Review of Depression-Free, Naturally: 7 Weeks to Eliminating Anxiety, Despair, Fatigue, and Anger from Your Life (Paperback)

I found it to be a well researched book with scientific, NON-DRUG solutions for depression, and anxiety that are working for me. I like the fact that the author developed and tested all of these formulas at a clinicin real life situations. If you have been disappointed with theeffectiveness of drugs in solving your health problems, you will bedelighted with the results from this logical approach.

Review of Under the Influence: A Guide to the Myths and Realities of Alcoholism (Mass Market Paperback)

I find the comments that the book is out of date sad, because the vast majority of alcoholism treatment programs as well as public opinion have not yet caught up to this book.
Milam advances several important concepts:
1. Alcoholism is a disease like diabetes. Psychology and morality play no role, except in the alcoholic's reaction emotionally to the consequences of the disease [hiding it, seeking help, etc.] If you think this view of alcoholism is completely accepted now, try telling your boss you are an alcoholic.
2. Milam then explains HOW alcoholism is a disease in fascinating detail. Alcoholics are not addicted to alcohol, but to a complex physical process that happens when they drink. Basically, the alcoholic's body reacts to the presence of alcohol in the body differently from that of a "normal" person, and no amount of counseling/threats/religious conversions can change that.
3. Alcoholics may not know when to save themselves, and may need help [he shoots down the "hitting bottom" myth]. Do you wait for a diabetic to go into a coma before you help them?
4. Treatment for the alcoholic must address the poor state of the alcoholic's health and nutrition. Alcoholic tremors, shaking, illusions, paranoia, etc. are caused by alcoholic malnutrition. Alcohol strips the body of water soluble vitamins, particularly the crucial B vitamins, and prevents the liver and other organs from repairing the body.
The one section of the book I don't agree with concerns the role of government/public agencies in alcoholism treatment. Milam expects too much of them. But that does not affect the brilliance of this book.
In the reviews here, there are some criticisms that Milam describes only "worst case" scenarios. That is not correct. He clearly describes all the stages of alcoholism, from the "I just want to have fun" stage to the lying in the gutter stage, and he recognizes that the disease progresses differently in people.
As an alcoholic who has been sober for twenty years, I can't recommend this book enough. It provides hard information, not moralizing.

Review of Food Addiction: The Body Knows: Revised & Expanded Edition (Paperback)

After trying (and failing) for years to lose weight with Weight Watchers and dieting, I had almost concluded that significant weight loss was for me, not possible. Then I was introduced to the principles of Kay Sheppard's food regimen, and in four months, lost 30 pounds.I am still losing, and for the first time, without having to fight feelings of deprivation and those terrible food cravings. If this is a diet, it is the easiest and most effective diet I have ever been on. My friends and family are amazed.
There are two major aspects of Sheppard's food regimen: (1) the physiological aspects of food addiction that derive from low blood sugar due to a hypoglycemic response to flour and sugar in the diet, which is what causes the food cravings and binging, and (2) the moral, spiritual and pyschological support needed to get through the early withdrawal phase, and for many, to stay in recovery.
Sheppard mentions support organizations like Overaters Anonymous and Food Addicts Anonymous, which provide sponsors, information, and moral support for the morbidly obese and other food addicts. I have personally met several individuals in such organizations who have lost over 100 pounds (one young woman had lost 150 pounds)with the result that their lives had turned around and their health restored. The reviewer below who reports that she failed in this food program should try again, this time with a sponsor and an organization to help her.
If you have a significant weight problem or eating disorder, read Kay Sheppard's book.It will be the first step on your road to recovery.

Product Description
>
  • Are you a food addict?
  • Do you gain more weight than you lose after every diet?
  • Can one cookie destroy all your good intentions?
  • Do you eat when you are disappointed, tense or anxious?

Since its publication, Food Addiction has become a primary resource for food addicts and compulsive eaters. Now it is updated and presented in a revised and expanded edition, with a new chapter on relapse. For a food addict, relapse is an ever present danger which begins in the mind before reaching for that cupcake or other trigger food.
Here food addiction is defined, trigger foods are identified and consequences of food addiction are revealed. A lifetime eating plan demonstrating how to stick with a healthful food plan for the long term is also provided.
"For some people, foods can be as addictive as alcohol," Kay Sheppard explains. "Gummy bears and marshmallow chicks can be vicious killers whose effects can lead to depression, irritability and even suicide. The terrible truth is that for certain individuals, refined carbohydrates can trigger the addictive process. This book is an effort to help you understand and solve the problems of compulsive eating."

Review of Lighten Up! Lose Weight!: A 10 Week Self-Hypnosis Program (Paperback)

Some good thoughts and ideas. But sometimes you have to decode what the author is trying to say because the editing and writing is so poor. The book seems more like a rough draft before corrections were made. It is full of dropped words, typos and sentences that seem to have been randomly cut and pasted together. Here's one example - the well-known scripture from Ecclesiastes is quoted as "a time to read and a time to sew", when the words are actually "a time to reap and a time to sow" - obviously totally different meanings. While such errors add some humor, they also distort or obscure what the author is trying to say, as well as show a lack of attention to quality.

The ideas for self-hypnosis are very basic - and mostly focused on affirmations. Some of the suggestions the author tells you to make to your subconscious mind could produce negative results, such as that sugar is a poison to your body. There are many types of sugars in many kinds of foods, including fresh fruits, vegetables and healthy carbohydrates. You definitely don't want to teach your body to react to sugars as a poison.

As a psychotherapist and healing facilitator, trained in various forms of clinical hypnosis I had hoped this would be a good book to recommend to my clients, but I cannot recommend it to anyone.I gave it two stars because some of the content is useful, and the author is well-intentioned.However readers should be cautious in the use of some of the suggestions/affirmations recommended. In general, any suggestion or affirmation that has negative wording or possible negative consequences should discarded.

    Product Description
A step by step 10 week program of using hypnosis techniques to lose weight without starving yourself to death. Diet equals deprivation. Getting to your repressed emotions equals liberation - from all diets. Self-hypnosis through the power of self-talk and the power of your own mind, helps you to make better choices, by using self-hypnosis suggestions to improve your eating habits so you won't want that juicy hamburger and wonder why you ever stooped so low to eat that hormone-laden grease patty in the first place. You are already hypnotized through your negative self-talk, now you can change negative programming into life-changing "CAN-DO".
Lighten Up! Lose Weight! is a do-it-yourself project that gives you the answers to why you "yo-yo" and how stuffing and holding in anger and guilt contributes to fat.
The problem is not losing weight - you've done that dozens of times. THE PROBLEM IS IN MAINTAINING WEIGHT LOSS, and this program gets you in touch as never before with the reasons you don't, serving up interactive exercises on "checking your motive" on why you eat inappropriately.

Review of Taming the Beast Within (Paperback)

"You are what you eat".I'm sure we're all familiar with that saying.Well, it's what this book is about. MitchWeiss takes us on a journey from our origins to the present, showing that we are the result of natural selection. As such the experiences and behaviors that ensured our survival as a species are coded into our genes and, even more intriguingly, are stored in that vast data base of our subconscious. Not all of the behaviors that ensured our survival were noble. They manifest themselves today in our aggression and in our racism: thus the title 'Taming The Beast Within'.
Perhaps the most speculative premise is the one that suggests that our subconscious may carry recorded memories of the past existence of our ancestors, that 'some of our ancestor's actual conscious memories downloaded into our head by our genetic instructions'.That would explain the feeling of déjà vu that we all experience. Even a talented child prodigy may have inherited the talents of a number of direct ancestors.
A work of such scope and depth as this would be remiss if it ignored religion. And it does not. It challenges our beliefs, our insistence that our God is the true and only one and that our neighbor's is the false one.And of course our neighbor believes the exact same thing.
These are just glimpses into this ambitious work and, in some ways, do it an injustice because you may be tempted to think that this is one of those boring scholarly tomes that you avoid like the plague.Well, it isn't.It's very accessible and very readable. The author's conversational style is engaging and seductive. He can take a thesis of this magnitude, from the atomic structure of matter to the chemistry of the brain, and present it in language that all of us will find interesting and even entertaining.
So what is this book all about. To borrow the author's own words his 'intention is to 'indict' the conventional wisdom and ideologies so that they may stand trial using common sense rules of evidence'.
    Let the trial begin.I can't wait !

    Product Description
Taming The Beast Within, by M.H. Weiss, is the ultimate self-help book. The logical and believable secrets of successful weight control, great mental and physical health, personal confidence and success become crystal clear as this story of life's reality unfolds.
Surely a controversial book, Taming The Beast Within attacks all aspects of the conventional wisdom and prevalent ideologies without mercy. The Author lays out a superb case for the realistic, spontaneous and natural origin of life through a believable journey from the beginning of our universe until the chaotic time in which we live. The open-minded and curious reader will find this book witty, informative, arrogant, sarcastic and charming, all at the same time.
New facts about many aspects of the origins of life, learned from recent genetic and archaeological discoveries, give real explanations to many of life's mysteries. The reader gets a logical and plausible look into the mechanisms at work behind phenomena like the sixth sense, deja vu, premonitions, hunches, intuition plus an intimate understanding of the real causes of mankind's seemingly animalistic behavior. Taming The Beast Within may well be the most important book you have ever read.

Review of Runaway Eating: The 8-Point Plan to Conquer Adult Food and Weight Obsessions (Paperback)

If I didn't know better, I would think that the authors of this book had hidden cameras in my pantry (and in my subconscious). In just the first few pages, they perfectly described my over-eating episodes as if they'd been there with me while I devoured an entire bag of chocolate chips. And in the subsequent chapters they revealed the lies I've been telling myself in the back of my mind, helping me get honest with myself about my distorted view of my body, my eating, and how to find happiness.Although the book is clearly aimed at women in their mid-life (one of the 8 points in the plan is specific to menepause), I found most of the book applicable to me as a 30yo man who has fluctuated between over-eating and restricting my whole life.I feel like, for the first time in my life, a veil has been lifted that has revealed all the ridiculous lies I've been telling myself that keep me unhappy.I'm just starting out, trying to regain my ability to know when I'm really hungry (not tired, angry, bored, or depressed), and when I'm full (rather than eating until I'm sick).I already find I'm eating more than I convinced myself I should eat (though surely less than I was eating, since I'm not gorging on cookies anymore).I also have more energy and find myself able to deal with work and home with a smile, rather than succumbing to tension. If you've ever told yourself that your happiness is dependant on losing a few more pounds, or you've ever started eating a cake by taking a small slice, then rationalized another small slice, then another, and another and another, until the cake is nearly gone -- this book will be a kind, gentle wake-up call and help you take rational steps toward a healthy relationship with food.

    Product Description
The first book to address a disturbing new trend: dangerous eating patterns in midlife women that can have serious health consequences.
Struggling to cope with the stress of menopause, empty nest syndrome, caring for ailing parents, work overload, and the cultural emphasis on youth and beauty, more and more women find themselves eating compulsively to ease tension, manage anxiety, quell depression, and distract themselves from what's really eating them. Others obsessively follow strict diets or exercise excessively.
In this groundbreaking book, clinical psychologist Cynthia M. Bulik, Ph.D., and dietitian Nadine Taylor team up to present a patient-tested 8-step program to help women regain a healthy relationship with food. Readers also will find:
o A thorough explanation of the full spectrum of Runaway Eating behaviors, from occasional lapses into binge eating to restrictive dieting to compulsive exercising
o Alternative ways to alleviate anxiety and defuse depression
o Practical strategies for managing the menopausal symptoms that often lead to disordered eating

    Review of Depression-Free for Life: A Physician's All-Natural, 5-Step Plan (Paperback)

In this book, Gabriel Cousens discusses his five-step program for treating depression -- without Prozac.
The book starts by defining depression and discussing the major types (such as major depression, manic depression, andsome others), talks about how anti-depressant drugs such as prozac &MAO inhibitors work, then launches into Gabriel Cousens' five-stepapproach.
The fivefold approach is basically: <1> amino acidprecursors are used to build up the brain chemistry, then <2> he addsvitamin/mineral supplements, <3> essential fatty acids, <4>dietary advice, and <5> lifestyle factors (touch, support, spiritualconnection, counseling, etc.)By far, the main emphasis on the book isabout the biochemistry of depression, as the last section on the lifestylefactors (<5>) is very brief in relation to the rest of theinformation in the book.
Along the way, there are checkpoints (thateasily stand out, for reference) which you will need to determine whichsupplements will likely be the most effective for your style ofdepression.
Some of the stuff in this book is truly new material.Theinformation on optimizing the diet for your specific metabolism (slow orfast oxidizer) is new, and since blood sugar is a major component inovercomming depression, it is very welcome. This is the most mainstream ofGabriel's books, so he does not spend any time going over the benefits ofraw foods, and though he does suggest a mostly vegetarian diet, he does notstress it very heavily here.Nevertheless, the diet section has lots ofvegan raw-food recipes that are used at the Tree of Life RejuvenationCenter, for those who are interested in that lifestyle.
I understoodafter reading this book why I feel much less depressed during the day whenI have sunflower seed meal for breakfast - it has to do with my fastoxidation metabolism combined with the seratonin boosting properties ofsunflower seeds.(I discovered that I felt better eating sunflower seedsbefore I read the book, so it was a pleasure to read the book to discoverwhy that meal is so effective for me.)

Review of A Thinking Person's Step by Step Guide to Weight Loss & Exercise Program (Paperback)

I really enjoyed reading this book and found it refreshingly helpful. It provided an approach to dieting and exercise that I had not thought about before.I liked that a "system approach" was examined to meet the challenge of changing one's lifestyle as well as an emphasis on team work for succcess.I took the suggestion of tracking my progress and that proved to be informative as well. This is so much better than individual motivation and guilt that are used in most diet and exercise books!

    Product Description
This book presents a groundbreaking approach to keeping up with weight loss and exercise plans. The method described - and shown to work based on empirical results - is radically different from traditional methods that single-mindedly emphasize personal motivation. Instead of promoting the establishment of overly ambitious goals, the selection of diet or workout "buddies," and the pairing of idealized outcomes with guilt trips as an ultimately destructive carrot - stick combination, the book sets out effectively to demolish these common and frequently toxic approaches. In a calmly reasoned, analytical way, the authors identify decisive elements in each person's environment and show how seemingly small changes in our surroundings and habits lead to lasting results.

Among the many innovative angles presented in the book are recordkeeping tools that bring out patterns hidden in our lifestyles and help us distinguish between real improvement and insignificant blips. After walking the reader through the steps of their unique strategy, the authors offer a full case study that brings the facts and figures to life. The book closes with a discussion on the pitfalls of the self-improvement movement when taken to unhealthy extremes and reiterates the sensible approach that defines its entire content.

Review of The F-Factor Diet: Discover the Secret to Permanent Weight Loss (Paperback)

    INITIAL REVIEW
As I read this book I couldn't help thinking how similar it is to the Zone diet.Low refined carbs, high fiber, lean protein, and a small amount of healthy fats. The only thing that's different is that you are aiming for about 35 grams of fiber per day; the Zone doesn't stress fiber as much, although it does clearly say that the more fiber, the better, because it fills you up.

So...I am now on day 2 of the 2-week introduction phase of the diet, and I'm not dying...yet.I don't feel too deprived on this diet because the foods you eat really are quite filling.I also like that after the first 2 weeks, there are no forbidden foods...you just have to eat appropriate portions since what you can eat is limited to a certain # of servings.

I had to buy a case of the GG Crackers online, because I can't find any stores here that sell them (and I'm in Seattle!!!).The crackers are definitely 100% fiber, and they taste like it.I've found that as I get more creative with how I use them, it gets easier. For instance, they're great with peanut butter.I also like them with light cream cheese and lox, or light cream cheese and cucumbers w/ cracked pepper.

So, basically it's a diet.If you're an absolute foodie like myself, you will feel limited, despite the author's claims. The notion that "you don't take away foods, you just add more fiber" is a little misleading, because you have to cut way down on processed carbs. However, processed carbs aren't off limits, you just really can't enjoy that chicken pot pie like you used to.

Overall, it's a sound diet.It describes the way humans are probably meant to eat. It's healthy, there are a million benefits to eating enough fiber, and you definitely feel less weighed down on it.However...the fun factor goes right out the window.I mean, seriously...have you ever seen a Nutritionist who looks like he/she has any FUN when he/she eats?

ADDITION TO ORIGINAL REVIEW, 7 weeks later:
I don't know if it's due to the diet, or due to me finally being enlightened about my relationship with food, but I have definitely been able to integrate the concept of more fiber/less refined carbs into the way I just live. After the first two strict weeks, I have definitely relaxed some of the "rules" (I mean, sometimes you need a slice of pizza) and found that I'm successful at 1) Not feeling guilty when I do indulge, or feeling like I've "failed" and 2) Being able to continue the diet without feeling that since I've gone off course, there's no longer hope.My main mantra is that if I follow the diet (which I now consider to be a lifestyle) 90% of the time, then I will benefit from it 90% of the time (I believe Dr. Sears of the Zone had a similar philosophy). There is no danger of going "out of the Zone", or getting "out of ketosis" i.e. Atkins. There is no physical state that you "must maintain" in order for the diet to work. You just pick up where you left off.

So...some things I've experienced while on this diet, and again--I can't claim that it's 100% due to the diet, or if it's because I am now finally "ready" to accept that living a healthy lifestyle means ADOPTING healthy habits--are below. I do believe this fiber diet has been a great initiation to a better lifestyle:

1.I have lost about 10 pounds in the last 7 weeks. This doesn't seem like a lot, but it has been gradual and I've accepted this as the way I will eat for life, not a crash diet. Also, I have NOT increased my exercise during this time. I'm o.k. with slow progress if it means I'll be able to do this for a lifetime and never have to diet again. I am slowly working more physical activity into my lifestyle.I feel much better, clothes fit better, and I carry myself with the confidence I had when I was in my 20's and weighed much less.

2.I was taking a proton pump inhibitor for my chronic heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux.I was able to stop taking this medication after week one because I no longer have the above symptoms, and really believe that I won't need to take it ever again.I'm relieved for this because of recent evidence that suggests PPIs inhibit calcium absorption and therefore may lead to less bone density (particularly in the hip) and higher risk for bone breakage as I age.

3.My hunger is under control.I have learned how to be satisfied without being "stuffed" when I eat, and I am happier with smaller meals, thus fewer calories. I do not feel the low blood sugar crash when I get hungry between meals (meaning that I am not a crazed maniac if I cannot immediately eat), and I am much more aware of what I'm eating because of it.If I eat a really large lunch, I can easily eat a much smaller dinner and be perfectly satisfied.I no longer have cravings for junk, and believe me:I used to LOVE the junk.

RECIPES AND STUFF THAT'S WORKED FOR ME:

One thing that has been a great addition to this diet are Mama Lupe's low-carb tortillas (60 calories, 3 grams fat, 7 grams carb, 4 grams fiber in each 10-inch tortilla). They are the best tasting low-carb tortillas I've ever had, and I've tried many.I have not found them in stores, but order them online. I'll make quesadillas with fresh homemade salsa, use them for wraps with lunch meats, cheese and plenty of fresh veggies, or use them as I would normal tortillas when I cook Mexican food.

As for the GG crackers, some great success I've had:
1.With peanut butter and apple slices
2.With dijonaisse, lunch meat and low-fat cheese and pickles
3.As pizza crust: line them up on the bottom of a baking sheet, add your favorite tomato topping (or make your own by simmering fresh diced tomatoes, plenty of garlic, oregano and salt to taste), add the italian cheese blend you can find in the bags already shredded, and top with chicken italian sausage that you've taken out of the casings and cooked in a skillet (may need a bit of olive oil since the good chicken sausage is low-fat).Throw the whole thing in a 375-degree oven for 15 minutes or until the cheese is melted and getting to be golden. The crackers soften up a bit, but hold up to the firmness needed to hold the toppings.

4.I've been adding a tablespoon of ground Flax Meal (you can find it at health food stores, or online) to my morning yogurt for an added boost of fiber, plus the great benefits of heart-healthy omega-3's.
Flax has a wonderful, nutty taste and adds great texture.

5.I make a home-made Chinese Chicken Salad with cabbage, shredded carrots, diced chicken or turkey breast, sesame seeds and whatever sesame dressing (I like Girard's Chinese Chicken Salad dressing--it's fairly high fat but I consider it my daily indulgence--the glass triangular bottle). Then, instead of the high-fat fried chow mein noodles, I'll add 1/2 cup of Fiber One cereal for crunch. The salad still tastes great, and packs a nice fiber punch.

6.I have been very dedicated to preparing meals and setting aside "leftovers" or putting something together for lunch the next day at work.Because of this, my lunches are healthy and support my diet, and I save money because I don't eat out every day like I used to.

Best of luck--if this diet resonates with you and you can work with it as a lifestyle change, I have no doubts that you will benefit from all the great things FIBER can do for you!

Review of The End of Diets: Healing Emotional Hunger (Paperback)

Finally I have found the answers I have been searching for. I feel as if I have read every book on dieting and not dieting and most of them will tell you what to eat, what not to eat or that you are eating for all the wrong reasons. OK, great, I know that...so HOW DO I STOP? This book guides you through the process of recognizing the emotions that lead to overeating and guides you through the process of sitting with the emotions instead of eating through them. The author is so right on with the thought process and behaviors of emotional eaters (such as describing how we may come home and we are tired and instead of getting rest, we have a need to reconnect or unwind and tend to start eating at that point...I certainly can relate to that!), yet she takes it to the next level and beyond by giving tools to deal with feelings and emotions that don't involve food for coping. She doesn't suggest eating celery or lettuce or 15 gallons of water. This is not about temporary distractions, but permanent healing. I have a circle of friends that have recently purchased this book and we can't wait to have everyone go through it and start a discussion group!
