Review of Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution: Nature's Answer to Drugs (Paperback)

This outstanding book solved what numerous doctors, clinics, university hospitals could not do in 20 years.Using the clear, concise, easy guidelines in this book, my 20 year problems of obesity and chronic depression started to disappear in days, and 5 weeks later I was a totally new person. This book is just outstanding. It covers a wide variety of illness and ailments.Amino acids and essential fatty acids were critical to my results, yet they are inexpensive, safe to use, and have no adverse side effects. Three doctors who use this type of approach are James Kwako MD, Santa Barbara, CA., and Julian Whitaker MD, Newport Beach, CA., and Priscilla Slagle MD, Los Angeles; they have years of experience and success. The dramatic results I got from this book cannot be over stated.I use iHerb and Jo Mar Laboratories for obtaining the products needed. I am not affiliated or connected with any book, doctor, company listed here. I donated 8 copies of the book to 2 county library systems. The book saved my life.

Review of El Nuevo Libro De Cocina Dietetica Del Dr Atkins: Con Recetas Rapidas Y Sencillas (Spanish Edition) (Paperback)

This is an excellent book. I have lost 20-lbs (from 167 - 147) and I just couldn't lose more than 5-lbs on low calorie diets. This one works and I'm never hungry because of the diet.
I bought this book for a dear friend of mine who only reads in spanish. I don't know if she'll be able to do the diet or not because of tortillas and black beans (she has a husband and two children) but we'll see how she does :)

Review of Atkins for Life: The Complete Controlled Carb Program for Permanent Weight Loss and Good Health [BARGAIN PRICE] (Hardcover)

After all the controversy about "Low-Carb" diets it's good to get the story straight from the man who started it.This book lays out the ground rules and provides a good overview of the science behind the hype one reads on the Internet and hears from the media.

I found that just a few minutes with Dr. Atkins' book answered a lot of my questions about how carbohydrates affect your diet and overall health. It also set me straight on a number of misconceptions I had formed out of ignorance or from the half-truths spouted by diet "experts".

If you're thinking about a low-carb diet like Southbeach, you owe it to yourself to get Atkins' perspective on nutrition and food-related health issues.

Bottom line...there's a lot information in this book.It has a reasonable number of good meal plans and great recipes.Only shortfall I found was the lack of cross-referencing so finding all the parts to a meal takes a bit of effort.

Review of Dr. Atkins' Health Revolution: How Complementary Medicine can Extend Your Life (Paperback)

I wasn't looking for a cure for my sleep disorder, monthly cramps, headaches and occasional UTIs when I picked up Dr. Atkins'Health Revolution three years back; I was just doing a little preliminary research on the Atkins Diet to see if this guy was some kind of quack, as his detractors often claimed.Lo and behold, a new world of health and physically based well-being opened to me as I began to understand just how my nutritional habits (and lack thereof) were undermining the quality of my life.
A common myth about Dr. Atkins that could stand some clearing up is that he advocates a strict homeopathic system of medical care and an unbalanced meat-only diet. These misconceptions can be corrected by reading the first few chapters.Atkins actually gives well-reasoned explanations of his philosophy of Complementary medicine, an approach that stresses prevention via good dietary habits, vitamin supplements and exercise, then homeopathic and vitamin remedies when there is a problem, and finally traditional medicine when all else fails (Yeah, he's a quack all right!).Without going into the details and logistics here, I was impressed with how logical and simple to apply this system is.
Where Atkins' detractors have hung up on most is the section on diet and how our last 150 years or so of history have affected it.From our pre-industrial food options though the Twentieth Century's sudden proliferation of processed flour and sugar, we can trace the steady rise of heart disease, obesity, tooth decay and Type 2 diabetes.Worse, the industries that stood to profit from the "deadly duo" (and other starchy carb-based foods that were taking the place of meats, eggs, butter and cheese as the bulk of our diets) greatly influenced the medical profession's research and findings. The resulting decline of our national health is a bitter legacy to take responsibility for, and that is just what too many of our processed food makers, doctors, pharmaceutical companies and health experts would have to do once they conceded that Atkins may indeed have been right. For that reason, such an admission may be decades in coming.
Whether or not you find yourself agreeing with that area of Atkins' theory, the book presents sound arguments and encourages a lifestyle that has improved untold lives over the past 30 years. There are changes you can make that will lower your blood pressure, bad cholesterol and triglycerides, eliminate systemic yeast infections, reverse diabetes and re-energize you - all without the use of drugs. In fact, you will probably end up being able to ditch the drugs you are on now.
I believe that someday Dr. Atkins vitamin and diet principles will be the standard recommendations from the health industry. It is hard to argue with the steadily growing segment of our population that simply gets lasting results by using them, and expands slowly via word of mouth.Meanwhile, those happy few of us will continue to benefit from the work done by this incredible man and his steadfast campaigning on our behalf before a tragic head wound took his life a few months ago.
Rest in peace, Doctor.
-Andrea, aka Merribelle.

Review of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, Revised Edition (Hardcover)

As a health practitioner and a patient of Dr. Atkins' since 1974, I've been aware of the controversy surrounding Dr. Atkins for a long time.I was a 12-year-old with a 350 cholesterol, who was well on his way to beinga 14 or 15-year-old dead from a heart attack.Dr. Atkins put me on thatoh-so-maligned diet of his, and in three months of no-sugar/no-carbs,high-fat/high-protein, my cholesterol dropped from 350 to 210.I've yet,in all the years since, to see another diet, or a drug for that matter, that can claim the same results.I've also never seen someone who hashelped so many people go through such a sustained assault from the medicalmainstream and the media. This extraordinary book not only updates thework he's been doing for the past 30 years; it cites extensive researchthat backs up his positions.(One of the ongoing attacks, for years, wasthat he based his conclusions solely on his 35,000 + patients, and nevercited actual clinical studies.)
One of the most compelling parts of thebook is the section on heart health/cholesterol--one of the topics forwhich he has consistently taken the most heat.He shows dramatically howmuch of the mainstream theory is being disproven by more and more studies:fat is not the enemy; sugar and high carbs (especially refined carbs) aremore dangerous by far.
The other major gripe I have with the receptionof this book is the assumption that the extreme low-carb approach is whatDr. Atkins advocates for everybody.Read more carefully, folks: that's theWEIGHT LOSS program.Once your weight is where you want it, you begin toeat more whole grain complex carbs and fruit (brown rice, millet, and thelike, as opposed to refined carbs such as pastas and breads, andconcentrated sugars such as fruit juices, honey, etc.) to halt the weightloss process. The book explains this very clearly.
One of the otherconsistent things I hear is the danger of consuming so much animal productsgiven the horrible amounts of toxic chemicals pumped into commerciallyraised livestock (growth hormones, antibiotics, etc.)Again, read morecarefully: at least 15 years ago, Dr. Atkins was among the first voices inthis country to advocate ORGANIC meat and poultry--back when such a thingwas largely unheard of.Yes, it's a bit more expensive, and in some areasharder to find; but isn't your health worth it?
Will Dr. Atkins everadvise you to eat a pint of Ben and Jerry's once a week? Not likely.Butthe powers that be have put on their blinders, and cite only the parts ofAtkins' philosophy that suit their own intransigent purposes.Meanwhile aweek doesn't go by when several clients come through my door and tell me,unsolicited, how since they've come off the high-carb/low-fat approach andincorporated more protein into their diets, they're feeling like humanbeings again for the first time in years.... more energy, greater mentalclarity, better emotional stability/less depression, and long-term achesand pains beginning to disappear.Think for yourselves; experiment, andlisten to your own bodies!
Read this book with an open heart and learn.
