Review of Stress Diet and Your Heart: A Lifetime Program for Healing Your Heart Without Drugs or Surgery (Paperback)

Right after a massive heart attack, my cardiologist put me on the Ornish Program.Yes, my total cholesterol dropped, but so did my HDL (good cholesterol). My LDL (bad cholesterol) increased. Most alarmingly, in less than a month, my triglycerides more than doubled! My cardiologist had no explanation for this phenomenon. So, I ate even less fat (down to 5% of total calories). My blood chemistry did not improve.
Fortunately, I changed cardiologists and found that for about 25% of the population the low-fat diet of Ornish's approach actually triggers worse heart disease. This group has an inherited condition that causes small-particle LDL syndrome, a deadly condition that at least triples heart attack risk.(Patients with this condition are said to have Pattern B LDL subclass.)Even the staid American Heart Association last year recognized that for these patients, it is better to change the types of fat a patient eats (switching from saturated fats to monounsaturated fats) rather than drastically reducing fat intake.
Ornish ignores this phenomenon with the comment that some patients don't respond to his treatment. Not responding and getting worse are very different things.I would think that Ornish would at least avail himself of the advanced cholesterol testing that would identify patients who have genetically-caused small-particle LDL syndrome BEFORE treating them with a low-fat diet.
The rabid, no-fat-low-fat mantra may work for some patients, but for those who "don't respond", it is deadly, as proven by several scientific studies. In fact, two recent studies by the University of California at Berkeley showed that even normal men (who did not have heart disease and who did not have small-particle LDL syndrome) began producing large amounts of small LDL particles when put on a low-fat diet.41% of the test group converted to the deadly disease state in six weeks, thus tripling their heart attack risk.
For those with these inherited killer genes, a completely different approach is necessary. But most important, it's necessary to first use advanced cholesterol testing (sometimes called cholesterol subclass testing) to find out if a patient has the genetically-induced form of heart disease that responds badly to a low-fat diet. This testing is different than the oft-given cholesterol panel that shows HDL and LDL.Such panels are highly inaccurate in determining the presence of small-particle LDL syndrome.
Without advanced cholesterol testing, both heart patients and normal individuals who adopt a low-fat diet are playing Russian Roulette. The good news is that for those who have small-particle LDL syndrome, proper treatment can reverse coronary blockage without drugs or surgery.I know.I have this disease and after I got worse with Ornish's diet, my cardiologist and I watched my coronary blockage melt away with an approach that is totally different from what Ornish recommends.

Review of Mosby Medical Encyclopedia, The Signet: Revised Edition (Paperback)

I have the CD version of the Mosby's, and although I still prefer books to CDs most ways, the CD version is still a good product, so I thought I'd make a few comments on it.
First the interface, unlike a lot of reference works on CD that I have, is attractive, simple, and overall well done. I have at least 10 different encyclopedias and reference works on CDs at this point, and the Mosby's is one of the best I've seen. It's easier to use than the Britannica or World Book encyclopedias, for example, and more attractive. It's actually very similar to the Oxford Encyclopedia that I have, which divides the screen up into articles on the right-hand side, with the photos or other media and search boxes on the left. This makes for a nice, uncluttered screen. It probably looks best on a 17-inch monitor (16-inch viewable) or better where you can run at 1024 x 768 resolution.
The CD's main features, accessible by icons on the top left of the interface, include a drug guide, handbook of diseases, a human body atlas, resource lists, multimedia, search, and online, which is websites for further information and reseach.
The resource lists include lists and charts of various things such as height and weight measurements for girls and boys, selected genetic disorders, sexually transmitted diseases, safe sex pointers and risks, summary of carbohydrate classes, mode of action of antibiotics, types and causes of fractures, teratogens, and so on. There are about a hundred of these.
The multimedia section includes about 1400 photos, over 70 video animations, many useful tables, and a prounouncing dictionary of over 4000 terms. The voice has that computer-synthesized quality, but it's okay and this feature has certainly improved over earlier programs I've seen incorporating this feature.
Probably most people will be using the drug and disease entries. These aren't too technical and can usually be understand by the lay person with a little knowledge of basic human physiology and anatomy. I wish the drug entries weren't so short and the disease entries were a little more technical myself, but that's just my preference and one has to consider that this isn't a reference work intended for use by physicians. Overall, this is a quality medical reference for many things and a good value for your money, as the CD isn't very expensive compared to the book.

Review of Carbohydrate Addict's Fat Counter (Paperback)

This book sure makes it clear how it all adds up. I find the layout of each fast-food restaurant very helpful. So much for choosing chicken sandwiches at BK over a Whopper!

Review of Eating For Life: One Simple Diet For Total Health (Paperback)

You want to be healthy and fit.You want to live a long life. But you want to eat like a pig and sit on your la-z-boy too?Guess what? You can't!
This book is easy to read and informative. It had a lot of common sense sandwiched between medical know-how.
The THI scoring system is easy to follow, I think, and not too restrictive. You might not like the fact that eating at Denny's is out but I personally would rather live half a dozen years longer because I gave up the Grand Slam breakfast.
Do yourself a favor and buy this book and read it.Unlike so many other books on the market, Dr. Mogadam doesn't seem to be selling anything but the truth, and the price is very low!

Review of Carbohydrate Addict's Carbohydrate Counter (Paperback)

This book has been a handy reference for us as my son just started using an insulin pump BUT... there is a dangerous error on the cookie page where they list the number of carbohydrates in ONE OREO as 33. The correct number is 8. My son ate three at a picnic recently, and if we had given him insulin to match 99 carbs instead of 24 we would have landed in the emergency room! Fortunately I noticed that listed right below the Oreo entry were entries for Fudge Covered Oreo and Double Stuff Oreo, both of which showed under 10 carbs. Lucky for us it was me doing the looking up, instead of a grandparent or other caregiver who might have simply followed the printed guideline! This misprint is a DANGEROUS error, and makes me question and check everything else I look up.

Review of Barbara Kraus' Calories and Carbohydrates: (16th Edition) (Paperback)

I bought the second edition in 1973, before the labels that are now on all packaged foods and have used it for 30 years. I've had the book longer than I've had my husband (and it's been worth a lot more as well! LOL!). Yes, you can get the information from the packaging on most things, but since oranges and pork chops don't come with labeling, the information is still valuable to those of us who cook from scratch and don't eat everything out of a box. I recommend this as a handy tool to anyone who is interested in counting calories in their quest to maintain their healthy weight.

Review of The Carbohydrate Addict's Lifespan Program: Personalized Plan for Becoming Slim, Fit & Healthyin your 40's 50's 60's and Beyond (Paperback)

I have been using the book and the "diet" for a while now and will report that I feel terrific, which is even more important than my weight loss, which is happening. This book/diet does not promote a highfat/high protein diet like Atkins (which I tried and got sick from), butdoes promote a balanced low-fat, low-carb diet.Almost instantly, I wasfinding my energy levels elevated all day. Before, I would be sleepy latemorning, mid-afternoon and early evening. Now, I can concentrate at work, and have the energy to exercise at night. That's been the most excitingchange. It would be easy for some to dismiss this diet because of thereward meal, but the truth is that once you start the program, your desireto pig out at the reward meal goes away.Yes, I enjoy the fact that I canhave dessert, but I usually don't want that much. Not because I amstuffed; I just don't have the strong desire I used to have!Anyway, giveit a try -- but only if you pass the test and are a Carb Addict.GoodLuck!

Review of The Carbohydrate Addict's 7-Day Plan: Start Fresh On Your Low-Carb Diet! (Paperback)

As a fan of the Hellers' work, and just then experiencing a plateau in my weight loss progression, I was delighted to see this title.I found the ideas in it practical and workable, and they worked! My weight plateau is turning into a downslope again.

Although I like their recipes very much, I have one and a half caveats for these recipes as well as for those in their *No Cravings* cookbook:The recipes' prep times do not include time for the necessary dicing onions, mincing garlic, shredding cabbage, marinating, etc. but rather only the time needed once all that is done.Occasionally there are typos in the recipes also, but easy enough to figure out what the authors meant. I want to emphasize again that their recipes are just wonderfully tasty and filling, and that their system works for me.
