Review of Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy: The Harvard Medical School Guide to Healthy Eating (Paperback)

Review Summary:You would have a hard time finding someone in a better position to write this book.Dr. Willett is chairman of the Department of Nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, a professor at Harvard Medical School, and he heads some of the most important long-term studies of how nutrition affects health. In this up-to-date book, you will learn what the latest research shows about how eating, alcohol use, exercise and not smoking can help you avoid some diseases and birth defects. The book also explains how to read the latest health headlines and interpret the studies they are based on in the future. The lessons are summarized into a Healthy Eating Pyramid that you will find easy to understand, apply, and remember. The book contains a lot of helpful information about how to shop for more nutritious and healthful foods, and easy-to-follow recipes.I was particularly impressed with the summaries of the data on how weight and eating relate to various diseases. The book's only obvious flaw is that it does not attempt to refine the overall research into subsegment groups like those with different blood types, different genetic tendencies, age levels, and so forth.
Review:Like Sugar Busters! this book takes a serious look at overcoming the tendency for having too many fast-absorbed carbohydrates (whether as baked potatoes or as a soft drink) overload your blood with sugars and depress your metabolism.Unlike the "avoid fat at any cost" diets, this one says to avoid bad fats (especially trans fat and saturated fats) and to use helpful fats (like unsaturated fats that are liquid at room temperature). You are also encouraged to seek out nuts as a source of vegetable protein. There is also a good discussion of the healthiest ways to acquire your protein. The beef v. chicken v. fish discussion is especially helpful. He is skeptical about the need for much in the way of dairy products (I was shocked to realize how much glycemic loading, creating sugar in your blood, is caused by skim milk), but favors vitamin supplements as inexpensive insurance. He shows that calcium supplements may not do as much as you think to avoid fractures.Exercise and not smoking are encouraged.Raw foods and ones that are slow to digest (whole wheat, for example) are encouraged among the fruit and vegatables, in particular.
The pyramid is contrasted to the one that the USDA adopted in 1992, which seems to be almost totally wrong.Apparently, it was developed based on a very limited research base.Since then, much has been learned.
I enjoyed reading about all of the long-term studies being done now to understand the connections among eating, lifestyle, and health. The next 10 years should radically revise the lessons summarized here, as Dr. Willett is quick to point out.The conclusions in this book, for example, are based on individual studies of eating, drinking, exercise and health rather than the long-term studies that he supervises and follows. So even those studies may show new things.
In one part of the book, he discusses the pros and cons of some of the popular diets. Some simply have not been tested for health effects, and he is candid in sharing what is not known as well as what is.
This book will be especially valuable to those who like to get their information from highly credible sources, especially from within the medical community.I think I'll give a copy to my physician, who has been advising me to reduce fats in the wrong way!
Although I don't consider myself very helpful in shopping for or preparing food, I learned a lot from the book about how our family can acquire better building blocks for a healthier diet. After you finish reading this book, think about where else in your life you may be following outdated information. How can you check?A good example is probably related to what you think it costs parents for children to go to graduate school and get a Ph.D.In many schools, all the costs are subsidized, and the students even get a living wage. How does that change your plans for encouraging your children's education?

Review of The DASH Diet for Hypertension (Mass Market Paperback)

Having battled high blood pressure for years, I started reading books about my problem in an effort to do what my doctors hadn't been able to accomplish - control my blood pressure without drugs.I picked up two books, the DASH Diet by Thomas Moore and NO More Heart Disease by Lou Ignarro.I found the dietary recommendations were similar in both books, which made me feel more comfortable. The simple nutritional recommendations made by both Dr. Moore and Dr. Ignarro were easy to add to my daily regimen. What I can tell you is that with the help of these two books I have been able to bring my blood pressure down into almost the "normal" range for the first time in years - without any drugs!

Review of Low-Fat Soul (Paperback)

When I reached my thirties and had to start watching my weight, I despaired that I would have to give up the Southern cooking so dear to my heart. Jonell Nash, in "Low-Fat Soul," proved to me that all goodrecipes from down South do not need to start with the words "Firsttake two tablespoons of bacon grease..." I have prepared almost halfof the recipes in this book and can honestly say that not only are theygood but have now become some of my household's favorites. They range fromsimple to prepare dishes like Daddy's Chicken Spaghetti or SmotheredCabbage to "company" dishes like Baked Stuffed Red Snapper (whichis also easy to prepare but don't tell that to your guests, just let themooh and aah.) In addition to those mentioned above, three of my personalfavorites are the Buffalo Chicken Roll-Ups,the Peanutty Noodles and theCollards with Sun-Dried Tomatoes. Each recipe comes with some comment byMs.Nash and every section begins with helpfuls hints on ways to cut down onfat and calories. This book is for every Southerner (current or expatriate)who wants to eat healthy and keep their weight down.

Review of The Core Balance Diet: 4 Weeks to Boost Your Metabolism and Lose Weight for Good (Hardcover)

The Core Balance Diet is a must-read for women who have, well...gotten off balance (which would include probably 85-95% of American women). And Marcelle (with Genevieve) include six common ways that we have lost our balance: digestive, hormonal, adrenal, neurotransmitter, inflammatory, and detoxification. Which of us has not experienced imbalance in one of those areas, let alone two or three?

Marcelle challenges the woman who thinks she would be too overwhelmed to make some dietary and lifestyle changes: "If you could help your partner to lose weight, or help protect your child's health, by changing what he or she ate for a month, wouldn't you try and do it? Now, aren't you worth that same amount of attention?" And she is only asking you to try her program for a month! After that, she assures you, you'll be free from your food addictions and hooked on your feeling great!

Balance, as you might suppose, also entails eating approximately a 30/30/40 ratio of healthy fats, protein and complex carbs (though not as strict as the Zone Diet). But it includes much, much more than that.

The book begins with an explanation of how imbalances lead to weight gain and aging and provides a layman's easy-to-read explanation of the systems.

Marcelle provides a Core Balance quiz for you to determine which of your systems are weakest. This is followed by a chapter on each system. Each chapter(which is delight to read even if they don't apply to you as much as the others) contains the following: information on the imbalance and how to correct it; sidebars and boxes with interesting tidbits of info; a list of "Marcelle's prescriptions " for that imbalance; diagnostic tests to note the progress of that imbalance; foods to include and foods to avoid; supplements to take; "a day in the life" schedule for the lifestyle changes needed (exercise, when to eat, self- nurturing, etc.); a one-week menu;and frequently asked questions.

There are also 60 pages of recipes. Except for the medical diagnostic tests, this is a complete do-it-yourself book.

True to the Hay House spirit, there is also a chapter on the mind-body connection with the cute title, "Your Issues Are in Your Tissues" which alerts you to negative thinking and self-destructive behavior patterns that can sabotage your health.

I have read hundreds of books on health and nutrition (even wrote one myself!) and I give this book a hearty two thumbs up! I learned lots of interesting tidbits, such as how the liver is taxed on a low-fat diet, how Vitamin D deficiency is linked to obesity, and how not flossing can lead to body-wide inflammation. The only thing Marcelle could do to make it more complete would be to have a chapter on the importance of eating more raw foods since a raw diet taxes the digestive system far less.

This is a diet that can be, with a bit of imagination, used by anyone who has any dietary slant (vegan, vegetarian, raw fooder, etc). For example, if one is raw vegan, substitute raw hemp protein powder in place of meat and don't cook the vegetables.

Product Description

Is your weight gain making you miserable? Have you noticed that you're packing on pounds in unpleasant new places? Or is the scale-and the way you feel about yourself- just stuck, no matter how much you diet and exercise? If you've struggled without success to lose weight and keep it off, there's always a reason, and-surprise!-it probably has little to do with how hard you're trying or how many calories you're counting. Now a pioneering practitioner of women's health care shows why willpower doesn't work in the long run and, finally, gives you a solution that does.

Marcelle Pick, co-founder of Women to Women-one of the first clinics in the country devoted to providing health care for women by women-draws upon decades of experience, her patients' and her own, to solve the mystery of the stubborn weight gain. Explaining the science of the body with uncommon clarity, she describes the complex web of connections-between organs and systems, hormones and other biochemicals-that keep your physiology in balance and your metabolism functioning well. Because when it isn't, your body reacts by packing on protection in the form of pounds that won't budge, an excess that can be so harmful and intractable that Pick has named it "toxic weight." Bringing your body back into Core Balance is the only way to heal your metabolism, soothe your body, and lose the weight for good.

The Core Balance Diet is a breakthrough plan designed to restore your body's equilibrium and return you to a healthy, sustainable weight. With her engaging style, Pick explains six common biochemical imbalances-digestive, hormonal, adrenal, neurotransmitter, inflammation, and detoxification-and helps you determine which is affecting you most. In the first two weeks, she teaches the simple lifestyle changes and smart nutrition choices that will show you how to tune into your body and identify your fundamental obstacles to weight loss. Then Pick guides you through a customized two-week program geared to restoring your Core Balance and shedding those toxic pounds once and for all. Far from depriving yourself on this program, you'll eat-often and well-enjoying delicious recipes made from whole foods that give your body the support it needs to heal. At the same time, you'll start to explore underlying issues and emotional patterns that may be getting in your way, as Pick connects self-care with self-knowledge to show you the way to lasting wellness.

By picking up this book, you're about to toss out the old way of thinking about yourself and your weight. The Core Balance Diet heralds a whole new chapter in weight loss, proving how easy it is to work with your body and the right foods-not against them-to rid yourself of weight and unhealthy habits for good. Within a month, you'll be on your way to a lean, fit, and balanced body that is ready to support you-and look great-for the rest of your life.

Review of American Dietetic Association Guide to Eating Right When You Have Diabetes (Paperback)

This book stands out from others because goes beyond just telling you WHAT to do to manage your diabetes, it also tells you the WHY.By helping you understand the reasoning behind dietary and exercise guidelines, the author gives you the knowledge you need to make intelligent decisions when presented with situations not covered by guidelines alone. She seems to understand that everything isn't always black and white in life, and you have to make choices based on many factors.

I'm newly diagnosed.Since I'm not on any medications (and hope to keep it that way for as long as possible), the two tools I have to manage my diabetes are exercise and diet. This book addresses the diet aspect very well, while touching on the importance of exercise. It's not a scientific text, so it doesn't go into excruciating detail. It's an easy read. She helps you understand how the body works without diabetes, and then explains what happens differently when you have diabetes. You'll come to understand how different foods affect your blood glucose level - and WHY.Which allows you to understand and develop your own meal plan if you don't have access to a nutritionist. If you do, you'll better understand why your nutritionist makes the recommendations she does, and you will have the knowledge to discuss various options with her.

This may not be the first thing you want to read if you've just discovered you need to live in a way that manages your blood glucose levels. There are higher level overview books; educational websites run by the Joslin Center or American Diabetes Association; or better yet, diabetes management programs taught by diabetes educators and nutritionists at most local hospital that will give you a solid foundation.Ask your doctor about local programs if he hasn't recommended it to you already.

With that knowledge under your belt, this is an excellent book to take you down to the next level of detail.

Review of The Ultimate Metabolism Diet: Eat Right for Your Metabolic Type (Paperback)

i generally do not write book reviews because running a household and raising four boys keeps my free time relatively short. so, i am writing my first because this book re-ignited my weight-loss fire that had been a dying ember since the birth of my last child and subsequent weight gain. i have struggled with weight since my teens, and celebrated my one year wedding anniversary with a 100lbgain. i was able to lose some weight, gain some, lose some, and gain some. i read a variety of books ranging from the zone to the old/new atkins to eating right for my blood type and so on. i would try the "lifestyle change" for a week or two, become quickly frustrated about the lack of results, and put the text back on the designated weight-loss shelf. this book was different for me. the meal plans and supplement suggestions i had run into before, but they were never presented in conjunction with detailed information that explained the bioogical processes of MY body. before, i felt as if i was taking a proverbial stab in the dark, whereas the questionaires in each section helped refine what was happening with ME. i don't see this book as a magic cure all that will rid of my weight affliction forever, rather i view is as an invaluable tool, and even more importantly, a first step on my long overdue journey to losing weight, understanding my body, and living a healthy lifestyle. i know i can finally suceed.

Product Description
Atkins, the Zone, the South Beach Diet. Anyone with a serious weight problem has probably tried - and failed - to use one of these diets to lose weight. And it's not their fault. According to weight loss specialist Dr. Scott Rigden, there is no miracle diet that works for everyone because everyone possesses a unique body type and corresponding metabolism.People can be divided into five different metabolic types that have a corresponding plan of specific dietary and lifestyle habits that make weight loss work. In this book, Rigden helps readers determine their metabolic type and then devotes a chapter to each one with dietary, exercise, supplement, and medicine advice complete with glossaries and case studies. He also includes chapters on emotional eating and how to mentally prepare for weight loss. Readers find out why conventional diets don't work and, using the guidelines in this book, jump-start their metabolism and experience safe, permanent weight loss.

Review of The New Glucose Revolution Life Plan: Discover How to Make the Glycemic Index the Foundation for a Lifetime of Healthy Eating (Paperback)

I was very skeptical about this method of blood glucose control, but after a friend tried it and lost five pounds, I thought I'd give it a try.

I shop according to the pantry lists in the book and find that my family's overall food costs have decreased - along with my weight, thanks to the "bigger bodies" meal plan sample. Also, it gives a couple of different nutrient profiles (% cho, % fat, % pro) to choose from. I like the Paleolithic profile (Caveman), personally.

I like most of the recipes in the book and am able to change them a little to suit my tastes while maintaining the nutritional integrity of the dish. The food is not dull or boring. I really like the meal suggestions - they teach me what my meals need to "look" like. The authors even included a meal planner suitable for kids, which is great, since Type II is a hereditary condition.

Best of all, I have been able to reduce my bg levels to a normal range, lose weight and have A LOT of energy to get the execise in that completes my lifestyle goal.

There are couple of recipes that sounded like something I would like, but turned out not very tasty, so I scored the book a "4". Still, I highy recommend this book.
I am a skeptic, turned believer.

Review of The Low-Carb Barbecue Book: Over 200 Recipes for the Grill and Picnic Table (Paperback)

Dana Carpender has done it again with The Low-Carb Barbecue Book. I really have to say this is the book to have to create delicious, healthy summer foods!
Grilling is of course just about perfect low carb food - it involves fresh fish, fresh chicken, and lots of fresh vegetables. However, there are a few dishes in classic BBQ that are notoriously high carb, like potato salad and baked beans. Dana helps with everything.
There are of course the rubs and marinades, the instructions on grilling and BBQing (and how they differ). There are lots of great spice combos that can be helpful to new cooks, but are second-hand to experienced grillers.
Where the book really shines is in the side dishes and extras. The variety of mock-potato salad are great. There are various slaws and salads, plus a wide array of desserts.
The drinks section is fun but again, what low carb drinker doesn't know about mixing rum and diet coke? Is vodka plus sugar-free lemonade really worth a mention? I'd much rather have had those pages pointed at appetizers or more side dishes.
Still, summertime's parties and picnics will become much easier for low carbers who don't have to worry if something is OK to eat or not. By following the recipes in this book, you're sure to get a delicious dish that is truly low carb and healthy for you.
Highly recommended!

Product Description
Everyone is eating low-carb these days, and grilling is an easy way to make your protein-focused meals delicious. The problem is that most marinades and sauces are full of sugar.
Dana Carpender comes to the rescue with over 200 low-carb recipes perfect for backyard picnics and barbecues, from meats and side dishes to cocktails and desserts.
This book also features all-new recipes for condiments, sauces, and marinades that can replace the sugar-laden store-bought varieties and allow the low-carber to enjoy previously forbidden foods.

Review of Ultrametabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss (Paperback)

I respectfully disagree with those reviewers who claim there is nothing new in this book. They must have skipped to the last chapters and simply read the dietary recommendation at the end - and even those are different in both form and function.I have read, and been on, about every diet out there -- atkins, south beach, california, grapefruit - you name it.I have been on the Ultra Metabolism Phase 1 plan for 3 weeks, have lost 7 lbs - never feel hungry at all - but more importantly - I HAVE NEVER FELT BETTER!I didn't even know I felt that bad!

You must read this book from the beginning and then all the way through - taking each of the tests and determining the areas where your body is not functioning properly. I had no idea so many of my symptoms were tied to stress and cortisol release.I have a friend who had no idea she had hormone imballances but identified them and sought a functional medicine physician to correct them - and is ecstatic - and she was a vegetarian before she even read the book.I have another friend whose breast cancer physician had her read this book and go on the diet as part of her treatment! All three of us feel transformed.

I can't recommend this book enough.I was exercising 4 days a week ,hardly eating ANYTHING, and still gaining weight, and now I know WHY and what do to about it.If you will strictly adhere to the phase 1 guidelines ( which will require shopping at your local Whole Foods or natural foods market ), I bet you will lose weight and feel great doing it too.

Review of Dieting For Dummies  (Paperback)

When I bought this book I was a little skeptical whether or not it was worth the money.I have read numerous books on dieting, ect and I never really understood what they were trying to teach, but this one really hit the nail on the head, so to speak.
It shows you how to cut back safely and how not to cut too much and why.It also explains in easy terms why your body works a certain way and how to obtain what you want. For example, it explains how many calories you would need to cut back to lose X amount of weight in X amount of time.It has information on weight groups, the food pyramid, healthy weights and even a section in the back with foods listed and how many calories and fat they contain. So far I have been following the suggestions and have lost just about 40 pounds so I would definately say its worth the money! Its not hard to stick to (believe me, I HATE dieting) and you don't feel hungry all the time.It shows you how to start eating right and how to indulge when you crave. Its definately not a diehard-drop-the-weight-now book in any means.Learning how to eat right and how to eat your favorite foods and how to learn when to say when.I have since learned how to eat better and how your body sends signals when its full, truly full, and when its really hungry and not just craving that piece of cake you were eyeing.LOL...A way to finally lose the weight and how to maintain it is what I was looking for without pills and fad diets, and this is the book.Definately not a book for 'dummies'...

Review of Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars (Hardcover)

One of the things you learn with Dr. Bernstein's book is that excessive eating (even when you don't overeat carbs, but other food types) leads to high sugars, due to the so-called "Chinese Restaurant Effect". Well, if you were to devour this hefty book (like you will, once you get your hands on it) you will not see your blood sugar rise. If you are a diabetic (type I or II), you will find in Dr. Bernstein's book a wealth of information that will answer the questions you've ALWAYS had, and even those that you didn't know you had, about diabetes and how to keep your blood sugars in control.

His approach is very unconventional (coming from a diabetic childhood, being an engineer first and a doctor later in life). But you will be fascinated with the amount of "Eureka!" moments throughout the book. I was unable to put it down from the moment I picked it up, and I am grateful to him for having taken the time to share so much wisdom from his years as a practitioner and from his many, many years as a diabetic and experimenter. His lessons are not easy to follow, but they are the way for those who want to live a long and healthy life with diabetes.

I leave you with a thought. If you knew what you need to do to prolong your life and live it in a healthy manner, in spite of what you've been told about typical lifespans in diabetics and all the ailments we seem to be bound to suffer later in life, wouldn't you do it? I would. And I hope you do too. So I recommend you take the time to read what Dr. Berstein has to say to you.

Review of Diabetes Survival Guide: Understanding the Facts About Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention (Mass Market Paperback)

Five Stars are not enough!! I would like to give it Six Stars!!! An AWESOME Diabetes guide written by Stanley Mirsky, a medical doctor who is a well-known expert in the field, and co-author Joan Rattner Heilman, an experienced medical writer who makes the information so accessible. This is the best all-in-one source of information about this disease that I have read. This book belongs in many homes as a reference guide, for use as a "Diabetes Survival Guide" in homes where the disease is already present, and/or as a hedge against future possibilities.

No doubt about it, Diabetes (my caps for emphasis) is a scourge that is rapidly spreading across the USA and the world, killing and maiming in it's worst stages, and now reaching EPIDEMIC levels of more than 1 Million new cases each year. This disease, according to the author can be silent and insidious in it's early stages, catching many unaware of it's early presence. It has been tied to heart disease and stroke, along with the more well-known worst-case effects such as blindness and amputation. Striking children, teenagers, as well as older people, it has been tied to the rising tide of OBESITY and the SEDENTARY LIFESTYLE that is so prevalent in this age of excessive TV watching and hours of web surfing. If you fit in those categories, take note. Even if you think you don't, educate yourself just to be certain; If not through this book, search the web or other sources.

Finally in plain, very understandable words in 327 pages, the authors give us the most current information on this disease: what it is, how to detect it, the "Types" of diabetes, how to treat it, and very importantly, diet. Finally, 'hard', definitive numbers on the meaning of the results of the home blood glucose test meter results! The information of diet alone is invaluable and the surprising information in the "Diet for Dummies" area may surprise you as much as it did me. There is a list of what CAN and CANNOT ever be eaten. Gensing, marajuana, alcohol following exercise are not recommended for diabetics. This book cites definite life-style and habitual changes for some that will require discipline, more for some than others. Other important topics include the very important topic of exercise, insulin usage, and the other medications to keep it within controllable circumstances. ONE SIMPLE FASTING TEST can alert one to the possibility of diabetes or Pre-diabetes. The book cites the importance of detecting at the EARLY stage of "Pre-diabetes", where the disease can be aggressively attacked and managed or eradicated, and it cannot be over-emphasized!

This is a must-have reference guide that deserves the title "Survival Guide" and should be read by everyone. BUT this is just a guide. If you suspect Diabetes, the importance of seeing a MEDICAL DOCTOR and getting "hands on" treatment and remaining under their individualized care cannot be stressed enough. This book is an educational tool that can alert you to the early warning signs of Diabetes, assist in asking the right questions of a medical specialist if you have it, and guide you along the arc of treatment as a reference. My HIGHEST recommendation. Thank you Dr Mirsky and Ms Heilman! Five HEALTHIER Stars.

Review of The RAVE Diet & Lifestyle - 3rd Edition (Perfect Paperback)

I came to this book in a roundabout way.I saw a DVD by the author offered and well-reviewed at an online movie-rental site and recommended it to a sick family member. She, in turn, visited the author's website--mentioned in themovie--and purchased this book (which came with the DVD "Eating").I have to say, I was suspicious. It sounded like the movie was a bait piece designed lure viewers into making another purchase.

As it turns out, that is not the case at all.Sadly, the diet restrictions presented in this book proved to be too...I don't want to say strict, because that would suggest a harshness that isn't there--so I'll say that it was too undesirable for this family member, so she passed the book on to me.I love it.

The book advocates an uncompromising vegan low fat diet. And by low fat, I mean LOW fat--no refined fats whatsoever, including oils (yes, that includes olive oil). And no dairy. And, of course, no refined foods or meat.Quitting meat was easy for me, as I would often go long periods without eating it; I'd given up meat a couple months before, anyway, to lower my cholesterol.Giving up olive oil (and yogurt and milk in my cereal!) is much harder; I miss cheese and chips the most.

But the author makes the change easier by presenting a compelling argument and effective refutations of common misconceptions about diet--misconceptions that are often deliberately promulgated by the meat and dairy lobby.Anderson's book is copiously documented, citing research from a broad range of scholarly medical journals and books. For instance,he provides compelling evidence to demonstrate that the body's immune system will not function to reverse serious disease until fat consumption is no more than 10% of total calories, but that when this level is reached and maintained, our bodies can and will reverse even serious diseases like cancer and hearth disease. Anderson is a health crusader, yes, but not of the sort like, say, Paul and Patricia Bragg, who make strong claims in their publications but provide no corroborating research. When Anderson makes a remarkable health claim, it is backed up by precise references to current, credible research.

Anderson also provides some recipes.I was skeptical about sauteing in wine or vegetable broth insteadof oil...but I really don't notice much of a difference.I have tried two of the recipes so far (Basmati, Vegetables and Fruit, p. 174, and Curried Mushrooms, Avocados and Rice, p. 182), and both are excellent.

I wonder if this diet can heal a bad tooth.I'm scheduled for a root canal in a few days....

Product Description
This is the Third Edition update to the RAVE Diet & Lifestyle. It has been extensively updated to include more documentation, recipes and sections. This edition does not include the Eating DVD. It describes a diet and lifestyle program that is designed for weight loss as well as the reversal of a wide range of diseases, including heart disease and diabetes, and the prevention of our common cancers. The author explains why Americans cannot lose weight, why modern diets don't work, and shows you how to reach your ideal weight by going back to the old-fashioned foods Americans used to eat, before losing weight was a problem. The book describes the relationship between diet and disease and explains why the standard American diet is responsible for the two largest killers in America today, cardiovascular disease and our common cancers. It also explores the relationship of diet to other diseases and how government policies are promoting diet-related diseases.

It isn't always easy to prepare menus and cook food ahead of time, but if you can do it, then you're on your way to healthier eating.Dr. Sears explains his "diet" better to non-medical people in this book. This isn't a high-protein diet or a no-carbs diet as some of the othercontroversial diets are and some critics claim this to be.It really is ahealthy way to eat.I work for a doctor whose specialty is type 2 diabetesmellitus, and limiting those refined carbohydrates is proven to help thosewith all forms of insulin sensitivity.Limiting refined sugars andincreasing intake of fruits and vegetables, adding the heart-healthy HDLcholesterol via monounsaturated fat, and eating sensible amounts of low-fatprotein will help anyone maintain or lose weight, control blood sugar, andstay healthy with more energy.I lost 20 lbs., with 4 inches reduced frommy stomach, and I didn't even have to exercise.Imagine if I had addedsome walking or other activities!Dr. Sears's suggestions I try toincorporate into my daily life, even those times when I am not as strict asI should be.I would highly recommend this book for anyone struggling witha weight problem or just anyone wanting to be healthier.

Review of The Atkins Essentials: A Two-Week Program to Jump-start Your Low Carb Lifestyle (Mass Market Paperback)

Hello!

The book is simply wonderful.Atkins has been the only diet that has allowed me to stay healthy and energetic while losing many pounds.

While on the diet, amazingly, I felt no hunger. This was a drastic departure from how I felt on other diets.A big factor in any diet is this: is the diet practical enough to maintain compliance for the long term?

My answer was yes.It allows so many delicious foods. It has been the only diet that has truly worked for me.The pounds just start falling off, just like the book says.

Now, to address the review made by "Why follow Dr. Fatkins? The Dead & Obese WeightLoss Guru, May 15, 2004 Reviewer:"wallis25" (USA)."

The idea that Dr. Atkins died of a heart attack is bunk.He died of a HEAD INJURY.The heart attack story is an urban legend. [...]

...and read down further.Upon admission to the hospital, he was a very healthy 195 pounds. His 60 pounds of weight gain while in the hospital was due to his organs shutting down, and him retaining fluids.

Please, in the future, check your assertations with reality and don't waste people's time with rumors.

But I digress. For all of you out there - go Atkins today!:-)

Review of The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted and the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health (Paperback)

T. Colin Campbell has made a career of challenging the conventional wisdom around nutrition, and this book is the culmination of his work. His integrity, brilliance, and unflinching courage shine through every page.

The main point of this book is that most nutritional studies that we hear about in the media are poorly constructed because of what the author terms "scientific reductionism."That is, they attempt to pin down the effects of a single nutrient in isolation from all other aspects of diet and lifestyle.

While this is the "gold standard" for clinical trials in the pharmaceutical world, it just doesn't work when it comes to nutrition. Given that the Western diet is extremely high fat and high protein compared to most of the rest of the world, studies that examine slight variations in this diet (i.e., adding a few grams of fiber or substituting skim milk for full fat milk) are like comparing the mortality rates of people who smoke five packs of cigarettes a day vs. people who smoke only 97 cigarettes a day.

Campbell's research, which he describes in a very accessible and engaging fashion, has two tremendous advantages over the typical nutritional study. First, there is the China Study itself - a massive series of snapshots of the relationship between diet and disease in over 100 villages all over China. The rates of disease differ greatly from region to region, and Campbell and his research partners (including some of the most distinguished scholars and epidemiologists in the world) carefully correlated these differences with the varying diets of the communities.

It's not lazy "survey research" either - the researchers don't rely on their subjects' memory to determine what they ate and drank. The researchers also observed shopping patterns and took blood samples to cross-validate all the data.

The second amazing part of Campbell's research method is his refusal to accept any finding without taking it back to his lab and finding out how exactly it works. In other words, we discover in The China Study not only in what way, but precisely how, the foods we eat can either promote or compromise our health.

The book is part intellectual biography / hero's journey (although Campbell is always wonderfully humble - there's no trace of self-congratulation, just a deep gratitude for what he has experienced), part nutrition guide (the most honest and unflinching one you'll ever read), and part expose. The final section leaves no sacred cow standing, and names names! From the food industry, to the government, to academia, Campbell calmly reports on a coverup of nutritional truth so widespread and insidious that all citizens should be enraged.

I have a PhD in health education and a Masters in Public Health - and I can honestly say that no book has shaken my worldview like this one.Anyone interested in health - their own, or that of their family, friends, or community - must read this book and share it.Campbell has started a revolution. Skip this work at your own peril.

Product Description
Referred to as the "Grand Prix of epidemiology" by The New York Times, this study examines more than 350 variables of health and nutrition with surveys from 6,500 adults in more than 2,500 counties across China and Taiwan, and conclusively demonstrates the link between nutrition and heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. While revealing that proper nutrition can have a dramatic effect on reducing and reversing these ailments as well as curbing obesity, this text calls into question the practices of many of the current dietary programs, such as the Atkins diet, that are widely popular in the West. The politics of nutrition and the impact of special interest groups in the creation and dissemination of public information are also discussed.

Review of Going Against the Grain: How Reducing and Avoiding Grains Can Revitalize Your Health (Paperback)

This is an eye-opening, easy readthat will change the way you think about eating from the first page on. It doesn't scare or overload on science, but rather presents the facts on grains and tells a compelling story about why they're not as good for us as we have been led to believe.
As a person with celiac disease, I have been avoiding gluten-containing grains for some time. It was not until I read this book that I understood why monitoring my intake of other grains (and loading up instead on more veggies) could further benefit my health. Having instituted some of the changes suggested in this book, I now feel I have better blood sugar control and digestion.
I shared this book with many friends and family that have varied health issues and interests. They all found it to be very enlightening - and a true pleasure to read. Every person took at least one piece of new information away from the book that has since influenced their dietary choices (whether it be to eat fruit with cheese to balance the acidity; to choose alternate snacks to rice cakes which are high glycemic; or to choose sweet potatos over white ones for better nutrition and less starch) . The suggested meal plans and recipes are also a great source of inspiration for anyone currently on, or embarking on on grain-free or low grain diet.

Product Description
Diets high in grains can lead to a host of health problems such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease, fatigue, and more. Going Against the Grain outlines the disadvantages and potential dangers of eating various types of grains and provides practical, realistic advice on implementing a plan to cut back or eliminate grains on a daily basis. This book also includes easy-to-follow grain-free recipes and helpful suggestions for dining out.

Review of The RealAge Diet: Make Yourself Younger with What You Eat (Paperback)

The connection between food and health is a strong one. Many diet-obsessed people overly focus on this one element of health though. This book builds from the RealAge research to help you change your eating habits in permanent, healthy ways. The book's weakness is that the recommended solutions require a lot of discipline to get started.
The book's conclusion that these changes will make you physiologically younger may well be a stretch. "To be honest, there's still a lot that scientists don't know about nutrition." That sentence is the most important one in the book. A new diet could be produced every year incorporating the latest research results, and each one would be different. I suspect that this continuing change in perceptions will go on for decades. So I suggest that you not take the results of any one diet book too seriously. Some of the key conclusions of each one will probably be contradicted in the future.
Nevertheless, this book is an attempt to point you toward eating habits that reduce diseases older people get more frequently and extend longevity. On the other hand, this book does not focus on appearance or weight level. Many people who read diet books are more interested in those two areas than longevity. If you are interested in another diet currently, this book probably reviews the other diet and gives you a rating for whether or not that diet will help extend longevity. The book is most positive about Eating Well for Optimum Health and Dean Ornish's Eat More, Weigh Less. The book's advice can be encapsulated as "Eat nutrient rich, calorie poor, and delicious." These foods include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, fish, and the right fats (eaten in moderation early in the meal). If you are familiar with books about nutrition, you won't find any big "'aha's" here. The main news is that eating fish seems to have benefits separate from eating the fats that are in fish. Now, I find that I feel a lot better if I eat fish 2 or 3 times a week. I suspect that listening to your body is often as reliable as the latest evidence.
Like many of the best books about nutrition and Sugarbusters!, this one warns about paying attention to glycemic levels of foods.
I did find its focus on calorie count to be questionable. The weight set-point for people differs a lot, and some people with slow metabolisms may find this approach just another painful way to be overweight. Calories do count, but picking your target is hard to do well. Spending a lot of time measuring calories will reduce consumption. If you have a high metabolism, the effort may well bring weight-loss rewards worth the effort.
The scientific references in the back of the book are impressive, but are not well connected to the text. You would have to do a lot of reading to find out what the research really says. I would like to have seen a closer connection between the footnotes and the text. Both Eating Well for Optimum Health and Live Right 4 Your Type are better in this area.
A clear conflict exists between this book and Live Right 4 Your Type. Both seem to be equally based on scientific research, except that Live Right 4 Your Type attempts to match the advice for your blood type. This book discusses the earlier book, Eat Right 4 Your Type, which does not closely match to research references. Based on my own experiences with both the average and the blood type adjusted approaches, I think the Live Right 4 Your Type method works better for me than the RealAge Diet.
If you have heart disease, you will have to modify some of those diets to reflect that by reducing fat (see Dean Ornish's Reversing Heart Disease).
If you are well read on nutrition, this book will not add much to your knowledge. If you eat poorly and have not read about nutrition, this is a fine book for you.
I would like to commend the section in the book on eating out. There are many good ideas for how to have your food prepared in healthier ways. Even if you know nutrition, you may find the book to be a valuable asset for this reason if you are passive in restaurants.
The book also advises doing a lot of your own cooking. That's not for me. The recipes looked too hard to me to be worth looking into. You may have a different reaction. If you do, enjoy!
After you read this book, you should also think about how much effort it is worth to extend your lifespan. If you spend 10 percent of your waking hours to expand your life by five percent, is that an accomplishment? Depending on how you spend your time, it may or may not be. For example, if you live enough longer than a cure comes along that extends your life by another 10 percent, you're ahead. If you enjoy working on this, you are ahead also. If you have more energy to give to others, you may be ahead also.
Also, you might want to check out Dean Ornish's Love and Survival where he points out that human relationships have more impact on disease and health than diet.
Make food a positive part of your life!

Review of The Maker's Diet (Paperback)

This book changed my life!I always knew there was something missing in my diet.I never felt healthy or energetic.I was a size 26 and over 260 lbs.I couldn't lose weight, on the road to diabetes, thyroid and candida problems.I tried every quick weight loss scheme, from Pritikin, to Metabolic Typing to Adkins.Nothing worked.I'd lose 5-10 lbs and gain 20-40.It's not about just low-carb.Carbs are not our problem.Low Nutrient foods are our problem. Today, six months later, I'm a size 20.

Jordan teaches that we need nutrient dense foods such as kombucha, cod liver oil, coconut, naturally fermented foods, organic meats and vegetables, preferably raw goat butter, goat milk and yogurt, organic lamb and organic chicken stocks, celtic sea salt and living water.I eat beets, palm hearts, artichoke hearts, salmon, kefir, organic raw eggs in smoothies, raw honey, olive oil, palm oil, coconut oil, homemade sauerkraut, sourdough breads. I limit bleached flours, soy food, vegetable, canola, and corn oils, hydrogenated oils and margarine, snack foods, processed foods, artificial sweeteners, TV dinners, store meats that have hormones, pesticides and disease, pork and certain seafoods.
I don't overeat anymore and I'm satisfied.God gave us food to eat and enjoy. When we fight against our own hunger we destroy our relationship to food.I no longer horde food, freak when there's not enough, nor do I eat when I'm sad.
I also take Clear Energy.I went from working in an office and came home ready to collapse, to being a nanny of 5 year old triplet boys.I come home tired, but happy and ready to start my day! I use clenzology. And usually start autumn with a good sinus infection...no sign of one yet!

I think we need to separate the idea that this is a `religious' concept and understand that Jordan is asking us to think about what we put into our mouths. Are we going to accept what we've been told is healthy or are we going to finally question the Standard American Diet?He isn't contradicting himself.Anyone who read the book knows he's saying that sometimes it is necessary to temporarily eliminate certain foods from your diet until the flush is complete. And, regarding the comment about wine, there is an enormous difference between naturally fermented raw drinks and commercial wines. They are pasteurized and highly processed, all the possible nutrients are cooked out. This is the problem with the entire food industry.

Other reviewers suggest many other diet books, however; these books focus on specific concepts and remedies, but not on overall healthy eating.None of them suggest eating all of the foods in Jordan's book including coconut, palm oil and fermented foods which helps correct diabetes, thyroid, cancer, hormonal problems, and digestive problems.I have read many of these books; they completely overlook key nutritive foods.

I met Jordan at a local seminar. He is the picture of health and offers free seminars. He is the least "Commercial" person I have ever known. His products are of the highest quality; made of whole, organic dried fruits, vegetables and seeds and herbs. He isn't peddling a low-grade, laboratory processed, chemical `supplements'.He is personable, kind, without the slightest hint of pretense. And he has feelings.I think twice when reading a review of someone who attacks another human being without having met him personally.

And as far as exercise.I couldn't exercise last year.Every time I got on a tread mill, my blood pressure skyrocketed. Many Americans are in such poor health, that they need to get better first, then consider workout regimens. That's like asking a person who needs open heart surgery to run a marathon. It's impossible. But with health comes the ability to keep on track and exercise and stay in shape. One step at a time!

We need more people like Jordan Rubin to swim upstream, amid a world of nay-sayers, and be a living example of health!

Review of The First Year Type 2 Diabetes: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed (Paperback)

You won't regret getting this book!
Gretchen Becker's "The First Year Type 2 Diabetes" is very well-organized, easy to read, and wonderfully educational. It is organized based on the information you need and the amount of detail you can assimilate -- in other words, first things first, with finer points and expanded details later in the book.
The information she presents includes the most recent research. She discusses the merits and myths of the most popular diets and treatments you will hear about.
I got her book when I was first diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, before talking with a diabetes educator or attending any classes on diabetes. By the time I was formally educated, I had already heard everything from Gretchen's book, and was also able to identify some dated traditional information. She really helped me understand why there isn't a consensus of opinion on the "best" diet for diabetics, and the source of many unfounded and/or unsubstantiated arguments for and against the popular approaches. For example, she discusses the pros and cons of the Food Pyramid (USDA, ADA), low-fat diets (Ornish, etc), exchange diets (ADA, Zone, Weight Watchers, etc), low-carb diets (Atkins, etc).
If you are in the "Your body, your science experiment" camp, she tells you several easy experiments to learn more about your own body processes various foods so you can take control and fine tune your own treatment.

Product Description
If you read only one book after you are diagnosed with diabetes, make it The First Year--Type 2 Diabetes
Gretchen Becker was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1996. Since then she has educated herself on every aspect of this chronic condition--by reading medical and scientific books and journals, talking with doctors, using the Internet to communicate daily with other people who have diabetes, and by listening to her own body. Now, as a "patient-expert," she guides all those newly diagnosed step-by-step through their first year with diabetes. In a unique format, The First Year--Type 2 Diabetes walks you through everything you need to learn and do each day of your first week after diagnosis, each subsequent week of the first month, and each subsequent month of The First Year.

Review of ZonePerfect Cooking Made Easy: Quick, Delicious Meals for Your Healthy Zone Lifestyle (Hardcover)

I bought this book expecting a quick and easy way to prepare delicious and healthy dishes for myself and my family. While it is quick, simple and healthy, the taste of the recipes is just ok.I'm a very good cook and a lot of the recipes turned out bland. After a while I ended up adding extra spices or using different cooking techiniques to make the dishes palatable.

All that being said, this book is a great resource for someone new to the Zone way of cooking and for someone that is either new to cooking or ,as in my mom's case, hates cooking and wants something easy to make.
I loved the fact that the author had suggestions for complementary dishes included in each recipe to help you decide which meat to serve with which vegetable and how to make it a complete Zone meal.No guesswork here!

Also, the first few chapters are devoted to teaching the reader about the Zone and it's health benefits as well as how to come up with an eating plan. There are also sample menus for week.It is a very well thought out book, but I just wish that the recipes were more interesting and that the book included pictures of the dishes. It's a good book to start with though.

Review of New Glucose Revolution Guide to Living Well with PCOS (Paperback)

I think this book is a must-read for any woman with PCOS. I've had PCOS and severe insulin resistance for seventeen years and I felt hopeless about being able to manage it, but this book shows you that small, gradual changes can make a difference. The authors have taught me that losing weight doesn't have to be the main focus, increasing insulin sensitivity is the focus and then everything else follows. They also say that if you exercise but still don't lose weight you are still increasing your insulin sensitivity and therefore reducing symptoms, which I think is a great motivator. The only thing I feel this book misses out is the importance of organic food for health, but apart from that I feel it imparts a sense of optimism and empowerment for PCOS sufferers. I thank the authors from the bottom of my heart.

Review of The 20/30 Fat & Fiber Diet Plan: The Weight-Reducing, Health-Promoting Nutrition System for Life (Harper Resource Book) (Paperback)

Fat people know how awful it is when you want to lose weight, but feel like you don't have enough willpower to diet or excercise. I spent a long time in that condition.
When I came across this book, I decided to tryjust a little bit at a time. I thought I'd try just one day on the programper week, and see how it went. Well! I've never gone back. I have stuckwith it every day since then, which is pretty easy, thanks to the 2"eat whatever you want" meals per week.
The 20/30 eating planis easy, tasty, and even fun for me. I never feel hungry, and there arelots of good foods to eat. My doctor says this is a very healthy way toeat.
It's great news that I have lost weight on this plan. But the betternews is that I love the way I feel, and I actually LIKE eating this way. Somuch so that I plan to continue with the 20/30 plan even after I reach mygoal weight. This is a plan I can happily follow for life.
I am notusually evangelistic about anything to do with diet. But this is a book Iwill buy for all my closest friends, because I want them to be as healthyas I feel right now.
I've even started a discussion/support group forpeople who are new to 20/30 - and if you knew me, you'd realize that doingthis kind of stuff is completely out of character for me. But give me asoapbox, and I'll tell anybody that this plan has made a major differencein my life.
I'm just a regular person, and I have nothing to gain if youbuy this book. But it is the one book I would recommend to _everybody_ Theplan is sensible, the recipes are great, and this works.
Good luck!

Review of World Peace Diet: Eating for Spiritual Health and Social Harmony (Paperback)

This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to grow spiritually, who wants to live a conscious and compassionate life, and who wants to contribute to world peace. I have read many books on the topic of vegetarianism, animal rights and animal welfare, spiritual growth, and peace and nonviolence. This book stands alone in its ability to make the connection between all of these subjects.

Will Tuttle, Ph.D. is a rare combination of extraordinary compassion, scholarly research and education, spiritual commitment and wisdom, intuitive insights, and the courage to challenge a worldview which goes back 10,000 years

In this book, Tuttle explores humanity's relationship with the foods we eat.He points out, very convincingly, that when humans began herding animals, it began to create a consciousness of exploitation which then spread to the control and domination of other humans, as well as animals. So the roots of human's violence to humans are found in the practice of seeing animals as objects to exploit for our own purposes: for food, furs, labor, entertainment, "sport" and experimentation. The use of humans as slaves and the subjugation of women followed the subjugation and enslavement of animals.

One thing that sets this book apart from any of the others that describe the problems associated with a meat-based diet is the focus on the spiritual aspects of our diet. When we take food into our bodies, we are also ingesting the energy contained in this food. Animals that are tortured and filled with terror and agony as they are killed are filled with this very negative energy. When humans eat their flesh, we are also ingesting this fear and anger. This affects us deeply. We cannot live with peace in our hearts as long as we are filling our bodies with the pain and suffering of other beings.

Tuttle helps us to see that none of us have actually chosen a diet based upon meat. Our mothers fed us meat from our infancy. As we got old enough to understand that we were eating animals, we were told that animals were put here for us to eat, so it was okay.We didn't question this, any more than we questioned wearing clothes or taking baths. Thus, we absorbed the acceptance of exploitation of animals so naturally that we didn't know it was happening. And being unconscious, it is hard to recognize the violence that is part of our everyday lives through the eating of animals. Therefore, it is also hard to recognize how insensitive we have become to violence, because we have to protect ourselves from an awareness of the violence we are part of 3 times a day.

This is a very important book for everyone who wants their lives to contribute to more peace in the world, rather than more suffering and violence.

Product Description
Food is our most intimate and telling connection both with the living natural order and with our living cultural heritage. By eating the plants and animals of our earth, we literally incorporate them. It is also through this act of eating that we partake of our culture's values and paradigms at the most primal levels. It is becoming increasingly obvious, however, that the choices we make about our food are leading to environmental degradation, enormous human health problems, and unimaginable cruelty toward our fellow creatures.
Incorporating systems theory, teachings from mythology and religions, and the human sciences, The World Peace Diet presents the outlines of a more empowering understanding of our world, based on a comprehension of the far-reaching implications of our food choices and the worldview those choices reflect and mandate. The author offers a set of universal principles for all people of conscience, from any religious tradition, that they can follow to reconnect with what we are eating, what was required to get it on our plate, and what happens after it leaves our plates.
The World Peace Diet suggests how we as a species might move our consciousness forward so that we can be more free, more intelligent, more loving, and happier in the choices we make.
