not good! With this plan my basal temperature was still at 97.2 degrees after 2 months--very low. In addition, the whole day was spent in anxiety worrying about havinf the 'balanced' meal every 3-1/2 hours--really a problem as the whole day one is meditating about food and balancing calories.

With the FBD there is no such problem and by following a few simple guidelines one can create a low-carb-moderate protein meal or high-carb-low protein meal anywhere and even in the restaurant.

Three days after starting the Jay Robb plan my basal temperature went up to 98 degrees, my body fluids pH levels started to become alkaline (very good!) and within a week my body teperature was upto an excellent fat-burning ideal 98.6 degrees! I have also lost almost four kilos of weight overall in the 6 weeks I have been on the FBD, as well as over 3% body fat (adding solid muscle gains)--which is super excellent.

An additional observation--the lipomas (fat-lumps) under the skin are vanishing and the skin and muscle -tone has improved dramatically.

I recommended this diet plan to a friend who had a diagnosed hypothyroid problem and suffered palpitations, severe bodyaches on eating yoghurt, chronic indigestions, acidity and diahrreas--diagnosed by the best gastro-entologists as infections for years and treated as such. Within ten days ALL palpitations, bodyaches, diahrreas vanished completely. They return only if wheat or rice is taken--millet and buckwheat is no problem; in 3 weeks the body temperature is now 98.4 degrees up from 97 degrees with major health gains. In addition to the FBD program I added to the diet virgin coconut oil (1-2 tablespoons)--I estimate that this helped to boost the metabolic rate more rapidly.

Two diabetics have tried this plan out with the approval of their physician and are doing extremely well in the few weeks they have been on it. Their medication has reduced significantly and their energy levels are boosted.

Review of The Sugar Solution Cookbook: More Than 200 Delicious Recipes to Balance Your Blood Sugar Naturally (Preventions) (Hardcover)

This book is not only a cookbook, but a meal plan and guide as well! For people like myself who desire to eat a well-rounded, nutritionally dense diet that is not overly calorie laden, this book is perfect.

The meal guide that is presented in the beginning of the book is so easy to use. It suggests healthy breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks (3 on most days) that accomplish the goals I mentioned above, all while keeping your blood sugar steady throughout the day. The menus suggest a nice combination of recipes from the book, convenience products and whole foods. It is very easy to use in that you can exchange meals from one day to the next to tailor your own tastes.

The recipes that I have tried have all been excellent! They are mostly very easy to prepare. The only ones I have not cared for have been the salad dressings. There is a tremendous variety in the types of foods used and suggested so that your taste buds will never be bored.

The one thing I have found, however, is that the menus do not provide enough calories to keep me full through the day. They typically range from about 1400 to 1550 calories a day, which would ideally result in a pound per week weight loss since that is about a 500 calorie per day cut from the average woman's diet, and 3500 calories make a pound (500 * 7 days). Honestly, I needed more, though. I was starving before dinner every day. I finally started doubling up the afternoon snack and was much more satisfied, and that still amounted to enough of a calorie cut for me to still lose weight. A man using this meal plan would most likely want to add more calories to it.

Mostly, however, I just love how healthy the eating plan is. No "diet" foods, just nutritionally dense foods to give you what your body needs to operate optimally. I do recommend this book to anyone who would like to eat healthy and just needs to be shown how, or anyone who doesn't have to time to plan a completely balanced menu everyday for themself.
