Review of The Food & Mood Cookbook: Recipes for Eating Well and Feeling Your Best (Paperback)

This cookbook is one of the best I've come by for people who have average to above average cooking experience and who are looking for very tasty, healthy meals.Everything I've made from this book has come out excellent and the ingredients are common to most cooks' kitchens, so you don't have to search extensively for exotic spices, etc. With some slight modifications, I have been able to improve a number of these recipes based on my individual tastes.I'm particularly fond of the soups and find that they are extremely quick and easy to make.

Enjoy and eat well!

Review of Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners: Familiar Western Food Prepared with Ayurvedic Principles (Paperback)

I own this book (ACFW) and The Ayurvedic Cookbook (TAC) and I must say that I rarely open this one, while I use at least 3 recipes out of TAC every week. The problem is that while this book stays true to the principles of Ayurvedia, the recipes aren't as tasty as they could be.This book tends to follow the Western macrobiotic ideals of "steam some rice, steam some veggies, let's eat", where TAC uses a wide array of spices.Comparing side by side similiar recipes, TAC's carrots and parsnips has about a half dozen spices, while ACFW's carrots, parsnips and peas has none.Which do you want to eat? This comparison is valid for many other recipes as well, which is somewhat disturbing given the importance TAC places on spices as a part of Ayurvedia. This book seems aimed at the more political/masochistic Western vegetarian (there is a sidebar on being nice to meat-eaters) who sees bland food as some kind of right of passage. While there's good information on Ayurvedia, you can do better with The Ayurvedic Cookbook.

Product Description
Amadea Morningstar, co-author of the bestselling Ayurvedic Cookbook, receivedmany requests for Western recipes that utilized Ayurvedic principles.Well, here it is!This is a "one of a kind" book that is sure to be a strongbestseller and represents a dramatic enhancement for people who want to practice Ayurvedic health practices in the West.

Review of Full Moon Feast: Food and the Hunger for Connection (Paperback)

This book is a personal re-examination of food--what we eat, and why we eat it. In this book, Prentice examines food customs and traditions, searching for their physiological and environmental rationale. Her primary observation about food traditions is that they are strictly tied to the seasons, and thus the continual year-round availability of our foodstuffs has resulted in loss of much traditional knowledge about what is good for us and what isn't.In recognition of the essential seasonality of foods, Prentice organizes this book into the thirteen moons that make up the year, from the famine moon, to the sap moon, from the egg moon to the corn moon, from the blood moon to the wolf moon.

Each chapter describes the ecology that led to the association between a particular food item and a specific time of the year.In the chapters, Prentice discusses the nutritional contributions of the featured food items, and how her relationship with that food has changed over the years. For example, she explains how she used to avoid milk and other dairy products, but now relishes them as a gift of love from Mother Earth. Each chapter also includes recipes of the season, ranging from exotic dishes of non-Western food cultures, like Cardamom and Jaggery pudding, to simple directions for lost arts, such as rendering pork, or making homemade yogurt and sauerkraut.

Prentice was once a strict vegan, who for health reasons, eventually found herself drawn to a diet which includes animal products, but not the products of industrial agriculture. There is much that vegetarians and vegans would not like in Prentice's essays, since she explains how her 10 years of vegetarianism were not healthy for her.Having had the same experience myself after being a vegetarian for 20 years, I can appreciate the wisdom in what she writes. While vegetarian diets work well for some, they are not appropriate for everybody. But at the same time, diets that include the consumption of industrially produced and processed animal products do nobody any good.We need to be willing to recognize our relation and responsibilities to the animals that we consume.

I first heard of this book when I attended a Vermont Localvore potluck at which Prentice was the invited guest chef.I was deeply offended then at her attitude, when she announced she was going to make a salad using a recipe from her book, but lamented the lack of local artichokes or olive oil.`How could such a person be associated with local cooking,' I wondered, `if she doesn't even have the sense to find out what the best local ingredients are and celebrate them, instead of parading the products of another region in front of us?'I figured that a seasonal local cookbook written by a national author would be a worthless concept.Fortunately, that's not what this book attempts--instead the book is much more about rediscovering our connection to food than about specific local recipes.

Although she has become famous for leading the concept of eating foods only from one's local region, what she urges here is really an appreciation for the products of small farms. Thus, instead of simply cheering on local food, Prentice argues in this book that our industrial agriculture system has torn us away from one of the most essential of human traits, our relationship to the food that nourishes us.Instead of following diets of avoidance, Prentice advocates recognizing the meaning that each item of food brings to our lives, and using food to re-establish our connection to the land.Indeed, the only foods that Prentice avoids are those heavily processed products of industrial agriculture: refined sugar, white flour, and pre-packaged extruded junk.Although the book contains a few recipes, it is not a cookbook, but rather a wake-up call: "Our poor diet is at least partly a physical manifestation of a spiritual decay," together with some suggestions of how we can begin the journey back to healthy eating.

Product Description
In Full Moon Feast , accomplished chef and passionate food activist Jessica Prentice champions locally grown, humanely raised, nutrient-rich foods and traditional cooking methods. The book follows the thirteen lunar cycles of an agrarian year, from the midwinter Hunger Moon and the springtime sweetness of the Sap Moon to the bounty of the Moon When Salmon Return to Earth in autumn. Each chapter includes recipes that display the richly satisfying flavors of foods tied to the ancient rhythm of the seasons.
Prentice decries our modern food culture: megafarms and factories, the chemically processed ghosts of real foods in our diets, and the suffering-physical, emotional, cultural, communal, and spiritual-born of a disconnect from our food sources. She laments the system that is poisoning our bodies and our communities.
But Full Moon Feast is a celebration, not a dirge. Prentice has emerged from her own early struggles with food to offer health, nourishment, and fulfillment to her readers. She recounts her relationships with local farmers alongside ancient harvest legends and methods of food preparation from indigenous cultures around the world.
Combining the radical nutrition of Sally Fallon's Nourishing Traditions, keen agri-political acumen, and a spiritual sensibility that draws from indigenous as well as Western traditions, Full Moon Feast is a call to reconnect to our food, our land, and each other.

Review of Meal by Meal: 365 Daily Meditations for Finding Balance Through Mindful Eating (Paperback)

I was familiar with the work of Donald Altman from his earlier 'Art of the Inner Meal' and was impressed how his writing has found a fresh and densely pragmatic new form. 'Meal by Meal' is a fluid read of inspiring quotes coupled with practical insights by the author. This book is extremely handsome, a beautifully laid out composition making this both useful and pleasurable to read. If you have the discipline to read a page at a time, you will find this helpful day by day. I personally had trouble putting it down and would read a month at a time... but the suggestions are valid and useful on a second slower read. Worthwhile investment for someone wishing to calm their compulsive behavior for a more reflective perspective.

Product Description
Meal by Meal is a book of comfort, guidance, and insight for anyone with an unhealthy relationship with food. Its power is in its approach: each day is a self-contained journey of conscious eating to help people nurture new and sustainable attitudes and practices. Although bad habits cannot be changed overnight, the author, Buddhist devotee Donald Altman, shows how to find peace by focusing on food issues one meal at a time. He shares inspirational daily meditations, including quotes from Zen stories, Native American practices, Hindu scriptures, the Bible, and sages from all major wisdom traditions. He also explores food preparation, rituals, and social attitudes and examines questions like "How can we learn that eating is not a pleasure race, but an area to find grace?" and "How can we stop using food to fill ourselves up, and instead use it to fulfill ourselves?" Through daily reflections, Altman enables people to make wise food choices and create balance in their lives.

Review of The 5-Factor Diet (Paperback)

I will preface my review by noting that I have a full time job in a "professional" (management) atmosphere.I'm also a full time student at university, as well as member of the armed forces.I'm married, and I participate in extracurricular activities such as the performing arts and volunteer work.In a nutshell...I am a BUSY person. Also, I'm certainly no movie star or any other kind of star.I have found a way to MAKE this lifestyle work for me.It was a tremendous adjustment, and there are days that I'm very frustrated. However, the improvement in my overall well-being, as well as that of my husband, is worth every moment spent in the kitchen.

The most important thing to realize about this plan is that YOU are in control. No one counts for you...no one cooks for you...you are responsible for the menu choices you make, etc.I've been living this lifestyle for almost a year, and I will address two of the chief complaints I've heard about the eating plan.

1)"I don't have time to do the cooking...I need a professional chef!"First off, I am not a professional chef, and neither is my husband. We don't pay for anyone to come in and prepare our meals for us.Every Sunday, which is the "free" day we've chosen for ourselves, we go out and do the grocery shopping. We purchase all the ingredients we will need for the week. Then we go home and TOGETHER we prepare four of the meals for the next day.We select menu options that will be easy to reheat or require no reheating.(Quesadillas, pears with peanut butter, and the pita sandwiches are all favorite choices.)The next day, I use the microwave in the office breakroom to prepare my specialized meals.I don't take a break; I'm fortunate enough to have my own office and I simply eat my "snacks" at my desk. That evening when I get home, my husband and I share the time together to prepare dinner. After dinner, we take about an hour or so and prepare the next day's meals. This routine repeats itself Monday through Friday.Saturdays are nice because I have my own kitchen. However, if I know I'm going to have a busy Saturday, I prepare easy "on-the-go" meals the night before.I have read both of Harley's books, and I know the foods that are "five-factor" friendly, so if I happen to have a lunch meeting or dinner date, I order the appropriate meal from the restaurant I'm at.I usually also ask for a lunch portion so I'm not tempted to eat everything placed before me.(*Note:Most of the meals take five minutes to "prepare."This does NOT include cooking time.Read the recipes. If you don't have time to prepare a certain one in a certain amount of time, DON'T prepare it.)

2)"The ingredients are too expensive (or too hard to find)!"No they're not.I figure that with thirty meals a week, and spending approximately $120 on groceries per week, I'm spending four dollars a meal. That is cheaper than a fast food salad.Yes, some products are pricier than others.Sometimes I can't find a particular ingredient for a meal I really want to prepare.Well...YOU'RE in charge here.Select something different that is more within your price range. How much is your personal health worth, anyway?

Harley does not promote unhealthy habits such as diet pills, fasts, or diet shakes. He encourages lots of water intake. He promotes cardiovascular fitness coupled with strength training, which promotes general fitness and can help with bone density.(My husband and I choose to do a little more than he recommends, but we started out at the prescibed amount of exercise.)He explains the dangers of some artificial sweeteners and makes recommendations. However, he doesn't DEMAND you use a certain brand; he empowers you through the information provided to make an educated personal choice. He teaches about the science of certain foods and how they can help you feel fuller longer.I truly enjoyed READING this book. He's funny, and want's YOU to be in charge. There's a lot of good information, and I felt smarter about my health after reading it.It basically takes the US Dietary Guidelines (the food pyramid) and puts it into recipes FOR YOU, so you're getting what you need.

If you're not willing to make a significant change in your lifestyle, this plan is definitely not for you.If you're looking for a fad diet that will force you to lose weight fast, this plan is not for you.

He's laid the plan out so it's virtually fail-proof, and teaches you it's okay to "fall off the wagon."I can't tell you how much this book has changed my life...between my husband and I, we have lost over 60 pounds. But it didn't happen in a month, and it certainly didn't happen in a week.We followed the plan, exactly as written, for five entire weeks. This plan improved the way I FELT, because I was smarter about my eating choices; losing weight was a bonus!I felt so good that I MADE it work for my crazy busy life, and I'm delighted!

I've recommended this book to all my friends, and will recommend it to you as well.

Review of The Fat Fallacy: The French Diet Secrets to Permanent Weight Loss (Paperback)

I first spotted The Fat Fallacy in a bookstore at a time when I was feeling frustrated at not being able to shed those last 10 pounds after months of exercising more regularly than I ever had before and trying to eat low-fat.I was intrigued by the idea that I could eat foods I love - cheese, full-fat premium ice cream, and chocolate - all while losing weight.

It sounded almost too good to be true, but I'd seen firsthand from a trip to Paris that the French ate very differently from us yet stayed thin. Also, many of Will Clower's comments made a lot of sense intuitively.I decided to give it a try, hoping for the best, but promising to stop if it caused me to gain weight instead.

I tossed out the skim milk, "low-fat" cheese, and processed foods containing high-fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils and other artificial ingredients (you'd be amazed how many things include them!).To refill my pantry and refrigerator, I bought cream-top yogurt, whole milk, cheese, freshly baked french bread, good olive oil, high-quality dark chocolate, fresh vegetables, etc.I loved eating the new foods, found I didn't need to eat as much as before to feel satisfied, and was amazed at how quickly I saw the pounds start coming off.

Within just over a month of making the changes, I had lost the 10 pounds I'd been struggling with.Another 5 pounds that I wasn't even trying to lose came off in the following month, leaving me happily surprised to have dropped 3 clothing sizes.Wow!It's so wonderful to be able to enjoy food without guilt, and to be happy with my body at the same time!

I've since bought several copies of The Fat Fallacy to share with friends and family who've expressed interest.I'm always happy to be able to tell people about this book, as it encourages a healthy lifestyle rather than a "diet".It's definitely worth reading, and the recommendations seem so much healthier than some of today's trendier diets.Hope you'll read it and get as much out of it as I did!

Fat is not the enemy!

Croissants. Brioche. Brie. To the American palate, these foods are fattening and oftentimes "forbidden." Yet they are the regular staples of the French diet. And though almost half of all Americans are overweight, France's obesity rate is at a low eight percent, while the French also boast fewer cases of stroke and heart disease. It's clear that America's obsession with low-fat and fat-free foods has ultimately failed.
In The Fat Fallacy, neuroscientist Will Clower explains precisely why the American diet sabotages weight-loss efforts and discusses how French eating habits can lead to better health and trimmer physiques. In this revolutionary work, Dr. Clower explains:

- How highly processed "fake foods" are the real culprit in the American diet
- Why it's not just what you eat but how you eat that makes a difference
- Easy ways to adopt the habits of the French to melt the pounds away, including
complete dinner recipes-with dessert!

Finally, here's a plan that cuts through the high-protein/low-fat debate. It's not a gimmicky diet program but a way of life that will invite Americans to enjoy food like never before-while being healthier and trimmer than they ever could have imagined.

Review of The Wine and Food Lover's Diet: 28 Days of Delicious Weight Loss (Paperback)

I started Dr. Tirman's weight loss plan in January.Following the rapid weight loss plan of eating a protein + 2 super low glycemic foods (such as roasted chicken with butter sauteed mushrooms and grilled asparagus with grated parmesan cheese) AND wine, I lost 10 lbs in the first 2 weeks.Even after the rapid weight loss weeks when I was doing the maintenance plan, I shed 8 more lbs by following the book's principles, and am still losing weight.I worked out every once in awhile during the first 2 months and only recently started exercising more regularly.I even occasionally eat high glycemic foods such as bread and rice (because I would NOT be able to give up sushi), andstill have not gained any weight.Just pair your higher glycemic foods with low glycemic foods or make sure your next meal falls well within the plan's guidelines.

This is a great, easy to follow plan. The recipes are simple and delicious, and if you know the underlying principles, you can make dishes that aren't in the book, and eat out anywhere. This weight loss and maintenance plan is definitley a lifestyle change and not a fad "diet."

Product Description
Eat good food, drink a little wine, lose weight! Sounds too good to be true? Not with The Wine and Food Lover's Diet. Created by a sports doctor with a background in nutrition, this is a diet that combines healthful eating with a love of eating. Imagine a meal of bacon-topped arugula salad, pecan-crusted chicken paired with the perfect glass of wine, and closing with chocolate soufflé or some ice cream and a cup of coffee-and then, even better, looking at the decrease on the scales the next morning. Dr. Phillip Tirman's 28-day plan sheds the pounds and the diet angst. He knows that most diets fail because they're based on restricting the foods everyone loves the most and they're impractical for today's busy lifestyles. So he has developed a lifetime eating plan based on satisfaction, not deprivation. The key to feeling slimmer and healthier? It's the surefire combo that is the foundation of the diet: one protein + two low-glycemic carbs = success. Using this formula, Dr. Tirman has created a menu plan to jump-start weight loss. He clearly and simply describes why high-glycemic carbs promote weight gain, while low-glycemic carbs do the opposite. Included are handy lists of beneficial Savvy Carbs and Super Savvy Carbs, which make it easy to tailor the diet to anyone's tastes-plus 100 really delicious recipes with wine pairing suggestions, illustrated in full color. There's also clear advice for choosing take-out foods, for selecting diet-friendly restaurant dishes, and for using the diet to lose weight or simply to keep off the pounds already lost. The Wine and Food Lover's Diet is the ultimate key to a healthier, fuller, longer, and more satisfying life.

This is my favorite low carb recipe book.No crunch up pork rinds to pretend they are something else; real food without exotic ingredients requiring a trip to health food store. Two favorite recipes:Lasagna stuffed peppers and Strawberry Custard tarts. All the desserts do NOT consist of let's leave the crust off the pie and make a sugar free pudding filling.

Review of The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen (Paperback)

Okay, I admit it, I think a day without cheese is a waste of time. That said, I have to confess I'm really impressed with this book and its wealth of vegan recipes which literally made my mouth water as I read through them. The range of cuisines is quite good, and while there are a lot of ingredients and techniques in common, the variety here is quite wonderful. The recipes are clear and concise, and nothing seems outrageously difficult or time-consuming.These are recipes you'll use.The only reason I didn't give this book five stars is because I really do like a few illustrations. It's nice occasionally to know what a dish is supposed to look like.Even if you're a meat-eater, give this one a shot; at the very least you'll find a raft of side dishes guaranteed to enhance any meal.

Review of Whole Foods Diet Cookbook: 200 Recipes for Optimal Health (Paperback)

This book is more than a cookbook. It's more like a health book with recipes. With the guidelines the authors provide, an individual should be able to know which recipes out there are healthy, or modify existing recipes to make them healthier. I've only tried one recipe so far, but it was good and the others seem delicious as well. And what makes this book different from other health food cookbooks is that it provides healthy recipes for special occasions such as St. Patrick's Day and Thanksgiving. I don't think the authors had any control over this, but the only thing I would change is I would add pictures of the finished meals. It would help visual people like me.

Top it off with creamy, decadent, banana"Frosting", and it's "to die for"! "Peanut ButterSquares"?Move over Reese's!Great tasting desserts are hard to comeby--but you won't be wishing for them if you buy this book, and I haven'teven mentioned the great appetizers, breads, soups, salads, veggies, breakfast dishes, and entrees! You've got to have it!

    Product Description
This book contains real, great tasting, easy recipes. They are all low carb, no sugar, no flour recipes suitable for anyone following the Atkins diet, the Protein Power Plan, the Carbohydrate Addicts Diet, the Zone and the Neanderthin diet as well as those needing no sugar recipes for diabetic diets. When was the last time you ate a really good cookie without feeling guilty? Try the peanut butter cookie on page 150.
I know there are hundreds, if not thousands, of low carb recipes on the Internet. I've personally tried many of them. The problem I've found is that 1) they don't taste very good and I'm not wasting any of my carbs on something that is marginal, 2) the carb counts frequently aren't right and 3) they are too complicated.
(Note: All carb counts used in this cookbook have been obtained from the USDA Internet data base. See page 11 for address.)
I owned and operated a restaurant for six years to a daily packed house crowd and am well aware of pleasing the customer, repeatability and ease of a recipe, the need to be specific with ingredient brands and just plain eye appeal. I spent a lot of time doing up front developing on a recipe so it could be prepared by anyone from the instructions on the wall.
My best advise for anyone wanting to follow a low carb diet is to get the book of the plan you are going to follow and read the book -- all of it. There are a lot of self-proclaimed experts due to their experiences, but nothing can replace getting the facts from the real experts. Again, read the books.
