Review of Skinny Chicks Don't Eat Salads: Stop Starving, Start Eating and Losing (Hardcover)

The nutritional advice in this book is very sound.Maintaining blood sugar throughout the day is key to curbing cravings and mood swings.Being able to "indulge" in good carbs is a blessing in itself! However, beware that those 4-5 recommeded "meals" per day can be no more than 400 calories each, and always a near exact PC combo. While the eating plan in this book claims not to be a "diet," but a way of life instead, I find eating fat-free dairy products, egg whites, and plain yogurt pretty much "diet" fare. Also be prepared to exercise 45-60 minutes per day, too, on Christine's plan.I do appreciate the PC combo ideas and recipes in this book though - so far they've been tasty and satiating.Still, after a week of sticking with this plan, I've not lost an ounce of weight.

Review of Runaway Eating: The 8-Point Plan to Conquer Adult Food and Weight Obsessions (Paperback)

If I didn't know better, I would think that the authors of this book had hidden cameras in my pantry (and in my subconscious). In just the first few pages, they perfectly described my over-eating episodes as if they'd been there with me while I devoured an entire bag of chocolate chips. And in the subsequent chapters they revealed the lies I've been telling myself in the back of my mind, helping me get honest with myself about my distorted view of my body, my eating, and how to find happiness.Although the book is clearly aimed at women in their mid-life (one of the 8 points in the plan is specific to menepause), I found most of the book applicable to me as a 30yo man who has fluctuated between over-eating and restricting my whole life.I feel like, for the first time in my life, a veil has been lifted that has revealed all the ridiculous lies I've been telling myself that keep me unhappy.I'm just starting out, trying to regain my ability to know when I'm really hungry (not tired, angry, bored, or depressed), and when I'm full (rather than eating until I'm sick).I already find I'm eating more than I convinced myself I should eat (though surely less than I was eating, since I'm not gorging on cookies anymore).I also have more energy and find myself able to deal with work and home with a smile, rather than succumbing to tension. If you've ever told yourself that your happiness is dependant on losing a few more pounds, or you've ever started eating a cake by taking a small slice, then rationalized another small slice, then another, and another and another, until the cake is nearly gone -- this book will be a kind, gentle wake-up call and help you take rational steps toward a healthy relationship with food.

Product Description
The first book to address a disturbing new trend: dangerous eating patterns in midlife women that can have serious health consequences.
Struggling to cope with the stress of menopause, empty nest syndrome, caring for ailing parents, work overload, and the cultural emphasis on youth and beauty, more and more women find themselves eating compulsively to ease tension, manage anxiety, quell depression, and distract themselves from what's really eating them. Others obsessively follow strict diets or exercise excessively.
In this groundbreaking book, clinical psychologist Cynthia M. Bulik, Ph.D., and dietitian Nadine Taylor team up to present a patient-tested 8-step program to help women regain a healthy relationship with food. Readers also will find:
o A thorough explanation of the full spectrum of Runaway Eating behaviors, from occasional lapses into binge eating to restrictive dieting to compulsive exercising
o Alternative ways to alleviate anxiety and defuse depression
o Practical strategies for managing the menopausal symptoms that often lead to disordered eating

Review of The Green Pharmacy Guide to Healing Foods: Proven Natural Remedies to Treat and Prevent More Than 80 Common Health Concerns (Paperback)

This is one of the best books I have ever purchased and I own hundreds. James A. Duke, PhD has devoted his life to the service of mankind. This is the third book I have purchased by this author and they are all fantastic. The book is interesting, up-to-date, and well-researched. I have had the book for less than two weeks and the information is already helping me immensely. I have recommended this book to friends, colleagues, my students, and have purchased an extra copy for my sister. If you want to lead a healthy life, this is the book for you. Thank you James Duke!

Product Description
Upon its publication more than a decade ago, Dr. James Duke's The Green Pharmacy quickly set the standard for consumer herb references. A favorite of laypeople and professionals alike, the book sold more than a million copies and solidified the author's reputation as one of the world's foremost authorities on medicinal plants. In his new book, Dr. Duke turns to the broader and even more popular subject of food as medicine, drawing on more than thirty years of research to identify the most powerful healing foods on earth. Whether he is revealing how to beat high cholesterol with blueberries, combat hot flashes with black beans, bash blood sugar spikes with almonds, or help relieve agonizing back pain with pineapple, Dr. Duke's food remedies help treat and prevent the whole gamut of health concerns, from minor (such as sunburn and the common cold) to more serious (like arthritis and diabetes). Dr. Duke has assigned a rating to each remedy, according to his evaluation of the available scientific studies and anecdotal reports. Many of the healing foods recommended here are proving so effective that they may outperform popular pharmaceuticals-minus the risk (and cost).

Review of Get Stronger, Feel Younger: The Cardio and Diet-Free Plan to Firm Up and Lose Fat (Hardcover)

Dr. Wayne Westcott is an icon in the fitness business. He's forgotten more than most people writing health books will ever know. A previous reviewer's concerns about a few of Westcott's exercises being potentially dangerous for the spine would suggest that person did not actually read this book, or has some kind of agenda.

The book is marketed toward women---they buy the most fitness books---butbefore even purchasing "Get Stronger, Feel Younger", I e-mailed Westcott to ask if the program works just as well for men. He cared enough to reply and said the program is used by, and designed, for both men and women.

The fitness program makes a well-researched case that the single best thing you can do for long term weight control is strength training. Westcott and Gary Reinl explain in great detail that when you lift weights the right way, you burn calories during and after the session, and then increase your metabolism 24/7 which creates a deficit and fights off fat and aging.

The authors also believe the best way to achieve maximum results while still finding time for the rest of your life is to do one set to muscle failure. Beginners exercise for 20 minutes 2 or 3 times a week, advanced for 30 minutes 2 or 3 times a week. That's really it.

The programs can be done at a fitness facility (recommended), a Bowflex or similar home gym, or with dumbbells and rubber tubing with a flat weight bench. The plans are laid out with great pictures and meticulous instruction. You will have no doubt what you're supposed to do.

There is also a section on sensible nutrition which does not include calorie or gram counting, nor does it go low calorie the way Jim Karas' diets do. The obligatory recipes are also included.

I love this book. I'd give it 4 1/2 stars if I could. I have only a few minor gripes. Besides being silly that the book is marketed solely toward women, I would like to have seen a variety of programs to fight off boredom and keep muscles guessing moving forward. A flexibility routine and more on cardio for cardiovascular health would also be welcome. To be fair, the book completely delivers on its title: "Get Stronger, Feel Younger: The Cardio and Diet-Free Plan to Firm Up and Lose Fat." It doesn't try to be all things to all people.

Product Description

As women age, their metabolisms slow, and over a 20-year period, the average woman packs on about 30 pounds of fat. So, in order to lose weight, women turn to diet plans that not only restrict calorie consumption, but also are very difficult to maintain.

Now, with Get Stronger, Feel Younger, you can shed the fat that you've accumulated over the years, while regaining and maintaining a healthier body composition and a faster metabolism-without depriving yourself of the foods you love.

Acclaimed fitness experts Dr. Wayne Westcott and Gary Reinl present their proven strength training program that has helped over 3,000 research participants shed fat, regain atrophied muscle, and experience dramatic increases in resting metabolic rate. Using cutting-edge exercises and brief high intensity workouts, in as little as 10 weeks you can experience a 15-pound improvement in body composition and physical appearance: up to 12 pounds of fat loss, 3 pounds of new muscle, and a 6 percent increase in resting metabolic rate.

There are two programs: the Standard Strength Training Program, which requires only 20 minutes for completion in 2 days a week, and the Advanced Strength-Training Program, which requires 30 minutes 3 days a week. Dr. Westcott and Reinl also provide a natural nutrition plan that not only may enhance your results, but also is realistic and easy to follow. They explain how using brief high-intensity workouts and strength training can transform your body-as well as help prevent diabetes, heart disease, stroke, osteoperosis, low back pain, arthritis, and several types of cancer.

Review of Men's Health: The Book of Muscle--The World's Most Authoritative Guide to Building Your Body (Hardcover)

I have had this book for about 9 months now.I recently completed the intermediate program and made great gains.I followed the nutritional advice given in the book and gained 20 pounds.20 Pounds may not sound like much, but it is a total body transformation when you go from 169 to 190...and it is all muscle.

The workouts are designed in such a way that you stress your muscles very hard and then have ample recovery time to get bigger and stronger.

I ran a marathon and a week after finishing it I started this book.So I basically started from scratch.

Starting I could bench press 40 pound dumbbells for a max 8 reps. After the six month intermediate workout I lifted 80s for 8 reps.
Shoulder press went from 65lbs barbell press for 5 reps to 120lbs for 5 reps.
Squat was the biggest improvement.Started at 65 for 10 reps.Finished at 185 for 10 reps.
The best exercise there is in my opinion I never knew about before this book.It is the DEADLIFT.The deadlift made me bigger and stronger overall than anyother exercise. And it focuses on a common weakness for most people, the LOWER BACK.
Deadlift start was 65 for 5 reps.Finish at 225 for 5 reps.

The key to this book is that it takes you through a cycling approach.By taking you through stages with varying sets, reps, and exercises, you muscles are always in a state of shock and always responsive to the workouts.

I am doing the intermediate workout again. After I complete it a second time I will advance to the advanced workout. You will never need another book for fitness. This is the best book I have EVER read and APPLIED for an extended period of time. The authors have done a wonderful job with writing.Again, the workouts are great and because of the cycling approach the author takes with the workouts, you can continure to do them and never have to switch to another program.

I got very good results from following this book exactly as the authors prescribed.I am continuing to make gains in strength and size by following this book.Ian King and Lou Schuler have put out what I consider the best book ever on the topic of getting strong and gaining size. The bottom line is that you WILL get injury-free results if you follow this book.

Review of Essential Abs: An Intense 6-Week Program (The Men's Health Peak Conditioning Guides) (Paperback)

When I first got this book I was very dissapointed, it is a very slim book with large type-fonts, lots of pictures and some pages only have a few words on them.
Then I took six weeks to try out the program that this book teaches, it is a rather easy program to follow but it did help to improve my ab strength although it has by no means made me "ripped".
In short, this is a small overpriced book with some good information in it.

Review of Dr. Neal Barnard's Program for Reversing Diabetes: The Scientifically Proven System for Reversing Diabetes Without Drugs (Hardcover)

OK, so the diet is very much like the Dean Ornish program for reversing heart disease. A decade ago, I couldn't follow the diet, but it's funny what diabetes-related eye surgery, plus the wider availability of soy foods, can accomplish.

The basic message is simple: No animal fat or protein, eat all the low glycemic-index carbs you want, and reduce all fats as much as possible. The fat reduction has been the hard part for me, though my fat intake has been greatly reduced.

Results? In one month: Blood glucose average is now what my fasting glucose used to be. I have cut one of my meds in half. My medicated blood pressure is now within a very acceptable range. I have lost more than 10 pounds. I am happier, feel healthier, and I am not hungry all the time!

To make this program work, you need to commit to it. But, I have found this much easier than my Weight Watchers experience five years ago and don't really feel the urge to cheat on this diet.

Product Description
Offering new hope to millions, this new nutritional approach to diabetes will dramatically alter the way we think about treating the disease

Until now, most health professionals have considered diabetes a one-way street. Once you developed it, you were stuck with it-and you could anticipate one complication after another, from worsening eyesight and nerve symptoms to heart and kidney problems.

Enter Dr. Neal Barnard, who through a series of groundbreaking studies, the latest funded by the National Institutes for Health, has shown it doesn't have to be that way. By following the diet outlined in this book, readers can control blood sugar three times more effectively than with the American Diabetes Association's diet and, beyond that, improve their bodies' ability to respond to insulin-in effect reversing the defining symptom of the disease. And there's more. Study participants lost weight, were able to cut back on and sometimes even discontinue medications, and left behind tedious exchange plans in favor of delicious foods in generous portions.

It's a new way to treat diabetes. It's about time.

Review of Essential Arms: An Intense 6-Week Program (Paperback)

I have read a few body-building books and think this one, along with the other books in the same series (chest, legs, abs, etc), are the best to date.
One reason for this is the insistence upon good form. Like a lot of people, I have in the past gotten carried away with adding more weight and not paying attention to
form. This is still a temptation but the message on good form presented in this book is finally starting to stick. I especially was impressed by his argument for paying
attention to the negative part of the exercise.
Another STRONG point of the book is that it provides you with lots of routines. After finishing the books 6 week course,
you are supplied with an additional 4 or 5 good routines for future use. As the author states, it is important to change routines often, so that your muscles do not get too
used to a given exercise (and you dont get bored). However,
I am very lazy about putting together routines and tend to stick to one. Thanks to this book this is no longer a problem, because it does it for me; I now have complete
sets of routines that I can follow and am beginning to see important gains as a result.
The book also does a good job of covering the basics of good nutrition, rest and, for all of you gym rats who would ignore it,
aerobics (ever see those pudgy cro-magnon loking guys in the gym who claim their bloated tummies are muscle)!!!! He doesn't cover supplements though and that is
understandable given the controversy and hype surrounding so many of them.

Review of Dr. David Katz's Flavor-Full Diet: Use Your Tastebuds to Lose Pounds and Inches with this Scientifically Proven Plan (Paperback)

The core concept of The Flavor Full Diet is one that has apparently been researched for quite a while, but few of us know of - that of "sensory specific satiety". This refers to the role of flavor, and specifically, many different flavors (sweet, salty, bitter, etc) combined in one meal causing our hypothalamus to be over-stimulated. The net result is that too many flavors increase our appetite and leave us wanting to eat more food, even if our stomachs are full.

I've always wondered why I feel still feel hungry after eating several different courses, or at family gatherings during the holidays. Now I have the scientific reason behind my cravings and am learning how to curb my appetite by sticking closer to one "flavor category."I can still enjoy sweet foods, for example, I just try not to eat them after a salty meal.

Dr. Katz makes the concept very easy to understand and with his wife Catherine, have supplied some great recipes that are easy to make. Though I don't have kids, the recipes seem quite family friendly - and as the book doesn't limit what you eat, only how you eat it - I think this eating plan will be very attractive to people.

I deeply respect Dr. Katz' work, as he is one of a few leaders in this industry that is not just writing books on how to improve your health, but is advocating through research, policy and program initiatives to improve health across the nation. Thanks Dr. Katz for an excellent book!

Product Description
Lose weight easily with Dr. Katz's groundbreaking approach to appetite control. Dr. David Katz's Flavor-Full Diet shows you how to fill up to complete satisfaction on fewer calories, calm the appetite center, and drop up to 16 pounds in just 6 weeks while eating delicious and nutritious food suitable for the whole family. Review of The Stubborn Fat Fix: Eat Right to Lose Weight and Cure Metabolic Burnout without Hunger or Exercise (Hardcover)

I love this book! The title sold me initially,
but the well-written, detailed path to shed weight
was truly inspirational and is already working!
A must read!

Product Description
Do you feel tired all the time? Do you feel hungry between meals, even if you've just eaten? Do you crave candy, soda, or coffee, especially in the mid-afternoon? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have a metabolic disadvantage. Most diet plans fail because they don't address the underlying metabolic conditions that contribute to increased hunger and weight gain. In fact, they often worsen the problem by cutting calories and prompting food cravings. This further stresses your metabolism and leaves you hungrier-and heavier-than ever. The Stubborn Fat Fix remedies this by identifying and treating metabolic imbalances. Based on the results of simple quizzes, you'll choose between two eating plans that prescribe the ideal foods needed to repair your metabolic disorder and turn off faulty hunger signals. On both plans, you'll lose weight by doing something that seems counterintuitive-eat more, move less-in order to heal your metabolism. You can even incorporate "luxury" foods-indulging in ice cream, salty snacks, bread, wine or beer, or even chocolate-to stay on track without feeling deprived. A tailored supplement program, carefully controlled exercise, and stress-reduction techniques complete the metabolic cure. Even better, once your metabolism is in balance, you will not only permanently drop pounds but also improve your cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar, and energy levels for overall better health. Hundreds of the Berkowitzes' patients, like those profiled in the book, have successfully lost up to 70 pounds with this plan. With The Stubborn Fat Fix-featuring more than 30 delicious recipes and the exclusive Fiber Ratio tool created by Valerie to help you get the most out of your favorite foods-you, too, can lose that stubborn fat forever.

Review of Feed Your Tiger: The Asian Diet Secret for Permanent Weight Loss and Vibrant Health (Hardcover)

This is the only lifestyle book I have found that treats food addictions, including emotional bingeing, as an opportunity for weight loss. Using the Feed Your Tiger baseline diet recommended for everyone, I lost weight because it simplifies eating without counting calories. Following the author's recommendations for teas, spices, and simple dishes I finally lost weight after years of trying. No diet ever lasted longer than a week because they were boring. This one is not.

I love the idea of being a dragon - instead of an overweight person!! Most weight loss books stress "don't" foods or push extreme foods. I have applied the Feed Your Tiger diet to my own Italian meals--a smaller portion of whole grain pasta, more salad, more hot spice, and lots of tea. Lots.

This book has recipes for cooks - not my thing-- and easily available supplements for non-cooks. My favorite new snack food is spicy popped corn. Now I also devour toasted seaweed. I even ordered a reishi mushroom extract. WOW - It gives my day a charge!! I feel great and after eating like a Dragon for a month my friends have asked me: What happened to you? This book deserves at least 10 stars.

Product Description
Forget about restrictive fad diets and "feel-the-burn" workouts. Drawing on Eastern healing principles that date back thousands of years, this is a decidedly different--and superbly effective--approach to weight control through energy balance
Feed Your Tiger is the first book to establish a connection between weight loss and energy type. Author Letha Hadady shows readers how to drop extra pounds through a combination of natural remedies and techniques that draw on both contemporary scientific research and traditional Chinese medicine.
By completing a short questionnaire, readers determine their own energy type: tiger, bear, dragon, or crane. With this information, they learn how to choose healing foods for their energy type; how to tailor their eating plans to their individual cravings; and how to further support their weight-loss efforts with specific natural remedies--including herbal and nutritional supplements, massage techniques, and stretches.
Feed Your Tiger was the subject of a controlled observational study, conducted at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. The findings confirmed that Hadaday's methods are as effective as they are unique.

Review of One Smart Cookie: All Your Favorite Cookies, Squares, Brownies and Biscotti ... With Less Fat! (Paperback)

The good: I have made about 15 recipes from this book so far.All ranged from "good" to "excellent", a very respectable turnout. Not a single one was unpleasantly tough, dry, or otherwise failed. They compare VERY favorably with other lowfat cookies I have tried.I will definitely be making some again, and trying others. My personal favorites were apricot almond streusel squares, `gourmet' variation of the chocolate chip cookies, pecan pie squares, crunchy peanut cookies, and cornmeal maple pecan twists.

In general, the recipes in this book are reliable, tasty and have significantly reduced fat (especially saturated fat) as compared with comparable `regular' cookies.E.g., in a typical ~ 2 cup flour recipe, there is usually ~4 T butter here as opposed to 1-2 sticks, and egg yolks are usually reduced or eliminated. The changes do reduce overall dough volume and yield a smaller batch size, which in my opinion is all to the good.(If you're buying a reduced-fat cookie cookbook, chances are you don't want 5 dozen extra cookies lying around every time you head to the kitchen to try a new recipe).

Other pluses: these recipes use familiar, inexpensive and natural ingredients that you already have on hand or can easily find: no weird or artificial diet substitutes.Unlike most low-fat recipes, these cookies are portioned normally and even generously; there is no artificial lowering of the fat content by instructing you to fashion micro-cookies of which you would have to eat 10 to equal one normal cookie. In fact, in several recipes I ended up with more cookies than the listed yield, which almost never happens to me.

This book also seems like a labor of love-- the recipes are unusually well-tested and fine tuned. The instructions are clear, careful and include useful details, like tips on how to reduce the number of dishes you dirty in the preparation. The book belies its small size with lots of helpful or interesting marginal notes and voluminous recipe variations, many of which yield genuinely different recipes (not just something obvious like substitute one variety of raisin for another). You'll find a wonderful diversity of cookie flavors, textures and styles and familar standbys as well as unique recipes of the author's own creation.

The bad:First, I found a few baking times to be off, in particular, too long (my only general `recipe testing' complaint). The author is good about providing other done-ness cues, but I'd recommend you start checking cookies much earlier than indicated.

Second, although these recipes are very good, there were some clear `consequences' of reducing the fat.Several cookies had telltale textural issues such as being soft and cakey instead of tender-chewy, or being hard-crunchy instead of tender-crunchy.Also, almost all became stale frustratingly quickly, in several cases, within a few hours. Some took well to refreshing, freezing, storing unbaked dough to bake off as needed, etc., but I had to figure this out on my own.Given the pervasiveness of the premature staling problem, I would really have appreciated more attention to storage advice and/or strategies - no one wants to end up throwing out most of one's labors away.

Finally, the philosophy of this book is very much of a mid-nineties `reduce fat and who cares about anything else' style, and that philosophy, as most people would now acknowledge, suffered from some major nutritional flaws.Again, the recipes do succeed, and admirably, on satisfying the criteria they set out to satisfy (they are lower fat, and they taste good-- no mean feat). However, if you flip through the nutritional information handily accompanying each recipe, you may notice that many of these cookies are very high in refined carbohydrates and calories. Many of the bars, especially, hover around the mark of 200 calories EACH (and some even more)-- that's a lot. And of course you're not going to eat just one.Morever, many recipe variations are rather decadent (calling for additions of things like nuts, chocolate chips and caramel), with added fat but no added calorie information.I find all this to be off-putting in a book that promises `healthy alternatives that can be eaten without guilt.'

In fact, a number of these recipes seem to have nearly the same total calories as the `standard' version whose fat has not been assiduously reduced. In such cases, you're not so much saving calories as you are exchanging them--by and large, fats for simple carbohydrates.Arguably, this is a trade for the worse, as it increases the "empty calorie" count of your treat and decreases the satiety that fats provide. Then there are the losses that come along with the fat for simple-carb trade--e.g., lower-fat cookies go stale much faster and without the fat, they can taste too sweet. In many cases the new cookies, while still very good, are obviously missing elements of the old standbys. If you slash the amount of chocolate chips in a chocolate chip cookie or the amount of nuts in a Russian tea cake, you can tell that those elements are missing, however appealing the new versions may be on their own terms. This, in combination with a belief that the new cookies are `healthier' (and are going to be stale tomorrow) can lead us to eat an extra cookie or two and thus end up with more calories than if we'd just stuck with the family recipe from the 50's.

I'll now remove my party-pooper hat and reiterate that the author has succeeded in producing a book of wonderful-tasting, diverse and easy cookies with less fat.The book is absolutely in the top tier of the low-fat dessert cookbook family. If you are selective, you can also find many tasty choices that are not JUST reduced fat, but also sport an impressive nutritional profile for dessert. And the book is generally a pleasure to cook and read from. So, I give it 4 stars because it mostly delivers on what it promises.Just don't expect the recipes be nutritional miracles.
