Review of Power Juices, Super Drinks: Quick, Delicious Recipes to Prevent & Reverse Disease (Paperback)

Power Juices Super Drinks is a wonderful book, full of useful information that is well- presented and easy to access. It is an inspiring treasure of information on healing foods and herbs, and their benefits for treating andpreventing diseases.
The material is presented clearly, withlightness and humor, which Steve Meyerwitz is known for! A major part ofthe book presents drinks, which may be teas, smoothies, citrus juices orother kinds of vegetable or fruit juices, for specific conditions. Thereare chapters on power drinks for the physical body, for the mind, and forlongevity. The longest chapter, called "Power drinks - MedicineChest", details nutritional therapies and recipes for 115 differenthealth disorders.
A tremendous resource on high power foods andherbs, is the chapter titled, "Nature's Finest Healing Foods andHerbs". It is this chapter which inspired me to start growing andeating broccoli sprouts, which contain fantastic amounts of valuablephytochemicals (plant derived substances). One type of phytochemicals isglucosinolates; Enzymes in the body convert these chemicals toisothiocyanates. One isothiocyanate, sulforaphane, is the strongest naturalinducer of our body's own protective enzymes against carcinogens. Thesesubstances have been shown to reduce the incidence, rate of development, and the size of tumors.Broccoli sprouts contain 20 to 50 times moresulforaphane than the average adult broccoli plant! In three days you canraise a crop of broccoli sprouts containing as much sulforaphane as an acreof broccoli would yield in a year! This chapter is a complete pharmacopoeiaof common foods and herbs, full of illuminating information.
Anothervery worthwhile chapter is titled, "Nutrient Sources". Thischapter lists vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, and provides food sourcesthat are loaded with them. Good sources of calories, carbohydrates, fatsand protein are also listed.
People of all nutritionalpersuasions will appreciate this book. It can provide tasty new healthydrinks and teas for those just starting their journey towards naturalhealing. For the already enthusiastic, it can educate and deepen theirunderstanding of many high-powered health foods.

Review of Restoring Your Digestive Health: How the Guts and Glory Program Can Transfom Your Life (Paperback)

I've had wonderful success by just eating or avoiding the foods Drs. Brasco and Rubin recommend. I take only one supplement now (after learning about it in this book), and it's not a brand they listed. They offer alternatives for people who have difficulty finding things and for the "Budgetarily Challenged".Their suggestions helped me tailor a plan that works for me.

Their explanations of diseases, and conventional and alternative treatments enabled me to make better choices, ask my doctors for the right tests, and be an active partner in my treatment.I had followed the advice of some other authors-and I got worse. In this book Dr. Rubin shares how he triumphed over his own digestive disease, and Dr. Brasco shares his clinical successes with his patients. They know what they're talking about.

There's a wealth of valuable information in the resources and books they recommend. This book is helping me regain my health and I feel very fortunate to have found it.

Review of Hypoglycemia: The Classic Healthcare Handbook Completely (Paperback)

There seems to be some disagreement in the reviews of the validity of this book. The foundation of this great book is the over "sugarization" of the American diet that is truly causing havoc to American health. I understand her positions on free range chickens, full spectrum light etc to get the most healthful food product. IMHO that is just a bit beyond the average busy person's time/tolerance for food shopping and preparation. The greatest value by far of this book is it's exposure of hypoglycemia as a serious health problem and its excellent breakdown of how to properly interpret the results of the glucose tolerance test. The disorder of hypoglycemia goes beyond "just having low sugar". Hypoglycemia ties to and creates a very large number of health and personality problems and this book documents that fact exceedingly well.I highly recommend this book to anyone who is overweight, diabetic (or going there),is depressed, has anxiety attacks, or just plain intersted in understanding why low carb is so popular and why it works.

Review of The Secret To Low Carb Success!: How to Get the Most Out of Your Low Carbohydrate Diet (Paperback)

This book is an excellent compilation of all the best advice gleaned from the author's own low carb dieting experience, as well as online resources. Ms. Richard has a witty and entertaining style of writing, which makes this book a genuine pleasure to read. This book is an invaluable resource for anyone on a low carb diet who does not have access to the Internet, or who does not have the time or patience to weed through millions of posts on Internet support boards in order to find those few pearls of wisdom that are always hiding among a proliferation of other posts.
This book includes a brief individual summary of each of the following low carb plans:
the Atkins diet
the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet
the Zone
Sugar Busters!
Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution
Protein Power
The Schwarzbein Principle
Neanderthin
Thin forGood
The Secret to Low Carb Success also provides this summary in the form of a chart, allowing you to compare all of the plans side-by-side.You can reference subjects like caffeine on another comparison chart and see what each of the individual author's opinions is on a given subject.
One of the most helpful sections of this book and will no doubt be Chapter 2, "Know What to Expect." This is where you get the real nitty-gritty -- the lowdown on how much weight you can really expect to lose on a typical low carbohydrate plan, the definition of a true stall and plateau versus the typical periods of slow or no loss that plague all of us, and a discussion of "whooshes" as well as "set points" and "natural body weights" that are difficult to move beyond. I particularly enjoyed the discussion of how muscle growth masks fat loss, and how, as we all know, "scales are for fish".
The book goes on to discuss how water retention masks fat loss. She explains it very well: since a pint is a pound the world around, the weight of the water that we drink and retain fluctuates daily.
Another very valuable section has been devoted to the subject of hidden carbs.Very few of the official diet plan books even touch upon this so-important subject. This book includes images of actual nutritional labels, and it drives this important point home very well.
The author has cleverly combined the advice of many successful dieters into one easy-to-read narrative. Bravo, Laura Richard!
