Review of Natural Bodybuilding (Paperback)

I use to bodybuild years ago and was discouraged by the drug use that was obviously there. After ten years I'm thinking about doing something I never quite accomplished; enter a show.I have a lot of books on the subject and I've read a lot through the years.I was so happy to see a book that was all about natural bodybuilding but I was still very skeptical.I've heard and read the term, "natural" from a lot of people but few have delivered. This book is clear and to the point and provides useful comparisons on the differences of natural bodybuilders to drug users. It explains how you have different limits than someone that uses enhancers.
I have a few books that I refer to whenever I'm trying to come up with a new program or if I just want to refresh my memory. When I read a book like this I will highlight certain key points.Things that I know will be good to look at when I go through the book again as a reference. This book is now filled with my highlights.
The paper quality is nice, which also makes for a good ref. book.

This book will be my guide for accomplishing my goal of a show.

Great book for any BodyBuilder!

Review of Eat To Win For the 21st Century (Paperback)

As a follower of the original Eat to Win diet, I was really impressed with Robert Haas and the information he laid out 20 years ago.The Eat to Win diet helped my performance in triathlons immensely.

I must admit, I strayed from this diet over the years, trying low-carb diets along the way.So when I found out that a new Eat to Win book was out, I jumped on it.What I found was an update to the same great ideas in a book that is not well layed out.

This diet still makes the most sense to me.Smaller portions of protein, low-fat, and high complex carbohydrates. However, it seems that Mr. Haas has an axe to grind with the authors of the low-carb diets, because he spends too many pages bashing them, and not enough pages describing his own ideas. There's no doubt that the low-carb craze made the original Eat to Win diet unpopular, what with the baked potato being one of its main staples! If Atkins made your bestselling book obsolete, you'd be mad too.I just wish he had kept most of his negativity to himself.People who go on diets are looking for positive words.

Secondly, readers looking for sample menus will be disappointed.Good and bad foods are listed, as are portion sizes. But unlike the original book, the reader has to be the creative one and design the diet to his or her needs. This may be a blessing in disguise since you're eating what you want to eat, and not what someone is telling you to eat.But there are a lot of people who pick up books with the attitude "just tell me exactly what to eat, and I'll eat it" who won't succeed with this book.

The other problem I have is that the recipes in the back of the book are arranged randomly with a fish dish on one page, and an oatmeal recipe on the next.I wish he had at least arranged them into breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The original book was much better organized.

Finally, the chapter on animal protein seems to be a ringing endorsement for switching over to a vegetarian diet. And his paranoia with Mad Cow disease may turn some people off.

Bottom line...like any diet book, read the good stuff, and ignore all of the excess garbage. If you can sift through Mr. Hass's low-carb grudges, there's a good diet waiting for you.

Review of Dr. David Katz's Flavor-Full Diet: Use Your Tastebuds to Lose Pounds and Inches with this Scientifically Proven Plan (Paperback)

The core concept of The Flavor Full Diet is one that has apparently been researched for quite a while, but few of us know of - that of "sensory specific satiety". This refers to the role of flavor, and specifically, many different flavors (sweet, salty, bitter, etc) combined in one meal causing our hypothalamus to be over-stimulated. The net result is that too many flavors increase our appetite and leave us wanting to eat more food, even if our stomachs are full.

I've always wondered why I feel still feel hungry after eating several different courses, or at family gatherings during the holidays. Now I have the scientific reason behind my cravings and am learning how to curb my appetite by sticking closer to one "flavor category."I can still enjoy sweet foods, for example, I just try not to eat them after a salty meal.

Dr. Katz makes the concept very easy to understand and with his wife Catherine, have supplied some great recipes that are easy to make. Though I don't have kids, the recipes seem quite family friendly - and as the book doesn't limit what you eat, only how you eat it - I think this eating plan will be very attractive to people.

I deeply respect Dr. Katz' work, as he is one of a few leaders in this industry that is not just writing books on how to improve your health, but is advocating through research, policy and program initiatives to improve health across the nation. Thanks Dr. Katz for an excellent book!

Review of Conscious Eating (Paperback)

This book is one of the best health books I've ever read, no question about it.It combines pretty much every diet fad you've ever heard about into a raw, living food diet.
In this book, Cousens teaches us how to follow the Ayurvedic principles through a 80-90% raw food diet.He also teaches us how to individualize our diets for our metabolic body types. This is one of the only books I know that teaches how to individualize diet for a vegetarian.
The book covers religion, meditation, toxins in our environment, and has a nice living foods recipe section in the back of the book. The nice thing about it, is that with the recipes, he doesn't try to offer dishes that are similiar to those which are cooked.I see a lot of vegetarian recipe books doing that."Try our delicious all vegan pizza!" and of course, it tastes no better than a branch off of the Maple tree in my back yard. These recipes offer new tastes.
I like a particular section in the book where Cousens tries to explain the logic behind why people think he looks much more unhealthy now than when he did when he was a bulky college football player. We live in such an obesce society, that someone of a healthy weight appears too slim, or unhealthy.Because Cousens doesn't have a pot belly, and sagging male breasts, many people say he looks "thin and puny".This book teaches us thatthrough living foods, we can sculpt and shape our bodies pretty much any way we'd like.He chooses not to be muscular anymore, because he feels he has no need for 30 extra pounds of muscle. Steven Arlin on the other hand, is 230 lbs, and likes to feel big and strong.
All in all, this book takes you on a journey through the fascinating world of raw, living foods. It could change your way of thinking.

Review of The Jerusalem Diet. Guided Imagery and the Personal Path to Weight Control (Paperback)

In Jerusalem there lived and taught for many years a therapist of international reputation Colette Aboulker-Muscat. Her teachings in the area of guided imagery form the intellectual basis of this present work. This work aims to provide amethod for enabling individuals toachieve an image of themselves which corresponds with their own true nature and ideal.
The method which is amply illustrated in this work is through the technique of guided visual imagery. Over forty exercises are provided in the text aimed at enabling each of the readers to come to term with the self they want to be.
Besserman , a psychoanalytic therapist with a Ph.D. from Rutgers University,is responsible for the parts of the book dealing with the practical implementation of the method. Her co- author Emily Budick, a Professor of English at Hebrew University, provides the more theoretical and philosophical basis for the book.
The book has at its heart prescriptions for achieving and maintaining weight loss and a new approach to confronting the issue of self - identity through guided imagery.

Product Description
This is a book about why we eat, and why we diet; why we overeat and then deprive ourselves; why, finally, we fail to feed and satisfy the person we really wish ourselves to be. This is not a diet book in any conventional sense of the word, even though it contains many practical tips for losing weight and maintaining weight loss. Rather, it is a book about appetite. It is about our appetite for life, and how we can maintain it, drawing on the tools of guided imagery taught by Jerusalem psychotherapist and spiritual guide Colette Aboulker-Muskat.

Review of Marilu Henner's Total Health Makeover (Paperback)

The first time I read this book and was introduced to the concept of food combining, it sounded unrealistic and impossible to follow. I tried it for about 2 days and gave up. About a year later, when diagnosed with aninternal Candida imbalance that was causing lots of chronic healthproblems, my doctor suggested I follow a special diet that included foodcombining. So I got out Marilu's book and read through it again. This timeI stuck with it and found that much of her nutritional suggestions mirroredthat of anti-Candida plans; i.e., no dairy, food combining, no sugar orartificial sweeteners, etc.I was a fairly healthy eater to begin with butof course a major change in diet takes determination and time to adjust.Let me assure anyone out there that this book is full of good informationto start you on a path to total wellness, inside and out. While some ofthe presentation is a tiny bit corny, it's also approachable and it'sinteresting to see the road she, herself, was on in terms of bad health andwhere she is now.
Since making the decision to stick permanently withfood combining (which can be complicated but she presents in a very easy tofollow, organzied way) and eliminating sugar (about as hard for some peopleto do as quitting smoking or drinking) I have never felt better. My Candidais under control, my chronic ailments (asthma, allergies, rashes, jointpain) have all but disappeared, I have tons of energy all the time, I sleepbetter, I look better (better skin, hair, body) I feel consistently in agood mood and a nice side benefit was dropping from a size 12 to a 6.
After nearly a decade of struggling with my weight and being"sickly" I am now strong and truly healthy and found that onlywhen I focused on my health rather than my size did I lose weight. I am nowgoing back to college to obtain a degree in Kinesiology specializing inAthletic Training, a lifelong dream I never would have thought I couldpursue in my prior condition. You need to be inspirational to train othersand certainly you have to walk the talk.
With all the other fads beingtauted out there, like the Atkins diet which is completely nutritionallyunsound and puts people at a risk for renal failure and seriousdehydration, I can tell you that the reason plans like Marilu's aren't aspopular is ause they are more difficult initially to get accustomed to anddon't allow for taboo foods as much as the hi-pro/hi-fat phenomenon. Thismay be a tougher challenge at first, but the long term health benefits arelimitless.
I have read and reread everything from the Zone, Atkins, macrobiotics, sugar-busters and the blood type recommendations (which areactually very similar and is also a great book to keep as a nutritionalbible) and it's Marilu's book I find myself whipping out for reference orreview.
If you buy this book and stick with it for a month (it takes atleast that long to remove prior waste product from your blood stream, tissues and organs) you WILL feel a sense of total health and well beingthat will amaze and surpise you. It's a great investment in yourself andthe better your body functions, the better the quality of your life.

Review of The Best Life Diet Revised and Updated (Paperback)

If I could have ranked this book 4 1/2 stars, I would have.It contains solid information that would certainly benefit anyone and lead to slow and steady weight loss, but I would take off 1/2 a star since none of this information is groundbreaking or innovative. What I do like about this book, compared to Bob Greene's previously released Total Body Makeover book, is that this program is more doable by someone who has a life outside the gym, which is extremely important, since many Americans go on diets, but very few stay on them.

The program is divided into 3 phases. The first phase is basically designed to ease you into a program of healthier eating habits (focused more on the habits, like snacking, not eating within a few hours before bedtime, etc., rather than on limiting foods) and increased movement.Nothing extreme here - I like this aspect of this phase, as for most people, starting right up with a perfectly clean diet and an hour or more of exercise each day is too much (hence my problem with Greene's Total Body Makeover). The second phase is the real weight-loss phase with increased emphasis on "clean eating" by eliminating 6 empty or problem foods from your diet.Again, I like this approach because it makes it much more doable than cutting out all of your bad habits (I'm assuming that most of us have more than 6 - I certainly do) cold turkey.Increased activity is also an important aspect of phase 2.Finally, phase 3 is the "lifestyle" phase of the diet, which is more a lifetime fitness and eating plan than a diet.Recommended daily eating plans (including a 7-day diet diary of Oprah), and some tasty recipes (with lovely photos) are also included.

Finally, as with all of Bob Greene's books, there is direction for focusing in on your reasons for overeating, being overweight, and eating the wrong foods, i.e., the "emotional eating" aspect of weight problems.I particularly agree with Greene's assertion early in the book that in order to address your weight, you must first address your life.I know from my own experience, that when I find myself eating poorly, or eating in excess, or not exercising consistently, it is because of what is going on in my head, and not what is going on in my body.

Ultimately, I think this book is a great addition to one's health and fitness library. In my opinion, it takes the best of Bob Greene's earlier books and puts them into one, concise and doable program, which will provide weight loss and weight management that lasts and not merely a quick and temporary fix.

Product Description
From the bestselling author of Get With the Program! and Bob Greene's Total Body Makeover comes The Best Life Diet, a lifetime plan for losing weight and keeping it off. Bob Greene helped Oprah achieve her dramatic weight loss, and he can help you too. You'll eat the same delicious food that Oprah enjoys, and, just like Oprah, you'll have Bob to encourage you at every step. Unlike a celebrity, however, you don't need to hire a staff of experts to aid and advise you, because Bob's plan, easily tailored to an array of tastes, lifestyles, and activity levels, acts as your personal trainer and private nutritionist. Just open the book and let Bob help you get started down the path toward your best possible life.
What sets Bob apart from all the other experts who claim to have plans that work is that he admits that weight loss is difficult: seventeen years of watching people struggle to lose weight on a seemingly endless string of trendy crash diets, only to backslide and regain the pounds they've shed, have taught him that dropping pounds is not simply a numbers game. By acknowledging that it is not simple laziness but a complicated web of social rituals, cultural expectations, and habits that drives people to gain weight, Greene is able to attack the problem of weight loss realistically and offer not a short-lived, quick-fix formula, but a long-term program that accounts for the challenges and constraints of the real world.
Divided into three phases, The Best Life Diet gives you the tools you need to change your life. In each phase, you'll be asked to reexamine the decisions you make on a daily basis and gradually alter your habits to achieve lasting results. The book also includes easy-to-follow meal plans that make it simple to meet your daily energy and nutrient requirements, whether you are on the run and breakfast means a quick smoothie or you have time to shop for fresh produce and make something special.
You'll watch the weight disappear as you learn to prepare festive and flavorful dishes like Fire-Roasted Tomato-Shrimp Veracruz, Chicken Sausage Jambalaya, or Flank Steak with Chimichurri Topping and indulge in desserts like Roasted Peaches with Ricotta and Almonds or Apple Rhubarb Walnut Crisp. And for each delicious recipe, there is a detailed nutritional analysis, so you know exactly what you are eating and how it fits into your personal eating plan.
Most important, Bob's plan doesn't end once you've lost the weight. Instead, it gives you the tools you need to make living your best life second nature, because for Greene, a diet is not something you go "on" or "off" but a set of guidelines that will help you claim the life you deserve.

Review of Food for the Soul: Traditional Jewish Wisdom for Healthy Eating (Paperback)

The first part of this book, which is not exactly a cookbook, discusses food and the Jewish philosophy as related to eating. Then there is a long discussion of healthy diet (One of my non-Jewish friends out and out told me she thought traditional Jewish cuisine was probably one of the most unhealthy she'd ever run across. I thought about pot-roasted brisket or noodle kugel, laden with butter and eggs, and well, I didn't exactly jump up and protest.)

So who is this book directed to? I suppose it is aimed at anyone eating a glatt-kosher diet with traditional recipes from Bubbe (grandma) and who hasn't found a way to update these traditional foods.

Jewish cooking has kind of a split personality these days; the Eastern European foods come out of a diet of deprivation in a cold climate (or as a friend puts it, where cabbage boiled in duck fat is considered a green, leafy vegetable.) But more recently, Jewish cookbooks have added the Mediterranean/Middle Eastern foods and healthier foods of the Sephardic Jews, who eat chick peas, cous-cous, lentils, and more vegetables in general. The biggest culprits of fat-laden dishes may be pareve (non-meat or milk) and "milchig" or dairy-based dishes. When creating a menu, the foods are either meat-containing and neutral, or dairy-containing and neutral, which means no meat lasagna with cheese or pizza-with-pepperoni, by the way.

Some updated recipes in the back include Sephardic red lentil soup (rather like Turkish red lentil soup) and matzoh brei with asparagus (fried soaked flat cracker-like bread; matzoh can be used as a pasta substitute during Passover.) Also a matzoh lasagna. Hints are given on how to reduce fats and salt in traditional foods.

This is a thoughtful book, probably aimed at those who live in a community where traditional Kosher cooking rules supreme and where change must be weighed against a strong tradition going back for hundreds of years.

Product Description
With the information included in this book, you will be well equipped to make healthy food choices and prepare nutritious meals for you and your family. Food for the Soul: Traditional Jewish Wisdom for Healthy Eating addresses nutrition and health from a Jewish perspective. The nutritional information is universal, but tailored to the Jewish population's specific needs; kashrut, lifestyle, Shabbat and holidays, fast days and the unique Jewish culture of food.

Review of The Dakota Diet: Health Secrets from the Great Plains (Paperback)

Dr. Weiland has written a most informative and interesting book. It is well written, easily understood and packed with information on nutrition and itsinfluence on our health. The Dakota Diet places a strong emphasis on disease prevention and fitness through a healthy diet and exercise. This is no "magic pill" diet.He recommends lifestyle changes and lays out a plan for the reader to achieve their health and fitness goals. Recipes are included which have been contributed by chefs from the Dakotas. Many include the use of game as well as whole grains and fresh produce. Game may not be easily obtained in some areas, but I have noticed the availability of ground bison in supermarkets in the northeast. The recipe from chef Jill Maguire for Buffalo Burgers produces a fantastic meal! There is information presented on a web site where the reader can order grass-fed buffalo meat.

Product Description
You may have tried numerous diets over the years in an attempt to lose weight, only to regain the pounds after going off the diet. The problem with popular diets is that they are not nutritionally sound. "The Dakota Diet" is different--it is a way of eating that provides you with nutritionally satisfying foods to help you lose weight, improve your cholesterol levels, and add healthier years to your life. The foods that the Plains Indians hunted and gathered were rich in healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Today, our diet contains low levels of omega-3s and is loaded with omega-6s. As we forage at the grocery store, the foods we bring home contain up to 20 times more omega-6s than omega-3s. Omega-3 fats counter the unhealthy effects of omega-6s and are found in abundance right here in America's backyard, on the plains of the Dakotas."The Dakota Diet is not a fad diet; it can help you rediscover the benefits of healthy fats and enjoy hearty American foods while losing weight and improving your health. It is high in good omega-3 fatty acids found in abundance in flax seed, soy, buffalo, fresh fish, and wild game. The diet focuses on nutrient-dense, low-calorie foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. The meat is from animals that are allowed to graze on grasses, such as buffalo, which has less fat and fewer calories than meat from grain-fed animals. And, the diet is also high in soluble fiber found in beans, barley, and oats--foods that help balance cholesterol. This book will show you how to find and prepare wonderful foods full of healthy fats, featuring delicious recipes for grass-fed buffalo and wild game, vegtables, grains and salads straight from the prairie.

Review of The Formula: A Personalized 40-30-30 Fat-Burning Nutrition Program (Paperback)

"The Formula" is an easy to understand, easy to follow 40:30:30 cookbook. I like it better now than when we began. I want to personally thank the Daousts for their work.
I wrote an anonymous review from Redondo Beach after my first week. It's now been eight weeks. I'm 6 feet tall and was 221 pounds. I have lost 22 pounds. My goal is to reach 180. I broke 200 this past weekend. By the way, I have not exercised at all. Perhaps pounds do come off easier when starting out 40 lbs over, but they are coming off.
My doctor told me three years ago, "Lose 30 lbs and lower your blood pressure. Goodbye." No suggestions, no help. Almost by accident my wife saw The Formula mentioned on TV. It looked "balanced." We tried it.
The 40:30:30 system works and is painless weight loss. Yes, protein sources such as 2% cottage cheese, lowfat cheese, chicken, beef and whey are somewhat expensive. We have had to re-learn shopping. We shop the perimeter of the market, not the inside aisles. We have re-learned cooking and eating, too. Yes, 40:30:30 is low calorie. That's the point: low calorie without hunger. How else are you going to lose weight? The difference is that I don't want to go off this diet. It's simply a better way to eat.
It's more than weight loss, though. With more study, I find this diet is really about controlling hormones, not calories (see "Entering The Zone," by Dr. Barry Sears, to understand the theory behind the practice in this book). At age 49 and 40 lbs overweight, I had around 164,000 calories stored. (9 cal/gram of fat.) How to get that fat to burn off? 40:30:30 controls glucose/blood sugar levels, which in turn controls insulin levels. With insulin under control, another hormone, glucagon, can come into play. This hormone tells the body to burn fat. It releases the stored fat energy. As long as I am burning that fat, I don't feel hungry and I am losing weight, even at night, even without exercise.
The gentleman who only had a few pounds to lose and complained he didn't lose anything in a week might have overlooked what was actually going on in his body: reduction of body fat and the build up of lean muscle mass. This can happen when one is exercising, which he was. When put on this diet, professional football players actually gained as much as eleven pounds, but reduced the percentage of body fat. They became leaner, stronger, faster and more agile. One man started the diet at 190 and never lost a pound. He had to buy a new wardrobe, though, because he leaned out. He looked great.
For me, my mood is better, I handle stress better, I sleep better, I have less intestinal gas (better digestion) and my blood pressure is normal. I have increased energy, need less sleep, and rise early on weekends ready to go instead of taking most of the weekend to recover from the week's stresses. I feel as if I've been given many additional years of active life.
Does it require cooking and prep? Yes. Good food doesn't just happen. It takes some work. Is it a burden? No. My wife felt she was going to lose me unless we did something. She views this as a ministry to me, which I deeply appreciate. I have gotten into the kitchen, too. We are eating fruits, vegetables, lean meats, dairy-all good stuff. We don't miss the pizza and white bread. It's fun baking good food. It's better than staring at some lamebrain TV sitcom, which is what I was doing because I had no energy. What's more, I know the food we prepare is exactly right for us and tastes great. Consider another angle: we in America have every food we need, in high quality, available at good prices all year long. It's right there in the store. That is an amazing blessing. Take advantage of it.
Look--you can find dozens of reasons to stay fat. "I don't have time." "If we had a personal chef, I'd do it." "I refuse to give up some foods." "I don't like to shop and want the food to jump into my mouth by itself and still want to look like a movie star." If you like it that way, fine. All I know is that I have to buy new clothes because everything I have is too large. I also have people (especially women) asking me what is going on and how I lost so much weight so fast. I print out a copy of this ... page and give it to them.
The method is in The Formula and several other 40:30:30 cookbooks. The theory is in Dr. Sears' works on The Zone. The information you need is there. You don't need magic potions. You don't need exercise equipment. You don't need appetite suppressants. You don't need a cabinet full of supplements. You don't need liposuction.
What you need is recipes for each meal and each snack that give your body the right portions of carbohydrates, fat and protein it needs for peak performance--not too much food, not too little.
This book is a great start. The rest is up to you.

Review of Carbohydrate Addict's Carbohydrate Counter (Paperback)

This book has been a handy reference for us as my son just started using an insulin pump BUT... there is a dangerous error on the cookie page where they list the number of carbohydrates in ONE OREO as 33. The correct number is 8. My son ate three at a picnic recently, and if we had given him insulin to match 99 carbs instead of 24 we would have landed in the emergency room! Fortunately I noticed that listed right below the Oreo entry were entries for Fudge Covered Oreo and Double Stuff Oreo, both of which showed under 10 carbs. Lucky for us it was me doing the looking up, instead of a grandparent or other caregiver who might have simply followed the printed guideline! This misprint is a DANGEROUS error, and makes me question and check everything else I look up.

Review of The RealAge Diet: Make Yourself Younger with What You Eat (Paperback)

The connection between food and health is a strong one. Many diet-obsessed people overly focus on this one element of health though. This book builds from the RealAge research to help you change your eating habits in permanent, healthy ways. The book's weakness is that the recommended solutions require a lot of discipline to get started.
The book's conclusion that these changes will make you physiologically younger may well be a stretch. "To be honest, there's still a lot that scientists don't know about nutrition." That sentence is the most important one in the book. A new diet could be produced every year incorporating the latest research results, and each one would be different. I suspect that this continuing change in perceptions will go on for decades. So I suggest that you not take the results of any one diet book too seriously. Some of the key conclusions of each one will probably be contradicted in the future.
Nevertheless, this book is an attempt to point you toward eating habits that reduce diseases older people get more frequently and extend longevity. On the other hand, this book does not focus on appearance or weight level. Many people who read diet books are more interested in those two areas than longevity. If you are interested in another diet currently, this book probably reviews the other diet and gives you a rating for whether or not that diet will help extend longevity. The book is most positive about Eating Well for Optimum Health and Dean Ornish's Eat More, Weigh Less. The book's advice can be encapsulated as "Eat nutrient rich, calorie poor, and delicious." These foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, fish, and the right fats (eaten in moderation early in the meal). If you are familiar with books about nutrition, you won't find any big "'aha's" here. The main news is that eating fish seems to have benefits separate from eating the fats that are in fish. Now, I find that I feel a lot better if I eat fish 2 or 3 times a week. I suspect that listening to your body is often as reliable as the latest evidence.
Like many of the best books about nutrition and Sugarbusters!, this one warns about paying attention to glycemic levels of foods.
I did find its focus on calorie count to be questionable. The weight set-point for people differs a lot, and some people with slow metabolisms may find this approach just another painful way to be overweight. Calories do count, but picking your target is hard to do well. Spending a lot of time measuring calories will reduce consumption. If you have a high metabolism, the effort may well bring weight-loss rewards worth the effort.
The scientific references in the back of the book are impressive, but are not well connected to the text. You would have to do a lot of reading to find out what the research really says. I would like to have seen a closer connection between the footnotes and the text. Both Eating Well for Optimum Health and Live Right 4 Your Type are better in this area.
A clear conflict exists between this book and Live Right 4 Your Type. Both seem to be equally based on scientific research, except that Live Right 4 Your Type attempts to match the advice for your blood type. This book discusses the earlier book, Eat Right 4 Your Type, which does not closely match to research references. Based on my own experiences with both the average and the blood type adjusted approaches, I think the Live Right 4 Your Type method works better for me than the RealAge Diet.
If you have heart disease, you will have to modify some of those diets to reflect that by reducing fat (see Dean Ornish's Reversing Heart Disease).
If you are well read on nutrition, this book will not add much to your knowledge. If you eat poorly and have not read about nutrition, this is a fine book for you.
I would like to commend the section in the book on eating out. There are many good ideas for how to have your food prepared in healthier ways. Even if you know nutrition, you may find the book to be a valuable asset for this reason if you are passive in restaurants.
The book also advises doing a lot of your own cooking. That's not for me. The recipes looked too hard to me to be worth looking into. You may have a different reaction. If you do, enjoy!
After you read this book, you should also think about how much effort it is worth to extend your lifespan. If you spend 10 percent of your waking hours to expand your life by five percent, is that an accomplishment? Depending on how you spend your time, it may or may not be. For example, if you live enough longer than a cure comes along that extends your life by another 10 percent, you're ahead. If you enjoy working on this, you are ahead also. If you have more energy to give to others, you may be ahead also.
Also, you might want to check out Dean Ornish's Love and Survival where he points out that human relationships have more impact on disease and health than diet.
Make food a positive part of your life!

Review of The Complete Idiot's Guide to Low-Carb Meals (Paperback)

The book contains a reasonable number of recipes and lots of 'hints' that if you've done ANY reading about low carbohydrate eating, will be superfluous.

The recipes run the gamut of carb counts, though I thought that the bulk of them were much higher carb than is helpful.Following the suggestions in this book and the recipes, it wouldn't be all that hard to hit 80-100++ grams of carb per day... which is simply TOO HIGH for many people who are following low carb lifestyles.

Many recipes call for sugar, white flour, semi-sweet chocolate and cornstarch.Come ON... those are NOT "low carb" ingredients.

This is more or less a repackaged low fat/lower cal cookbook with "low carb" thrown on the cover to try to generate some market share. My copy is being donated to a charity, it isn't worth the space on the shelf for someone interested in real "low carb" cooking.

Product Description

Review of Saving Dinner the Low-Carb Way: Healthy Menus, Recipes, and the Shopping Lists That Will Keep the Whole Family at the Dinner Table (Paperback)

Making the adjustment to low carb has meant learning a whole new way to cook. Before I discovered this book, other recipes I've tried have been bland or required too much prep time.
Not this one. From the very first page, I was able to hit the ground running, since the book comes compete with WEEKLY shopping lists and recipes that take a short time to throw together but taste like they've taken all day to cook. We enjoyed Cube steaks with onion gravy, Thai Shrimp, Skillet Chicken Mediterranean and more.
Don't be scared by the "exotic" sounds of some of the recipes. This is family cooking, NOT something that you could only eat if you had the most refined of palates. If your kids aren't fish lovers, you might want to keep some simple alternatives on hand but on most nights, they should be able to eat the same menu as the "Low carbers".
ONE caveat - Some of the recipes are designed for a crockpot. I don't have one and I found it simple to adjust the cooking times. It was no big deal. But do keep in mind that at least one recipe a week is designed for a crockpot. Again, this wasn't a big deal to me, even without one.
In every other way, the book is perfect for our needs and we've branched out into newer, better recipes than before. Thanks, Leanne!
