Review of The Fourfold Path to Healing: Working with the Laws of Nutrition, Therapeutics, Movement and Meditation in the Art of Medicine (Paperback)

This is a beautifully written book that manages to be both a crystal clear health practitioner's guide and a fascinating philosophical discussion of the nature of disease and health.

The Fourfold Path to Healing offers a variety of very specific ways to restore balance to the human body, all of which are gentle, non-invasive, and sensible.

Four introductory chapters discuss the "paths" of the title -- nutrition, therapeutics (herbs and whole-food supplements), movement and meditation. Then Dr. Cowan applies these foundational principles to a variety of conditions, from arthritis to cancer to weight loss to heart disease.

He invites us to look at health conditions as more than collections of symptoms. He does so skillfully, drawing on the language of myth as well as botany, dreams, the work of Rudolf Steiner, and other insightful metaphors. Each discussion guides the reader into a broader understanding of the ways in which our health reflects our world view, our mental and emotional balance, and, of course how we care for our physical bodies.

The Fourfold Path to Healing invites deeper participation in our healing -- and in the maintenance and care of our good health, as well.

Product Description
The Fourfold Path to Healing merges the wisdom of traditional societies, the most modern findings of western medicine and the esoteric teaching of the ancients. The fourfold approach includes: Nutrition using nutrient-dense traditional foods; therapeutics through a wide range of nontoxic remedies; Movement to heal and strengthen the emotions; and meditation to develop your powers of objective thought.

Review of Treating Epilepsy Naturally : A Guide to Alternative and Adjunct Therapies (Paperback)

I am not a neurologist but have a strong personal interest in epilepsy. I read this book with great care. There are many chapters of significant merit including chapters 10-20. These chapters include the seizure taming effects of relaxation and certain types of music, doing things to prevent seizure progression when an aura is felt, lots of general information on epilepsy that is organized on a gender or age basis, the challenges of finding employment, and advice on a whole host of life issues that people with epilepsy often face. These are even more thoroughly covered in a number of other references which I have also read that come from the medical community.

So here is the real issue; what is in chapters 1-9? These chapters are loaded with information on diet, food supplements, vitamins, minerals, oriental medicine and other alternative and complementary approaches to treating epilepsy. As I read the Forward by Russell Blaylock MD and chapters 1-9 I had a growing sense that the author's thesis or belief is that traditional American medical treatment of epilepsy on the whole may do more harm than good and should be avoided if possible and that the natural approach is without risk and should be used preferentially. The real problem with this philosophy is that there are many people out there that will believe such nonsense. Any natural approach has risks as well as possible (if unproven) benefits. I certainly do not want to deny that there are problems associated with traditional medical treatment of epilepsy. Side effects are a real issue and can not be ignored.

The book has many unsubstantiated assertions that would make people think that the medical profession as a whole is uninformed. That is most unfortunate. Here is one example from the Forward;

("Doctors in general have difficulty with biochemistry in medical school......If your doctors do not understand these molecular events how can they efficiently treat your disorder? In addition to this lack of knowledge......" p. iv

Chapter 1 is a testimonial by the author on how she dealt with her epilepsy by eliminating junk food from her diet, switching to wholesome foods, adding herbs to the mix (skullcap and goldenseal), exercising and losing weight. She also decreased the amount of Phenobarbital she was taking. At that point she endorses a definition of drugs as being "poison(s)." The reader is also introduced to Robert Fried Ph.D. (a neuropsychologist?) Dr. Fried allegedly has come to the conclusion that "Seizures are metabolical, (sic) not neurological." Dr. Fried also allegedly feels that seizures are more like a regulatory body-process, like vomiting, rather than a disease process. The seizures are, allegedly according to the author, in a way readjusting the individual's metabolism to attempt to achieve homeostasis. My understanding is that there are some seizures that have a metabolic origin but they are in the minority. Certainly eating better and taking care of one's body should make a difference in overall health. Whether that will cure epilepsy is far from proven.

Chapter 4 starts by stating that if you have seizures it is imperative that you see a physician. That is good advice. An implication is made that hypoglycemia may be a major cause of seizures. Such an assertion ("major cause")is a little bit irresponsible in my opinion. It is correctly pointed out that anticonvulsants can have long-term adverse effects on calcium metabolism and bone health. It is then pointed out that phenytoin (an increasingly infrequently used old line anticonvulsant) contains "Drano" and "antifreeze." Puleeeze give us a break. Most readers should know better than to believe that. The real problem with this book as I see it is that there are people out there that will actually believe these assertions that are thrown in for effect, and may avoid the medical profession and thus deny themselves of the benefits that modern medical science has to offer. I in fact know of one mother that read this book four years ago and then took her daughter off of her medication feeling that it was too toxic to tolerate. The daughter's seizures that had been completely controlled for 9 months returned after 3 weeks and have never been under good control since then, in spite of restarting and then trying other medications. A reference should have been included, to the important studies that show that people that achieve complete control on medication for at least 2 or 4 years, have a high likelihood (better than 50/50) of not needing medications after that point, but that those that go off medication early and relapse are often difficult to control. On the whole this book is not balanced and this is one example where the other side of the picture should have been presented.

Chapter 5 on nutrition is interesting and useful. It is smart to eat right.

A lot of chapter 6, "Foods that Harm" makes sense.

Chapter 7 "Foods that Heal" has some interesting ideas. There is information on food supplements as well. I think a more scientific approach to the use of food supplements could have been taken. The issue of the blood brain barrier is not dealt with. There are many unsubstantiated assertions in this chapter. The section on GABA is a good example of both of these problems. GABA does not cross the blood brain barrier and so orally ingested GABA will not end up in the central nervous system. The section ends by stating that "daily supplementation of 500 to 1,000 mg of GABA has been shown to help prevent seizures." This is an irresponsible statement, that if taken and followed, could cost the individual several hundred dollars a year, and all for naught.

Chapter 8 is about the Ketogenic Diet. Although it can help in those with seizures that are particularly difficult to control, I think that most neurologists would not routinely recommend it. The chapter fails to point out the downside of the ketogenic diet and fails to point out that it will not work unless the patient is truly ketotic. Adding fats to a regular diet to try and achieve some of the benefits of the ketogenic diet will only result in weight gain, elevated serum cholesterol and triglycerides, and possibly exacerbation of seizures. Studies have shown that simply losing weight correlates with better seizure control.

Chapter 9 on herbs is interesting but readers should look to other sources before investing a small fortune on those options. A recent book by Orrin Devinsky, MD takes a critical look at herbs (and other alternative and complementary methods of approaching epilepsy) and cites relevant scientific literature (if it exists) that confirms the value of various herbs.

On the whole I do not feel that this is a balanced book. Nor do I feel that the author intended for it to be a balanced book. The sources cited as experts are too dominated by acquaintances of the author and not enough is cited from peer review scientific literature. There are far too many unsubstantiated assertions. Actually following some of the advice in the book could lead to lost opportunities to get epilepsy under control and could lead to much expense in search of the often elusive goal of effectively treating epilepsy without medication. I cannot recommend this book. I can recommend Dr. Devinsky's book "Complementary and Alternative Therapies for Epilepsy."It is a bit pricy so I recommend borrowing it from your local library unless you are a physician or a hopeless book collector that likes to buy medical texts. I give this book 2 stars because it does have some useful information. The other stuff unfortunately brings it down to a "2."

Review of The Miracle Heart : The Ultimate Guide to Preventing and Curing Heart Disease With Diet and Supplements (Mass Market Paperback)

This book summarizes much of the latest research on prevention of cardiovascular related diseases. The author covers almost all (forgot, e.g. "melatonin") of the bases in relating the latestdevelopments in diet related heart disease prevention, and as such I foundit an excellent informative book. The author reports the studies, theresults, the recommendations and the dosages relating to supplementation ofvitamins, minerals, some herbal products, omega 3, etc. etc.The bookcontains new information that I believe has yet to be widely disemminated.. I discern the same weakness in this book as in much of the currentinformation on diet, to wit, how to combine allinto a single plan oftreatment. The author might have reported to us that studies have yet tobe done on how these divergent benefits of supplements can beadvantageously and safely combined, but instead omitted any suchdiscussion. Additionally, and I note this as another suspected weaknessin my mind of the medical work currently being done on diet, it seems thatall of the information is coming out of what I consider to be highlysuspicious "population" studies, as opposed to research onindividuals( ormonkees) on the chemical effects on a single individual ofsupplementation. If I am going to take 1000 grams of vitamin C per day, Iwould like to know the immediate and long term chemical effect, as opposedto knowing that 6000 people lowered their risk of heart attack by 19% by sotaking. And, then, immediately after reading the book, what do we get butone study concludingthat excess C contributes to, rather than prevents, the problem. But as an educational tool this is a very fine effort!

Review of Child Health Guide: Holistic Pediatrics for Parents (Paperback)

If you're someone who finds yourself inexorably drawn to living the healthy life and want the best for your child's health, you should consider buying this book. It's the most concise, accurate treatise I've seen on the subject of children's health. In fact, I intend to buy 10 copies and give them out to friends and relatives as they have kids!

Dr. Neustaedter not only covers traditional subjects like coughs, colds, ear infections, and supplements, but he also broadens the net to include assessments of water filters, safe crib mattresses to reduce SIDS, breastfeeding how-tos, Vitamin K shots at birth, etc. This is but a sampling of what's included!I would highly recommend this book to anyone considering getting pregnant (since the subject matter covers conception to pre-teen health).

What's taken 80% of my leisure time in the last 4 years to investigate on my own, he's drawn together in one handy book for you.Wish he'd published this 4 years ago :-)

BTW, who am I?I am a woman who is into all things healthy and am the lodestone for all I know IRL who want to find out what being healthy means. They've always suggested I should publish a book, but now, I don't have to - Dr. Randy's done it :-)

Lastly, the other book you should have is Smart Medicine for a Healthier Child - which includes every possible illness under the sun, and 4 or 5 alternative, home remedy, and allopathic treatments for each.

Product Description
The number of children taking prescription drugs for every type of ailment has reached epidemic proportions. Child Health Guide offers sensible alternatives to this disturbing trend, providing the information parents need to make informed decisions about natural healing for their children and the integration of natural treatments into their children's medical care. The book covers the prenatal period through infancy, toddlerhood, and into middle childhood, with emphasis on extended breastfeeding, co-sleeping, a natural foods diet, avoidance of toxic chemicals, limited use of vaccines, and treatment of health problems with homeopathic medicines and herbs. Child Health Guide respects parents' choices while providing persuasive arguments for building a healthy immune system by avoiding conventional drugs and stressing natural methods. Using an educational and informative tone, the book discusses preventive medicine, the causes of poor health in children, and common foods and chemical exposures that can contribute to chronic illness. It also provides nutritional interventions that strengthen immunity and promote healing.

Review of What to Eat (Paperback)

Every now and then a book or two comes along that makes me want to get on the phone to friends or email friends to tell them they must read the book. This happened this past week when What to Eat by Marion Nestle and Gone Tomorrow the Hidden Life of Garbage by Heather Rogers arrived at my cottage.

Starting with this book 'What to Eat' the author does an excellent job of explaining the psychology of food from its invention (since so much is man made or processed), to the thousand mile journey it makes, even if organic, to most grocery stores, and the vast amount of waste that is involved in getting even organic fruits and vegetables to your local grocer. And that local grown fruits and vegetables are often turned down for local sale in grocery stores, but packed and shipped across country, all as part of a man made game plan.As is the label game and how many label issues are voluntary and not mandated like for genetically modified foods.

Her section on dairy is good.Personally I buy organic milk from here in northern California and no matter where we have lived I have sought out locals who would allow me to make a 'donation' for their raw milk, since I prefer to make my own yogurt, butter, cheese etc.The taste of regular homogenized milk from the store tastes horrid to me. Probably because its altered so much to allow for weeks on the grocery shelf. How I wish people would demand that their grocer carry dairy products from humane farms that are also whole and healthy.

Her section on meat is equally interesting. As she notes well, those who cull (kill, slaughter) the meat Americans eat work for low wages in very dangerous conditions, with the buyer all to willing to ignore just what happens to get that piece of meat on ones dinner table or fast food meal.Page 139 'Raising cattle also consumes vast amounts of nonrenewable energy. According to figures in the June 2004 National Geographic, it takes more than 200 gallons of fuel oil to raise a 1,200 pound steer on a feedlot. ... You pay the costs of loss of environmental quality in taxes, not at the grocery store.' What is interesting to me is I come from a family where we hunted in the fall and wasted little of any animal we got.We did eat some beef, chicken etc but this was home grown either by us or friends. But when I did my own homework and found out what the local slaughter house near a town we lived in, I knew how unhealthy commercially raised meat can be.And having a son who has worked in the grocery business I admit I wasn't surprised when he told me that the clean cold cases that you buy your meat from are called meat coffins in the business.

Her section on eggs is good and basic but I also urge people to read up on humane egg production because the fact is, most eggs are from hens crammed into cages, beaks clipped to prevent hurting other chickens, and eggs not laid in straw nests but on a slopped cage floor that allows them to coast down an egg gutter where workers come by every few hours and collect them.No matter where we have lived, even in suburbia Dublin CA in the 70's, and now in the Sierras we have had a few free range laying hens, for eggs, not meat.I think its inhumane to buy eggs from caged animals.

I also agree with her frozen food section, that if you cannot buy fresh fruits and vegetables, then buy frozen. But as she notes, you still need to read labels and buy only those items that have a single ingredient i.e. frozen beans, whole strawberries. Rather than whole strawberries in sugar.

I smiled when I read on page 356 'The huge SG Superstore in San Gabriel, California, caters to a largely Chinese speaking immigrant community. The store prints all its signs in Chinese characters as well as English, and the one over aisle 14B says: SPEAR ASPARAGUS, MUSHROOMS, COOKIES, CANNED FISH, and --get this-- JUNK FOOD.'Honest advertising to say the least.

And as the author notes, if we shoppers would set aside a few hours to just walk up and down the aisles and honestly read labels and see how many 'foods' are processed and loaded with cheap sugars and other flavorings and little real food, and then stop and ask ourselves how much of our hard earned money are we throwing away on 'food' that isn't healthy we might be shocked.

As Dr Mehmet Oz notes in his books, shoppers need to stop and read labels as if they were reading a medical prescription. If it has sugar or ingredients you cannot pronounce steer clear of the item.Consider Pepsi, Coke and other manmade beverages. Most six packs around here are around $2.50.What do you get for that $2.50?Water, sugar, caffeine and flavoring.Yet it costs less than .25 cents to make that six pack that has NO nutritional value! None. Same if its sugar free.

And as the author notes, we as a nation are paying dearly for the obscene profits the food manufactures are making. In poor dental and physical health. Diabetes and obesity levels are higher than they have ever been. Now I am not one to simply blame the food manufactures since I think as adults we have the obligation to grow up and act like adults and NOT allow unhealthy things into our lives.I actually am proud to be a food snob! But how do we get others to be food snobs to?

The book is helpful in how it also points out that eating whole healthy food need not be expensive, if we learn to eat fruits and vegetables in season, and if we substitute beans and grains for meat.

On page 489 she gives an excellent example of commercial sliced bread, and their ingredients, fiber and health claims with her comments. As an example there are 22 ingredients in Wonder bread, including enriched white flour, malted barley flour, and various minerals and vitamins ALL added, and not naturally occurring.Compared to home made bread that is easy to make and has less than six ingredients like whole wheat flour, salt, honey, yeast water, milk.

The section on infant formula should be read by any parent who isn't breastfeeding.Page 459 'Beyond the difference in cost, does it matter which level of convience you choose in an infant formula? It might. Powdered formulas are not sterile. ...In 2002, the FDA warned pediatricians that powdered milk formulas could be contaminated with Enterobacter sakaskii, a type of bacteria that causes rare but terrible and sometimes fatal infections in infants, especially those who are premature.'Considering the high number of preemies being born here in the states I wonder how many parents were told of this serious situation. She also has a good section on baby foods.I remember making my own, because commercial baby foods until the 1980's were heavily laced with sugars, and fillers. And as she notes commercial baby food is mainly for convience. But I think buying a $5 baby food grinder and simply taking some of your own steamed vegetables or fruits and grinding them at the table is much easier in the long run and you know the food is fresh.

Also appreciated her health food and supplement section and because I think those of use who strive to eat healthy need to be reminded to read ALL labels no matter where we buy our foods. As an example.I would buy the 100 calories Power Bars thinking they were 'healthy,' until I started taking my own advise and reading the labels. Now I reach for piece of fruit instead.

There is so much helpful information in this book and its a book I think anyone interested in healthy food should own or at least read. You may even want to donate your copy to your local library so hundreds of other people can also become informed.

Review of Conscious Eating (Paperback)

This book is one of the best health books I've ever read, no question about it.It combines pretty much every diet fad you've ever heard about into a raw, living food diet.
In this book, Cousens teaches us how to follow the Ayurvedic principles through a 80-90% raw food diet.He also teaches us how to individualize our diets for our metabolic body types. This is one of the only books I know that teaches how to individualize diet for a vegetarian.
The book covers religion, meditation, toxins in our environment, and has a nice living foods recipe section in the back of the book. The nice thing about it, is that with the recipes, he doesn't try to offer dishes that are similiar to those which are cooked.I see a lot of vegetarian recipe books doing that."Try our delicious all vegan pizza!" and of course, it tastes no better than a branch off of the Maple tree in my back yard. These recipes offer new tastes.
I like a particular section in the book where Cousens tries to explain the logic behind why people think he looks much more unhealthy now than when he did when he was a bulky college football player. We live in such an obesce society, that someone of a healthy weight appears too slim, or unhealthy.Because Cousens doesn't have a pot belly, and sagging male breasts, many people say he looks "thin and puny".This book teaches us thatthrough living foods, we can sculpt and shape our bodies pretty much any way we'd like.He chooses not to be muscular anymore, because he feels he has no need for 30 extra pounds of muscle. Steven Arlin on the other hand, is 230 lbs, and likes to feel big and strong.
All in all, this book takes you on a journey through the fascinating world of raw, living foods. It could change your way of thinking.

Review of The Sugar Fix: The High-Fructose Fallout That Is Making You Fat and Sick (Paperback)

This book is a well written and quite readable fount of useful information about sugar and especially about the relatively new sweetener called high fructose corn syrup. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) was developed a little more than 35 tears ago. It has one big advantage, it's the most inexpensive sugar available. But it has the disadvantage of being very unhealthy when consumed in large quantities, in which it currently is consumed because of its low cost. High fructose corn syrup can cause obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes among other ailments and all of these ailments have increased dramatically since HFCS has come to be the most popular sweetener currently in use. HFCS is used in a large number of foods not normally thought of as containing sugar -- including bread, ketchup, and baby food -- but a major source of this unhealthy sweetener in modern American diets is soft drinks and sweetened fruit drinks, which are frequently dispensed these days in super-size quantities.

Yes, fruits -- which are good for us -- contain the sugar fructose but in very small amounts, because fructose is very sweet. And humans have safely been eating fruits for a hundred thousand years or more. But high fructose corn syrup in food and soft drinks has increased the amount of fructose which Americans now consume by a much as ten times the amount our ancestors got from fruit and this unnatural increase, as this book points out, has resulted in dangerous increases in obesity, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Please read this book and learn about the risks of this dangerous food product and how to minimize them.

XIFAXAN has helped give myself and some of my family members who also suffer from IBS, hope that there is an answer to our suffering. This might be the best Christmas present of all! :^)

After reading Dr. Pimentel's book I actually researched to see what else was out on this subject and found this July article from the St. Louis Post Dispatch:

Controversial Theory Links Bacterial Overgrowth to Irritable Bowel Syndrome
By Kay Quinn
Healthbeat Reporter

It causes everything from pneumonia and infections, to certain stomach ulcers. Now, bacteria could be to blame for triggering a common intestinal ailment.

This new theory has led to a new treatment for irritable bowel syndrome or IBS.
For years, doctors chalked up the alternating symptoms of constipation and diarrhea to stress. But a developing theory links bacteria that causes food poisoning, including salmonella, to IBS.

37 year old Jennifer Freese has been battling the pain and discomfort of IBS since she was 19. "Things you want to do you don't always do because you don't know when it will flare up."

On the advice of her doctor, Jennifer's breath is being tested every 15 minutes for the next two hours. The test can help determine whether she has an overgrowth of bacteria in her small intestine. Some doctors believe certain bacteria that cause food poisoning, like shigella and salmonella, also damage the nerves of the small intestine, setting the stage for that overgrowth and the discomfort of IBS.

"Many patients don't remember the inciting incident. Some patients say o.k. I came back with an infection it lasted for a couple of weeks and I developed IBS and never had it before," says Dr. Leonard Weinstock, a gastroenterologist with Specialists in Gastroenterology in Creve Coeur.

After a careful medical history and physical exam, patients are given a sugar drink that's not absorbed by the body. The breath of those with an overgrowth of bacteria will give off measurable levels of methane and hydrogen. Patients who test positive can then be treated with two drugs: one that increases contractions in the small intestine, and a ten day course of a new antibiotic called XIFAXAN.

"We've had some dramatic responses and we've also had some people who've said thank goodness you can tell me something other than its not in my head," says Dr. Weinstock.

Kelly Kendrick was found to have an overgrowth of bacteria in her intestine. She's been treated and is already seeing a difference. "Now I can eat the foods I love, go out to dinner, not have to worry about the problems I had before. It's been a miracle for me."

Dr. Weinstock believes the test could help up to 70 percent of people with IBS.

Product Description
A New IBS Solution offers a revolutionary look at the way Irritable Bowel Syndrome is currently being treated. Today, over 60 million people of all ages across the country are suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrom(IBS), which is characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits. But because patients may find it difficult to discuss their bowel problems with their physicians, they often suffer in silence or even worse, "learn to live it". According to Dr. Mark Pimentel, Director of the Gastrointestinal Motility Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the majority of IBS cases can be treated successfully. Dr. Pimentel believes that the "missing link" or root cause of most IBS symtoms can be attributed to an overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine. A New IBS Solution takes you through the historical evolution of conventional medicine's view on IBS in a way that can be easily understood. In addition, Dr. Pimentel presents a simple treatment protocol that will not only help you resolve your IBS symptoms, but will also prevent their recurrence.

Review of Restoring Your Digestive Health: How the Guts and Glory Program Can Transfom Your Life (Paperback)

I've had wonderful success by just eating or avoiding the foods Drs. Brasco and Rubin recommend. I take only one supplement now (after learning about it in this book), and it's not a brand they listed. They offer alternatives for people who have difficulty finding things and for the "Budgetarily Challenged".Their suggestions helped me tailor a plan that works for me.

Their explanations of diseases, and conventional and alternative treatments enabled me to make better choices, ask my doctors for the right tests, and be an active partner in my treatment.I had followed the advice of some other authors-and I got worse. In this book Dr. Rubin shares how he triumphed over his own digestive disease, and Dr. Brasco shares his clinical successes with his patients. They know what they're talking about.

There's a wealth of valuable information in the resources and books they recommend. This book is helping me regain my health and I feel very fortunate to have found it.

Review of Dr. Earl Mindell's Natural Remedies for 150 Ailments (Paperback)

IN A NUTSHELL:

This book, "Dr. Earl Mindell's Natural Remedies for 150 Ailments," is a simple and useful guide to treating everything from "bad breath" to "cirrhosis" in a format that lends itself to everyday use. Organized like a cookbook in alphabetical order by ailment, 150 ailments are listed on the left-hand page and their corresponding treatments are listed on the right-hand page. You can't miss for ease of use.

FOR EXAMPLE: TAKE "HEARTBURN" as a typical ailment:

Listed alphabetically, the description of "Heartburn" takes up page 150 [left-hand page], while the remedies are on page 151, [the right-hand page]. For each ailment, such as Heartburn, the remedies are organized into four sections on one page:

at the top -"SUPPLEMENTS" - Vitamin B12, Acidophilus, Digestive enzymes and Betaine hydrochloride. [quantities and directions for use are included on page]

Second are - "Herbs", with four herbs and treatment regimens for each.

Third are - "Consider/Try to", which includes some other treatment options.

Fourth are - "Avoid/ Watch Out For", which includes anything from activities to foods to over-the-counter medications that may cause adverse reactions.

BOTTOM LINE:

This book makes it simple to find the symptoms and alternative treatment options for 150 common ailments. On the minus side, there are NO explainations as to why treatments are suggested, or details about the specific parts of the herb that are to be used or why. For instance, for "heartburn" under the fourth heading, which is always "Avoid/ Watch Out For", antacids were listed to be avoided. While I understand why they might recommend the avoidance of antacids, many people reading the book might think that it was a misprint. Just like avoiding caffeine and coffee if you suffer from "chronic fatigue syndrome". They are NOT misprints, but you'll have to find the answers to why in a more comprehensive study, if you are so inclined.

A GREAT BOOK FOR MY MOTHER:

My mother would look at this book and say, "Great - I can see what I have wrong with me, and what I might do about it." She'll love this book because she does not want to go to medical school and attend lectures or stay up late every night reading about alternative health strategies. For her, and for the many people who choose to leave their health care decisions to an allopathic physician rather than to educate themselves extensively, this book is about as detailed as they may feel comfortable with. Essentially, she would rather leave the medical stuff to her doctor. In any event, this book is a great place to start one's investigation into alternative remedies, and it is a good book to have on anybody's shelf.

Review of The Body Restoration Plan (Paperback)

Dr. Paula Baillie-Hamilton is a British medical doctor who also has a doctorate in human metabolism from the University of Oxford. As a Visiting Fellow in Occupational and Environmental Health at Stirling University and an adviser to the Soil Association in England, she is an acknowledged expert on the information covered by this book.
Dr Baillie-Hamilton's research has revealed that our bodies' natural weight-regulation system can be severely damaged by toxic chemicals we encounter in our everyday lives in our food, water, air, cosmetics, household products and the packaging of consumer items. These toxins interfere with our metabolic and appetite-regulating systems and make us fat by causing us to store more fat than we would if our bodies weren't invaded by toxins.
Since fat is the major place where toxins are stored in our bodies, the doctor offers an eating plan that will take off weight slowly through mild calorie reduction to avoid flooding the bloodstream with poisons that were stored in fat, which can sometimes lead to "detoxifying" symptoms such as nausea, diarrhea and headaches. In addition, the doctor's eating plan consists of three main factors: (1) Try to eat only organic foods, but if you can't, use the food lists the doctor provides which rate foods by how compromised by pesticides they are and/or prepare your food in a way that removes as many toxic chemicals as possible; (2) drink filtered water; (3) avoid using toxic chemicals in your home (e.g., pesticides, chemical cleaning products, strong perfumes and dyes, smoking), and air out your house to avoid toxic air buildup.
One of my favorite parts of the book is an extremely well-done section on common environmental toxins and how they get into our food supply, including: (1) the class of chemicals called organophosphates were initially developed for biochemical warfare and are now used as one of the most common pesticides on fruit and vegetables as well as routinely fed to livestock to fatten them up; (2) carbamates are used as fungicides and pesticides on fruits and vegetables and are also used to fatten up livestock; (3) anti-thyroid drugs are banned in England (she makes no mention of banning in the US) for direct use in livestock to suppress the function of the thyroid so they will get fatter, but similar compounds are still commonly used in the UK and US as pesticides on fruits and vegetables--which people and livestock eat; (4) steroids fatten up livestock by causing water retention and creating a ravenous appetite for carbohydrates--recently banned in Europe, they are still widely used in the US; (5) antibiotics aren't merely given to livestock to wipe out disease, they are also purposely routinely given in minute dosages in order to destroy weight-control hormones and greatly lower metabolism, both of which cause livestock to store excessive fat; (6) organochlorines are extremely toxic pesticides whose most deadly forms (DDT, lindane, PCBs) have been banned in Europe and the US, but they are still almost universally present in animals and humans in North America and Europe for two main reasons: they have not been banned in many countries from which produce is imported into the US and Europe, and animal and human bodies find it almost impossible to throw them off, causing them to persist in fat tissue for decades.
This book is clearly written, flows logically from topic to topic, and provides a detailed table of contents, an index, an appendix of toxic chemicals, a glossary, a comprehensive list of references, and a list of referral websites, including the author's. I especially applaud this book's "hook," that being environmentally poisoned can make you fat. Hopefully this approach will catch the attention of a large number of the millions of dieters in this country who currently are only wanting to lose weight for vanity's sake, rather than for health reasons. Fortunately for them, if they follow this book's recommendations, they can kill two birds with one stone, satisfy their mirror and stave off future health problems, too.
For those people who aren't just overweight but have health problems as well, particularly an inflammation-based disorder (a tip-off you have this is that your doctor is prescribing anti-inflammatory medication), I highly recommend reading in addition to this book the following: The Inflammation Cure : How to Combat the Hidden Factor Behind Heart Disease, Arthritis, Asthma, Diabetes, & Other Diseases, by William Joel Meggs, et al., and The Inflammation Syndrome, by Jack Challem. They cover a vital issue regarding environmental toxins which Dr. Baillie-Hamilton does not: toxins in food, water, air, etc. not only make you fat, they also create an inflammatory process in the body which can lead to many serious diseases. In addition, obesity itself can become an inflammatory condition--very likely because bodily fat, as Dr. Baillie-Hamilton points out, it is a storehouse for toxic chemicals.
Finally, there is one toxic chemical found in our air, water and food (it is yet another fattening agent given to livestock) which neither Baillie-Hamilton, Meggs nor Challem directly discuss: the estrogen-like compounds called xenoestrogens. These toxins also store in body fat and wreak havoc on both female and male endocrine systems--they are linked in females to onset of puberty as early as age nine and breast cancer later in life, shrinking sexual organs and loss of potency in males, and sterility in both sexes. Fortunately, the recommendations of this book will also defend you from xenoestrogens, but if you want further information, and even more protection, I highly recommend any of the several books by Dr. John Lee who has written extensively about using natural progesterone to counteract the damage of xenoestrogens to the body. His books are directed at women, but mention is made in them that men can use natural progesterone, too, to combat xenoestrogens. Dr. Lee's work will also make clear why some women find that when they lose weight they experience distressingly heavy menstrual flow--this can sometimes result due to a too-rapid release into the bloodstream of xenoestrogens previously stored in fat.

Product Description
Toxic chemicals damage the metabolic and appetite-regulating mechanisms of the body's natural Slimming System, a vast network of important body functions that maintain and control proper weight. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Paula Baillie-Hamilton shows how to identify, avoid, and manage the negative effects of what she calls Chemical Calories with:

* detailed food guides enumerating the levels of Chemical Calories in common foods;
* helpful tips on how to rid the home of dangerous toxins;
* detoxifying menu plans and recipes; and
* natural supplement programs to restore and energize the body's Slimming System.

Review of Feeling Fat, Fuzzy or Frazzled?: A 3-Step Program to: Beat Hormone Havoc, Restore Thyroid, Adrenal, and Reproductive Balance, and Feel Better Fast! (Hardcover)

It's not always easy for thyroid patients -- and our practitioners -- to understand how interrelated our hormones can be, along with their critical impact on health. Specifically, when we have a thyroid condition, the relationship to adrenal problems and our reproductive system and hormones, is critical, but it's so rarely addressed.

This makes Drs. Richard and Karilee Shames' new book, "Feeling Fat, Fuzzy or Frazzled?" particularly useful.

Using their unique "Endo-Type" categorization system, you use questionnaires and self-tests to determine which glands -- your thyroid, adrenals or reproductive glands -- are causing your primary imbalance.

And then, the book helps you restore balance, help rebalance the glands, and ensure that all three types of hormones -- the 3 legs of the "stool" metaphor that the Shames use in the book -- are all equal, and therefore able to support you without tipping over.

The Shames recommend readers find a great practitioner and partner with him or her for your health care. And they dedicate an entire section of book to direct communications with practitioners -- letters you can copy and share with your practitioners or endocrinologists, and will hopefully help you get the care you need.

Ideally, you'll find a great practitioner who can help you implement the program with the guidance of the Shames book.

But if you need to follow a self-guided program, you will find the resources and information -- including options on where to order your own tests, and what supplements and nutrients you may need -- to pursue a self-care program.

And another helpful option is that you can contact Dr. Richard Shames for a phone coaching session to help customize the program to meet your specific needs.

Short-term and longer-term approaches are offered, which is especially useful when you are talking about hormones. You'll have things you can do right away, along with longer-term goals and objectives that will help you maintain improvements in your health.

Concept Summaries and Action Summaries at the end of each chapter help you focus your efforts on those practical actions that can have the greatest impact on your health.

Overall, Drs. Richard and Karilee Shames have achieved the near impossible - a clear, comprehensive, practical and integrated roadmap to restore and rebalance our hormones. I highly recommend the book!

Product Description
An expert physician/ nurse team offers a practical, hands-on program to restore thyroid, adrenal, and reproductive balance-and feel better fast.

You're exhausted, and you've gained weight; you feel mentally fuzzy much of the time, and don't feel that you handle day-to-day stress as well as you once did. Worried, you visit the doctor, who orders the typical battery of tests. Two weeks later, you're assured that everything's fine.

Sound familiar? If you're one of the 33 million Americans suffering from hormone-related metabolic problems, the answer is a resounding yes. Feeling Fat, Fuzzy, or Frazzled? is the first book to expose and address the delicate, life-altering balance among the thyroid, adrenal, and reproductive hormones. This multi-gland approach-missing from other hormone-related books-can make the day-to-day difference between feeling awful and feeling good. If left untreated long-term, this imbalance can cause heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, infertility, and severe menopause.

Practical and hands-on, this book offers readers: an innovative, integrated self-care program to identify their thyroid, adrenal, or reproductive-related metabolic disorder (through easy, inexpensive, noninvasive diagnostic tests and questionnaires); a "5-day jumpstart program" to help alleviate symptoms of weight gain, low energy, or frayed nerves fast (through vitamins, minerals, and nutrition); and a long-term plan to achieve optimal health, complete with advice for finding and partnering with the right doctor.

Review of Strong Women Eat Well (Paperback)

Dr. Nelson notes that the Journal of the American Medical Association has reported that 300,000 premature deaths occur each year due to poor nutrition and physical inactivity. The book's key message is to eat mostly "real, whole foods" rather than processed ones, drink enough water, and get out and walk!
Many books on nutrition skip any discussion of water.I was pleased to see that this book did a nice job of explaining why water is so important.
Each section hit on an important point that you need to know.Whole grains solve the glycemic loading problem that causes you to stress your blood sugar levels and can lead to weight gain. You should eat lots of fruits and vegetables.Avoid salt and sugar. You can get too much calcium.Soy is a valuable source of protein. Some fats help you, and some are killers.
The book also has a fine section on how to read food labels, another on eating out, and some tasty-sounding healthy recipes. My favorite section was on what to keep in the house.
The book's simple focus on eating the right foods, avoiding the wrong foods, drinking enough water, and walking does have a downside. Each section seemed to miss at least one other point that you need to know.
Here are a few examples. With water, if you weigh more, you need more water. This book is one size fits all. Also, if you drink caffeinated beverages and alcohol, you will lose more water due to the diuretic effects of these drinks, and need to consume more water than is suggested here.
With calcium levels, research has shown that getting enough calcium doesn't seem to eliminate bone breakage. In fact, studies have shown that women in countries where they get less calcium have fewer bone breaks. It isn't clear why that's the case, so don't cut your calcium intake yet.
The book also recommends the USDA Food Pyramid and the fifth set of guidelines that came out in 2000, which doesn't reflect the latest research from all the long-term studies of how nutrition affects health as I have read about that food pyramid in other recent books on the subject.
Like most such books, there is little customization for age, sex, and blood type.
If you are looking for a book on this subject, you should also consider Healthy Women, Healthy Lives and Eat, Drink and Be Healthy which will give you more detail on these points, more information about what foods to favor and disfavor, and how each food is related to various diseases. You might also enjoy Your Body's Many Cries for Water....
After you have worked on a healther physical lifestyle, how can you improve your emotional lifestyle? In Love and Survival, Dr. Dean Ornish points out that having loving relationships helps health more than anything else.Be sure to read Relationship Rescue if you would like to work on your relationships.
Live well in all dimensions of your life!

The newly diagnosed diabetic often feels as if he or she had been plunked down in front of a circus tent, complete with three rings, sideshows, barkers, and scary clowns, only then to be told "okay, pal, startmaking choices!"
Many patients flee. Others roam around frightenedand vulnerable.
Dr. Rubin, however, clearly, calmly, and intelligentlyguides the patient in this book through the chaos and confusion of thediabetes care circus. He really makes sense out of what is available. Thebook is unfailingly clear.
I was also impressed with his anecdotes, drawn from his practice, about the emotional experiences of his patients, and with his tips on how to cope with setbacks, glitches, and successes.

Review of Special Diets for Special Kids (Hardcover-spiral)

I disagree tremendously with the negative review listed for this book. The author never implies the diet will work for everyone and is the sole therapeutic answer. In my opinion, if you are even THINKING of implementing a gluten-free, casein-free diet for your child, this book is a must. Notonly does the author provide a thorough review of the literature &studies done on relevant treatments for autism, & defines many of theterms so readily used, she offers a ton of GREAT, KID-FRIENDLY recipes(great for ANY kids that need to be dairy- and gluten-free, regardless ofthe reason). The author presents the information without bias, allowingthe reader to form their own conclusions whether the diet would be helpful. And while, yes, the diet may be difficult to implement (since casein andgluten are so pervasive in our foods), it offers a SAFE, alternativeapproach that we have seen work for MANY, MANY people in conjuction withother therapies. And as a medical professional, I was more skeptical thanmost that there could be any link with food & behavior before I heardand saw it for myself over and over and over first hand.If I had a childwith autism I would CERTAINLY TRY this.I would have nothing to lose andeverything to gain.

Review of Suzanne Somers' Eat, Cheat, and Melt the Fat Away (Paperback)

After being a strict vegetarian for 15 years (and teaching cooking classes at a health foods complex), I was highly skeptical about Suzanne's system. But I'm a researcher, and I did my homework. Food combining is, indeed, an old and accepted theory of healthy eating. This is not an anti-carbo "diet"; it calls for the healthy food groups, only in different combinations so that insulin levels aren't spiked, thus causing the body to store calories as fat.
After reaching 50 and having a size 6 lean, mean machine, I suddenly put on matronly inches. Whose waistline was I seeing in the mirror anyway? Certainly not MINE! I couldn't fit into my clothes. Menopause wreaked havoc with my body. My low-fat vegetarianism didn't work at all for me anymore. All my workouts (Pilates, etc.) couldn't trim the excess inches I was continually adding. I began to feel desperate and out of control. So, as a last resort, I tried Somersizing.
I have known Suzanne was a fabulous cook ever since discovering an article about her culinary expertise 20 years ago. But these recipes and these sauces, in particular, are extraordinary! The latest book with its zucchini noodles, parmesan sauce, mozzarella marinara, and other delectable goodies is a triumph! I love to cook again! The simple wine reduction sauces are fabulous. The information about good fats is "freeing"! My husband and I are losing inches and eating tremendous food. My body is returning to its size 6 dimensions. I couldn't be more positive about this program. The information by Suzanne's endocrinologist is right on-target. It all comes together and finally makes sense. If you don't want to do the program, at least make the delectable foods! And if you DO want to follow the program, buen apetito and viva the weight loss! Also note: Suzanne's no-chemicals, no-preservatives sugar substitute, Somersweet, is due out in May. Another breakthrough for healthy cooks who have had to do without sugar for years. This woman is no dumb blonde. She's on the cutting edge!

Review of The 10% Solution for a Healthy Life: How to Reduce Fat in Your Diet and Eliminate Virtually All Risk of Heart Disease and Cancer (Paperback)

Standing out from a field of "fad" diet books(The Zone;Sugar Busters;Atkins, etc.) like a pearl in a sea of mud,The 10% Solution is a lucid, intelligently written,well-documented eating plan that really works.(I know--I've been following it for some time now, with fantastic results) Kurzweil is NOT a nutritionist--rather,he's a computer scientist--but he's clearly done his homework, and his writing style and format make it easy for anyone to understand the principles of a healthy diet. Yet he doesn't over-simplify,or insult the reader with emotional pleas and lack of documentation. In a nutshell, the "10% Solution" means that no more than 10% of the calories in your diet should come from fat. Extreme? (After all,the FDA,AHA,and other mainstream entities recommend a diet consisting of 30% of calories from fat) Not at all,as Kurzweil convincingly demonstrates. What's extreme is the eating habits cultivated by "developed" societies like our own ov! er the last century, where undue emphasis is placed on fat. The author compares our typical diet with one from rural Asia, along with respective heart disease and cancer rates. The figures are staggering. Yes--despite what you've heard from the latest fad diet promoters--fat IS the culprit(of course,SOME fat is necessary). A truly low-fat,nutritionally balanced eating program is an enormous factor in attaining good overall health. And,yes, you can(and will,no doubt) lose weight on this regimen--but more importantly, you'll feel better and improve your health immensely. Cutting down to 10% of calories from fat does take some adjustments, but it's not as hard to do as many may think, and Kurzweil makes it easier with a section of recipes. I've read quite a few books on diet and nutrition, and this is clearly the best-written one I've personally seen. Read it and change your life for the better.

Review of The Ultimate Workout Log: An Exercise Diary for Everyone (Spiral-bound)

I just joined a gym and I'm really out of shape. This book really answered a lot of my questions about beginning an exercise program. It has a log where I can record the cardio exercises I did and the strengthtraining (including weight lifted, sets and reps). There is also a placefor nutrition notes. The layout is very straight forward and will allow meto track my progress over six months. On Mondays, I write my personalgoals for the week and on Sunday, I write a weekly wrap-up, which reallyholds me accountable for those goals. This book really helps me to keeptrack of my progress in a concrete way.I highly recommend it.

Review of Live in the Balance: The Ground-Breaking East-West Nutrition Program (Paperback)

This book is a fascinating and practical guide to choosing the right foods and lifestyle for your own body.It starts with simple questionnaires to help you understand your body from an "energetic" or Eastern perspective.Prout describes symptoms of excess "heat," "cold," "dampness," "dryness," and "wind" -- all Chinese diagnostic terms. The book then goes on to give the foods and lifestyle strategies to best remedy these imbalances.Someone who is overweight should avoid "damp" foods, for instance, as opposed to counting calories, the Western approach that has obviously been failing us so far.Imbalances are easy to spot and I enjoyed figuring out my pattern. I really like the fact that moods (a temper, irritability, depression) fit in with body patterns. This isa customized approach to eating right and is based on thosands of years of observation rather than hundreds of years of "science" which only seem to correspond with increasing disease and obesity rates.

Product Description
For over three thousand years practitioners of Chinese medicine have known that food is health-giving. Now path-breaking nutritionist Linda Prout synthesizes the basic principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with the science of western nutrition. With a clear focus to help readers achieve balance, Prout introduces the concept of balance and describes the signs and symptoms of various patterns of imbalance from a TCM perspective. She provides simple self-assessments readers can use to determine their own tendencies toward imbalance, and recommends foods, cooking methods, and lifestyle changes to balance each pattern. Fats, proteins, carbohydrates and sugars are each discussed from a western nutrition and eastern perspective, with beneficial and potentially unhealthful choices given for each body pattern.

Review of Eating for Two: The Complete Guide to Nutrition During Pregnancy (Paperback)

This book was interesting and informative... however I was disappointed because I was hoping for suggestions on sample menus and recipes.
I wanted it to help me get the nutitional changes by body needs during pregnancy.
The book tells you technically - nutrient by nutrient what you need... but I didn't find it to be translatable easily into my daily meal planning.
