Review of An Extraordinary Power to Heal (Paperback)

I'd like to first, thank Dr. Semon for this book.An Extraordinary Power's approach has helped my son incredibly. Before I knew about the 4 stages, I never considered that the food I was preparing might in fact be harming my children. The book is well-laid out, and it gives a very comprehensive explanation as to why malt and other chemicals commonly found in foods are actually bad for us.My son was identified as mildly ADHD.This diagnosis was made and medication was recommended.Dr. Semon's book made it possible for us to change his diet (something we did very easily) and the difference in his behavior is remarkable! I was skeptical at first, but by following the first stage of the four stage diet, we saw an amazing difference in his ability to focus, and use self-control.Now, whenever we stray from the 1st Stage, we notice a spike in his hyperactivity. We get back to the 1st Stage, and he is once again in control. The book is well laid out and easy to follow. It is written in a language that is easy for anyone to understand and follow, and the chapters are written such that it doesn't need not be read in an exact order. An Extraordinary Power To Heal is exactly what it promises, a power to heal.I would highly recommend this book to any person or parent that is seeking help for ADHD or anyone who feels like they would like to improve their eating habits.

Product Description
An Extrardinary Power to Heal, by Bruce Semon, M.D., Ph.D., and Lori Kornblum, was written for people suffering from supposedly untreatable medical conditions. This book explains why yeast and yeast chemicals from the yeast in your intestines and in your food cause these conditions and how you can change your diet to stop them. An Extraordinary Power to Heal has explanations and case studies about so-called auto-immune conditions, including fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other conditions. An Extraordinary Power to Heal also has explanations and case studies about other medical conditions that respond to anti-yeast treatment, including Autism, ADHD and ADD, Tourette's Syndrome, depression, headaches, seizures, skin problems including eczema and psoriasis, allergies and food addiction. The case studies are of real patients who changed their lives by changing their diet and using anti-yeast therapy. An Extraordinary Power to Heal contains a complete treatment plan, and has comprehensive footnotes referencing medical studies that support the observations, case studies and explanations in the book. The companion cookbook, Extraordinary Foods for the Everyday Kitchen, has more than 125 recipes and more than 60 menus to help you implement the suggestions in An Extraordinary Power to Heal.

Review of Judaism and Vegetarianism (Paperback)

I have read this book thoroughly, and I think it is the most informative, most complete and most readable book about vegetarianism I have ever read. The book is very well structured, the information given is presented clearly and is up to date. Since I am a vegan, I have paid extra attention to what is being said about veganism, and I found the author is objective, accurate and gives sound advice. The B12 issue is dealt with in a responsible manner and I think it is very wise to present the transition to vegetarianism and from there to veganism as a process of growth, where every step counts. The author gives many practical suggestions on how to make changes in your lifestyle without losing touch with family or friends and manages to be firm and friendly at the same time. These things alone make the book a purchase well worth the investment. For me, however, the particular merit of the book lies in the spiritual values that have inspired it. Reading the book from a non-Jewish perspective, what struck me most was that the author has chosen focal points which are relevant to people from all kinds of different backgrounds, Jews, Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists and people who are not religious in the 'traditional' sense. In short, all those who are concerned about the way we relate to our environment from a spiritual point of view. The first focal point is that ethical considerations are more important than habit, convenience, or tradition, and the second is that there will be a price to pay if we chose to ignore the ethical imperative to change our ways. There are many books explaining why it is better for your body to become a vegetarian; there are not many books explaining why it is better for your soul. Richard Schwartz makes the reader see how the themes of inclusion and compassion towards animals are woven all through the Torah. Having read theology at a fairly orthodox Christian college, I have often heard the argument that `since Man was created in the image of God, he was given dominion over all creation' as an excuse for the maltreatment of animals and their reduction to `meat-producing units'. Guided by Richard Schwartz, we are shown that according to the Torah both man and beast are creatures of God, and that our being created in the image of God is not a given, but rather a potential; something to be brought into manifestation by following the pattern God has laid out for us, and that one of the qualities we must manifest is compassion. Instead of feeling very proud of ourselves and thinking that we are like God already, we should realise that we are asked to imitate God in love and concern for all living beings. Instead of 'dominion' we should read 'compassionate stewardship', and that is something else entirely. From the idea of our potential for goodness and compassion, the theme of responsibility is developed. The author shows us how we are responsible, in the sense of being accountable for the wrongs we do not try to stop. By means of the voice of Amos and other prophets he poignantly asks how we can be content and comfortable while others are in great distress, humans or non-humans. I feel that now Europe has recently been plagued by BSE and foot-and-mouth disease, and we have watched the horrors of what is happening every night on television, this question is more pressing than ever. How are we to answer for these things? That is one side of responsibility. The other side is that human beings are called to do justice, to liberate the oppressed, to care for every living being and that it is the way we act in this world, the choices we make and the goals we chose, which form our answer, our response, to God. For me, our human capacity to answer to this call is the basis of faith in a better future for all beings and Richard Schwartz's book has given me every reason not to give up believing. Human beings have the potential to be compassionate and just, and they can learn how to express these qualities. And they will learn more willingly if they are given the facts about oppression and hunger and are shown ways how to change. This is exactly what Richard Schwartz has done. Like the good teacher he is, he shows people what their calling is, where they go wrong, and what they can do to change for the better. This calling is not just for Jews; many people feel that they have a responsibility for the planet and for all that lives there; they just don't know what exactly is going wrong and how to make it better. By enumerating the facts, by showing the consequences of present practices, and by showing the way out, Richard Schwartz makes a very strong case for the vegetarian imperative, no matter what the reader's religion is. I sincerely recommend the book.

Review of Conscious Eating (Paperback)

This book is one of the best health books I've ever read, no question about it.It combines pretty much every diet fad you've ever heard about into a raw, living food diet.
In this book, Cousens teaches us how to follow the Ayurvedic principles through a 80-90% raw food diet.He also teaches us how to individualize our diets for our metabolic body types. This is one of the only books I know that teaches how to individualize diet for a vegetarian.
The book covers religion, meditation, toxins in our environment, and has a nice living foods recipe section in the back of the book. The nice thing about it, is that with the recipes, he doesn't try to offer dishes that are similiar to those which are cooked.I see a lot of vegetarian recipe books doing that."Try our delicious all vegan pizza!" and of course, it tastes no better than a branch off of the Maple tree in my back yard. These recipes offer new tastes.
I like a particular section in the book where Cousens tries to explain the logic behind why people think he looks much more unhealthy now than when he did when he was a bulky college football player. We live in such an obesce society, that someone of a healthy weight appears too slim, or unhealthy.Because Cousens doesn't have a pot belly, and sagging male breasts, many people say he looks "thin and puny".This book teaches us thatthrough living foods, we can sculpt and shape our bodies pretty much any way we'd like.He chooses not to be muscular anymore, because he feels he has no need for 30 extra pounds of muscle. Steven Arlin on the other hand, is 230 lbs, and likes to feel big and strong.
All in all, this book takes you on a journey through the fascinating world of raw, living foods. It could change your way of thinking.

Review of The Liver-Cleansing Diet (Paperback)

After coming back from holidays 3kg heavier than my NORMAL 92kg (206lbs) (which is over 15kgs more than my recommended body weight to my height of 5'8") I put myself onto Dr Cabot's Liver-Cleansing Diet on a days notice. Why did I choose the LCD?I didn't have to sign up on anything or go to groups or meetings etc.I had a list of what I could eat and what I couldn't eat and I stuck to it like a zealot. In the course of the eight weeks I lost 13kg's (29lbs) getting myself down from 95kgs to 82kgs (183lbs)!
This proved to me that not only was I well and truly overweight but that my eating habits were absolutely shocking and needed a change.AND I did not starve myself either.I did try to modify the amount of food I ate because not only was the problem what I was eating, but how much, but I never starved myself or went hungry. If I felt like something to eat out of normal meals I would just blend up a banana & soya milk smoothie with frozen bananas and a dollop of natural honey (try it!).
I have two recommendations for people doing this diet.
1: Stick to it religiously, if you allow yourself butter here and there or some greasy chips at a party you will find it too easy to stray from the diet.Dr Cabot says in the book you are allowed the odd indiscretion, but I found for me personally it had to be all or nothing.
2: If you have a partner (wife/husband/etc) then they really should do it as well because the temptation is great to have the food they get to eat.I know this now because I am on the diet for a second time to try and get my weight to around 77kg (172lbs) but my wife is not joining me AS MUCH as the first time round because she doesn't need too (55kg).Seeing that bottle of coke when you are reaching for that soy milk, or that block of cheese sitting next to that block of tofu makes for some mighty effort in willpower but I am sticking to my guns!
Good luck!

Review of The Ketogenic Diet: A Complete Guide for the Dieter and Practitioner (Spiral-bound)

I have been looking for a diet book like this for years.Since I've been involved in weight lifting I have tried to read as much as possible about various diet methods. When low-carb diets became popular I was skeptical, but wanted to learn more.I read through the material I could find onlineand just finished "The Greenwich Diet".In all cases I foundmyself totally unsatisfied with everything I read.Every book pitched it'sparticular take on the low carb diet as a miracle cure and didn't providemuch information about what was really happening to your body.I decidedto give "The Ketogenic Diet" a try and was stunned -- it is themost complete diet book I have come across.I finally understand how manytypes of diets work (not just low carb diets).
McDonald begins with ahistory of ketogenic diets and then goes into a detailed explanation of howvarious nutrients (both macro and micro) affect your body. After thisexplanation he presents three versions of the ketogenic diet, with two ofthe diets aimed at athletic individuals who are looking to maintain theirexercise performance while on one of these programs. Each diet isaccompanied by detail information about how to implement the diet.
As Ihave said, the material in this book is incredibly detailed and completed, but what really makes this book worth 5 stars is that the information ispresented in a non-biased way.According to the introduction, McDonaldwrote this book to clear confusion about ketogenic diets, not to championthem.Much of the material is accompanied by research references andMcDonald clearly states where research is lacking or where he is offeringhis own opinion.
Overall, "The Ketogenic Diet" will make anexcellent addition to any dieter's collection of reading. Also, if you areconsidering a ketogenic diet this will gives you an unbiased view of howthey really work.

Product Description
'The Ketogenic Diet' is a complete resource for anyone interested in low-carbohydrate diets (such as the Atkins Diet, Protein Power, Bodyopus or the Anabolic Diet). It looks objectively at the physiology behind such diets, including potential negative effects, and gives specific recommendations on how to optimize such a diet assuming an individual has chosen to do one.Two modified ketogenic diets (which involve the insertion of carbohydrates to sustain exercise performance) are also discussed in detail, along with specific guidelines.Exercise is discussed in great detail, including background physiology, the effects of exercise on fat loss, exercise guidelines and sample workouts. A great deal of basic physiology information, dealing with both nutrition and exercise topics, is included so that readers without a technical background will be able to understand the topics discussed.
