Review of The Baby Boomers' Guide to Living Forever (Paperback)

At first blush most of the information if acted on in the book will probably result in adding years, if not decades to some peoples lives. My own recommendation is to do your own independent research [separate from this book], first, if you make any life changing adjustments, particularly if it involves consuming vitamins suggested in the book. Some of the recommendations only strengthened what I already knew, such as taking Co-Q10 on a daily basis.Co-Q10 is expensive, but a very good nutrient that can help protect your body from free radical damage, resulting in reduced risks of succumbing to various cancers and heart diseases.Other recommendations in the book did raise some concerns for me such as consuming L-Carnosine on a daily basis.Research i've found dating back to 1984 expressed that L-Carnosine built up in the body can potentially have dangerous neurotoxic side effects.Taking too much of it could induce what is medically referred to as "Carnosinemia", which also can be inherited. Most of the oral vitamin supplements in the market offer L-Carnosine at 500MG doses, recommending you take it once or twice daily. The book recommends 200MG per day in single or "divided doses" and stressed "its low level of toxicity"...... but I don't know how much is too much frankly, so I will avoid this particular molecule until more research data is known.

Product Description

Review of Total Body Transformation: A 3-Month Personal Fitness Prescription For a Strong, Lean Body and a Calmer Mind (Paperback)

Mr. Ilg will get you in shape physically and mentally, guaranteed.
I approached his book from a reformed weightlifter/runner to now a yogi/runner's perspective.
First the yoga information:
Many modern and not-so modern yogis claim that yoga is all anyone needs as far as exercise, but I completely disagree.Despite their attention to bandhas, tai chi like connecting movements, and yoga breathing, I don't think yoga alone is a cardiovascular workout. Moreover, I don't feel that the combination of low plank, high plank, crow, and handstands is enough to develop upper body strength. If you look at most yogis (no offense, please) such as Steve Ross (Inhale on Oxygen 6 a.m. weekdays), Bikram Choudury, and others, they don't look very strong. The best in this area to me has been Baron Baptiste (he of the ubiquitous bandana) and his attention to "functional strength."
Fortunately, Mr. Ilg politely calls the yogi community out on this subject and carefully illustrates the need to "strength train" in addition to yoga.
His High Performance Yoga (trademarked I believe) still uses these poses, but as a complement to the work in the gym. Also, his yoga routine is functional not fancy, incorporating all the sun salutations and warrior poses, as well spinal twists, backbends, forward bends, and inversions.Maybe most importantly he introduced me to a pose not found in many yoga books and not on Yoga Journal's website pose section:the yoga squat (this should be called the Ilg squat). It's a fantastic pose.
As for Mr. Ilg's strength training advice:solid and proven. He limits between set rest to 30 seconds and does power movements such as squats, stiff-legged deadlifts, benches, military presses, etc.No high rep,"shaping movements" fluff here.
His cardio advice is also great. No "just gardening is cardio" or park your car in a farther spot blather, but rather a discussion on the necessity of hard training such as bicycling, running, and more.
Mr. Ilg gets very, very, very deep into the meditation and spiritual"stuff."He loses me here, but that is my weakness.Hopefully, you will be able to embrace this important area.
Another area Mr. Ilg recommends that I could not survive:media fasting.I'm sorry, but I have to read the Journal/Times daily or I feel lost.If you can do this, your journey will be more advanced than mine.He doesn't say you have to do it daily, of course.
Nutritionally, I can't personally see eliminating meat & dairy without some heavy protein supplementation. If I'm training two-three hours daily (Mr. Ilg's recommendation), I don't see how a diet high in fiber and natural foods other than meat and dairy can provide enough protein. He may be right; it's just not for me.
Please, if you are considering getting "fit" realize that cardio, strength training, or yoga alone will NOT be enough individually. You have to combine all three (throw in meditation if you can and of course nutrition).Based on those proven facts, please welcome Coach Ilg into your life. You will save a lot of money purchasing this one book, instead of several for strength training, cardio, and the often incomplete yoga books. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks for reading.

P.S.Attentive readers may note that I previously reviewed this tome.I used some unfortunate and inappropriate words at the time.I apologize to Mr. Ilg and the Amazon community for that.Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa.

Updated 11.25.05.For some reason when you Yahoo, Google, A9 yoga squat this review comes up, so I want to add a little bit more information.
I still don't understand why more yoga tomes don't discuss the yoga squat, so I want reemphasize how much I appreciate Mr.Ilg's contribution.I do the yoga squat at least 10 times a day (always at least a minute). When I get two minutes during work I do it followed by a one minute forward bend. The yoga squat seems to put my whole body back into line and it unleashes an "energy flow".Also, during my reqularly scheduled two daily workouts, I do yoga squats holding a 25 or 35 pound plate for 2-3 minutes. It deepens the pose and feels fantastic.Everyone should do the yoga squat (knee pain sufferers excluded, although it may help actually).

Update 12.6.06.I just wanted to add another item to the Ilg Squat/yoga squat. The great Steve Ross on his fantastic yoga show Inhale(Oxygen M-F 6 a.m. EST) showed a version of the yoga squat designed to deepen the pose.He just set his feet very wide apart and squatted down.Turning your toes out may help some people. It felt awesome.

Again, big thanks to Mr. Ilg to paying attention to this incredibly important asana.

Review of Living With Dietary Fructose Intolerance: A Guide to Managing your Life With this New Diagnosis (Paperback)

As a fellow sufferer of this condition, I was eager to read any tips and information I could find on this difficult to diagnose and almost impossible to eat around problem. My doctor gave me little to go on, and I've been scraping for info ever since.I belong to a couple online forums which have helped immensely, as those similiarly afflicted share what they've discovered with the groups, but that's about it.

What I'd hoped for in this book was an in depth view of what it's like to have the condition, ideas for eating, lists of sources of information, perhaps charts of fructose/sorbitol levels in different foods, and something beyond what my doctor first gave me when my test came back overwhelmingly positive. What I got was something hardly larger than a pamphlet, with little more than what I'd figured out on my own in the first week after my diagnosis.Oh yeah, and a bunch of recipes. After about 25 pages, this book is just a bunch of mainly milk-product-based recipes. These help me not one bit, as I am also lactose intolerant. (the author assumes many will also have a wheat allergy, not sure why, but ignores the possibility of lactose intolerance, which our forums have concluded are very common together) I didn't want a recipe book, but the bulk of this "book" is just that. :(

Good intentions, but the book is sadly quite basic. If you have food intolerances, try finding an MSN Forum for them first before buying anything.Real people interacting with you daily can provide the real information this author was trying to give.

Review of Eat by Choice, Not by Habit: Practical Skills for Creating a Healthy Relationship with Your Body and Food (Paperback)

I loved this book! Eat by Choice, Not by Habit offers the reader the opportunity to gently look at the relationship we have with ourselves, in particular, with our food choices.

The author wants to inspire each of us to take responsibility for our lives and become more conscious of what we are doing, and how we are meeting our needs.I agree with Ms. Haskvitz that we have the wisdom within to make healthy choices, and her book gives us permission to further access this inner voice, while giving us some practical knowledge and skills.

Buy this gift for your best friend (we all need to become our own best friend), and allow a new chapter to be written in your life, one that will give you a longer, more balanced, and healthier life. You deserve it!
Marcia Breitenbach, founder of [...]

Product Description
Combining sound dietary information with the techniques of the Nonviolent Communication (NVC) process, this booklet shifts the focus from simple weight loss to changing the ways readers relate to food and their food choices. Eating is a need, but for those caught in cycles of over-consumption and dieting, it's often a poor attempt to meet other needs, such as emotional fulfillment. When reconnected to actual needs, however, consumption habits turn into nutritional choices, signaling greater freedom.
Find practical strategies to break out of unhealthy eating cycles by becoming aware of your needs. Rather than a proscriptive fad diet, readers learn to dig deeper to the emotional consciousness that underlies our eating patterns. Learn to enjoy the tastes, smells and sensations of healthful eating once again.

Review of The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding: Seventh Revised Edition (La Leche League International Book) (Paperback)

I had a much older edition of this book when I was pregnant with my first child almost 10 years ago and I read it and countless other pregnancy, breastfeeding and parenting books. I passed along the older version to a pregnant friend after the birth of my youngest in 2002; I thought I knew all I needed to know after successfully breastfeeding my first and continuing to breastfeed my youngest. Some recent problems led me to borrow the new 7th Revised Edition from a LLL meeting and I wish I had a newer edition before my second son was born. I learned so much about recent scientific discoveries about breastfeeding and the healthful properties of human milk. I could have avoided alot of heartbreak and anxiety in the hospital if I'd known all this and read it prior to his birth. The hospital was not very friendly to breastfeeding and if I had not already had the positive experience with my first son, I probably would have let them convince me of the need for bottles. As it was, we had a very difficult time in the first few weeks, which could have been avoided with the knowledge and information contained in this book. I urge you to read it, especially if you are considering nursing. And even if you plan to feed your baby formula, it may change your mind! And bring it with you to the hospital to use as a resource and to back up your requests to nurses to NOT give your baby sugar water, formula or a pacifier. The scientific information and references provided should give you all the support you need.

Product Description
All parents want the best for their babies, and there's no doubt about the fact that human milk is the ideal food for human babies. What's the secret of successful breastfeeding? For almost fifty years mothers who have been in touch with La Leche League have found the kind of information and support they needed to breastfeed their babies.
In this newly revised edition of The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, you will learn:

- How human milk offers lifetime benefits for your baby
- How to prepare for breastfeeding during pregnancy
- How to exercise and lose weight safely while nursing
- How to find time for yourself while meeting baby's needs
- How to increase your milk supply by using herbs and medications
- How to be sure your baby is getting enough to eat

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding was the first book of its kind, written for mothers by mothers. Over the years, more than two million mothers have turned to it for information and inspiration.

Review of Sugars That Heal: The New Healing Science of Glyconutrients (Paperback)

We are increasingly learning that the changes in our diet in the last 100 years towards more processed foods are undermining our health. We get too much of some things (like saturated fats, white flour, and simple sugars) and not enough of other things (like essential fatty acids, vegetables, fruits, and water). Sugars That Heal describes the evidence that is building that some people are having their health undermined by consuming too few of certain essential sugars (such as mannose, xylose, fucose, N-acetylglucosamine, N-acetylgalactosamine, and N-acetylneuraminic acid. These sugars have many important functions in the body, several of which relate to the proper functioning of the immune system and the nervous sytem.
In a healthy body not under stress, all of these sugars can be created using enzymes in the body from simple sugars like glucose. In bodies under stress, it appears that these enzymes become short in supply for converting sugars and the body receives too few of the essential sugars that are missing from the diet. These sugars need only be consumed in small quantities, and do not affect glycemic levels in the blood.<P The book describes how the importance of these sugars was discovered over the last 100 years, beginning with the use of vaccines to attack cancers by Dr. William Coley. The active ingredient in these successful vaccines was found to be a lipopolysaccharide by the National Cancer Institute in 1943. By taking the fat molecule off of the sugar, the resulting compound was easier to absorb without negative body reactions.
Essential sugars are found in many food sources including aloe vera, corn, wheat, leeks, carrots, radishes, red wine, coconut meat, tomatoes, breast milk, apples and grapefruit. There are also various supplements you can buy. The book describes which ones to buy, and how to start taking the supplements. You are encouraged to work with your physician if you take these supplements. They may not be appropriate for pregnant and nursing women, those on blood thinners, and those taking Indocin. If you are allergic to any of these foods or to the ingredients in the supplements, you can have an allergic reaction. Some people will also experience loose bowel movements and other side effects from the supplements.
I thought that the weakest part of the book was in not providing more information about how to create the minimum sugar consumption solely through food.
There are extensive discussions of how these essential sugars may help people with various illnesses including arthritis, diabetes, kidney failure, heart failure, hepatitis, various cancers (including reducing the side effects of cancer treatments), HIV, and high blood pressure. The book also discusses how these sugars may improve the functioning of joints (by rebuilding cartilage), memory, weight loss, and energy levels (for those with chronic fatigue syndrome and Fibromyalgia).
In most cases, these are in vitro and animal studies with the sugars, so how they will work on humans isn't known yet. However, Dr. Mondoa does describe individual case histories based on his clinical practice. In other cases, there are human studies. One of the most impressive was in China with reversing declining kidney functions. Another one with children in the United States showed a reduced rate of colds. Yet another shows that cartilage can be regrown. Another human study shows that aloe vera helps with Type II diabetes, cholesterol and triglycerides. So, there's probably something there, but we really won't know the full scope of what it is until many more human trials occur. Presumably, the next twenty years will fill in many of the gaps. In the meantime, it certainly looks like a wise thing to do to be sure that you are not lacking in these essential sugars.
I plan to share this book with all those I know who are suffering from the diseases mentioned here. I think this information is not well known in the medical community. For example, my father was experiencing loss of kidney function. His nephrologist at a well-known teaching hospital told my father he would be on dialysis within six months, and that diet didn't help. Yet there was already a Chinese study of humans showing that diet was very helpful. Ignorant of the Chinese study, my father changed his diet to include more fruits and vegetables of the sort described in the book and was back to full kidney function within a few months. The nephrologist never did understand what happened, and just told my father to keep doing whatever he was doing. I found the descriptions of the research to be very carefully articulated. So if you take this book along to your physician, she or he should be able to find the information to decide if some dietary or supplement changes would be in order. Since so many people are on blood thinners, these changes will have to be carefully done for those people. Since these sugars may help conditions requiring the blood thinners, perhaps some patients may be able to stop with the blood thinners at some point. Your physician can help you make a good decision.
Although this book doesn't talk about exercise, that is also an important component of any recovery program.
After you finish reading this book and decide what to do next to improve your health, I suggest you also think about how you can fill your day and mind with more healthful experiences and thoughts. Whom have you shown love to today? Whom have you given an essential hug to? Whom have you complimented who needed to be encouraged? Whom have you prayed for?
All of these ways of sharing will make you feel better too! Fill your life with all the essentials!

Stability balls challenge the neuromuscular system. The ball may be

shoulder, forearm and grip. A strength of the work is that the
author depicts the exercises in a series of drawings. The acquisition
would be invaluable for anyone embarking on an intensive exercise

Review of The Health Detective's 456 Most Powerful Healing Secrets (Paperback)

The book is so informative especially about product knowledge and usage and where to find sources that these products/nutrients can be found. Review of The Liver-Cleansing Diet (Paperback)

After coming back from holidays 3kg heavier than my NORMAL 92kg (206lbs) (which is over 15kgs more than my recommended body weight to my height of 5'8") I put myself onto Dr Cabot's Liver-Cleansing Diet on a days notice. Why did I choose the LCD?I didn't have to sign up on anything or go to groups or meetings etc.I had a list of what I could eat and what I couldn't eat and I stuck to it like a zealot. In the course of the eight weeks I lost 13kg's (29lbs) getting myself down from 95kgs to 82kgs (183lbs)!
This proved to me that not only was I well and truly overweight but that my eating habits were absolutely shocking and needed a change.AND I did not starve myself either.I did try to modify the amount of food I ate because not only was the problem what I was eating, but how much, but I never starved myself or went hungry. If I felt like something to eat out of normal meals I would just blend up a banana & soya milk smoothie with frozen bananas and a dollop of natural honey (try it!).
I have two recommendations for people doing this diet.
1: Stick to it religiously, if you allow yourself butter here and there or some greasy chips at a party you will find it too easy to stray from the diet.Dr Cabot says in the book you are allowed the odd indiscretion, but I found for me personally it had to be all or nothing.
2: If you have a partner (wife/husband/etc) then they really should do it as well because the temptation is great to have the food they get to eat.I know this now because I am on the diet for a second time to try and get my weight to around 77kg (172lbs) but my wife is not joining me AS MUCH as the first time round because she doesn't need too (55kg).Seeing that bottle of coke when you are reaching for that soy milk, or that block of cheese sitting next to that block of tofu makes for some mighty effort in willpower but I am sticking to my guns!
Good luck!
