Review of Dana Carpender's Carb Gram Counter: Usable Carbs, Protein, Fat, and Calories - Plus Tips on Eating Low-Carb! (Paperback)

If you are on any type of Lo-carb plan, you've got to get this book. Perfect small size but far more thorough than anything. She has even added the fast food menu items made lo-carb; for example if you order a sandwich at Wendy's and remove the ketchup and bread, how many calories, fat grams and carbs are left...this is fantastic for those of us that still like to know or have an idea on general calories we are consuming. I have the small carb counter that came w/the new Atkins book and that's fine, but this will replace it and stay in my purse. Highly recommend this!

Review of The Low-Carb Barbecue Book: Over 200 Recipes for the Grill and Picnic Table (Paperback)

Dana Carpender has done it again with The Low-Carb Barbecue Book. I really have to say this is the book to have to create delicious, healthy summer foods!
Grilling is of course just about perfect low carb food - it involves fresh fish, fresh chicken, and lots of fresh vegetables. However, there are a few dishes in classic BBQ that are notoriously high carb, like potato salad and baked beans. Dana helps with everything.
There are of course the rubs and marinades, the instructions on grilling and BBQing (and how they differ). There are lots of great spice combos that can be helpful to new cooks, but are second-hand to experienced grillers.
Where the book really shines is in the side dishes and extras. The variety of mock-potato salad are great. There are various slaws and salads, plus a wide array of desserts.
The drinks section is fun but again, what low carb drinker doesn't know about mixing rum and diet coke? Is vodka plus sugar-free lemonade really worth a mention? I'd much rather have had those pages pointed at appetizers or more side dishes.
Still, summertime's parties and picnics will become much easier for low carbers who don't have to worry if something is OK to eat or not. By following the recipes in this book, you're sure to get a delicious dish that is truly low carb and healthy for you.
Highly recommended!

Review of Dana Carpender's Every Calorie Counts Cookbook: 500 Great-Tasting, Sugar-Free, Low-Calorie Recipes that the Whole Family Will Love (Paperback)

I had this pre-ordered here at Amazon but found it this past weekend at a bookstore and it was worth paying the difference and having it rather then waiting for it to ship. I love all of Dana's books, but by far this is my favorite. I wasn't sure what to think because of the title saying every calorie counts instead of "low carb" but it is a low carb cookbook, just better for OWL and maintenance, BUT, most everything in this book is 13g carb per serving and less (a lot between 4-8), even dishes with rice and whole wheat flour. She mixes cauli-rice with wild rice and almond flour (meal) with whole wheat flour to keep carb counts low while giving us those grains we can add back once off induction. This is a book perfrect for low carbers and for those watching carbs and calories alike. But its the recipes that earn it 5 stars. Peachy rice (8g per serving) and tandoor chicken is what I made last night and they were delicious (and everything on my plate was 12g carb total). 3 meals like that keep me under my 40 grams daily cab allowance, and yet I enjoyed real rice last night. I'm so happy to have this book. I know it is about to become the most used cookbook because everything appeals to my taste buds. Dana never disappoints us and this one is no exception. Low carbers, don't be fooled by the title, it is low carb. Maybe not low enough carb for induction, but perfect for the later stages of weight loss.
Thank you Dana!!!! And thank you for thinking of all of us who watch what we eat. Its so nice to have all these options for OWL. More recipes for those of us past induction, almost to goal weight or maintaining is always appreciated, especially for those of us who have had to count calories too. This is something not many low carb cookbook authors address and I'm so glad she did. Keep the cookbooks coming Dana!
Oops, it says 4 stars but I gave it 5! I would give it 10 if I could!

Review of 500 Low-carb Recipes (Paperback)

Even though I have always loved to cook, I lost the desire to do so after starting the low carb lifestyle a little over a year ago. Bland salads and grilled chicken breasts were my staples. I found myself browsing the cookbook section of a book store one day and began flipping through Dana's book - I was hooked. I picked it up and spent 4 hours straight reading everything (I had a long car ride to do so). I spent about two weeks making all sorts of recipes from this book and fell in love with cooking all over again. I still use recipes from this and several of her other books several times a week, but I finally popped back into the creative mood and spend the other days experimenting with my own low carb recipes!! Thanks Dana. (c:

Review of 200 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes: Healthy Dinners That Are Ready When You Are! (Paperback)

Dana Carpender has made a serious study of adapting classic recipes from around the world to work with modern low carb diets. In this latest offering, 200 Low-Carb Slow Cooker Recipes, she proves once again that you don't need refined grains and sugars to enjoy healthful, satisfying food - no matter your culinary traditions or meat of preference. The key is quality ingredients, simply prepared.

Dana Carpender is a believer in keeping it simple and freshly prepared whenever possible.None of the ingredients were hard to find at my supermarket except perhaps the low-carb imitation honey that shows up in a few recipes.Of the dozen or so main dish recipes I tested in 200 LCSCR I can honestly say that seven were big hits with my family, a few were just okay and just one was bad.All of them cooked on time and just as predicted. There were some very satisfying desserts toward the end, with several variations on cheesecakes and custards that turn out splendidly in my slow cooker.Although I do not normally have a use for appetizer recipes, there is even a section for that - which contains an outstanding hot artichoke dip.

I am impressed with the author's diligence in keeping most recipes under 10 grams of net carbs per serving. Dana really does stick to the universal "rules" of low carb dieting; lots of veggies and meats, occasional artificial sweetening, a sprinkling of fruits now and then and a bare representation of grains and sugars-- and only when absolutely necessary for flavor, never as filler. She is good at innovating more nutritious subs for common starchy side dish ingredients; fauxtatoes (cauliflower) and mashed turnips are big players at her low carb table.Eat the 200 LCSCR way and you will probably have better, more varied natural nutrition than ever before in your typical American diet.

The recipes for lc condiments & sauces are a big bonus to those of us who suffer from sticker shock at the supermarket's low carb pricing practices. Readers of her other lc recipe books may find some of these items familiar, but hey, it is convenient to have them all in one place. And as for convenience, well...slow cooking is the essence of convenience to modern time-challenged dieters.

Did I make it sound as if this book is one of the best kept secrets for low carbers?I hope so, because it is.
-Andrea, aka Merribelle.

Review of How I Gave Up My Low-Fat Diet and Lost 40 Pounds (Revised and Expanded Edition) (Paperback)

I am a born sceptic.I also have been obsessed with food for my entire adult life. When I am going to eat, what I am going to eat, where I am going to eat, if there will be enough food left by the time I get to thefront of the line... Not a very nice way to live. This book HAS CHANGEDMY LIFE!So far, everything she has said has been true.Everything thatshe said would happen, has happened. And it's not hard to do at all!Sure, the initial adjustment to serving a meal with no potatoes or bread isa little odd, but you get over it pretty fast.Somehow, this diet justclicked with me.After reading her book, I have at least 6 more reasons toeat this way than just to lose weight. That's not even my focus any more! She explained all the different approaches of all these other authors andshows you how to pick and choose which aspects of which approaches willwork best for you. It's remarkably easy to read, too!
I used this bookalong with Lauri's Lo-Carb Cookbook and the Greg Smithey "EasyToning" tape, and I lost 10 pounds the first week and, I don't know ifmy initial measurement was wrong or what, but I lost and INCH off my waist! I have ordered the rest of Mr. Smithey's "Easy" videos now, anduse Lauri's cookbook everyday.I have not yet found a recipe I or myhusband didn't like.
I hope you find something that works for you.Butfor my money, this was the best that was out there for me.

Review of 500 Low-Carb Recipes: 500 Recipes from Snacks to Dessert, That the Whole Family Will Love (Paperback)

First let me say that I own many, many low-carb cookbooks, and this one is THE best I have ever read! Not only does it offer 500, yes, 500 recipes that are easy, fabulous and low carb, but the introduction and ingredient chapters were SPECTACULAR!The introduction was warm, witty and informative.I typically skim through the beginning chapters and get right to the recipes, but I couldn't put this one down!So many questions that I had were answered in the Low Carb Specialty Foods chapter, not to mention the Polyols chapter and the Where to Find Low-Carb Specialty Products chapter (she doesn't like paying through the nose for this stuff, either)!
The Ingredients You Need to Know About section was the absolute best--necessary and unique information about eggs, fats/oils, flour substitutes (what the heck are guar and xanthan gums, anyway--she answers that, too!), sweeteners (wow, I can have molasses!), vegetables (and I can have carrots, too!), and oh so much more. Her first recipe is addictive enough to eat every day (Heroin Wings)!I wish I could say that I've made all the recipes, but I'm so busy trying out the recipes from the first chapter, I haven't even looked at the other chapters yet, but believe me, I know they'll be outstanding.
This author is down-to-earth, funny and charming.I can relate to her so well. She stresses over and over again to listen to your body and let that be your guide regardless of whether the food is low-carb.This works so well for me.The BEST book you will ever purchase on low-carbing and low-carb recipes.DON'T MISS THIS ONE!
