Review of Arthritis and Common Sense (Fireside Book) (Paperback)

This book saved my life! I highly reccomend it! 20 yrs ago when I was 30 I could barely walk. I was always in so much pain... every dang joint in my body! Now I am totally healthy at 50!!! The book does talk about exercise...not to do it unless your joints are oiled!! It would be like starting a car without oil...the moving parts would be damaged. Exercise when you're healed! Follow the guidelines in this book & your joints will be oiled! It worked for me! I just wonder where I would be today without my dad giving me this book 20 yrs ago.

I actually met Carole Carson and THEN read her book.Believe me, seeing the "after" first had a great impact on me.I never could have imagined the "before" Carole. She went from a pleasantly round grandmotherly type to a toned, energetic, athletic and strikingly attractive woman who looks like she could take on the world! Oh, did I mention that I met her on a tennis court in the Hawaiian Islands?My group was so impressed with her play, confidence and effervesence. Imagine my surprise when I read her book. Review of The 3-Apple-a-Day Plan: Your Foundation for Permanent Fat Loss (Paperback)

The Apple Diet is essentially a low fat diet with a twist. Dieters on the plan eat three apples a day - one prior to each meal.

The premise behind the diet is a simple one. You eat an apple that fills you up with fiber, water and other nutrients and thus reduce your appetite. Apples pack a lot of benefits in a low calorie package.

This plan also includes a moderate calorie, low fat diet. Sample 1500 day includes apple, omelet, and oatmeal for breakfast, non fat cottage cheese and non fat yogurt for a snack. Chicken, broccoli, brown rice and apple for lunch, cappuccino shake for mid afternoon snack and dinner of salmon salad and you guessed it - an apple.

The plan also includes lots of exercise. Cardiovascular, and weight training with squats, lunges, chest presses etc.

The book makes it sound easy. Just eat your apples and voila..simple weight loss. In truth the plan would be very difficult for the average person looking to lose lbs. to stick with for the long haul and keep the weight off.

The diet reminds me of Bill Phillips initial Body for Life plan only not as good. Bill's initial diet included eating very clean ie chicken breast, brown rice, non starchy veggies etc. but it allowed for more fat. The Apple Diet plan is under 20% fat. Bill's plan has also expanded to include his new Eating For Life cookbook with tons of great tasting recipes. The recipes are far more interesting and easy to stick to than the ones in the Apple Diet.

Bill also allows for one cheat night. With the Apple Diet you get nothing..Nada..no chocolate, no ice cream, no dippin dots. Just grilled this or steamed that. How boring is that!
So yes this will work if you are hard core ready for intense clean eating. But if you want a little bit more laxity and interest try Bill's plan instead or if you are the average Mr. or Ms. trying to lose weight, up your protein some for satiation, count your calories but don't worry about being quite so perfect every day.

Another drawback to the plan is the apples. I like apples but THREE a day! Everyday!....hmmm could this diet be sponsored by companies like the Washington Apple Growers? Could this be a thinly disguised attempt to sell more apples.

Indeed we all agree that they have fiber and are good for us. BUT 3 per day?

Bottomline if you can eat very clean for the rest of your life and 3 apples every day..then this may be the perfect diet for you. If not...pick another plan.

Review of The Lupus Book: A Guide for Patients and Their Families (Hardcover)

The Lupus Book offers detailed information about lupus that is helpful for the newly diagnosed patient or, like my mother, for a lupus survivor of more than 20 years.It has become a "lupus Bible" for my mother and me, even after all the books we've read about lupus over the last 25years.The book includes example anecdotes, useful information ontreatments, and VITAL clinical information for each body system involved. Review of Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss (Paperback)

I respectfully disagree with those reviewers who claim there is nothing new in this book.They must have skipped to the last chapters and simply read the dietary recommendation at the end - and even those are different in both form and function.I have read, and been on, about every diet out there -- atkins, south beach, california, grapefruit - you name it.I have been on the Ultra Metabolism Phase 1 plan for 3 weeks, have lost 7 lbs - never feel hungry at all - but more importantly - I HAVE NEVER FELT BETTER!I didn't even know I felt that bad!

You must read this book from the beginning and then all the way through - taking each of the tests and determining the areas where your body is not functioning properly. I had no idea so many of my symptoms were tied to stress and cortisol release.I have a friend who had no idea she had hormone imballances but identified them and sought a functional medicine physician to correct them - and is ecstatic - and she was a vegetarian before she even read the book.I have another friend whose breast cancer physician had her read this book and go on the diet as part of her treatment!All three of us feel transformed.

I can't recommend this book enough.I was exercising 4 days a week ,hardly eating ANYTHING, and still gaining weight, and now I know WHY and what do to about it.If you will strictly adhere to the phase 1 guidelines ( which will require shopping at your local Whole Foods or natural foods market ), I bet you will lose weight and feel great doing it too.
