The book does talk about exercise...not to do it unless your joints are oiled!! It would be like starting a car without oil...the moving parts would be damaged. Exercise when you're healed! Follow the guidelines in this book & your joints will be oiled! It worked for me! I just wonder where I would be today without my dad giving me this book 20 yrs ago.

Review of Hawaii Diet (Hardcover)

I've experimented with Dr. Ornish's plan, Dr. Atkins' plan, and with vegetarianism; I am NOT running Ornish down, but I gotta admit I DO like tuna fish now and again (by the way, the tuna fish I buy is not only dirt-cheap but is actually totally devoid of fat; and even regular canned-in-water tuna is incredibly low in fat).So Ornish's plan is not something I could strictly adhere to.Dr. Atkins' Diet led me gain body fat and weight; I dropped that like a hot brick.Vegetarianism is cool but it got to be a hassle with my family.Then....I chanced upon THIS book (and in fact got this book from my brother for Christmas).
Dr. Shintani is sort of like Dr. Deepak Chopra:He combines the best of Western medicine with the best of the ancient medicine of his own culture (in Chopra's case, that's Ayurvedic medicine; in Shintani's, of course, it's the wisdom and medicines of ancient Hawaii, before we Westerners screwed things up for them). And he explains -- without bashing, or badmouthing, or distorting facts to make them fit what he wants -- how in fact his diet plan can work.
Simply put, we all know that if you don't eat too many calories you either will not gain weight or in fact you'll LOSE weight.Ah, but how do you do that without feeling deprived?Basically by eating whole, unprocessed, natural foods which not only are low in fat and high in nutrients, but are high in satiety value (you'd have to eat a whole heck of a lot of them to get anywhere NEAR 2000 calories, plus a serving of them would fill you up so you feel satisfied and won't feel like eating more anyway). He suggests things like poi, taro, whole grains, non-dairy and non-meat sources of protein and calcium, and very low-fat foods.BUT he allows for various exceptions:For instance, you can use egg whites or skim milk if you like, or eat tuna and other low-fat meats and fish.He includes a Hawaii/Pacific diet, a Hawaii/mainstream American diet, and a Hawaii/Meditteranean diet so that you DO have choices and variations.
I would have given this book 5 stars, but for one little thing:Some of the recipes call for things that quite frankly we don't see too much of here on the East Coast (my produce store, what with its wonderful choices of apples, pears, cabbage, tomatoes, etc., just refuses to stock breadfruit!phooey!).So, you might not find the recipe section extremely useful, although many of the recipes, such as his low-fat oatmeal, are easy to make and really good too.Other than for that one little qualm I've got, it's a great book.At the very least, check it out:You'll learn a lot from this guy.

Review of Healing Anxiety and Depression (Paperback)

Many books are one-sided arguments for the causes of depression and anxiety. According to these biased books, depressions stems from:
Past child abuse and other negative environment factors
Holding your body in a depressing way - bent down, frowning, etc.
Medical causes
Poor diet, lack of exercise
Isolation
Fill in the blank
But this book is different.
Healing Anxiety and Depression is a refreshing book, for it takes all of the above factors and mixes it into a complete approach to the causes and treatment of anxiety and depression.
Moreover, Daniel Amen, M.D. and his co-author, Lisa C. Routh, M.D. have pioneered the use of a brain imaging technology known as SPECT: Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography. This interesting brain scanning method is different than other methods because it allows one to see how certain parts of the brain interact to cause these debilitating conditions. Other
methods of brain imaging only give a surface view of the brain - which is of very little use for psychiatry.
The authors also touch upon how these areas of the brain cause insomnia, suicide and violence as well. They also point out the different causes of anxiety and depression between the genders. They convincingly describe gender differences from social, psychological, and biological perspectives.
In short: they give you the full picture on depression from every possible angle - literally. In between the pages, interspersed among case histories, personal stories, and scientific explanations, you will find actual pictures of the five areas of the brain they have focused on via SPECT technology:
1.)Basal Ganglia
2.)Deep Limbic System
3.)Anterior Cingulate Gyrus
4.)Temporal Lobes
5.)Prefrontal Cortex
Furthermore, the authors have taken these five areas of the brain, and through thousands of their own patients, compiled their findings on how these five areas interact to cause seven variations of depression and anxiety:
1.)Pure Anxiety
2.)Pure Depression
3.)Mixed Anxiety and Depression
4.)Overfocused Anxiety/Depression
5.)Cyclic Anxiety/Depression
6.)Angry Anxiety/Depression
7.)Unfocused Anxiety/Depression
There's only one drawback to this book: the technical terms can be a bit annoying. I constantly flipped back to beginning chapters to refresh my memory on what they were talking about. The medications and dosages - and their variations, are mind-boggling. Ask your doctor about them.
Despite this, the book is worth the extra memory and concentration required to comprehend it.
It's very empowering too: Dr. Amen is a strong advocate for natural supplements, exercise, and deep diaphragmatic breathing. He also gives the reader a simple, flexible, easy-to-follow diet that'll maximize your brain function. More wisely, however, he directs you towards a way of eating that's based not on a one-size-fits-all mentality, but a diet that is focused on your
particular type of anxiety and/or depression.
He also has his own version of cognitive therapy: ANTS (Automatic Negative Thoughts) and ANTeaters, developed by Amen as a child psychiatrist to help make the ideas a bit more concrete for children. Amen's short chapter on the power of thoughts can help you take more responsibility for your own
thinking.
Closing with "32 Strategies to Overcome Anxiety and Depression," along with a chart summarizing "diagnostic and treatment principles," this book will give you the real knowledge you need to manage your life on a whole new level.

Product Description
Dr. Daniel Amen-a pioneer in uncovering the connections between the brain and behavior-presents his revolutionary approach to treating anxiety and depressive disorders. Healing Anxiety and Depression reveals the major anxiety and depression centers of the brain, offers guidelines and diagnostic tools to determine the specific type of anxiety and depression, and provides a comprehensive program for treating each type. Dr. Bell has written a short encycopedia of medical truths for an intelligent reader who has become disillusioned with dangerous fads, nostrums, and ineffective panaceas. It is not the physician who will can protect us from disease and disability - it is ourselves.21st century medicine has finally endorsed the belief that decisions in health care must be EVIDENCE BASED and not derived from personal anecdotes and uninformed fears. The author has clearly demonstrated that he has not only grasped current research in his field but also can convey it in a stimulating and an accurate way.

Amid a barrage of confusing health advice, many Americans have lost sight of what really matters when it comes to health. Good health is not achieved by taking a magic mix of supplements, having total body scans, or having our blood tested "at the cellular level." Review of The Sugar Control Bible and Cookbook (Paperback)

My doctor introduced me to this way of eating by having me try the two week plan.I had my reservations and all the reasons why I could not follow it.but I said I'd try it for two weeks--but no more.I began eating the Sugar Control Program three months ago and will never go back to my old way of eating.I have so much more energy now and I like the food.I'm never hungry and grocery shopping is so very easy:I shop on the outside paramenters of the grocery store. In otherwords, I eat all fresh food now.
I bought the book to learn more about why this works and found it to be very helpful in learning how the body handles nutrients and what the body needs to function properly.Ms Paltis also gives some background on TBM (Total BOdy modification) and using functional physiology in learning how the body works. This book is a great guide and reference if you want to learn improved ways of functioning.

Review of Amino Revolution (Paperback)

A very good manual on how to use amino acid supplements and their co-factors for achieving wellness and combating aging. All the important areas are covered, like dosage, combinations, the exact vitamins and minerals to take at the same time, as well as foods that contain aminos. The description of the metabolic pathways and how amino acids work are extremely interesting. Areas where amino acids can help are discussed under stress, anxiety, depression, immunity, cancer, heart disease, allergies, digestion, herpes, alcohol, smoking and looking and feeling young. Perhaps the book is a bit outdated, since there is no mention of the wonderful amino NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine) that protects the lungs and mucous membranes and is especially recommended for smokers. The lack of general index and an index to conditions treatable by aminos is a bit of a drawback as this book could be a handy reference work. But four stars overall for an interesting and illuminating text providing much needed information to those who want to take responsibility for their own health.

Review of The No Diet, Diet! (Paperback)

Let me start by saying that I don't generally enjoy reading diet books, as they tend to complicate things. When diets become too complicated, too time consuming, or too restrictive, people are less likely to make it a lifelong process. However, this is not your average diet book; it is about a way of life. It shows the importance of the Mind-Body connection, when setting out to do anything in life, including dieting. It speaks of setting goals, which are reached by setting clear and positive intentions and following through with them. It also speaks of finding someone who will hold you accountable. By doing so, you can set the tone for all aspects of life. To me, this is the recipe for a "Yes, Yes diet".

Review of Shopper's Guide to Healthy Living (Paperback)

This book does such a great job of tackling the seemingly overwhelming task of cleaning up what we take into our bodies by offering phases of what to eliminate from our diet as well as the rest of our lives. The author also gives a great deal of information on why we shouldn't ingest certain things, but at the same time seems pretty laid back and even gives a FANTASTIC chocolate chip cookie recipe that my family devours in one afternoon. And by the way, this recipe isn't healthy which is why I love this book. This author understands that we all need an occasional naughty sweet fix. Thumbs up to this one! I would like to get a hold of the author's cookbook!

Review of The Bible Diet (Paperback)

Dr. Mays has done an excellent job in staying Biblically based in this book.It was a great decision that he decided to write this to beleivers rather than dilute the material to achieve a wider audience, as other Bible-based diet books seem to do.This is equally or more-so a book about achieving a better relationship with Christ as it is about becoming physically healthier - in fact it explains how the two are inseparable - how we treat our bodies (which are God's Temple) reflects how we treat God.He proves everything from scripture, both old and new Testaments - and doesn't fall into taking things out of context to make a point. It actually is apparent that he reached his conclusions from making in depth study of what actually was being said, and if that meant changing his own preconcieved ideas, then so be it.Along the way he debunks the myth that the new Testament no longer requires us to follow God's dietary biblical laws. Personally, I believe that Christs sacrifice did not do away with the Law at all, only it made the need for continual sacrifice unneccesary ("Think not that I have come to destroy the Law and the Prophets, for I have come to magnify them").As a result I also keep God's Holy days as written in the Old Testament, and do not follow the "Holidays" that man has propped up in their place-Easter and Christmas. I realize this may be different than Dr. Mays personal beliefs, but if he continues his studies in the same manner as he has done for this book, he will reach the same inevitable conclusions.
I believe that this is a well written, and often inspired book that is profitable to all Christians. This book is also packed with sound, scientific nutritional advice and explanations.I will be changing the way I eat into an act of worship.

Review of The Automatic Diet (Hardcover)

"Muscle mass is the body's most ancient furnace." ~Charles Stuart Platkin

Charles Stuart Platkin's "Breaking the Pattern" helped me to analyze my self-sabotaging behaviors and again in The Automatic Diet, he presents strategies for overcoming negative patterns in eating.

The Automatic Diet presents ideas for promoting overall health, controlling weight and enhancing your self-esteem. Charles Stuart Platkin unveils misconceptions about weight control and shows you how to have long-term success.

The Diet Detective takes you through your eating behaviors and you can decide if you want to include behavior modification strategies to your everyday diet. Through self-analysis you start to break negative patterns and destructive eating tendencies. He explains how most diets deliver temporary results and most people gain the weight back. How is this diet different?

This is not a diet where you have to give up chocolate (Who could give up Leonidas Belgium chocolates?) or your favorite foods. What the author seeks to encourage is a healthier lifestyle. Since most diets don't bring the results we are looking for, Charles Stuart Platkin advises a lifestyle change. In most cases, he doesn't take away foods like popcorn and carrots; he shows you the best choice. There are a few lists of "items you ought to think about throwing out." These include the usual suspects - sugar, soda, ice cream. I was a little shocked to learn about the calories in the Starbucks Classic Coffee Cake.

I still think in moderation, you can handle a little ice cream, although I must say I feel terrible if I eat too much sugar in a day and it can produce the feeling of chronic fatigue for 24 hours. The author recommends good protein sources, a good variety of vegetables and healthy starch choices.

I am happy to see that another author is talking about the muscle mass issue, because this could help many dieters over the initial hurdles of initial weight gain when you start to exercise. The author also explains why a drastic reduction in calories triggers the body's famine-survival mechanism. This of course slows down your metabolism.

There are also ideas about "excuse busters" and self-talk is definitely your friend or enemy. My most recent self-talk to increase my exercise includes telling myself how good I'm going to feel after I exercise and eat my fruits and vegetables. Being proactive and buying clothes that are too small also seems to be good motivation. I also threw out any clothes that are too big for me, so I simply will have nothing to wear if I don't exercise.

Another idea is not buying anything that you know you should not be eating and buying lots of things you know you should be eating. Then, when you are home and hungry, you make better choices. Doing Yoga also seems to help because it generally puts you in a much calmer state of mind and you feel more in control of your choices.

If you are heading towards 40, then you may also want to read The Metabolic Plan to learn about amazing supplements and how you can stop the aging process, increase muscle mass and feel younger each year.
