Review of Good Food for Bad Stomachs (Paperback)

While Janowitz covers many digestive problems in this book, I was specifically interested in Chapter 12: What Should We Feed the Inflamed Intestine? Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease. He spends a great dealof time outlining a "low-residue" diet as well as a low-oxalatediet, both of which are purported to assist persons suffering from IBD. Since both diets are quite nutritionally sound, they are certainly worthtrying and his discussion on lactose sensitivity is one of the mostbalanced I've read. With only one chapter pertaining to IBD, it might bemore practical to request this book interlibrary loan rather than purchaseit, but if you have other family members with other digestive problems, theother chapters may have increased relevance and applicability!

Review of Sport Nutrition: An Introduction to Energy Production and Performance (Paperback)

The publisher's back cover text reads:

"Sport Nutrition: An Introduction to Energy Production and Performance is an introductory-level text that gives students a comprehensive understanding of the basics of nutrition as it relates to sport."

That is exactly what the book is, and what it does splendidly.

The book is comprehensive, and is a remarkable achievement for just two authors-generally such a book would be edited by one or two individuals and have numerous contributors.

The book has many illustrations and tables which help the reader's understanding and break up the text.

The book starts with the basics, the general principles of nutrition and fuel sources and goes on to discuss the physiology of digestion, the macronutrients, water, and the micronutrients. Discussions about supplements, weight management, eating disorders, and immune function round out the book.

The books scientific footings and information are solid, not faddish. The book is about theory and general practice. There is little information about current proprietary products.

Again, the book is a text for students of nutrition.

The wider market of athletes looking to improve their sport nutrition as a way of improving their performance may have to keep looking.

Although this book provides much depth missing from almost all such books directed to athletes, the practical take-home messages and key points are obscured by the details and are too difficult for most lay readers to easily grasp.

Although many will probably use this book as an authoritative reference frequently in the future, unless college-educated with a science background, or extremely persistent, lay athletes may put down the book before learning anything of practical use.

Review of Avery's Sports Nutrition Almanac: Your Complete and Up-to-date Guide to Sports Nutrition and Fitness (Paperback)

...It was pretty well buried and anonymous. For these reasons I thought I was probably taking a big chance in buying this book, and that ultimately, I would be disappointed. To the contrary, I have been pleasantly surprised. I still don't get why this isn't a runaway bestseller for athletes, but here's my take on the book. Pros: Extensive information on Carbs, Proteins, Amino Acids, Fats, Water, Vitamins, Minerals, Electolytes, Supplements and even ergogenic Herbs (there is no info on steroids). The strength, I find, in this book is its authoratative tone, and drilling down to reveal esoteric facts. The authoratative tone isn't just evident in the language [the book having been very well edited], but in the knowledge presented. As a strength athlete (bodybuilder) I already know some lesser known facts about nutrition. To have those lesser known facts presented to me in this book makes me trust all the other information in the book that I didn't know. We're not talking about fads or unproven, hyped supplements, but reliable info on which supplements are likely to help, and at what doses. The high-profile supplements are covered (e.g., creatine, ribose, tribulus terrestris, MSM, NADH, HMB, and many, many more), but in a way that is neither pro- nor anti-supplement. You get fair, unbaised opinion on whether the supplement works or not, with case studies cited. There's also an excellent glossary. And there's a very useful website appendix to further your investigations. Lastly, reference sources are cataloged. On the Con side: This is a nit, but there's a section on Who's Who in Sports Nutrition. I disagree with some of the entries, and didn't feel everyone had been covered, but, by nature, this is bound to be subjective; you may find it's just perfect. Also, there's advice sprinkled throughout the book that borders on a recommendation for certain supplements by brand name. I honestly don't think this is because of any tie-ins with the publisher or authors...mostly because they mention numerous and competing brands...but it is a little off-putting at first; at least until you let your guard down and accept it as honest opinion. Anyway, this is a tremendous resource for sports nutrition, and I especially recommend it for my brothers and sisters (there is much on female-specific nutrition) in the iron game. Naturals, in particular, should run...don't walk, to get this book.

Review of Nutritional Strategies for the Diabetic/Prediabetic Patient (Nutrition and Disease Prevention) (Hardcover)

I just picked up this book at ASPEN Nutrition Week after reading it at the booth for more than 30 minutes. I was choosing between Opara's "Nutrition and Diabetes" and this one, and I felt that Mechanick's book suited my needs more:
It was very easy to look up clinically useful info quickly, but then one could read on about the pathophysiology. Very well-researched and understandable, even for a clinical person like me. I also liked that it did not focus entirely on Diabetes, but also on pre-diabetes and lipid metabolism. Most of the book was written by MDs who practice clinically, which probably explains why it really hits the mark.

The wound-healing chapter by Breit is pretty neat, and it has good pictures showing the different stages and what happens when, and an evidence-based approach to what's out there.
There is a chapter on mitochondria that is surprisingly readable and clarifies a lot of underlying pathophysiology. The chapter on nutrition and hyperglycemia is very much to the point. I'm not going to go through all the chapters here, but there's something for every disease state related to hyperglycemia or insulin resistance and nutrition.

What I liked best was the lipid case study in the back. It really guides you through the decision-making process for the treatment of dyslipidemias.
The book is also very current, so there's all the new data and new concepts about DM and metabolic syndrome in there. I am not sure if it is going to be the "bible" on the topic (that's what the guy in the foreword said), but I found it very useful and quite addictive reading.

If you want a book that has all the current info on metabolic syndrome, diabetes and nutrition, this is probably the best-researched, most readable and most current option.

Product Description
While nutrition is central to the management of diabetes, there is no one “diabetic diet”. Nutritional prescriptions depend on the type of diabetes, food preferences, lifestyle, treatment regimen, comorbidities, state of health, and the route of caloric administration. Nutritional Strategies for the Diabetic/Prediabetic Patient is a comprehensive reference aimed at advancing physicians' knowledge of nutrition in relation to diabetes, allowing them to provide evidence-based recommendations for their diabetic patients. It also provides dietitians and diabetic educators with an in-depth understanding of the pathophysiology and medical treatment of diabetes.

Written by scientists, clinicians, registered dietitians, and certified diabetes educators, this book reviews the molecular mechanisms of disease and drug therapy. It also provides recommendations for management with the level of evidence indicated where appropriate. In areas where little research data is available, the editors present recommendations based on extensive clinical experience. The book places particular focus on the synchronization of nutrient intake with medications, and provides unique clinical management tools, along with details of their ability to be replicated for patient use. To facilitate accessibility, it features evidence-based technical reviews of clinical literature and includes numerous tables and figures, with color photos of wound healing stages.

Addressing all aspects of nutrition in adult diabetic and prediabetic patients, Nutritional Strategies for the Diabetic/Prediabetic Patient is an important referencefor those concerned with the dietary management of this disease.

Review of Peak Performance: Training and Nutritional Strategies for Sport (Paperback)

There are so many good points about this book I hardly know where to start. What impresses me most is that the authors have maintained a balanced and rational view on the many diverse and sometimes conflictinginputs - lab. tests, experience in the sport, folklore, practicalities -all of these impinge on the attitudes of athlete and coach, and can resultin a lot of confusion and uncertainty. The book does an excellent job inunravelling these tangled strands of knowledge and half-knowledge topresent the a clear and accurate picture to the reader. Uncertain pointsare made clearer, several myths are debunked (some of my own misconceptionswere cleared up). Yet where the truth remains hidden or is unclear this iscommented upon. Concerning scientific studies the source material isextensive and up to date.
The layout and language are so clear andreader-friendly, and the material so interesting that I found it hard toput the book down. However, I'd have to advise readers not to try to takein too much at a time.
The few inaccuracies in some of the detailsdidn't detract from the message or the overall quality. There is oneslightly surprising omission, namely the absence of any discussion of theConconi test for aerobic performance. Nevertheless, the sections ontraining are excellent; the ones on nutrition are even better.

Product Description
This is a text for coaches and athletes who want to improve their sporting performance via the application of scientific training and nutritional principles. It gives detailed, practical information on the principles of physical conditioning, and how these relate to explosive events (such as sprinting), endurance events (such as the Ironman triathlon) and team sports (such as rugby and soccer). A chapter on competition preparation has been included ("Getting it right on the day"), as well as an appraisal of scientific aids for athletes (heart rate monitors, altitude training, warm up and warm down, drafting and pacing, and hill training). The book includes contributions from leading coaches, who reveal the secrets to success in their events, and also look at what the future holds for athletes in the year 2008.

Review of PDR for Nutritional Supplements 2nd Edition (Pdr for Nutritional Supplements) (Hardcover)

As a long time consumer of Nutritional supplements and a believer in natural foods and vitamins, today's 2nd Edition of Dr. Hendler's PDR for Nutritional Supplements is a treasure trove of useful and meaningful information, data, and valuable research. As part of the large numbers of Americans currently supplementing their regimen with various vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients, Dr. Hendler has truly answered the need of providing a reliable, research-based source of information on these supplements. I particularly found the section on functional foods and drinks that condenses the chemical nature of the supplement, claims made for it, laboratory animal and human research, risks and precautions and doses extremely valuable.
Dr. Hendler approaches both claims proven and not proven, and the reasoning behind what and why it is disproved.
If you are interested in your own or your family's welfare, and you feel supplementation of your food sources is important, then you don't need to be a physician to find answers to questions of continued health, but it wouldn't hurt to recommend the PDR to your physician either after all.

Product Description

Review of Eating on the Run - 3rd Edition (Paperback)

I rarely recommend a book, but I'm feeling that I must now! The book is called Eating on the Run by Evelyn Tribole. This book brings weight management down to its barebones--you learn what your body needs as basic nutrition, how to eat and feel satisfied, the problems with diets and vitamins and how they can hurt you, dispels myths, and how to apply good eating habits efficiently w/o trading taste or satisfaction. You know me, I LOOOOOVE food but I'm just not much of a cook. And like everyone else, I'm just trying to figure out how to take care of my body.
This isn'ta cookbook, but there are several recipes throughout the book--many and enough to have you up and going with good eating habits. Since it is geared to busy people, it's an easy, straightforward read that really helps you to understand weight management and how to apply it. In other books, I usually learn a lot then forget it because it just isn't realistic.
The author has a regular column (Recipe Makeover) in Shape magazine, is the spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, and qualified for the 1984 Olympic marathon event. Therefore, she has the credentials.
So, in my most sincerist verve, I totally recommend reading this book as a way to change eating habits and understand weight management for yourself.

Review of Fed Up! : The Breakthrough Ten-Step, No-Diet Fitness Plan (Hardcover)

"The only effective means of protecting yourself from developing an eating disorder is to avoid diets that push you, both psychologically and biologically, toward a destructive new level of food restriction and weight preoccupation." - Wendy Oliver-Pyatt, M.D.

In Fed Up! Wendy presents a back-to-basics approach to healthy living. First, she dispels the myths associated with dieting and boldly declares:

"Dieting wreaks havoc on the mind, body and soul."

Dieting has failed us. Dieting preys on our insecurities. Scientific research indicates that dieters only succeed in weight loss 2% of the time. Dieting also leads to a tense and uncomfortable relationship with food. In fact, Diets can in fact encourage eating disorders.

In reality, the less I eat, the more weight I seem to gain. Wendy explains why this occurs! I'm a big fan of the Suzanne Somers' approach because I'm now a believer that it is not really how much you eat, but more the combination of what you eat and when. The only time I've ever lost weight and kept it off was when I was eating more food! Imagine that.

Personally, I think dieting is depressing and I'm happy to see Wendy saying that diets don't work. I don't have time to count all those silly calories and I get so stressed out trying to figure out how much of this, how much of that. I give up in a day.

With a diet, you know that all the weight you are trying so hard to get rid of is going to come back as soon as you go back to your regular routine. So it seems you should try to find balance and a healthy lifestyle that includes foods that are good for you and will encourage a healthy approach to eating. There are foods you should be eating to encourage health. Those foods are not discussed in this book. This book deals with eating from a psychological perspective.

Wendy also deals with the following questions:

Why do we allow the diet industry to get rich while we become overweight?
Do you have an eating disorder?
Why do we accept our cultural myths about dieting?
Are you addicted to exercise?
Is your weight gain related to a medical condition?
What effect does cortisol have on your body? Can the stress of being on a diet actually make you gain weight?

So, we are still hungry, we crave foods we are told are bad for us and we want to have the perfect figure and the perfect life. Wendy gives us a dose of reality by stating the facts.

Our society has presented a pleasing view of an unpleasant situation. Models are unhealthy. The images we see flashing across our screens, in magazines and on every billboard scream "Be like me," "I'm attractive," I'm what you want to be." Yet have you ever heard that some models lay in bed all day because they feel so sick and depressed they have no life besides modeling? I've heard these stories.

The advertising industry is doing more harm than good all while filling their pockets with our money. They are feeding off our insecurity, our desire to belong and be loved. America is obsessed with beauty. As Wendy points out, "Perfectionism breeds low self-esteem." The harder we try to become "perfect," the more "imperfect" we feel.

"With the advent of the mass media, however, women now find themselves being compared not just to the girl down the street, but also to the most beautiful (and often surgically enhanced) women in the world. It's no longer good enough to look normal'; instead, you need to look like Calista Flockhart or Demi Moore." pg. 35

Wendy gives us back a calm sense of control. She encourages the reader to achieve a sense of balance in their life through maintaining a healthy view of life.

While she encourages us to evaluate our own lives, she also explains what didn't work for her and what isn't working for millions of Americans. She herself struggled with an eating disorder for ten years.

Her purpose in writing "Fed Up!" is to encourage a "nationwide rethinking about whether dieting and maintaining mental lists of so called good and bad foods actually leads to long term health and weight management." She wants her readers to think seriously about the impact of cultural pressures and the pursuit of unrealistic beauty standards.

Wendy's book provides steps you can take to achieve a healthy mind and body. You will become more relaxed in your relationship with food and consider the psychological barriers to health and fitness.

The steps are:

Step One: Recognize Your Exhaustion: Is Food Preoccupations Running Your Life?

In this chapter, you can take a "Are You Exhausted?" Self-Inventory test. The results may surprise you.

Step Two: Reject the Cultural Myths That Make You Diet and Gain Weight

In this chapter you will find information on how to calculate your BMI (Body Mass Index). This will help you figure out what weight you should be as opposed to how much you weigh now. With a few simple calculations you will find out if you are actually underweight, a healthy weight or overweight.

Step Three: Decide That You Are Good Enough Today to Love Yourself Today
Step Four: Learn to Experience, Trust and Enjoy Hunger and Satiation
Step Five: Straight Talk about Exercise
Step Six: Get Your Doctor on Your Weight-Loss Team
Step Seven: Learn to Wait to Lose Weight
Step Eight: Break Through the Secrecy
Step Nine: Redefine Your Life: What's More Important to You Than Dieting?
Step Ten: Give to the Next Generation: Preventing Eating Disorders and Obesity in Children

This is not a book about fancy meal plans, supplements, exercise equipment, foods you should and should not eat. There are no diets in this book!

This book is about taking control of your mind and body. Wendy offers advice on how to develop an enjoyable, effective and sustainable fitness program. She also discusses how parents can help prevent eating disorders in their children.

"Fed Up!" shows you how to enjoy the primordial pleasures of eating
while focusing on how to avoid the modern madness of diets.

If you are ready to break free from the prison of dieting, this ten-step plan will help
you to control your eating, lose excess pound and maintain your ideal weight.

Inspirational and Insightful.

Review of Jane Brody's Good Food Book: Living the High Carbohydrate Way (Hardcover)

I've been using this cookbook for almost 20 years. Over that period of time the current, latest nutritional advice continues to change and contradict that which came before. But I still love these recipes and I'm still alive and not fat. [Those who don't eat too much and excercise seem to do OK.]
These recipes are tasty and easy to prepare. Jane's Turkey Carcass Soup is the best standard soup stock recipe I have ever found. If you actually enjoy vegetables - and don't need to approach them like medicine or something to force yourself to eat beacause they're "good for you" - then I highly recommend this book.

Product Description
From the nationally bestselling author of Jane Brody's Nutrition Book comes "the ultimate, reabable, understandable, practical, and useful book on how to live sensibly and well . . . a primer on the new nutrition and weight control" (Craig Claiborne). Review of Nutrition and Diet Therapy Reference Dictionary (Nutrition & Diet Therapy Reference Dictionary) (Hardcover)

I contacted Amazon.com to let them know that this book (the 4th edition) has almost 100 missing pages (all the appendixes). The book was replaced by another one with the same number of missing pages. I tried to contact the publisher (Wiley-Blackwell), and they make you enter your life story just to email them. The book presents great information, but unfortunately, it is a rip-off because the most important information is missing. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! RIP-OFF ALERT!

Product Description
Nutrition has long been the missing ingredient in the treatment of the various musculoskeletal conditions seen daily by the health professionals. The often-stated reason for giving nutrition short shrift is the lack of evidence. Responding to this need, Scientific Evidence for Musculoskeletal, Bariatric, and Sports Nutrition provides clinicians with an evidence-based integration of nutrition into medical treatment. Gathering biochemical information and presenting it in clinical terms, the book explores the link between fat, muscle, and bone tissue, and how nutrition can be used to enhance their metabolism and performance.
Written by doctors for doctors, the book offers a biological rationale supported by animal studies, clinical trials, ongoing research initiatives, and epidemiological findings. It provides discussions of body composition, nutrigenomics, and fetal origins of adult-onset musculoskeletal conditions. The contributors identify macronutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and even water for optimal muscle, bone and fat metabolism. They also delineate how new technology can be incorporated into practice and highlight foods and nutraceuticals with effects similar to medications.

Review of What's With Fiber: Enjoy Better Health With A High-fiber, Plant-based Diet (Paperback)

First of all, let me be clear- I know Monica Spiller. I am one of the farmers growing one of the heirloom wheat varieties that she has rescued from oblivion. She painstakingly started it up for us by growing 25 seeds suppliedfrom the wheat seed bank; she then increased the seed year after year and made it available for us to grow. Thanks to her work in the rain and in the heat there are now over 6 of us growing Sonora Wheat, a tasty heirloom variety once lost. There are also a whole lot of people eating it and enjoying it's wonderful flavor as well.

So, I applaud her tangible work devoted to whole grains.

I knew over the years that she was working on a book and I was happy to read it once it was published.

I find that this book is a great resource and I refer to it again and again. Being aware already of most of the reasons why fibers in whole foods are important and healthy, the first two parts were not the sections that I focused on. But for someone not familiar with the subject it should be a good read. The third part is where the treasure is to be found, I think. There were so many very good pieces of information that I had not read anywhere before. One that really sticks in my mind is that okra is a source of glucosamine.

I recommend this book as a reference to keep handy. And I thank the author for her tireless work in all the areas of her work.

Product Description
Fiber is not merely the simple roughage it was once thught to be, and it is not an isolated element in nature. Found in plant foods, fiber is a complex substance, and in whole foods, it is always accompanied by a number of nutrients, including antioxidants, essential oils, minerals, proteins, and vitamins. Fiber occurs in many forms and has very few calories. A diverse diet of whole natural foods can provide all the fiber the body needs to help protect it against health problems., say the authors Gene and Monica Spiller, who go on to warn that a lack of fiber in the diet can lead to degenerative diseses. The current obeisity epidemic in the Western world, for example, is directly related to the lack of plant-based, fiber-filled whole foods that have been larely displaced in today's diets by processed foods, denatured grains, and fiber-free animal products.Part one of "What's with Fiber?" explains what fiber is and how it is naturally contained in whole foods. Part Two outlines the ancestral history of fiber, beginning well before agriculture came into being. It brings fiber into the present "phytochemical era," detailing the ongoing research that is so explosively increasing everyone's knowledge of plant foods and their protective compounds. There is a section on the healthy diets of isolated and non-Western people around the world. The balance of the chapters in Part Two delve into specific diseases and conditions., such as cancer of the colon and rectum, diverticular disease, obesity, heart disease, and high cholesterol, citing studies and detailing fiber's role in helping to ameliorate or prevent thses problems. Part Three discusses specific categories of whole-plant foods, and asks what's with whole grains; beans and legumes; nuts and seeds; fruits; vegetables; seaweeds and fungi (muschroomns); and extracts, juices, and teas. A comprehensive glossary, appendices of explanatory tables and graphs, and a full list of books and refrences are also provided. This concise, focused book is a valuable, timely addition to the ongoing discussion of what constitutes a truly healthy diet.
