Review of Say Good-Bye to Illness (3rd Edition) (Say Good-Bye To...) (Paperback)

As many people know, suffering from allergies is often times easier than following the doctor's advice to control them. Nambudripad addresses this issue in her book, "Say Good-Bye To Illness."
The book "Say Good-Bye To Illness" is an excellent resource book. It is filled with practical advice and tips on how to treat allergies with complete success.
Over the years Nambudripad's name has been maligned and sneered at as she pioneered the idea that it's not just heredity or pathogens that lead to chronic illness but unseen allergies accumulated over time. Allergies have always been presented to Americans as the hay fever sufferer or the anaphylactic peanut-eater. But millions of Americans are suffering from allergies to things they come in contact with daily and don't show up as a sneeze or anaphylactic shock but eventually lead to serious chronic illness. Traditional medical treatments are a miserable failure as attested to by many of our chronically ill. As the drugs and medicines have been added to the mix instead of noninvasive NAET treatments, Americans are suffering complications and a prognosis of continual deterioration. Dr. Nambudripad's idea that treating allergies with NAET (Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique) can lead to eradicating illness and better health for a host of chronically ill patients has been vindicated.
The NAET is a 4 step approach. Step 1 is where you begin treating the basic 10 immune boosters to tip the scale to bolster your immune system and get the immune system up and running to continue to Step 2. In this step you begin to treat individual allergies you may have to foods, substances, the environment, (any and all allergies and/or sensitivities) and these are continued based on your condition and rate of recovery. Some patients need three NAET treatments per week to start and then taper off as their condition improves. Step 3 is where you begin to assimilate and understand how NAET works to return you to a state of health and in Step 4 you learn to test and treat allergies on yourself. "Say Good-Bye to Illness" discusses each of these steps and concentrates mainly on Steps 3 and 4. "The Naet Guide Book" is the companion book to "Say Good-Bye to Illness" and it is a must read for every patient starting out on their NAET journey and it focuses mainly on Steps 1 and 2.
"Say Good-Bye To Illness" covers in great detail how Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Techniques work. The first section of the book through Chapter 7 delves into what the techniques are and why and how they work. The second section, Chapter 8 through Chapter 11, describes NAET through the explanation of muscle response testing, causes of disease, and the discovery of NAET, to the role that Chinese medicine and the acupuncture meridians play in this exciting new health treatment.
Some of my favorite chapters are found in the third section of the book. Chapters 12 through Chapter 22 detail how specific allergies affect different organs in the body from the digestive system, respiratory system, skin, joints, genitourinary, circulatory, and nervous systems to the myriad of miscellaneous disorders like addictions, yeast, candidiasis, mold, fungus, CFS, eye disorders, pain disorders, autism, asthma and so many more.
This section's explanations are dotted with over 100 success stories to give the reader a pleasant break from the medical detail and also affords the reader a moment to reflect how patients have backed up Nambudripad's medical explanations in these chapters. Extraordinary, yummy stories from patient-volunteered testimonials, these are patients' tales about their NAET journeys and amazing successes. Stories of people having rid themselves of plaguing pains and illnesses and how NAET successfully eradicated health conditions like peanut anaphylaxis, allergy to shellfish, constant sciatic pain, food allergies, hives, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease, colitis, lactose intolerance, hay fever, bronchitis, asthma, dust allergy, eczema, hair loss, arthritis, osteoarthritis, sports injury, psoriasis, lupus, bed wetting, allergy to dairy, PMS, sinus headaches, migraines, multiple sclerosis, insomnia, osteoporosis, diaper rash and so many more which all help the reader truly understand the miracle that is NAET.
YES you can eat anything you want again! You can eat dairy, gluten or peanuts and have pizza, cake or even shellfish, wine or coffee. The key of course is eradicating the allergies you have to the foods you love. You can learn to handle your allergies on the fly after a night out where you know you have sinned. Just keep a little of what it was you ate and self treat it! This book includes a tip to master self-testing.
This 500-page book includes information for the multiple chemical sensitive patient as well as vital nutritional advice to maintain good health.
The book "Say Good-Bye to Illness" makes living a fun and active life a real possibility again for so many of us, and it is an enjoyable read I highly recommend!

Review of Wilson's Temperature Syndrome: A Reversible Low Temperature Problem (Paperback)

While the first few chapters are heavy on medical terminology, overall this book is an excellent guide for anyone wondering about the specifics of WTS and its treatment.Very detailed and very readable.

Product Description
Formerly titled, Wilson's Thyroid Syndrome - A Reversible Thyroid Problem, this book describes a reversible low body temperature problem. Are the symptoms of a slow metabolism due to low thyroid function, or are they due to low body temperature? The body temperature is the key, and that's why the name has been updated to Wilson's Temperature Syndrome. The thyroid system plays a critical role in maintaining adequate metabolism and/or body temperature. When thyroid function is inadequate then the body temperature can drop, resulting in the symptoms of a slow metabolism. In such situations thyroid treatment can help restore the body temperature and therefore alleviate the symptoms. But symptoms of low body temperature and slow metabolism can occur even when thyroid blood tests are normal (this is Wilson's Temperature Syndrome). If you're suffering from symptoms typical of low thyroid function (in other words, symptoms of slow metabolism / low body temperature) and your thyroid blood tests are normal, that may mean that your symptoms are curable! Many patients with symptoms like Fatigue, Depression, Fluid Retention, Easy weight gain, PMS, Headaches, Migraines, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Itchiness, Insomnia, and many others, respond very well to the normalization of their low body temperatures despite having normal blood tests (this is the sense in which the temperature is the key). And more importantly, the symptoms often remain improved even after the treatment's been discontinued. This low temperature problem, Wilson's Temperature Syndrome, is reversible in the same way that certain female hormone problems are reversible. For example, some women with irregular periods can be cycled on birth control pills (female hormones) for several months to regulate their bleeding. Then, when they are weaned off the pill, their periods often remain regular even after the pill's been discontinued. In a similar way, Wilson's Temperature Syndrome can often be corrected by cycling patients on a certain thyroid hormone protocol for a period of time to normalize their body temperatures. This book is an excellent description of the syndrome and its manifestations and introduces the treatment of WTS.It fully explains what it feels like to have WTS so people can get a very good idea of whether or not they think they may be suffering from it.If people do believe that they may have the condition, the Doctor's Manual for Wilson's Temperature Syndrome exlains the treatment protocol in complete detail.

Review of Bypassing Bypass Surgery: Chelation Therapy: A Non-surgical Treatment for Reversing Arteriosclerosis, Improving Blocked Circulation, and Slowing the Aging Process (Paperback)

I'm not joking!
My dad is an MD and was skeptical when my mom (herself an RN) insisted on having Chelation Therapy over 10 years ago.My mom was not far from the exit from this life from many different ailments (including arteries which were 90% clogged). After several treatments, mom's health perked up so much that my dad became a believer and went in for Chelation Therapy himself (his arteries were also mostly clogged).Mom and Dad are still alive and in pretty good health.
My uncle had serious heart disease caused by clogged arteries, and was already in line to get open heart surgery when mom told him about what Chelation Therapy did for her.So my uncle dropped his open-heart surgery for the Chelation Therapy and never looked back.
My copy of the book is the 1990 printing of the book that my mom gave me after she became a "convert."I have been spreading the word to anybody I know who has heart problems.
Thank you Dr. Elmer Cranton for your dedication to Chelation Therapy and for saving so many lives.
--George Stancliffe

Product Description
The results of a Duke University study recently published in the "New England Journal of Medicine" indicate that of the nearly 400,000 people in the U.S. each year who undergo a bypass operation using a heart-lung machine, an estimated forty percent risk a substantial decrease in mental ability within five years after the surgery.
Dr. Elmer Cranton published "Bypassing Bypass" in 1984 as a comprehensive introduction to EDTA chelation therapy, which opens blocked arteries without invasive surgery. The book became increasingly popular among consumers and health care providers seeking a safer, noninvasive, and lower-cost alternative to the traditional bypass surgery. With the advancements in medical technology, scientific research, and an increase in the number of practitioners offering chelation therapy, Dr. Cranton knew that an updated, expanded edition was needed. "Bypassing Bypass Surgery" will bring readers up to date on the latest studies and findings regarding chelation therapy and its current status in the medical community.

Review of Stedman's Medical Dictionary (Hardcover)

I am in the health insurance industry, going to school to become a medical coder. This dictionary has been very helpful to me.I believe that this dictionary is geared more toward people that already have a knowledge of medical terminology, as when you look up a word, the definition sometimes is so complex that if you are not familiar with terms, you'll find yourself looking up another word just to define the original definition! This is not a bad thing, as it keeps you learning and learning is power; however if you do not like this type of thing, you may want to look around for another type of medical dictionary. Personally, I love this dictionary.

Review of A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health (Paperback)

I consider myself one of the luckiest moms on earth that I got turned onto a healthy nutrient track when I was pregnant and for my post partum recovery. And I'm not talking about the blah, blah, blah healthy stuff..The stuff we all know..eat right, exercise, etc...that stuff has been written about for years..from banal REader's Digest to Oprah Late At Night. What I'm talking about is the alternative, cutting edge stuff.Like replacing some of the lost omega-3 oils DHA and EPA which I leared awhile ago is downright stolen by the baby from the mom during pregnancy. And I made it my business to supplement my pregnancy and post pregnancy with the right nutrients so that I could avoid Post Partum depression with my new baby.I should say, avoid PPD without Prozac.Well, now new moms are lucky because everything I learned from various sources and vaious experts are now in ONE book. This is a one stop shop for any new mom who wants to take care of her body while taking care of her new baby.Raffelock and Roundtree have really answered any question I had and any new mom who might ask "what's happening to me?"Or things like, "Why is my skin so dry?""Why am I forgetful?"And more importantly... "How can I fix it?"
This information is invaluable. ... But, if you follow some of the steps in this book, you can find some of the good nutrients at local health food stores. The key is the right items in the right amounts.
Personally, I think Prozac or as I call it, "Vitamin P" is being handed out way too easily and new moms have so much going on with their bodies that I would rather see nutrition be supplemented before jumping on Vitamin P.
This book must be read by all new moms!

Product Description
Having a baby can and should be one of the most joyful experiences of a woman's life. While there are hundreds of books that provide information on how to ensure the development of a healthy baby, few of them dedicate more than a few pages to the nourishment of the mother herself during this physically and emotionally demanding time. It is rarely discussed, but women commonly experience a wide variety of ailments during the postpartum period, from depression to anxiety, backache, and loss of libido.

A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health is the first book by physicians that is devoted entirely to telling women how they can prevent postpartum problems and attain optimum health after the delivery of their babies. Elements of the program, which is meant to be adopted during-or, if possible, before-pregnancy, include diet, nutritional supplementation, exercise, hormone-balancing, the use of medicinal herbs, and conventional medications. Developed by the authors in clinical practice, this program has a proven track record in helping women to avoid and overcome postpartum difficulties.

Review of Selling to Anyone Over the Phone (Paperback)

... when it comes to selling over the telephone!! Renee Walkup & Sandra McKee have created a superb guide to selling over the telephone. This isn't your standard "smile when you talk" stuff. These two "get it" that selling over the phone is a totally different beast than selling in person, and that's what makes this book stand out from the many like it.

Another thing that makes this book stand out from a lot of books on the same subject is that it covers the entire sales cycle, not just prospecting. It covers it from a phone perspective. You CAN'T see your customers when you are talking to them (or more importantly, listening to them) over the telephone, so the book gives you a game plan to size up the attitudes of the different people you come into contact with.

The book also gives you an action framework that covers the entire sales cycle, pointing out all along the way the nuances and challenges inherent in telephone selling. All I can say, having completely read the book and having put many of its principles into practice, is that it would be a bargain at ten times the price. Check out their web site (SALESPEAK) as well. There's useful content along the same lines there.

Review of The PowerScore GMAT Sentence Correction Bible (Paperback)

What I liked most about this book over the others on the market is the depth it goes into the subject matter. Yes, it does cover some basic sentence grammar but I found this a helpful review since grammar was not taught formally at my school. If English is not your native language, I could see this being a great help/refresher for you. But this book goes deeper into the subject, allowing the reader to see the tricks and the pitfalls the GMAT tries to throw at you.

The layout of the book makes it easy to use as a study guide. Unlike some other companies test-prep material, the questions are original with in-depth explanations and the book offers tips on strategy and typical errors throughout each section. While some other guides quote and cite extensively from the Official Guide, this book offers you a fresh perspective with unique practice questions.

Overall it is a great book and one that I highly recommend.

Review of Politically Incorrect Nutrition: Finding Reality in the Mire of Food Industry Propaganda (Paperback)

It seems like so much of the information we internalize is gathered from news snippets and commercials. We hear things like: eggs are bad; drink lots of milk and green tea.The problem is that we are not sure why these things are true. How many of us hear the snippet and then spend the time reading all the opposing scientific papers to determine why the statement was made so we can make informed decisions about making a change in our diet?Michael Barbee has done the research for us in his book Politically Incorrect Nutrition: Finding Reality in the Mire of Food Industry Propaganda.

The book covers a variety of nutritional topics and challenges conventional thinking citing historical sources as to why we believe certain things. For example, the conventional thinking on eating eggs is that we shouldn't eat too many as they are high in fat and cholesterol or that we should throw out the yolk and only eat the white. The author takes us through the history of why eggs were originally found to be unhealthy-a study conducted on dried egg yolk powder, not whole, fresh, organic, free-range chicken eggs. Since 1945 egg consumption has dropped by almost 50%, yet there has not been a subsequent drop in heart disease. The author says that eggs are nutrient dense and that "eggs have the best nutrient package of any food we can eat." He ties in the politics of cholesterol paranoia by making the connection with greedy corporate America. The emphasis placed on cholesterol being bad is misguided and has led the drug companies to earn mega-bucks by selling cholesterol lowering drugs (statins) to unsuspecting citizens.

Assumptions made about eggs are just one topic covered in this book. There are also chapters on green tea, soy, cholesterol, conjugated linoleic acid, fluoridation, aspartame, osteoporosis, bovine growth hormone, plastics and microwaves, vitamin C, food irradiation, and vegetarianism. The book concludes with a chapter on whether or not there is indeed a perfect "best diet" for everybody.

If you are like me, you are constantly questioning conventional thinking.Politically Incorrect Nutrition questions our conventional thinking on foods. But don't take my word for it, read the book and find out!

Review of Martial Arts After 40 (Paperback)

The hardest I've ever been hit was by a 57 year-old Japanese martial artist who nearly broke my leg with an arm block, a truly amazing feat. If you truly understand the techniques and bio-mechanics, age matters not in the martial arts.

This interesting book covers attributes of fitness, flexibility, power, reflexes, coordination, speed, and endurance with a focus on older martial artists. There is pretty good coverage on the effects of aging and how to train hard without hurting yourself. The sections on injury prevention, self-care, and over training are worth the price of admission. If you've never practiced martial arts before, the sections on progression in the martial arts, sparring, and forms are also very good. They are not particularly useful if you've been doing this a while, however. The introduction and the first few chapters are very basic indeed. The section on weapons forms near the end is a nice bonus though.

All in all the vast majority of material in this tome has been covered better in other books, some written by Kim himself. The target audience is the middle-aged beginner who is interested in pursuing an education in martial arts. If you are over 40, new to martial arts, and only going to purchase one book, this is it.

If you have been training for a while I wouldn't put this too high on the priority list. I'd recommend "Ultimate Flexibility: A Complete Guide to Stretching for Martial Arts" by Sang H. Kim along with "The Fighter's Body: An Owner's Manual: Your Guide to Diet, Nutrition, Exercise and Excellence in the Martial Arts" by Loren W. Christensen instead. Yeah, it's two books rather than one, but I think that combined they have the depth advanced practitioners require.

Review of From Fatigued to Fantastic (Paperback)

From Fatigued to Fantastic by Jacob Teitelbaum MD, Third Edition.

Most doctors are familiar with Dr. Teitelbaum featured as an eloquent keynote speaker on the medical lecture circuit, dazzling the audience with his encyclopedic knowledge of both conventional and natural medicine.Trained in internal medicine, Jacob Teitelbaum, is a gifted and brilliant medical researcher and clinician. He is also a model for ethical business conduct, because unlike other crass, commercially oriented docs who hide their knowledge or charge for it, Teitelbaum openly shares his medical knowledge with the public and other doctors. All of Teitelbaum's treatment protocols are listed in Appendix G of the book, and are posted on his web site.In addition, all profits from books and nutritional supplements are donated to charity.

The 400 page book is lengthy, and is actually four books in one.Where previous authors have written entire books on each of the four main topics, with the acronym SHIN for Sleep, Hormones, Infections and Nutrition, Teitelbaum combines them all into one large volume which canbe used as desk reference on chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.

In addition, the book can serve as an introductory text for the open minded MD interested in integrating natural medicine into a conventional medical practice, since sleep disorders, hormonal imbalance, chronic or hidden infections, and nutritional deficiencies are some of the more common reasons to seek medical attention.

This is the third edition of his book, and Teitelbaum has managed to make a great book even better. Those familiar with the work of the Connecticut cardiologist, Steven Sinatra MD, will recognize the triad of D-Ribose, L-carnitine and Co-Enzyme Q-10 mentioned by Teitelbaum to jump start energy in the chronicly fatigued.

Insomnia or poor quality sleep is a major issue for many chronic fatigue sufferers, creating a vicious cycle which perpetuates the disorder.Teitelbaum provides a long list of natural remedies such as L-theanine 5-HTP, L-Tryptophan, Melatonin, and Magnesium, as well as today's prescription drugs for sleep heavily advertised on television.

The Hormonal Support chapter is the meat of the book, with Teitelbaum crediting the landmark work, the Safe Use of Cortisol, by McK Jefferies, and Broda Barnes' work on natural thyroid. To these medical greats,Teitelbaum adds his own unique insights gleaned from years of clinical practice. For example, Teitelbaum finds that most patients need only 5 to 12.5 mg of cortisol, andrecommends keeping cortisol dosage below 20 mg per day to avoid adrenal suppression.

Like many other natural medicine docs, Teitelbaum finds bio-identical hormone supplementation important for a successful outcome, and asserts that bio-identicals are safe, a conclusion based on his own clinical experience and medical literature reviews by Kent Holtorf, MD, posted on Teitelbaum's website.

Teitelbaum found that many of his patients had chronic infections of sinuses, urinary tract, prostate, and respiratory system, and had taken multiple courses of antibiotics leading to kill-off of the friendly bacteria in the colon, as well as fungal overgrowth, also called Candidiasis.Teitelbaum credits The Yeast Connection by William Crooks for much of this information which includes a lengthy discussion of anti-fungal drugs and natural remedies for Candidiasis.

The Nutrition chapter covers a detailed program with a complete vitamin, mineral program with recommended dosages, and discusses dietary avoidance of caffeine, alcohol, sugar, white flour and other practical considerations.

My hat is off in admiration and thanks to Jacob Teitelbaum MD, for this third edition of an important book, the definitive work on chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. No doubt, many have benefitted and will continue to benefit from the medical insights in this book.We expect and look forward to a continuing stream of valuable insights in future works as his medical career continues.

Other books recommended are Pain Free 1,2,3 by Jacob Teitelbaum MD, The Safe Use of Cortisol by McK Jefferies, and Adrenal Fatigue by Wilson.

Review of Generation XL: Raising Healthy, Intelligent Kids in a High-Tech, Junk-Food World (Hardcover)

A must read for every parent. It is wonderfully written, easy to read, full of common sense advise.I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in feeding their children healthy foods and in helping them develop healthy eating habits.

Product Description

Childhood is a pivotal time for good nutrition. Organs and blood streams nurtured with junk food cannot build a foundation for good health and longevity as an adult. Drs. Joseph Mercola and Ben Lerner believe profound inactivity, addiction to electronic media, and diets of super-sized fast food and sugar-laden beverages have created a national emergency. Generation XL is a clarion call and a detailed guide to giving your child a vibrant, successful future and a healthy, wholesome, invigorating youth.

As children riddled with pain, illness, learning disorders, and even depression begin to show up everywhere, rather than looking at brain development, nutrition, and lack of movement as the culprits, concerned parents are turning to more and more medications. Think about that. Is that how we were designed? To make medication a way of life and to be drugged early on a consistent basis?

What does the future hold for us when kids are overweight, out of shape, and taking medications for the effects? What kind of children are we creating?

This is not a diet book-far, far from it. Dropping another diet book into the same culture will do nothing but take up more room on your shelf. Generation XL shows you how kids were created to eat, breathe, sleep, run, and live. At the same time, Drs. Mercola and Lerner help you change your family culture and recognize where the culture around you isn't working so you can avoid it or help to change it.

Since prevention is always easier (and wiser) than cure, incorporating the lifestyle changes suggested in Generation XL gives your child a realistic way to reach and maintain a healthy weight; dramatically reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other health risks; and build a strong body and positive mental attitude, maximizing his or her IQ and giving the best chance for success.

Review of Nourishing Wisdom: A Mind-Body Approach to Nutrition and Well-Being (Paperback)

One of the traps which many of us fall into when we become aware of the relationship between nutrition and health is that we establish a set of dietary rules according to which we label foods as either "good"or "bad."Once a certain food has been assigned to the"bad" category, we might even become critical of ourselves andothers for desiring or eating that food. The more zealous we are in ourconviction that we have found the one right way of eating, the more limitedwe become in our understanding of food and our interaction with it.
Thistitle sets out to dispel the myth that there could ever be a standarddietary system guaranteed to meet everyone's nutritional requirements.Theauthor, a nutritional psychologist, approaches his mission from a trulyholistic perspective.Rather than proposing yet another ideal diet basedon the perfect composition of specific nutrients, he explores themultidimensional dynamics of nourishment, reaching far beyond the purelyscientific and chemical aspects of nutrition.
Although he does not denythe impact of eating high-quality foods, Mr. David invites the reader toconsider other factors which are equally significant in determining whethera meal is truly nourishing: The less tangible "ingredients" of ameal, such as the consciousness with which it is eaten, as well as theambiance of our surroundings, and the people in whose company we dine, areall part of the nourishing experience and profoundly affect the body andmind on both the physical and subtle energetic levels.
"NourishingWisdom" suggests that choosing the "right" foods is lessimportant than eating whatever one chooses wholeheartedly and withawareness. To be fully nourished by food, we must experience it throughboth the action of chewing and the sensation of taste. Our nutritionalrequirements are continuously changing with variables such as age, theenvironment we live in, and nature's seasons. One of the exercisesdescribed in the book is listening for body feedback, which allows thebody's intuitive wisdom to determine which foods would be most nourishingat a given time.
Each chapter in this highly readable book features asummary of the main points discussed, as well as suggestions for how thereader could work with these in his or her own life.Someone who has aweight problem, for instance, will find the chapters addressing theconnection between food and love, and the application of affirmativewillpower, most helpful. And nearly everyone will benefit from therevelation that the digestion and assimilation of foods are affected by thebody posture which we assume during a meal--finally a valid reason whyone should not slouch at the dinner table!

Product Description
"Marc David eloquently describes the importance of addressing the emotional and spiritual aspects of our lives in order to truly nourish ourselves." --Dean Ornish, M.D. Combining the principles of nutritional awareness, personal growth, and body psychology, Nourishing Wisdom provides practical methods for redefining the role food plays in our lives. Review of Family Nurse Practitioner Certification Review (Paperback)

While I was using this book to prep for my AANP exam, I kept thinking to myself that the questions in this book were not like the questions I had seen in other preparatory courses and books. The sample questions go into such minutia and are not reflective of broader concepts and critical thinking that are needed for the exam. Also, there were quite a few mistakes and typos in the book. Perhaps this book is more reflective of the ANCC exam content...but I doubt it. The disc was OK, some of the test questions on the disc did not go into great rationales for correct and incorrect answers. Fitzgerald's review materials are much better and far more reflective of exam content.

Product Description
This outstanding, comprehensive review resource provides the necessary tools to prepare for the Family Nurse Practitioner certification exam, with over 1,300 multiple-choice review questions based on the actual exam content and format. Clinical chapters are organized by body system, and are subdivided into three sections: Physical Exam and Diagnostic Tests; Disorders; and Pharmacology. Answers and rationales are provided at the end of each chapter. Other chapters include test questions that focus on growth and development, general health supervision and maintenance, and professional competencies inherent in the role of the ANP. A new CD-ROM contains all of the questions from the book to generate an unlimited number of 175-question sample exams designed to match the length and question distribution of the actual FNP certification exams.

Review of The Upside of Turbulence: Seizing Opportunity in an Uncertain World (Hardcover)

Having been forced to read Porter and Chandler's weighty tombs in business school, and found little connection between academic studies and business success, I'm always skeptical of books that claim to help discover opportunities or define business strategies. Professor Sull however combines well-researched studies with a lucid writing style that builds his case chapter-by-chapter and mixes old ideas together in a new and compelling way. There an absence of absurd diagrams that frequently litter books like these, and Dilbert-esque "what on earth does that mean?" acronyms and buzz phrases.

The essential idea is that agility is the key to business success especially in difficult times. While this may not seem groundbreaking, the author elaborates on this concept by comparing winners and losers in various industries, and looking at the inherent cultural elements in organizations that decide their ability to be agile. Personally, I'm a huge fan of this concept, having cheer-leaded agile software and project management concepts for years, and the book makes a strong case for scrapping the 5-year corporate plan and taking a more nimble approach to seizing opportunities.

Also, in all the business books I've ever read, no author has had the confidence to accept that luck plays a significant role in the success of strategy. Porter brushes this under the carpet with the "environmental factors" umbrella, but Sull grasps the idea firmly and credits chance with the significant role it deserves. Rather than undermining his theory, in many ways random chance provides the endless environmental change that makes an agile response so essential.

Overall, apart from being an enjoyable read, I'd highly recommend this to anyone who is looking to change traditional thinking in their organization - there are many interesting case studies and concepts that will challenge standard strategic thinking.

Review of The Edgar Cayce Remedies (Paperback)

This is a good book. I like that it not only describes Edgar Cayce's trance suggestions and philosophy of healing but that it is written by Dr. William McGarey who used to be one of the founding doctors of the medical clinic in Phoenix, Arizona that used the Cayce readings when appropriate to cure many illnesses, even those considered incurable.

However, because of the title of the book, I expected it to be a listing of various Cayce remedies such as herbs, lotions, foods. Instead, it lists remedies to undertake for various types of ailments. It's written in three parts. The first describes the functioning of the human body. The second sections lists various types of healing regimens suggested in the Cayce readings such as castor oil packs, prayer and meditation, and consulting dreams plus more conventional types of healing regimens such as diet and nutrition, exercise, manipulation, and massage. The third section is the best because it lists various body systems such as the digestive organs, the skin, and the heart and vascular system, and describes how to get that system healthy and keep it healthy.

I find it very helpful to get a sense of how the body works from Cayce's very holistic perspective. However, I would have preferred that when Cayce readings are mentioned, that they be quoted and the numbers of the readings listed as they are in The Edgar Cayce Handbook for Health Through Drugless Therapy.

If you are interested in listings of various healing regimens, there's Edgar Cayce Encyclopedia of Healing (Edgar Cayce) that lists various ailments and their cures and An Edgar Cayce Encyclopedia of Foods for Health and Healing, which lists foods and food combinations suggested to heal various physical incoordinations, plus Edgar Cayce on Healing Foods for Body, Mind, and Soul, another books on the foods and food combinations recommended in the Cayce readings.

A good book but I'd choose The Edgar Cayce Handbook for Health Through Drugless Therapy first because it is a "how to" of the Cayce remedies and it quotes the readings directly including their reading numbers.

Review of Arnold: The Education of a Bodybuilder (Paperback)

The book is an autobiography of Arnold, up through the mid-70s. It is interesting to be inside the mind of a super-athlete such as Schwarzenegger. He conveys how and why he rose to become what many believeto be the greatest bodybuilder of all-time. He writes about many of thedistractions of the early days -- girls, school, parental disaproval, ayear of army duty -- and how he dealt with these and managed to stayfocused on his dream to be the best at the sport.
Within five years hebecame Mr. Universe. He perservered to become more than just a greatbodybuilder. He became a superstar. After he had beat every otherbodybuilder of his time, he decided to do away with competing andaccomplish his next set of goals. He went into acting, and as we all know, became an international moviestar. In addition he went into the promotionside of bodybuilding, running competions such as Mr. Olympia, Mr. Universe, and of course, the Arnold Classic. He also set up many gyms in severalcountries.
The second half of the book is a rough guide on how to begina progressive resistance program, additional motivational advice, nutritionand the like.
Throughout the book he demonstrates the many benifits heobtained from bodybuilding -- optimal health, discipline, mind control, etc. Basically, I found it very inspirational to read. However, I wouldsuggest not to solely rely on the information in the second half forworkout planning. Though it is good information, it is somewhat brief, andit is WHAT WORKED FOR HIM. Everyone varies in their response to weighttraining (i.e. how quickly their muscles grow) due to geneticpredispositions, such as natural metabolism level, andand I would suggestgetting additional, more comprehensive information, such as Gold's Gym MassBuilding Training and Nutrition System, or check your local bookstore anddo some browsing through the selection to see what appeals to yourinterest.

Five-time Mr. Universe, seven-time Mr. Olympia, and Mr. World, Arnold Schwarzenegger is the name in bodybuilding.
Here is his classic bestselling autobiography, which explains how the "Austrian Oak" came to the sport of bodybuilding and aspired to be the star he has become.
"I still remember that first visit to the bodybuilding gym. I had never seen anyone lifting weights before. Those guys were huge and brutal....The weight lifters shone with sweat; they were powerful looking, Herculean. And there it was before me -- my life, the answer I'd been seeking. It clicked. It was something I suddenly just seemed to reach out and find, as if I'd been crossing a suspended bridge and finally stepped off onto solid ground."
Arnold Schwarzenegger
Arnold shares his fitness and training secrets -- demonstrating with a comprehensive step-by-step program and dietary hints how to use bodybuilding for better health. His program includes a special four-day regimen of specific exercises to develop individual muscle groups -- each exercise illustrated with photos of Arnold in action.
For fans and would-be bodybuilders, this is Arnold in his own words.

Review of A Return to Healing: Radical Health Care Reform and the Future of Medicine (Hardcover)

I rarely comment on books I read. For one thing, there are just way too many out there, and for another, I'm very selective and maybe a bit over-critical.As an author of two books, I do appreciate the effort that it takes to bring a book to life.I am working on my third at the moment and I have been writing and researching it for nearly a year!A dear friend of mine, Len Saputo, has co-authored several books over his 40year career as an Internist.During that time he has developed an amazing radio program with his wife Vicki Saputo, R.N., that broadcasts weekly in the San Francisco area.He has created and evolved the Health Medicine Forum over these years into an awesome "town meeting" of sorts that brings together experts in the medical and health-related fields and addresses major issues at the grassroots level.

All this experience - and more - makes this stellar physician the ideal person to author the new book, "A Return to Healing."Len has the right combination of wisdom, experience, and heart to take on the American health care system like no one else can.At a time when the Obama administration is presenting controversial health care reform,"A Return to Healing" is more poignant than ever. The fact is, Dr. Saputo has been working on this book for years - so it is no simple response to current events. This book not only looks at the challenging health care landscape in the U.S. today, but it provides an in-depth look at what brought America to this condition... and most importantly, what is required for us to move to a new level of caring for ourselves and those in need.

Len is no "typical" physician; he is amongst the small percent who really understands the worlds of East and West, of allopathic and complementary medicine, and of treatment and healing. If you are a layperson confused by what you are hearing about medical care and the pharmaceutical companies these days, this book will open your eyes to the concept of "health medicine."If you are a health care practitioner, reading Len's work with inspire you to your potential.

Product Description
For several decades, a rapidly emerging new medical paradigm has supported a renaissance in our understanding of lifelong wellness. In this timely book, Dr. Saputo presents the inspiring story of this new medicine, and reveals how it can unlock the door to a health care system that works for all Americans.
Corporatized medicine only gets to work once disease occurs. Integrative medicine, on the other hand, prioritizes prevention and non-invasive treatments as the first line of defense, and blends the best-evidenced solutions from both mainstream and alternative healing modalities.
Conventional medicine's obsession with profitably treating symptoms drives up the cost of health care. And with nearly half of us lacking access to adequate health insurance, how do we deliver care to every American? Saputo and cowriter Byron Belitsos argue that single-payer national health insurance is a necessary but insufficient solution. A genuine return to healing requires that we combine regulatory reform with support for a transformed medical paradigm.
Dr. Saputo's novel prescription for change draws from his front-line work as a cofounder of the Health Medicine movement and originator of one of America s first integrative medical clinics. Studded with essential wisdom for healthy living and with compelling stories drawn from his forty years of practice, A Return to Healing is rich with the latest research in both biomedical science and health care policy and is a superb guide to the future of medicine.

Review of Preventing Alzheimer's: Ways to Help Prevent, Delay, Detect, and Even Halt Alzheimer's Disease and OtherForms of Memory Loss (Paperback)

As someone whose father died from Alzheimer's and whose mother is suffering from this terrible disease, I wish this book was written years ago. I've read a lot about the disease and Drs. Shankle and Amen have written the best user friendly book on the subject. The brain diagrams, along with the descriptions of the areas of the brain, and what behaviors each area is responsible for, makes for an enjoyable read. Most importantly, however, is the overall upbeat tone of the book. An early diagnosis can make a huge difference in the life of the sufferer as well as their caregiver, so one need not feel their condition is hopeless. The new therapies Dr. Shankle mentions, along with over-the-counter supplements show real progress has been made in treating all kinds of dementia. Another important aspect of the book is the Shankle-Amen Early Dementia Detection Questionnaire which assesses one's risk factor. I know from taking this test that I need to have a neurological check-up every year since both parents had Alzheimer's, and by doing so I can effectively stave off the disease. This is an easy read on a complicated disease. Shankle and Amen are to be commended for knowing their audience and speaking to them appropriately. Well done!

Review of The Beginning Runner's Handbook: The Proven 13-Week Walk-Run Program (Paperback)

I started tentatively, being 85 pounds overweight, a couch potato, and an overeater (obviously), with bad knees and a bad back but I knew I had to do SOMETHING to start participating in my own life and destiny. If you're in a similar spot, and you've gotten as far as "What", this book is a tool that will give you the "Hows."

Written economically and informally, it's packed with information beginning runners and walkers need, from stretching and shoe selection to injury prevention. The heart of the program is an easy-to-follow schedule that starts slow (run 30 seconds, then walk 4:30, and repeat seven times your first day) and builds every week. The plan is flexible, simple, and requires nothing more than a watch, a pair of shoes, and your commitment to yourself three times per week. If you're completely sedentary, you can start with the 13-week walk program to build your stamina before taking on running. And there's an intermediate program, when you're done with your first 13 weeks of running and looking for the "next cut."

At the end of thirteen weeks, I was running 65 minutes without stopping, I had shed 35 pounds, I avoided injury and felt BETTER than when I started. I was having FUN! I realized that completing the program was about far more than running -- I had a grip on my destiny, and I was participating in life, not just watching everyone else. I realized, in my bones, that I can do ANYTHING, and breathing hard three times a week seemed a small price to pay for that. Now I look forward to my runs, and haven't missed a running day since I started over a year ago, and all 85 extra pounds are gone for good. If you're committed to yourself, this book is the tool you need.

Product Description
At the core of this popular guide is "the program" - a 13-week walk - run plan designed to turn anyone into a runner, without injury. Originally developed by sports medicine physicians and refined through three years of clinics and responses from runners, it explains precisely how the beginner should train every day for the first 13 weeks. Every part of the process is covered, from equipment to staying motivated.
New to this edition are sections on training to run faster and farther, interval and tempo training; maintaining fitness on vacation; training for a half and full marathon; and coming back from injuries. A new chapter focuses on running and the family, including running during pregnancy and after the baby arrives, jogging strollers, children who want to run, and running with the family dog. Also included is the latest on nutrition and running, including low-carb diets and other popular diet trends.

Review of The Ultimate Ride (Paperback)

I would assume that most people who buy this book do so because they're looking to self-train themselves and need some guidance on how to do so. That, at least, is the reason I looked into it. Unfortunately, the Ultimate Ride is inadequate for such a purpose.
Carmichael emphasizes that periodization is the best way to organize your training year. However, he gives you no advice on how to actually do this. He tells you its important, but doesn't get into the hows and whys of it. He gives examples of training months (4 total), but offers no insights on planning subsequent months, or on linking months together coherently. He tells you that you should gradually increase "workout stimulus" in a stairstep fashion, but doesn't describe how to actually do it.
This is the biggest problem with Carmichael's book- he tends to tell you that things are important, but doesn't bother describing how to put them into practice. As a cyclist you already KNOW that these things- training principles, cycling techniques, skills, etc.- are important- that's why you bought the book to begin with! What you need to know is HOW to improve them. This is where Carmichael fails.
I suspect this failure is intentional. The reviewer below who likened the book to an infomercial was spot-on. Carmichael is trying to sell his training program, CTS. The reason this book is so spotty is that he wants you to go out and join his program to get the answers and the training that this book leaves you hungry for. This is pretty shoddy business, if you ask me.
I give it two stars because there is a smattering of helpful information, such as nutritional concerns and some good workouts. But much of the book consists of stuff you already know, or is filled with "Ra-ra-you-can-do-it-you're-the-champion-110-percent!!!" pop sports psychology that you could get from any junior high gym class. Extremely disappointing, can't even recommend it for absolute novices.

Review of Suzanne Somers' Get Skinny on Fabulous Food (Paperback)

This book had a lot of the same information as Suzanne Somer's other book on Somersizing "Eat Great, Lose Weight", however, this book has some updates to the original book as well as many more wonderful recipes.I originally started the Somersizing program after hearing that it could level out hormones.Having had two diseases that related to an imbalance in hormones, the idea that this program could balance out my hormones was the big draw.I did have some weight to lose, but that was not the major incentive for starting this program. After 10 weeks on the program, I never felt better in my life.I'm menopausal, but my hot flashes and night sweats have diminished to almost non-existent.I'm eating well and plenty and have so much energy. Oh, and I've lost 19 pounds to date. Some of my friends also started the program when I told them how well I was doing. All have had good results so far.One friend, who is diabetic, is amazed that her blood levels are the same all day. There are no more drastic spikes.Food combining can be a little tough to understand in the beginning, but once you master it, it is not that difficult to maintain. The main problem is the way that we have been conditioned here in the United States to eat over the years (pizza, white pasta with meat sauce, hamburgers, meat and potatoes and chemically altered foods that sit on the shelf for years). I highly recommend this way of eating to anyone who wants to feel healthy and slim down.

The most useful parts of Dr. Nierenberg's book, for me, were "Hunger is your friend" and "Eating more to eat less."The idea of eating "by the clock" is ingrained in me, but based on the book's "keys," I now make every effort to eat only when I actually feel hungry. And I find that smaller portions satisfy me, too. When I go out to eat, I order from the kid's menu when I can, or my husband and I share meals or I just take it home without feeling I have to finish in the restaurant.Per the book's recommendations, I keep up my exercise routine and I've lost weight! The book's straightforward, clear style makes it easy to understand and easier to implement.

Review of The Low Carb Rule & Recipe Book (Spiral-bound)

You know what they say "you can't judge a book by it's cover" ... but it was the cover that first caught my attention...then the title. I have read so many diet books and none have motivated me like this book. The writting style was easy for me to follow and I especially loved how they supported their concepts with the medical journal notes. The low carb diet may seem extreme but I felt I needed to take extreme measures as everything had failed. I couldn't put the book down and read it in one night. I jumped into the diet program the next morning and I have never looked back. YES...successfully losing 15lbs in just 6 weeks...and more exciting is that I didn't starve, to my surprsing I truly enjoyed the great tasting meals. 5 stars to Chris and Catherine for helping find the way to a permanent full proof fat loss formula. You can be sure I have spread the word to all my friends...I counldn't help it as they all wanted to know my secret.
Cheers!

Review of The Power Principle: Mind-Body-Spirit Approach to Ultimate Weight Loss (Paperback)

This is the first weight loss book that I have read cover to cover.
It is a no-nonsense, common sense approach to weight loss. Most of thebook is encouragement- the rest is diet.

Dr. Sorin treats the whole person in a very kind, gentle and understanding approach. It is refreshing to discover a weight loss book that isn't inspired by a fad diet.

If you're serious about weight loss, I would whole heartedly recommend this book.

Product Description
Written by a board certified physician who specializes in weight loss, the book offers the "Power Principle" as a tool that goes beyond just the physical (body) aspects to tap into the mind and the spirit, empowering the person to take charge of their life, health and weight. Dr. Sergey Sorin says that the ability to lose weight begins from the inside out, so turn on the power in you before attempting to take on any outside challenge, especially overcoming weight loss. This is not only a diet book that recommends a specific meal plan or exercise routine; it's a book that recommends an overhaul of your lifestyle, which includes the way you think, feel and eat. The book empowers you with ways to engage your spirit, reform your mind, as well as reshape your body. In other words, losing weight is not just about your body, it includes every aspect of your being. This is not a book about will power but a book that encourages the POWER OF YOU.

Review of The Professional Pastry Chef: Fundamentals of Baking and Pastry, 4th Edition (Hardcover)

I'm very impressed so far with this book. The author knows his stuff, relays the information in an interesting and informative manner, along with making some difficult recipes easy to understand. If you're serious about baking, this is a steal. You'll learn hundreds of facts about flour, baking, preparation along with a ton of cool recipes. They range from easy to bake up, to needing a lot of prep beforehand.
The book uses grams instead of cups/teaspoons, so you'll need to buy a scale as well if you're planning on diving fully into this great work of art.
