Review of Mastering Leptin: Your Guide to Permanent Weight Loss and Optimum Health (Third Edition) (Paperback)

I was impressed with the fact that this husband and wife team,in their early 50's, is so committed to bringing us the latest breaking news on leptin and the research related to solving obesity in this country. Their book (now the 2nd edition) explains why leptin is the key hormone that regulates all other hormones in the body, and how leptin imbalance is the precursor to heart disease, thyroid conditions, and cancer. The information is not their opinions, but rather a compilation of ALL scientific data on leptin to date, presented in a fairly easy-to-follow writing style. They give special guidelines for correcting leptin imbalances, including the use of certain supplements, which in turn will lead to correction of a host of other imbalances, like insulin resistance. (As an aside, insulin resistance alone affects 50% of our country's population, contributing hugely to the obesity epidemic.)

I agree that the book is a bit choppy. I think a professional writer could have helped smooth out the rough edges. However, the content is exceptional. I have recently discovered that I am a borderline diabetic with a low-functioning thyroid and insulin resistance, which likely developed as a result of my last pregnancy. Prior to that I had no apparent problems in these areas. This book helps to explain how this happened and is guiding me back to healthy. I am indebted to these authors.

I have also read the Rosedale Diet, which I think is also very good. However, I believe Mastering Leptin explains leptin and all its implications more completely. Mastering Leptin also explains the wisdom in waiting 5 hours between meals and avoiding snacks, and how that is critical to bringing leptin in line. Dr. Rosedale includes snacks in his book, focusing more on the types of foods to eat rather than on scheduling to allow your body to restore its natural rhythm. Eating all the time keeps our bodies too focused on digestion and keeps our insulin levels up. I'd go to the Rosedale Diet for the recipes but to the Mastering Leptin book for the guidance. Good luck to you all.

Review of The Fiber35 Diet: Nature's Weight Loss Secret (Paperback)

I think Brenda Watson is correct in her assessment that eating a high fiber diet can help an individual lose weight. Doughnuts, chips, and candy which are all fiberless and nutritionless tend to pack the pounds on. Eating high fiber foods like whole grains, beans, and broccoli make you feel fuller, so you eat less. Many of us know the feeling of eating junk food and feeling bloated and then hungry pretty soon after.

Brenda goes into depth in her book as to how fiber can be beneficial. She also recommends some interesting ideas such as using a sauna to speed up the metabolism and burn more calories.

The disappointment with the book is that the actual diet and the plan for life relies not on real food but on the use of bars and shakes. I don't see anything wrong with drinking a shake or eating a bar, but I would prefer to eat real food and sadly, that is not in this plan.

I noticed after reading other reviews that Brenda sells bars and shakes, so it does seem like she may have an agenda with the meal plan she proposes. Brenda does offer some great information on fiber, if she had offered a plan with bars/shakes and another plan with "real" food, this could have been a great book. But since she didn't I personally feel there are better fiber plan books on the market.

Review of Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days, Second Edition (Paperback)

Peter Glickman's "Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days, Second Edition" is a definite aide in doing Mr. Stanley Burrough's "Master Cleanser" program.REMEMBER that this is not a DIET but a CLEANSE.This means you only do this periodically, like yearly, for 10 days or more in a single cleanse.

THESE ARE THE MAIN THINGS TO REMEMBER:

-This is not a DIET that one can adopt. This is a TEMPORARY CLEANSE.Just as undergoing surgery is not a new way of life but a short-term treatment where you actually leave the operating table.Think of cleansing for a colonoscopy - you don't continually cleanse for the rest of your life - so don't use the excuse that this is a dangerous diet.
-This is very DIFFICULT IF YOU DO NOT FOLLOW the instructions to the letter.
-The Salt Water Flush is horrible tasting but is ABSOLUTELY necessary in order to remove toxins quickly.Do it even if it is unpleasant for you.
-Buy organic.Use the products as directed. Why would you cleanse to remove toxins and simultaneously add toxins during the cleansing program!
-FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.

I first tried the "Master Cleanser" diet in 2005 and then again in 2006. Both times, I only made it 3 days because I chose to do this diet on my vacation. That did not sit well with my family who wanted to go out and have nice dinners. So, I tried it this time while still working AND with the use of this book by Peter Glickman.

I highly recommend starting this on the night before starting a 3-day weekend or 3 full days off of work. This is only due to the requirement to be near a bathroom during the flushing phase after coming off of solid foods. I truly mean it when I say that you MUST be near (like 2 feet away) a bathroom the first 3 days.I started it at work and had to leave to go home since I was 50 feet away from the bathroom.

I am starting my fourth cleanse in August.During my cleanse in 2007, I made it the entire 10 days. I lost 16 pounds in these 10 days and could truly feel the detoxification. This book and Peter Glickman's book truly helped me with the symptoms that I would experience as the fast went on day to day. Peter includes a great section of questions and answers that address the majority of the issues that people have in conducting the Master Cleanser fast.

The goal is to detoxify the body to the point that one's tongue returns to a natural bright pink color, as most of us have polluted our bodies to the point that we have a whitish coating on our tongues. I did not make it until my tongue was bright pink, but I did gain the benefit of the 10 day fast. My skin became smooth and soft. My energy felt higher. My concentration was clearer in the second half of the fast.

By days 5, 6, 7, and 8, I must warn that you will definitely feel the effects of detoxification. I described it as having a "headache" over my entire body. As long as one has the Lemonade, one can satisfy any hunger. One will experience yearnings for food whenever one smells others eating.

I loan my multiple copies of the two publications "The Master Cleanser" by Stanley Burroughs and "Lose Weight, Have More Energy & Be Happier in 10 Days, Second Edition" by Peter Glickman to everyone I care about. These two books combined are truly the greatest self-healing guide that I have ever used. I highly recommend this if you are experiencing the effects of poor nutrition, such as obesity, HBP, type II diabetes, gout, etc.

Product Description
This is the first book devoted exclusively to the Master Cleanse since Stanley Burroughs wrote the original book in 1976. Written in a clear, simple style, it is based on the author's coaching hundreds of people, both live and on one of the largest Internet bulletin boards. It covers the widespread nature of obesity, the body's method of handling toxins by storing them in fat cells, how to do the cleanse, what detox symptoms are, what to do about them and what pitfalls to avoid. This book also contains personal experiences from scores of people as they did the cleanse day by, what to expect, which days are the worst, how the cleanse affects women, what ingredients to buy and answers the 70 most frequently asked questions. The author, Peter Glickman, has been a chiropractic clinic director, chelation clinic director (alternative medical procedure for plugged arteries), contributing editor to an online alternative health newsletter and president of two computer software companies.
Publisher of best selling diet books prefers Glickman's LOSE WEIGHT...to Craig Claiborne's
By Thomas Lipscomb
March 23, 2008
As the publisher of the number one bestselling CRAIG CLAIBORNE GOURMET DIET, I have tried both Glickman's and Claiborne's regimes, and Glickman's works far better.
I lost 20 lbs in 10 days, and made a major alteration to my permanent diet that keeps the weight off. The diet is simple, sound, easy to master and execute and it works.
Most diets are about as complicated as IRS instructions for your tax return and one can quickly find an excuse for giving up.
Following up the diet with a sigmoidoscopy to take advantage of the newly cleared intestinal tract should be the ultimate way to detect and prevent colon and intestinal cancers.
Any book this short that is this clear and this good should be in everyone's library.

Review of Why Diet and Exercise Fail: How Current Research Contradicts Conventional Wisdom about Weight Loss (Paperback)

This work surveys many different hypotheses for the massive increase in obesity in recent decades, not only in western countries but also in many other parts of the world. Korn surveys not only the usual culprits (fats, excessive calories, sedentary lifestyle, etc.), but also unusual ones (e. g., pollution, viruses). Some parts of his reasoning are more convincing than others.

Korn credits the successes of the Atkins diet not to restriction of carbohydrates, but to the quitting of coffee consumption. (p. 105). This may be correct in part, but cannot be the full answer. (I speak from experience. I lost 50 pounds on the Atkins Diet despite continuing to drink 2-3 cups of coffee a day).As a matter of fact, Atkins did not forbid moderate amounts of caffeine consumption, except in the short Induction phase. Atkins recommended that caffeine consumption be permanently discontinued only by those who get blood-sugar imbalances from it. (See, for instance, THE ATKINS DIABETES REVOLUTION, pp. 237-239).

Likewise, Atkins allows for some fruit-juice consumption (ibid, p. 144), and a tolerable moderate-weight-maintaining daily intake of carbs (ACE: Atkins Carbohydrate Equilibrium: ibid, pp. 129-130). Thus, such observations as fruit juices not necessarily causing obesity (Korn, p. 28), and Thais not being commonly obese despite eating mostly refined rice (Korn, pp. 26-27), are reconcilable with the premises of the Atkins diet.

Do low-carb diets often fail, in long term, because overconsumption of refined carbohydrates is not the cause of obesity?Or is it because, once the brain is trained to want an excess of carbs, it is quite difficult for many individuals to avoid drifting back to old ways of eating over the span of many years?

Nevertheless, Korn has performed a valuable service. The links between coffee, Omega6/Omega-3 imbalances, and obesity are fascinating, and clearly deserve further research.

Product Description
Why Diet and Exercise Fail demonstrates that traditional theories of weight gain cannot fully explain rising rates of obesity in the United States.Agricultural workers are among the most physically active people in California, yet they have one of the highest rates of obesity. The Inuit, or Eskimo, traditionally received 75% of their calories from fat and stayed lean, but eating a high fat diet did not produce weight loss in all the followers of the Atkins diet.In the 1950s, the rural Thai ate a diet with 80% of its calories from white rice, a refined carbohydrate, yet they remained thin.Low calorie diets have been tried since the beginning of the twentieth century to little effect.Over 99% of people who lose weight on low calorie diets return to their previous weight within three years. The problem with these diets is that they do not take into account how different types of food affect hunger levels. To see what could be influencing hunger, the book looks at obesity research that identifies factors which can cause weight gain.Soda consumption tends to predict weight gain, but diet soda consumption is an even stronger predictor of weight gain than is regular soda.Sleep deprivation predicts weight gain and is associated with increased hunger. In fact, people who are overweight tend to have higher levels of hunger than people of normal weight, despite the fact that they have already eaten too much.Increased hunger seems to be the mechanism by which prescription drugs and stress can lead to weight gain. However, hunger does not appear to explain why overweight people are less able to use stored fat and why food makes them feel less full, compared to people who are thin. The American diet underwent huge changes beginning in the twentieth century. Many of these have had profound nutritional implications of which we are not aware.Almost all of the bread products in the United States, including those labeled whole wheat, have had their grain oils removed. This extends their shelf life, but it radically alters their nutrient content.Caffeine, food additives, refined sugars, and chemical pesticides have a profound nutritional impact as well.In addition, the types of fats in the modern diet are different from those which we ate historically.Giving our livestock commercial feed made from corn and soy, instead of grass, has radically altered the types of fats we eat, as has consuming refined vegetable oils. Some of these changes in our diet can cause sleep deprivation, stress, increased hunger, and reduced use of stored fat. Although they are conventional wisdom, many common theories about nutrition are incorrect. While dietary fiber is believed to lower cholesterol and body weight, defatted fiber has no such effect.A nutrient stored in the fat in fiber appears to be responsible for fiber's beneficial effects. Also, while omega-6 rich oils are supposed to be unhealthful and omega-3 rich oils healthful, this is not always the case.A highly anti-inflammatory oil rich in omega-6 is largely removed from the American diet during food processing. Its absence has probably contributed to increasing rates of chronic inflammatory diseases and insulin resistance. While healthful eating is supposed to be difficult, there are relatively easy changes to our diet that can have a profound impact on our weight and our health.

Review of The pH Balance Diet: Restore Your Acid-Alkaline Levels to Eliminate Toxins and Lose Weight (Paperback)

I purchased this book as I began my own research into adapting a pH balanced diet.It has been very helpful.I also believe it is easier to read and absorb the information over some of the other books on the same subject. It offers an easy to follow diet, if one wants to go 100% into the program. For others, the information provided is easy to adapt into any diet program.Simple to follow recipes are included too, some I have tried with good results.

Product Description
Quick and easy yet informative and thorough, The pH Balance Diet tells how to pH-test one's body, correct imbalances, and eliminate toxic overload by following a dietary way of life that works. The book details the physiological process that occurs when digested foods create a pH imbalance. For example, since the body is naturally alkaline, problems arise when it processes too many acid-forming foods such as meat, dairy, wheat and sugar. The resulting excess acid waste leads to low energy levels, poor skin condition, brittle bones and serious health issues, including weight gain. The pH Balance Diet is a system that dramatically reverses this process. It reveals the top 80 alkaline-forming superfoods and specifies which acid-forming foods to avoid. An easy-to-follow section with over 40 recipes- witha special section on drinks that features a "juicing-for-superhealth" program - is included to help guide readers through the plan.
