Review of Suzanne Somers' Get Skinny on Fabulous Food (Paperback)

This book had a lot of the same information as Suzanne Somer's other book on Somersizing "Eat Great, Lose Weight", however, this book has some updates to the original book as well as many more wonderful recipes.I originally started the Somersizing program after hearing that it could level out hormones.Having had two diseases that related to an imbalance in hormones, the idea that this program could balance out my hormones was the big draw.I did have some weight to lose, but that was not the major incentive for starting this program. After 10 weeks on the program, I never felt better in my life.I'm menopausal, but my hot flashes and night sweats have diminished to almost non-existent.I'm eating well and plenty and have so much energy. Oh, and I've lost 19 pounds to date. Some of my friends also started the program when I told them how well I was doing. All have had good results so far.One friend, who is diabetic, is amazed that her blood levels are the same all day. There are no more drastic spikes.Food combining can be a little tough to understand in the beginning, but once you master it, it is not that difficult to maintain. The main problem is the way that we have been conditioned here in the United States to eat over the years (pizza, white pasta with meat sauce, hamburgers, meat and potatoes and chemically altered foods that sit on the shelf for years). I highly recommend this way of eating to anyone who wants to feel healthy and slim down.

Review of Count Down Your Age: Look, Feel, and Live Better Than You Ever Have Before (Hardcover)

"Count Down Your Age" takes a personalized and wholistic view of health, from an everyday perspective.First, there's the "antiaging test" in the beginning of the book [...]

Then the book offers thoroughly researched and practical plans on lifestyle, nutrition, exercise and medical care.
The plans speak to both vegetarians and nonvegetarians. For me, the most difficult part of the diet plan is that it recommends eating no refined sugar, which would mean no ice cream and cookies. The easiest part of the diet plan is that it recommends eating whole grains, veggies and fruits, which we love.It also recommends eating fish, and YES there is a thorough evaluation of the issue of mercury contamination in fish. One interesting idea about the exercise plan is that we should take up new exercise classes or routines once in a while, in order to keep our minds and bodies sharp and learning new things. Then there are detailed instructions about how to get really effective sleep each night, what affects our sleep, and how to eliminate things which interfere with good sleep.I love about the book that it emphasizes how important it is to laugh, yes LAUGH.Ha, ha ha!!!

The books authors first reveal their own past mistakes and bad habits, and the fulfillment of becoming healthy and strong and shedding those bad habits (and shedding pounds and years!).I like this part, because Dave Bunnell is my father, and I have seen the positive changes in his lifestyle and attitude which inspire me to live better and take better care of my family. You don't have to know the authors to be inspired by the section on their personal lives, but if you have worked in the computer or publishing industry, you can read how Dave used to live during the MacWorld days, and how he's changed. It's inspiring to see how a man approaching sixty can knock off 15 years of his life, but moreso how he changed his definition of success from "having it all" to living well, peaceful and in good health.

Review of 40-30-30 Fat Burning Nutrition: The Dietary Hormonal Connection to Permanent Weight Loss and Better Health [ILLUSTRATED] (Paperback)

I started this plan over one year ago, and I am now 2/3 the man I used to be.I tipped the scales at over 320 pounds and have dropped 91 pounds to date through eating 40-30-30 and proper exercise. The diet plan is easyto follow and gives you more room for error than any other plan on themarket.By that I mean it is easy for you to hop back on the plan if youslip up one meal or even one or two days.Once your body gets"Balanced" you maintain your weight, with a ton of new foundenergy. You begin to burn fat instead of storing it and your cravingsbecome less and less a factor in dieting.
The addition of sample menuscompletes this easy to follow change in eating and helps keep you on trackand focused. This book has fat flush meals, vegetarian fat flush meals andplain old 40-30-30 balanced meals, so pick one and get started.I won'tkid you, the first few weeks were rough but after that the plan melted off,on average, 10 pounds per month and I'm still dropping pounds and incheswith only 9 pounds to my goal weight.I've gone from a XXXL and XXL to anXL and from 46-48 pants to 36-38 pants. My heart rate at rest is 48 and myblood pressure is 116/72.I eat balanced meals and snacks when I want andexercise 4-5 times weekly, and my new found favorite snack is a"Balance" bar.I still have difficulty with Carbs, so I eat thembefore heading to the gym, and use that extra energy as a boost for abetter workout!
This plan is awesome and comes highly recommended by me. Just watch your pocket book, because when you drop as much weight as I havea new wardrobe is a much needed and more than welcome expense!

Review of The Zone: A Dietary Road Map to Lose Weight Permanently : Reset Your Genetic Code : Prevent Disease : Achieve Maximum Physical Performance (Hardcover)

After a lot of encouragement from my mother, who has been following the Zone for two years, I decided to try this diet.I've been on it for 3 months and I've lost 28 pounds and 2 clothing sizes without really changing my modest exercise habits.I eat half as many calories as I used to, but I'm not hungry.I used to have terrible insomnia, often getting no more than 4 hours of sleep a night - that has vanished along with my nearly-constant heartburn. After two months, my blood cholesterol dropped from 200 to 180.I have energy to burn.I take a Cheat Day on Sundays when I eat all the evil things I've been craving that week - croissants, Nutella, McD's sausage biscuits, creamy desserts - and by the end of the day I feel so draggy, dehydrated, sinus-y, that it's a relief to wake up Monday morning and go back onto the plan.
So, why don't I recommend this book?It was the first book Barry Sears (co-)wrote about the Zone, and it reads like an infomercial. The writing style is... loud.It is also poorly organized, jumping around from biochemical jargon to little tidbits of practical advice to anecdotal evidence to health claims for different conditions. And finally, this book doesn't provide any information beyond the very basics about how to actually follow the plan.If you are already convinced (perhaps by all these glowing reviews) of the benefits of the Zone and want to jump right in, the more comprehensive Mastering the Zone with its tons of practical tips is a much better place to start. If after beginning the diet you want more background information about how it works, then pick up this book. The one good thing about the early book is the more gourmet recipes (like the lamb with herbed cheese on zucchini-and-squash "pasta" - mmmm!).There are more recipes in Mastering the Zone, but for my taste they stick too strictly to the glycemic-index guide and also try too hard for one-pot meals; I've never used them.
An issue to look out for: I found that the body fat tables in the back way overestimated my fat weight, which meant an artificially low food intake level. After a couple of weeks hovering on the edge of hunger, I got my body fat percentage measured on a machine at the employee wellness office at work and got a result of ten percentage points less!I raised my food intake and continued losing weight at a healthy clip, with no more hunger pangs.I suspect that the bodyfat-table problem may be why a few reviewers here felt hungry on the Zone. The tables probably underestimated their lean weight, resulting in recommended food intakes that were too low.
The bottom line: even if all the health claims aren't sound, this is a balanced low-calorie diet that's easy to follow indefinitely without hunger, and what can be wrong with that - unless you are Nabisco Foods or something?Just try to start with Mastering the Zone instead.

Review of The Metabolic Typing Diet: Customize Your Diet to Your Own Unique Body Chemistry (Paperback)

Having read all of the negative reviews on metabolic typing diet, I would like to shed some light on the criticisms of the book. I have, off and on, been studying customized nutrition for the last decade of my life. There are two critical questions to ask with regard to diet:1) Is there a one-size-fits-all approach that works for everyone? And 2) If not, what is the best approach to customized nutrition?
To answer the first question one has to go no further than reading one of two books. Upon reading one of those books the open minded reader has no other rational conclusion to draw than the fact that everyone is unique and therefore there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The two books are Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Weston Price and Biochemical Individuality by Roger Williams.
The answer to the second question can be found by looking to see who has researched all of the available data on customized
nutrition and put together a program that the average person can follow.William Wolcott is by far the leading authority on
customized nutrition. He has read all of the recent discoveries and has also read what the pioneers in the field have written. In
addition, he studied under William Kelley (a pioneer in the field of customized nutrition). He has come up with the most
intelligible, comprehensive system available today for people to discover their metabolic type.
I am sure by now you are trying to reconcile the conflicting reviews on the book. Some criticize the book for lacking science or evidence for what is said in the book. Others say the book is excellent. I think a great deal of confusion lies in the assumption that his critics are making regarding the book's intended audience. His intended audience in the book is the masses of people in America. Those masses typically aren't very analytical or scientifically minded. If he had written the book to the scientifically minded he would have alienated a much larger audience, the average American. When I first read his book I was relieved to find that it was so easily understandable to a layperson. Yet when I dug deeper into William Wolcott and his organization Heathexcel I found the tremendous amount of science behind his work was second to none.
I highly recommend this book and believe the information in it to be absolutely life changing. If I had to choose this book or any other ten books combined on the subject of diet I would choose this book hands down. The book is worth every penny you will pay for it and more importantly it is worth the time you will invest reading it. There is more information on his web site healthexcel.com.
