Review of Arthritis and Common Sense (Fireside Book) (Paperback)

This book saved my life! I highly reccomend it! 20 yrs ago when I was 30 I could barely walk. I was always in so much pain... every dang joint in my body! Now I am totally healthy at 50!!! The book does talk about exercise...not to do it unless your joints are oiled!! It would be like starting a car without oil...the moving parts would be damaged. Exercise when you're healed! Follow the guidelines in this book & your joints will be oiled! It worked for me! I just wonder where I would be today without my dad giving me this book 20 yrs ago.

Review of Breaking Out of Food Jail: How to Free Yourself from Diets and Problem Eating, Once and for All (Paperback)

If everyone followed the advice in this book, it would put a lot of eating disorders therapists, as well as diet gurus out of business. The author's theory is that eating disorders are biological in origin rather than emotional, and that the artificial food restriction of dieting causes a rebound effect in the body. If you stop the artifical restriction, and eat according to your hunger signals, your normal eating patterns will return and your weight will normalize. Unlike some books that advocate a similar philosophy, the author does not advocate eating poor quality foods. She explicitly states that you should eat high quality real foods whenever you are hungry. Thus, this book DOES NOT ignore good nutrition which some of these books do. She states that if your appetite always satisified, you'll soon lose interest in poor quality foods. I cured my own binge eating problem by following this advice, and don't eat much in the way of junk type foods anymore. I don't understand why more obesity researchers don't advocate this approach, and why Ms. Antonello seems to be a lone voice of sanity crying out in the wilderness.

Product Description

FINALLY YOU CAN SET YOURSELF FREE
If you've tried every diet out there, if you've counted every gram of fat, every last calorie and every meal exchange, and you're still fighting the food wars, it's time for Breaking Out of Food Jail, a commonsense approach to food, eating, and appetites.
Jean Antonello's practical, step-by-step program pinpoints and eliminates the most common cause of eating problems -- the fear of overeating. That's right -- if you've tried everything and you're still battling your appetite, it's probably because you're not getting enough to eat at the right time. When you deprive your body of food for any reason -- and as you do on most diels -- your body goes into a famine state. Your hunger soars, along with cravings for fatty foods and sugars -- the foods your body can most quickly turn into stored fuel to protect you from starvation. If you're like most dieters, you eventually respond to those signals by bingeing. And then you go back to your restrictive eating and start the cycle all over again. Breaking Out of Food Jail will release you from this trap and show you:
* How not eating enough results in cravings, overeating, disturbed eating behavior, and weight gain
* How the "feast or famine" pattern undermines even the most conscientious eater
* How to have a normal relationship with food -- including learning to eat whenever you're hungry and stopping when you are full
* Why most eating problems are not psychological but physiological
* How to prevent eating problems in children and young adults by teaching kids how to tune into their hunger and eat right
Filled with self-tests, affirmations, simple exercises, and the latest research on dieting, as well as Jean's list of "real foods" that should be in every refrigerator and pantry, Breaking Out of Food Jail will transform your relationship with food and your body and eliminate dieting from your life, once and for all.

Review of Amino Revolution (Paperback)

A very good manual on how to use amino acid supplements and their co-factors for achieving wellness and combating aging. All the important areas are covered, like dosage, combinations, the exact vitamins and minerals to take at the same time, as well as foods that contain aminos. The description of the metabolic pathways and how amino acids work are extremely interesting. Areas where amino acids can help are discussed under stress, anxiety, depression, immunity, cancer, heart disease, allergies, digestion, herpes, alcohol, smoking and looking and feeling young. Perhaps the book is a bit outdated, since there is no mention of the wonderful amino NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine) that protects the lungs and mucous membranes and is especially recommended for smokers. The lack of general index and an index to conditions treatable by aminos is a bit of a drawback as this book could be a handy reference work. But four stars overall for an interesting and illuminating text providing much needed information to those who want to take responsibility for their own health.

Review of Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution: Nature's Answer to Drugs (Paperback)

This outstanding book solved what numerous doctors, clinics, university hospitals could not do in 20 years.Using the clear, concise, easy guidelines in this book, my 20 year problems of obesity and chronic depression started to disappear in days, and 5 weeks later I was a totally new person. This book is just outstanding. It covers a wide variety of illness and ailments.Amino acids and essential fatty acids were critical to my results, yet they are inexpensive, safe to use, and have no adverse side effects. Three doctors who use this type of approach are James Kwako MD, Santa Barbara, CA., and Julian Whitaker MD, Newport Beach, CA., and Priscilla Slagle MD, Los Angeles; they have years of experience and success. The dramatic results I got from this book cannot be over stated.I use iHerb and Jo Mar Laboratories for obtaining the products needed. I am not affiliated or connected with any book, doctor, company listed here. I donated 8 copies of the book to 2 county library systems. The book saved my life.

Review of Fire Up Your Metabolism: 9 Proven Principles for Burning Fat and Losing Weight Forever (Paperback)

After ten years of struggling with weight loss I felt that my body and mind went through enough torment. I have used all of the approaches including - Atkins , Weight Watchers, The Zone Diet, LA Weight Loss, Jenny Craig, Trim Spa,and many of the so called "fad diets". Each and every time I was not only disapointed, but I was left extremely hungry. What does a starving person do?They eat and eat and eat. I was told to check out Fire Up Your Metabolism from a friend, and I decided to try to learn its disciplines.
Let me say that I am extremelly impressed by the Latakos twins thorough relation of increasing my metabolism to shed the weight that has been so hard to lose. This book is incredible and I feel that it has set me up to finally succeed. It explains the way the body works to fully capitalize on increasing the amount of calories I burn throughout the day.
I totally recommend this book to only people that are serious not only about losing weight, but to educate themselves so they can participate in a healthy lifestyle forever. This is the best twelve dollars I have spent in 2004.My appreciation and thanks go out to the authors.

Review of El Nuevo Libro De Cocina Dietetica Del Dr Atkins: Con Recetas Rapidas Y Sencillas (Spanish Edition) (Paperback)

This is an excellent book. I have lost 20-lbs (from 167 - 147) and I just couldn't lose more than 5-lbs on low calorie diets. This one works and I'm never hungry because of the diet.
I bought this book for a dear friend of mine who only reads in spanish. I don't know if she'll be able to do the diet or not because of tortillas and black beans (she has a husband and two children) but we'll see how she does :)

Review of The Testosterone Advantage Plan : Lose Weight, Gain Muscle, Boost Energy (Paperback)

This book makes more sense than most. The macro-nutrients are not radically unbalanced in their meals. And the meals are one of the easiest to follow since they basically borrowed the Mediterranean diet (one of the best out there, IMO), and made some slight adjustments to it, which I think were improvements. And I think they make a strong case against the low-fat diet. Nor are the authors taken in with all of the supplemental junk that health magazines try to push over on you. These authors are more savvy than most. And they explain and make a very good case at why weight-lifting has a much better metabolic effect than aerobics alone.Over half of the book covers its exercise program, and it is filled with hundreds of pictures, but this wasn't as much of an interest for me, but it might be for others.I found the book to have many interesting facts and case studies, many I haven't read about before. But the debate over what are the optimum protein levels is far from over. There are some respected nutritionists and scientists out there that think athletes need more protein than the USDA recommends; one the author quotes from is Professor Peter Lemon who is well respected. But there are also other well respected scientists still in the same camp that the USDA protein levels are all you need, and this includes for athletes and body-builders too.E.g., take Professor Ellington Darden. The latter used to be on the high protein bandwagon for ten years of his life until he obtained his P.H.D., and when he did one of his tests on himself, he noticed anytime he went over whatever the USDA recommended for his weight, he was urinating the excess down the toilet. But at least the amounts of protein the author is recommending isn't overly excessive.
The book was under-funded, as most health books are.Despite its title, not once was a single testosterone test done for any of the participants. They mentioned that testosterone tests are very difficult to get good readings on, and they would have had to take all the participants in as boarders to be able to do that.Nevertheless, they still make a good case of it by relying heavily on studies which showed that those who ate more fat, had more testosterone. Some of the other studies were of those taking testosterone supplements.
Not one single participant was thin to test their weight muscle gain program out on.So if you're one of these guys, you'll need to be the first guinea pig.All of the pictures I seen were of heavyweights. They started with 30 volunteers, and ended up with 16.And of that 16 remaining, I only counted6 before and after pictures of the participants.Even when you look at the final 6 that are left that they choose to be their prime examples of what their plan could do for you; you'll notice the typical before pictures of the person just standing their looking sullen without his shirt on, and making no effort to suck in his gut. With the after pictures, they put on their happy face and half of them have their shirts on for the picture! And only one set of pictures even comes close to having the same before and after pose.Several have their arms up, and it's really amazing what sucking in your gut can do.Despite all of my criticism, you can still see a change, and I think the authors give us accurate measurements. But even when they are giving you personal statistics about the final 6 participants that are left, you'll notice the information is scant. Some left in their before and after bench press numbers; some choose to leave in their before and after chin-ups; nothing is consistent. They choose to pick what they want you to see, and disregard the rest. Now let's see ALL of the pictures and statistics from everyone including the final 10 participants!
