Review of Say Good-Bye to Illness (3rd Edition) (Say Good-Bye To...) (Paperback)

As many people know, suffering from allergies is often times easier than following the doctor's advice to control them. Nambudripad addresses this issue in her book, "Say Good-Bye To Illness."
The book "Say Good-Bye To Illness" is an excellent resource book. It is filled with practical advice and tips on how to treat allergies with complete success.
Over the years Nambudripad's name has been maligned and sneered at as she pioneered the idea that it's not just heredity or pathogens that lead to chronic illness but unseen allergies accumulated over time. Allergies have always been presented to Americans as the hay fever sufferer or the anaphylactic peanut-eater. But millions of Americans are suffering from allergies to things they come in contact with daily and don't show up as a sneeze or anaphylactic shock but eventually lead to serious chronic illness. Traditional medical treatments are a miserable failure as attested to by many of our chronically ill. As the drugs and medicines have been added to the mix instead of noninvasive NAET treatments, Americans are suffering complications and a prognosis of continual deterioration. Dr. Nambudripad's idea that treating allergies with NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique) can lead to eradicating illness and better health for a host of chronically ill patients has been vindicated.
The NAET is a 4 step approach. Step 1 is where you begin treating the basic 10 immune boosters to tip the scale to bolster your immune system and get the immune system up and running to continue to Step 2. In this step you begin to treat individual allergies you may have to foods, substances, the environment, (any and all allergies and/or sensitivities) and these are continued based on your condition and rate of recovery. Some patients need three NAET treatments per week to start and then taper off as their condition improves. Step 3 is where you begin to assimilate and understand how NAET works to return you to a state of health and in Step 4 you learn to test and treat allergies on yourself. "Say Good-Bye to Illness" discusses each of these steps and concentrates mainly on Steps 3 and 4. "The Naet Guide Book" is the companion book to "Say Good-Bye to Illness" and it is a must read for every patient starting out on their NAET journey and it focuses mainly on Steps 1 and 2.
"Say Good-Bye To Illness" covers in great detail how Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Techniques work. The first section of the book through Chapter 7 delves into what the techniques are and why and how they work. The second section, Chapter 8 through Chapter 11, describes NAET through the explanation of muscle response testing, causes of disease, and the discovery of NAET, to the role that Chinese medicine and the acupuncture meridians play in this exciting new health treatment.
Some of my favorite chapters are found in the third section of the book. Chapters 12 through Chapter 22 detail how specific allergies affect different organs in the body from the digestive system, respiratory system, skin, joints, genitourinary, circulatory, and nervous systems to the myriad of miscellaneous disorders like addictions, yeast, candidiasis, mold, fungus, CFS, eye disorders, pain disorders, autism, asthma and so many more.
This section's explanations are dotted with over 100 success stories to give the reader a pleasant break from the medical detail and also affords the reader a moment to reflect how patients have backed up Nambudripad's medical explanations in these chapters. Extraordinary, yummy stories from patient-volunteered testimonials, these are patients' tales about their NAET journeys and amazing successes. Stories of people having rid themselves of plaguing pains and illnesses and how NAET successfully eradicated health conditions like peanut anaphylaxis, allergy to shellfish, constant sciatic pain, food allergies, hives, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, colitis, lactose intolerance, hay fever, bronchitis, asthma, dust allergy, eczema, hair loss, arthritis, osteoarthritis, sports injury, psoriasis, lupus, bed wetting, allergy to dairy, PMS, sinus headaches, migraines, multiple sclerosis, insomnia, osteoporosis, diaper rash and so many more which all help the reader truly understand the miracle that is NAET.
YES you can eat anything you want again! You can eat dairy, gluten or peanuts and have pizza, cake or even shellfish, wine or coffee. The key of course is eradicating the allergies you have to the foods you love. You can learn to handle your allergies on the fly after a night out where you know you have sinned. Just keep a little of what it was you ate and self treat it! This book includes a tip to master self-testing.
This 500-page book includes information for the multiple chemical sensitive patient as well as vital nutritional advice to maintain good health.
The book "Say Good-Bye to Illness" makes living a fun and active life a real possibility again for so many of us, and it is an enjoyable read I highly recommend!

Review of From Fatigued to Fantastic (Paperback)

From Fatigued to Fantastic by Jacob Teitelbaum MD, Third Edition.

Most doctors are familiar with Dr. Teitelbaum featured as an eloquent keynote speaker on the medical lecture circuit, dazzling the audience with his encyclopedic knowledge of both conventional and natural medicine.Trained in internal medicine, Jacob Teitelbaum, is a gifted and brilliant medical researcher and clinician. He is also a model for ethical business conduct, because unlike other crass, commercially oriented docs who hide their knowledge or charge for it, Teitelbaum openly shares his medical knowledge with the public and other doctors. All of Teitelbaum's treatment protocols are listed in Appendix G of the book, and are posted on his web site.In addition, all profits from books and nutritional supplements are donated to charity.

The 400 page book is lengthy, and is actually four books in one.Where previous authors have written entire books on each of the four main topics, with the acronym SHIN for Sleep, Hormones, Infections and Nutrition, Teitelbaum combines them all into one large volume which canbe used as desk reference on chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.

In addition, the book can serve as an introductory text for the open minded MD interested in integrating natural medicine into a conventional medical practice, since sleep disorders, hormonal imbalance, chronic or hidden infections, and nutritional deficiencies are some of the more common reasons to seek medical attention.

This is the third edition of his book, and Teitelbaum has managed to make a great book even better. Those familiar with the work of the Connecticut cardiologist, Steven Sinatra MD, will recognize the triad of D-Ribose, L-carnitine and Co-Enzyme Q-10 mentioned by Teitelbaum to jump start energy in the chronicly fatigued.

Insomnia or poor quality sleep is a major issue for many chronic fatigue sufferers, creating a vicious cycle which perpetuates the disorder.Teitelbaum provides a long list of natural remedies such as L-theanine 5-HTP, L-Tryptophan, Melatonin, and Magnesium, as well as today's prescription drugs for sleep heavily advertised on television.

The Hormonal Support chapter is the meat of the book, with Teitelbaum crediting the landmark work, the Safe Use of Cortisol, by McK Jefferies, and Broda Barnes' work on natural thyroid. To these medical greats,Teitelbaum adds his own unique insights gleaned from years of clinical practice. For example, Teitelbaum finds that most patients need only 5 to 12.5 mg of cortisol, andrecommends keeping cortisol dosage below 20 mg per day to avoid adrenal suppression.

Like many other natural medicine docs, Teitelbaum finds bio-identical hormone supplementation important for a successful outcome, and asserts that bio-identicals are safe, a conclusion based on his own clinical experience and medical literature reviews by Kent Holtorf, MD, posted on Teitelbaum's website.

Teitelbaum found that many of his patients had chronic infections of sinuses, urinary tract, prostate, and respiratory system, and had taken multiple courses of antibiotics leading to kill-off of the friendly bacteria in the colon, as well as fungal overgrowth, also called Candidiasis.Teitelbaum credits The Yeast Connection by William Crooks for much of this information which includes a lengthy discussion of anti-fungal drugs and natural remedies for Candidiasis.

The Nutrition chapter covers a detailed program with a complete vitamin, mineral program with recommended dosages, and discusses dietary avoidance of caffeine, alcohol, sugar, white flour and other practical considerations.

My hat is off in admiration and thanks to Jacob Teitelbaum MD, for this third edition of an important book, the definitive work on chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. No doubt, many have benefitted and will continue to benefit from the medical insights in this book.We expect and look forward to a continuing stream of valuable insights in future works as his medical career continues.

Other books recommended are Pain Free 1,2,3 by Jacob Teitelbaum MD, The Safe Use of Cortisol by McK Jefferies, and Adrenal Fatigue by Wilson.

Jeffrey Dach MD

Review of Apples & Pears: The Body Shape Solution for Weight Loss and Wellness (Hardcover)

If you're an apple shape you won't feel very good about yourself after reading this book. The book goes into detail about all the various apple related health problems - cardiovascular, reproductive, even psychological (apparently, apple shapes suffer from more stress and depression - yet pear shapes suffer from more body image problems?!?) Additionally, there seemed to be a lot of words of encouragement for pears and virtually none for apples - and since apples are apparently at such a higher risk for all of these unpleasant conditions (again, everything from psycholgical to hormonal to vascular) aren't we the ones that need the words of encouragement? It didn't make me feel too good to read that even if I lose as much weight as I possibly can (and do it in the healthiest manner possible), I'm still an apple shape and therefore still at a higher risk for the above said problems.I find that hard to believe.

If you're pear shaped and don't like your body, read this book - I guarantee you'll feel better about yourself after. If you're apple shaped, DO NOT read this book.It will only make you feel worse. If you're an apple who has struggled with your weight for years (like me) you most likely know that carrying excess weight around your middle is not healthy - you don't need to read a whole book devoted to explaining how bad it is.

If you're an apple shape looking for advice on whittling your waistline, read The Abs Diet instead.

When it comes to your health, body shape really does matter!Chances are you already know if you're an apple or a pear. If you tend to gain weight in your belly and back, you're an apple. If your thighs and derriere are the canvas on which your snack food sins are written, then you're a pear. But what does it matter? Gut or butt, too much is too much, right? Wrong!
Whether you are an apple-shaped or pear-shaped woman determines far more than whether you select a swimsuit with a waist-whittling pattern or a thigh-hiding skirt. According to medical pioneer Marie Savard, M.D., your body shape is the single most powerful predictor of future health. It is connected to differences in your physical chemistry, hormone production, and metabolism and directly affects your likelihood for obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis, the metabolic syndrome, diabetes, stroke, varicose veins, and certain cancers.
Your body shape may be putting your health in danger through no fault of your own. But there is good news: There are things you can do to prevent or even reverse the risks of body shape. Apples & Pears: The Body Shape Solution for Weight Loss and Wellness offers women of all shapes and sizes specific nutritional and exercise recommendations based on body type. Review of Food and Healing (Paperback)

Although I don't necessarily agree with everything Annemarie Colbin has to say about food & health (for example, I believe that certain immunizations are a critical part of one's health care and not unnecessary or harmful), "Food and Healing" is an excellent and thoughtful treatment of a complex subject. The title may erroneously give the impression that the book is just for those who are ill. In fact, the book has a lot to offer to anyone who is interested in learning more about nutrition, and how what we eat can make us feel better or worse. We know that caffeine can give you energy or make you nervous, and that a high-fat diet can cause heart disease; Colbin theorizes that other kinds of food, food ingredients and even methods of preparation affect the body in different but no less profound ways. Particularly intriguing are Colbin's musings on "food philosphy": e.g., multi-faceted comparisons of different diets; how different thinkers approach food in a different philosophical way; various ways to look at food choices and their effects on the body. I was impressed by the breadth of the sources Colbin cites (although occasionally one finds an outdated reference, like the ones to the now-debunked Tasaday "tribe") and how she weaves everything together into a coherent and readable book. What really won me over, however, was Colbin's insistence on taking a flexible approach to eating. Colbin emphasizes that no diet should remain static, and we need to choose different kinds of diets to reflect and address what is going on in our lives at different times. She is remarkably open-minded and tolerant of all points of view, allowing the reader to take away nuggets of wisdom from unlikely sources. If some of the opinions expressed seemed a bit too airy-fairy for me (e.g., auras, and her apparent rejection of the germ theory of disease transmission), even these sections were interesting and thought-provoking. Required reading for anyone who has "food issues," wants to improve her diet, has a chronic health problem, or works in the nutrition field.

Product Description
Ten years ago, Colbin's Food and Healing stood at the forefront of the food revolution, exploring the link between diet and health. In this anniversary edition, she provides updates on recent dietary systems, including low-fat, food combining, and alternative medicine.

Review of The Baby Boomers' Guide to Living Forever (Paperback)

At first blush most of the information if acted on in the book will probably result in adding years, if not decades to some peoples lives. My own recommendation is to do your own independent research [separate from this book], first, if you make any life changing adjustments, particularly if it involves consuming vitamins suggested in the book. Some of the recommendations only strengthened what I already knew, such as taking Co-Q10 on a daily basis.Co-Q10 is expensive, but a very good nutrient that can help protect your body from free radical damage, resulting in reduced risks of succumbing to various cancers and heart diseases.Other recommendations in the book did raise some concerns for me such as consuming L-Carnosine on a daily basis.Research i've found dating back to 1984 expressed that L-Carnosine built up in the body can potentially have dangerous neurotoxic side effects.Taking too much of it could induce what is medically referred to as "Carnosinemia", which also can be inherited. Most of the oral vitamin supplements in the market offer L-Carnosine at 500MG doses, recommending you take it once or twice daily. The book recommends 200MG per day in single or "divided doses" and stressed "its low level of toxicity"...... but I don't know how much is too much frankly, so I will avoid this particular molecule until more research data is known.

Product Description
This book presents the thesis that radical extensions ofhuman life span are only a few decades away. The problem is many babyboomers may not live long enough to avail themselves of thesebreakthrough technologies - but they will be close! This book offers away to live a healthier life now, so that anyone can maximize his orher chances of being alive when this new wave of life extension andrejuvenation really begins to take hold.

Review of Hawaii Diet (Hardcover)

I've experimented with Dr. Ornish's plan, Dr. Atkins' plan, and with vegetarianism; I am NOT running Ornish down, but I gotta admit I DO like tuna fish now and again (by the way, the tuna fish I buy is not only dirt-cheap but is actually totally devoid of fat; and even regular canned-in-water tuna is incredibly low in fat).So Ornish's plan is not something I could strictly adhere to.Dr. Atkins' Diet led me gain body fat and weight; I dropped that like a hot brick.Vegetarianism is cool but it got to be a hassle with my family.Then....I chanced upon THIS book (and in fact got this book from my brother for Christmas).
Dr. Shintani is sort of like Dr. Deepak Chopra:He combines the best of Western medicine with the best of the ancient medicine of his own culture (in Chopra's case, that's Ayurvedic medicine; in Shintani's, of course, it's the wisdom and medicines of ancient Hawaii, before we Westerners screwed things up for them). And he explains -- without bashing, or badmouthing, or distorting facts to make them fit what he wants -- how in fact his diet plan can work.
Simply put, we all know that if you don't eat too many calories you either will not gain weight or in fact you'll LOSE weight.Ah, but how do you do that without feeling deprived?Basically by eating whole, unprocessed, natural foods which not only are low in fat and high in nutrients, but are high in satiety value (you'd have to eat a whole heck of a lot of them to get anywhere NEAR 2000 calories, plus a serving of them would fill you up so you feel satisfied and won't feel like eating more anyway). He suggests things like poi, taro, whole grains, non-dairy and non-meat sources of protein and calcium, and very low-fat foods.BUT he allows for various exceptions:For instance, you can use egg whites or skim milk if you like, or eat tuna and other low-fat meats and fish.He includes a Hawaii/Pacific diet, a Hawaii/mainstream American diet, and a Hawaii/Meditteranean diet so that you DO have choices and variations.
I would have given this book 5 stars, but for one little thing:Some of the recipes call for things that quite frankly we don't see too much of here on the East Coast (my produce store, what with its wonderful choices of apples, pears, cabbage, tomatoes, etc., just refuses to stock breadfruit!phooey!).So, you might not find the recipe section extremely useful, although many of the recipes, such as his low-fat oatmeal, are easy to make and really good too.Other than for that one little qualm I've got, it's a great book.At the very least, check it out:You'll learn a lot from this guy.

Review of The Smart Carb Guide to Eating Out (Mass Market Paperback)

In this type of society where men as well as women work, there is not enough time to prepare a healthy meal.
Thanks to Tracy Jones I can eat the right food outside the home.I can work and know that I always can go to a fast food or family restaurant and get the right amount of food without worrying about counting my calories or carbs.
Another important benefit of following the menus she describes in this book is the level of energy that you have after eating. I can go back to work and I have such a high level of energy that you might think that I took a nap.I am now alert all the time and I am not hungry for four hours since I feel satisfied with what I ate. Finally, the snacks in between keeps me going the rest of the day.
I also really enjoy the recipies of the salads that I can prepare at home.
Furthermore, my insulin level is going to be controlled because I am eating a balance diet (40-30-30).I will be a healthy person.
This book explains the diet in a very simple and easy way to follow.
Thank you for making one part of my life easier.

Product Description
A fast-food diet? It may seem like an oxymoron, but for the millions of Americans living a low-carb lifestyle-many of whom still end up eating on the run at fast-food joints and sitting down with their families at chain restaurants-The Smart-Carb Guide to Eating Out shows how to stick to a low-carb diet when eating on the go.

Rather than simply listing the nutritional content and requiring us to do the math ourselves to figure out what to eat, Tracy Jones, M.S., provides a shortcut by listing which menu items (or combination of menu items) compose a smart-carb meal that is compatible with The Zone, South Beach, or any 40-30-30 diet. The book also provides calorie and carb content so that readers can easily customize meals to meet their own nutritional needs. And with the help of the 7-Day Quick Start Program, readers can quickly implement their favorite fast-food meals-like the Classic Single hamburger and Junior Frosty at Wendy's-to jump-start their weight loss.

About 9 years ago, I had started to put on weight for the first time in my life.I couldn't believe it when I stepped on a friends scale and discovered that I had gained almost 20 pounds - seemingly overnight!I was very depressed and not looking forward to a life of diets - I just love food and cooking too much. Then I saw Joyce on the Monel Williams show.At the time, she was promoting her other book, Bottoms Up.I bought it and acquired a couple small weights - and began my transformation. The first workout was a killer - I was dripping with sweat in no time and feeling very weak.I didn't even think I would make it through! But I kept at it and after three weeks, I had a noticeable difference - my shoulders no longer slumped, my chest was perkier, my stomach was trimmer and I FELT BETTER - all without drastic dieting.I knew this was a start in the right direction!
I ended up trimming myself down to my high school size (size 4) in no time at all.My husband told me I looked better than I ever did.I then bought her other book, Definition. This is the book I now use for my weight workouts. Her routines are sound - they work - and you don't have to spend all your time in a gym.You can do this in the privacy of your own home.Joyce is very encouraging and her stuff is spelled out clearly, for the athletically challenged like myself.
Because of Joyce's workouts, I am more active - I walk all the time, I hike, I do yoga, etc.I still eat like a horse, but remain the same size!I really think Joyce changed my life for the better!

Review of Superfoods (Paperback)

"Vegetables: nature's own health insurance - no other foods provide so much protection against heart disease, skin disorders, cancer, and high blood pressure, and give the body all-around vitality." ~ pg. 198

In SuperFoods you will find information on how to lower cholesterol by eating apples, why figs can help prevent cancer and how members of the squash family can help to keep your lungs healthy.

Each Super Food is featured on its own page (sometimes two) and is shown in full-color pictures.

This cookbook is divided into three main sections:

The Superfoods
The Recipes
Protect Your Health

Some of the food featured include blueberries, mangoes, melon, kiwifruit, asparagus, onions, sweet potatoes and celery. Nuts, seeds, dairy, eggs, meat, fish, poultry, herbs, spices and miscellaneous items like chocolate, tea and coffee are discussed in detail.

Each recipe features an illness the foods help to cure. Like the Pumpkin soup helps with digestive, respiratory and skin issues. An Avocado, walnut and pear salad can help with fatigue.

A few examples of the delicious recipes include:

Banana and Almond Muffins
Green Tea Bread
Spicy Winter Bread Pudding
Red Plums with Brandy
Linden-apple Tea
Ginger Punch
Tagliatella with Artichokes
Asparagus Citronette
Spiced Peaches

"It is no longer possible to doubt that there is a direct link between diet and cancer." ~ pg. 264

In the last section, menus are given for various health conditions. You can find information regarding: cancer, circulatory problems, digestive problems, stress, fatigue, joint problems, respiratory problems, skin problems, urinary problems and weight control. This book also has some fun ideas, like reading the "Ten Commandments for the Overweight" gives you permission not to eat everything on your plate (see page 333). A good page to photocopy for relatives who insist on feeding you seconds, thirds, etc.

The first section on the specific foods is an educational and fun read. Seeing all the delicious foods in full-color pictures makes you hungry for something healthy. The recipes are uncomplicated and this book is perfect for anyone who loves to cook or wants to make excellent food choices from any menu.

Review of The Wine Lover's Healthy Weight Loss Plan (Paperback)

In my business, I receive a lot of requests for endorsements, but accept only those I deem the best. And I jumped on this request immediately. It could not be more appropriate for my audience.

I agree with the reviewer from Seattle who described this as a great reference book - both for its informed health information and its storehouse of healthy gourmet recipes (no those are NOT compatible).

Not just for wine lovers? No, this is a great source book for those wondering whether wine can be beneficial to their health. The answer is yes it is beneficial, if consumed daily and in moderation. And that's good news for all of us.

Review of An Extraordinary Power to Heal (Paperback)

I'd like to first, thank Dr. Semon for this book.An Extraordinary Power's approach has helped my son incredibly. Before I knew about the 4 stages, I never considered that the food I was preparing might in fact be harming my children. The book is well-laid out, and it gives a very comprehensive explanation as to why malt and other chemicals commonly found in foods are actually bad for us.My son was identified as mildly ADHD.This diagnosis was made and medication was recommended.Dr. Semon's book made it possible for us to change his diet (something we did very easily) and the difference in his behavior is remarkable! I was skeptical at first, but by following the first stage of the four stage diet, we saw an amazing difference in his ability to focus, and use self-control.Now, whenever we stray from the 1st Stage, we notice a spike in his hyperactivity. We get back to the 1st Stage, and he is once again in control. The book is well laid out and easy to follow. It is written in a language that is easy for anyone to understand and follow, and the chapters are written such that it doesn't need not be read in an exact order. An Extraordinary Power To Heal is exactly what it promises, a power to heal.I would highly recommend this book to any person or parent that is seeking help for ADHD or anyone who feels like they would like to improve their eating habits.

Product Description
An Extrardinary Power to Heal, by Bruce Semon, M.D., Ph.D., and Lori Kornblum, was written for people suffering from supposedly untreatable medical conditions. This book explains why yeast and yeast chemicals from the yeast in your intestines and in your food cause these conditions and how you can change your diet to stop them. An Extraordinary Power to Heal has explanations and case studies about so-called auto-immune conditions, including fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other conditions. An Extraordinary Power to Heal also has explanations and case studies about other medical conditions that respond to anti-yeast treatment, including Autism, ADHD and ADD, Tourette's Syndrome, depression, headaches, seizures, skin problems including eczema and psoriasis, allergies and food addiction. The case studies are of real patients who changed their lives by changing their diet and using anti-yeast therapy. An Extraordinary Power to Heal contains a complete treatment plan, and has comprehensive footnotes referencing medical studies that support the observations, case studies and explanations in the book. The companion cookbook, Extraordinary Foods for the Everyday Kitchen, has more than 125 recipes and more than 60 menus to help you implement the suggestions in An Extraordinary Power to Heal.

Review of Your Child's Weight: Helping without Harming (Paperback)

I stumbled on this book while searching for family meal plans. What a revelation. We have one child who we have worried over for years regarding her eating habits and high weight. My husband actually picked up this book and read it cover to cover and, uncharacteristically, led the way in a radical change about how we think about meals and food in our household. This book is full of common sense for families who may be struggling with a child's weight problem. The basic idea is so ZEN--stop controlling, stop struggling, stop worrying and you change the very nature of the problem. Now we're no longer trapped in the double standard of telling one kid to stop eating and the other to finish her food. We're seeing our picky 3 year old actually grab a carrot on his own!!My overeater pushes back from the table when she's full and doesn't crouch over her plate like a famished animal. My middle child is learning to sit in her chair and enjoy the food that is available instead of asking for alternate meals. My husband and I actually have time to catch up with the kids. And I have been able to look at my own eating patterns (and their origins) in a new way. This is a profoundly wise book and I'm so grateful to have discovered it.

Product Description
As much about parenting as feeding, this latest release from renowned childhood feeding expert Ellyn Satter considers the overweight child issue in a new way. Combining scientific research with inspiring anecdotes from her decades of clinical practice, Satter challenges the conventional belief that parents must get overweight children to eat less and exercise more. In the long run, she says, making them go hungry and forcing them to be active makes children preoccupied with food, prone to overeating, turned off to activity, and likely to gain too much weight. Trust is a central theme here: children must be able to trust parents to provide as much food as they need to satisfy their appetites; parents must trust children to eat only as much as they need. Satter provides compelling evidence that, if parents do their jobs with respect to feeding, children are remarkably capable of knowing how much to eat.
