Review of Lore of Running - 4th (Paperback)

If you have a top notch personal coach who tends all your needs, you don't need any book to improve your running. If you are like me who have the passion for serious running, enjoy reading and analytical thinking while having a full-time job + other professional activities, this book is a must-have.I got one for me and two as presents to my friends.Using this book as the major reference to coach and heal myself, I qualified for the Boston Marathon at my marathon debut after about one year's training, took 10 minutes off in another year and I am on my way to beat NYC marathon qualification time for guaranteed number.Running programs are everywhere."Individualizing" has become a cliché. Understanding the fundamental mechanisms and principles behind body and training is essential to derive a healthy and effective training program that adapts to the body's response. Lore of Running distinguishes itself from other running books by offering a large volume of solid evidence to support the principles concluded by the author. The readers have the freedom of utilizing these materials, often presented in interesting ways such as stories about famous runners, to make their own conclusions.I feel like having a very pleasant academic discussion with the author who is convincing, but not dictating while reading the book. The background of the author - ultra-marathon athlete, researcher and practicing sports MD is perfect for writing such comprehensive running book.
This book is certainly not a quick recipe. It takes time to digest the material. If you enjoy reading, it is a plus.I have read some section multiple times.Another very good running book that takes much less time to read is Daniels' Running Formula by Jack Daniels that is geared more toward elite runners, but still very helpful for midpack runners like me.

Product Description
Now revised, expanded and updated, Lore of Running gives you incomparable detail on physiology, training, racing, injuries, world-class athletes, and races.
Author Tim Noakes blends the expertise of a physician and research scientist with the passion of a dedicated runner to answer the most pressing questions for those who are serious about the sport:
  • How your body systems respond to training, the effects of different training methods, how to detect and avoid overtraining, and genetic versus trainable potential
  • How to train for the 10K up through ultramarathon with detailed programs from Noakes and several leading running experts
  • How to prevent and treat injuries, increase your strength and flexibility, and use proper nutrition for weight control and maximum performance

You'll also find a candid analysis of supplements and ergogenic effects and training aids. The book includes new interviews with 10 world-class runners who share their secrets to success and longevity in the sport. Features on legendary figures and events in running history provide fascinating insights.
And that's just scratching the surface. Lore of Running is not only the biggest and best running publication on the planet. It's the one book every runner should own.

Review of Turn Off the Fat Genes: The Revolutionary Guide to Losing Weight (Paperback)

This could have been a much shorter book; on dozens of occasions, I found myself thinking, "Oh, come on; skip the theory, and let's cut to the chase! Enough obscure biochemistry already, just tell me what to eat, and we'll be all done!"
Well, OK; I'm impatient. And too much theory is always preferable to too little. The diet recommendations are basically the sound, healthy diet recommendations we've been getting for years: eat whole grains, more fruit, more vegetables, less fat, less sugar, and exercise more. The presentation is unique, in that Dr. Barnard suggests that this diet will somehow 'trick' our genes into making us slim. Well, this diet would make anyone slim, regardless of their genetic structure. Perhaps the book sheds light on why what happens, happens; but the actual recommendations are nothing new. I deducted one point for this reason alone; taking the same, tired old idea and putting a new wrapper on it doesn't make it a new idea. This book is not about do it yourself gene therapy, despite the sexy title; it's a vegetarian diet, and that's it.
One thing that I did like was the included meal planner; Similarly, I also appreciated the many, many recipes that make up the last half of the book. It's nice to start a diet with much of the hard work - the diet planning - already done for you. There's also a sourcing guide, if some of the raw materials prove hard to find. Something that is absent, is a discussion of vitamin and mineral supplements (although Dr. Barnard does mention the importance of B12). Multivitamins are a contentious issue; many feel that 'you can get all the nutrition you need with a knife and fork', while still others feel that concentrated multivitamins are not well absorbed, and tend to pass through the system without providing benefit. Personally, I believe high quality multivitamins are important; but aside from suggesting the consumption of any common, inexpensivemultivitamin, Dr. Barnard makes no suggestions, one way or the other.
Dr. Barnard also does not mention alcohol consumption in his book; nor does he mention artificial sweetener use. However, on websites that he has participated in creating, he warns against alcohol consumption (cancer risk).I guess that, after making the major change to a vegetarian diet, Dr. Barnard felt we might need a drink. He might well be right.
The diet does not include specific portions; indeed, Dr. Barnard suggests that you let hunger be your guide. He does provide a 'rule of thumb' that you should consume 10 calories daily for each pound of your target weight; that is, if you want to wind up at 150 pounds, you should consume 1,500 calories daily. But this is only a guide, not an absolute.Indeed, he warns against eating too little, and suggests that we should eat second helpings if we want them. There's no reason to go hungry on this diet.
The diet is largely a subset of a vegetarian diet in nature, but Dr. Barnard does not present it as such; his presentation seems to be coming entirely from a 'whats best for you' approach, which winds up being essentially a vegetarian diet (minus high fat items, like nuts). The motivation seems to be based purely on health, not ethics. However, it is difficult to determine to what degree his health beliefs have been influenced by his moral stance; Dr. Barnard is a strong supporter of a strict vegetarian diet, which means no consumption of animal flesh or animal products such as eggs, milk, or butter. He is also an outspoken critic of using animals for medical testing purposes.
In reviewing the reviews of his earlier works, people tend to fall into three categories: Those who felt Dr. Barnard was trying to trick them into vegetarianism, and were very angry as a result; those who were confused, because the philosophy of this book runs counter to high protein/low carbo books, such as Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution; and those who had actually tried the diet, and experienced dramatic weight loss.It is worthwhile noting that, while there have been many criticisms of Dr. Barnard, there have been NO reviews in which someone actually followed the diet, and failed to lose weight.Say what you will of it; the diet does appear to deliver the goods, while providing good nutrition from a solid scientific base.
(Yes, it's vegetarian.Get over it.)
While I lack the medical background to either validate or challenge his statements, I can tell you that the actual recommendations are largely in keeping with what you've been getting from everyone from the National Institute of Health to your local physician.(By comparison, high protein/low carbohydrate diets are pretty much universally condemned by government health agencies, universities, local health boards, and both doctors and dietitians around the world.)Whole grain foods, less processed food, less fat, less salt, less sugar, more fruits and vegetables, more exercise... sure it'll work. It's even safe. If you're looking for a sensible, sane, balanced approach to weight loss that is both informative and supportive, you might want to check this book out.
After all, it's gotta be better than eating a hundred grapefruit.

Product Description
Breakthrough genetic research indicates that genes are not just on/off switches for characteristics we can't control (like gender or eye color). Some genes, including those that shape our bodies, actually adapt to outside influences. In Turn Off the Fat Genes, Dr. Neal Barnard draws on this cutting-edge research to create a revolutionary new program to help your body sculpt away excess pounds by activating thin genes and suppressing fat ones. The heart of Dr. Barnard's book is a three-week gene-control program specifically designed to help you identify your gene types by asking questions like:

What's your genetic taste type?
Do you strongly dislike Brussels sprouts? Are some desserts too sweet to eat?
Is black coffee undrinkable?

If you answered yes to all three questions you're a genetic bitter "taster" or
"supertaster" (as opposed to a "nontaster"). On page 24 you'll find out how to work with your genetic taste type.

Is your appetite becoming harder to control?
Have diets made your appetite unpredictable? If so, your hunger-suppressing leptin gene might need a tune-up. (See page 59.)

Do you gain weight more easily than your friends?
Do you have difficulty losing weight no matter what you do? If so, the genes that set your metabolism might need a boost. (See page 71.)

Do you hate exercise?
If so, your genes may have overloaded you with sluggish Type II muscle cells. Learn how to change them on page 100.

Once we understand how the genes that control shape can be influenced, we can enjoy virtually the same effortless weight control as naturally thin people and reveal the healthy, vital body that nature intended us to have.

Review of This Is Your Brain on Joy: A Revolutionary Program for Balancing Mood, Restoring Brain Health, and Nurturing Spiritual Growth (Hardcover)

What does grey matter have to do with peace and joy?

A lot more than most of us realize.

Many of my clients who are deeply religious are both stunned and relieved when they find out that their behavior or mood issues may be physical rather than spiritual problems. So it is with great joy that I want to recommend a new book by dear friend and longtime colleague, Dr. Earl Henslin.Though the book will encourage people of any faith, it is written from a distinctly compassionate Christian viewpoint and may be especially helpful to the dazed and confused sitting in our church pews!

Be ready to have a few of your long-held assumptions challenged, and discover some "ah-ha" insights that will deepen your understanding and widen your compassion. In this breakthrough book, Dr. Earl Henslin reveals how the study of brain imaging turned his practice of psychotherapy upside down - with remarkably positive results. He shares answers to puzzling questions such as:

Why isn't my faith in God enough to erase my blue moods?
Why haven't I been able to conquer my anger? Pray away my fear and worry? Why can't I find freedom from secret obsessions and addictions?

Using my Amen Brain System Checklist and the 5 Basic Mood Areas in the brain,Dr. Henslin reveals what happens to our minds when any of those areas are out of balance. And the fun part?He applies the latest brain research to our everyday lives in an entertaining, enjoyable and informative way.(You don't have to be a neurosurgeon to love this book.)

This Is Your Brain on Joyoffers a wide variety of practical,researched-based ways to nourish and balance your brain, including

*Up-to-date nutritional information
*Exercise as powerful as anti-depressants
*Corrective thinking techniques
*Supplements and/or medical recommendations
*Music, beauty, nature,aromatherapy
*Uplifting movies and books
*Scriptures and prayers to help soothe and nourishspecific areas of the brain
*The healing power of community and charity
...... and more!

Finally, Dr. Henslin,an avid and lifelong student of scripture, includes a mini-study of Paul's letter to the Philippians where the aging apostle unveils his "secrets" to lasting joy.

Read this book and you'll know how exactly how to nourish your mind, balance your brain and help others do the same. After all, the capacity for joy is a terrible thing to waste.

Product Description

A break-through guide to help people experience lasting joy by restoring brain health.

What does the latest research in brain science and brain imaging say about our ability (or inability) to experience joy and happiness? Is our lack of joy a sin problem or a brain problem? In this life-altering book, Dr. Earl Henslin reveals that to enjoy our lives to the fullest, to become more loving, more Christ-like, we need to become more capable of healing and nourishing our brains. Many problems, long thought of as spiritual in nature--anger, depression, mood swings, anxiety, addictions--are often the result of a sick brain that cannot comprehend a good and loving God. This Is Your Brain on Joy shares exciting new findings in neuroscience that are spiritually sound, showing us how to care for our brains so we not only more effectively use them to glorify God but also experience His love.

Review of The Missing (Mass Market Paperback)

The Missing is Sarah Langan's second novel, a follow up to her highly praised 2006 debut, The Keeper, which no less a light than Peter Straub described as combining "a genuinely poetic sensibility with a taste for horror's most bravura excesses."Happily, The Missing (called The Virus in its UK incarnation) shows those same qualities, resulting in a book that's memorable, heartbreaking and disturbing.

The Missing (inspired in part by Langan's personal experiences in New York in the days after the 9/11 attack, when the smells and dust emanating from ground zero permeated the air in the city) is a loose sequel to The Keeper. For instance, a character from that novel appears briefly, and the town of Bedford, where The Keeper was set, is mentioned. The key link between the two novels, however, is the explosion of Clott Paper Mill at the end of The Keeper.

Besides killing several people, the explosion and subsequent fire resulted in the release of deadly Hydrogen Sulfide gas into the air. That element comes to permeate the soil in the woods between Bedford and Corpus Christi, Maine, enabling a virus in the soil there to evolve into something deadly and malevolent, thus setting the stage for the events described in The Missing.

Langan's fictional horror is precipitated by, of all things, a fourth grade field trip, where a student gets lost. After being exposed to the virus, that student becomes a Typhoid Mary of sorts, spreading the virus by attacking and biting members of the local populace.Soon, the majority of the citizens of Corpus Christi are seized by madness, turning into aggressive, flesh-craving crazies, all intent on securing their next meal and spreading the virus to new hosts. They are led by the pregnant teacher, wallflower Lois Larkin, who, while searching for her student, felt compelled to ingest some of the tainted forest dirt.Due to the way she is introduced to the virus, she becomes the hub of the group mind that the virus fosters in its victims, coming to lead the infected against the remaining populace.

The Missing effectively combines small town horror with apocalyptic fiction, calling to mind several books and at least one film exploiting similar themes--King's Cell, Straub's Floating Dragon, and John Shirley's In Darkness Waiting are the novels, 28 Days Later the film--as people try to cope with a rapidly changing, infinitely more deadly world than the one they've become accustomed to. The two novels it consciously or unconsciously evokes most, however, are two classics, David Morrell's The Totem, and Chet Williamson's Ash Wednesday, the first because its posits a chillingly plausible explanation behind the legends of the werewolf, vampire and zombie, the second because, like Williamson, Langan knows that apocalypse is personal, choosing to generate emotional force from the trials and tribulations of a small cast of characters, rather than choosing a larger, global stage. Through thoroughly arresting prose, Langan creates an air of intimacy between her cast and her readers that she exploits to its fullest, demonstrating that small, everyday horrors--a friend's betrayal, a spouse's infidelity, the breakdown of a family unit, and the difficult choices daily life forces on us--can be more devastating to some than the literal end of the world.

Reading this novel should prove reassuring to horror's old(er) guard--although elements of the book will certainly feel familiar, it's not a mere rehash of prior works.Rather, it is a statement that it's perfectly legitimate to revisit what's come before, as long as writers come at the material from a slightly different angle, with a slightly different perspective. The old saw that "there are no new stories, only new ways of telling them" once again holds true, at once a concession to reality and a creative challenge. It's invigorating to see new talent like Langan handling that challenge so deftly.

Review of Cliff Sheats' Lean Bodies: The Revolutionary New Approach to Losing Bodyfat by Increasing Calories (Paperback)

Lean Bodies is one of the best "diet" books that I have read. It is no nonsense and to the point. The author basically has the following message: If you want to lose weight and lose it fast, eat only lean protein, complex carbs and vegies. No sugar, no fat, no white flour. You don't get "cheat days". You either eat right and lose weight, or you don't. The choice is yours, but the information in the book is so complete that you WANT to follow the 7 week plan simply because it makes sense.
This book is absent of pep talks, which I personally found refreshing. It is full of information on how you body processes different food to effectively burn fat. He is not pushing pricy GMC products (unlike his Body For Life cohort) and does not have any cheesy before and after pictures of people who have finished the program. I found this book appealing because it spoke to my intelligence. I want to eat this way because I understand how the food will work for me. Ultimately, my eating habits will change for good thanks to these logical explanations.

Product Description
Details how to lose body fat, gain stamina, and boost energy levels without dieting, offering three seven-week balanced eating programs, sample menus, nearly one hundred recipes, shopping lists, and a list of national restaurants that participate in the Lean Bodies program. Reprint.

Review of Avery's Sports Nutrition Almanac: Your Complete and Up-to-date Guide to Sports Nutrition and Fitness (Paperback)

...It was pretty well buried and anonymous. For these reasons I thought I was probably taking a big chance in buying this book, and that ultimately, I would be disappointed. To the contrary, I have been pleasantly surprised. I still don't get why this isn't a runaway bestseller for athletes, but here's my take on the book. Pros: Extensive information on Carbs, Proteins, Amino Acids, Fats, Water, Vitamins, Minerals, Electolytes, Supplements and even ergogenic Herbs (there is no info on steroids). The strength, I find, in this book is its authoratative tone, and drilling down to reveal esoteric facts. The authoratative tone isn't just evident in the language [the book having been very well edited], but in the knowledge presented. As a strength athlete (bodybuilder) I already know some lesser known facts about nutrition. To have those lesser known facts presented to me in this book makes me trust all the other information in the book that I didn't know. We're not talking about fads or unproven, hyped supplements, but reliable info on which supplements are likely to help, and at what doses. The high-profile supplements are covered (e.g., creatine, ribose, tribulus terrestris, MSM, NADH, HMB, and many, many more), but in a way that is neither pro- nor anti-supplement. You get fair, unbaised opinion on whether the supplement works or not, with case studies cited. There's also an excellent glossary. And there's a very useful website appendix to further your investigations. Lastly, reference sources are cataloged. On the Con side: This is a nit, but there's a section on Who's Who in Sports Nutrition. I disagree with some of the entries, and didn't feel everyone had been covered, but, by nature, this is bound to be subjective; you may find it's just perfect. Also, there's advice sprinkled throughout the book that borders on a recommendation for certain supplements by brand name. I honestly don't think this is because of any tie-ins with the publisher or authors...mostly because they mention numerous and competing brands...but it is a little off-putting at first; at least until you let your guard down and accept it as honest opinion. Anyway, this is a tremendous resource for sports nutrition, and I especially recommend it for my brothers and sisters (there is much on female-specific nutrition) in the iron game. Naturals, in particular, should run...don't walk, to get this book.

Product Description
A complete sourcebook for amateur athletes to keep pace with the ever-changing field of sports nutrition.

Review of Taming the Beast Within (Paperback)

"You are what you eat".I'm sure we're all familiar with that saying.Well, it's what this book is about. MitchWeiss takes us on a journey from our origins to the present, showing that we are the result of natural selection. As such the experiences and behaviors that ensured our survival as a species are coded into our genes and, even more intriguingly, are stored in that vast data base of our subconscious. Not all of the behaviors that ensured our survival were noble. They manifest themselves today in our aggression and in our racism: thus the title 'Taming The Beast Within'.
Perhaps the most speculative premise is the one that suggests that our subconscious may carry recorded memories of the past existence of our ancestors, that 'some of our ancestor's actual conscious memories downloaded into our head by our genetic instructions'.That would explain the feeling of déjà vu that we all experience. Even a talented child prodigy may have inherited the talents of a number of direct ancestors.
A work of such scope and depth as this would be remiss if it ignored religion. And it does not. It challenges our beliefs, our insistence that our God is the true and only one and that our neighbor's is the false one.And of course our neighbor believes the exact same thing.
These are just glimpses into this ambitious work and, in some ways, do it an injustice because you may be tempted to think that this is one of those boring scholarly tomes that you avoid like the plague.Well, it isn't.It's very accessible and very readable. The author's conversational style is engaging and seductive. He can take a thesis of this magnitude, from the atomic structure of matter to the chemistry of the brain, and present it in language that all of us will find interesting and even entertaining.
So what is this book all about. To borrow the author's own words his 'intention is to 'indict' the conventional wisdom and ideologies so that they may stand trial using common sense rules of evidence'.
Let the trial begin.I can't wait !

Product Description
Taming The Beast Within, by M.H. Weiss, is the ultimate self-help book. The logical and believable secrets of successful weight control, great mental and physical health, personal confidence and success become crystal clear as this story of life's reality unfolds.
Surely a controversial book, Taming The Beast Within attacks all aspects of the conventional wisdom and prevalent ideologies without mercy. The Author lays out a superb case for the realistic, spontaneous and natural origin of life through a believable journey from the beginning of our universe until the chaotic time in which we live. The open-minded and curious reader will find this book witty, informative, arrogant, sarcastic and charming, all at the same time.
New facts about many aspects of the origins of life, learned from recent genetic and archaeological discoveries, give real explanations to many of life's mysteries. The reader gets a logical and plausible look into the mechanisms at work behind phenomena like the sixth sense, deja vu, premonitions, hunches, intuition plus an intimate understanding of the real causes of mankind's seemingly animalistic behavior. Taming The Beast Within may well be the most important book you have ever read.

Review of Nutritional Strategies for the Diabetic/Prediabetic Patient (Nutrition and Disease Prevention) (Hardcover)

I just picked up this book at ASPEN Nutrition Week after reading it at the booth for more than 30 minutes. I was choosing between Opara's "Nutrition and Diabetes" and this one, and I felt that Mechanick's book suited my needs more:
It was very easy to look up clinically useful info quickly, but then one could read on about the pathophysiology. Very well-researched and understandable, even for a clinical person like me. I also liked that it did not focus entirely on Diabetes, but also on pre-diabetes and lipid metabolism. Most of the book was written by MDs who practice clinically, which probably explains why it really hits the mark.

The wound-healing chapter by Breit is pretty neat, and it has good pictures showing the different stages and what happens when, and an evidence-based approach to what's out there.
There is a chapter on mitochondria that is surprisingly readable and clarifies a lot of underlying pathophysiology. The chapter on nutrition and hyperglycemia is very much to the point. I'm not going to go through all the chapters here, but there's something for every disease state related to hyperglycemia or insulin resistance and nutrition.

What I liked best was the lipid case study in the back. It really guides you through the decision-making process for the treatment of dyslipidemias.
The book is also very current, so there's all the new data and new concepts about DM and metabolic syndrome in there. I am not sure if it is going to be the "bible" on the topic (that's what the guy in the foreword said), but I found it very useful and quite addictive reading.

If you want a book that has all the current info on metabolic syndrome, diabetes and nutrition, this is probably the best-researched, most readable and most current option.

Product Description
While nutrition is central to the management of diabetes, there is no one “diabetic diet”. Nutritional prescriptions depend on the type of diabetes, food preferences, lifestyle, treatment regimen, comorbidities, state of health, and the route of caloric administration. Nutritional Strategies for the Diabetic/Prediabetic Patient is a comprehensive reference aimed at advancing physicians' knowledge of nutrition in relation to diabetes, allowing them to provide evidence-based recommendations for their diabetic patients. It also provides dietitians and diabetic educators with an in-depth understanding of the pathophysiology and medical treatment of diabetes.

Written by scientists, clinicians, registered dietitians, and certified diabetes educators, this book reviews the molecular mechanisms of disease and drug therapy. It also provides recommendations for management with the level of evidence indicated where appropriate. In areas where little research data is available, the editors present recommendations based on extensive clinical experience. The book places particular focus on the synchronization of nutrient intake with medications, and provides unique clinical management tools, along with details of their ability to be replicated for patient use. To facilitate accessibility, it features evidence-based technical reviews of clinical literature and includes numerous tables and figures, with color photos of wound healing stages.

Addressing all aspects of nutrition in adult diabetic and prediabetic patients, Nutritional Strategies for the Diabetic/Prediabetic Patient is an important referencefor those concerned with the dietary management of this disease.

Review of Ayurvedic Cooking for Westerners: Familiar Western Food Prepared with Ayurvedic Principles (Paperback)

I own this book (ACFW) and The Ayurvedic Cookbook (TAC) and I must say that I rarely open this one, while I use at least 3 recipes out of TAC every week. The problem is that while this book stays true to the principles of Ayurvedia, the recipes aren't as tasty as they could be.This book tends to follow the Western macrobiotic ideals of "steam some rice, steam some veggies, let's eat", where TAC uses a wide array of spices.Comparing side by side similiar recipes, TAC's carrots and parsnips has about a half dozen spices, while ACFW's carrots, parsnips and peas has none.Which do you want to eat? This comparison is valid for many other recipes as well, which is somewhat disturbing given the importance TAC places on spices as a part of Ayurvedia. This book seems aimed at the more political/masochistic Western vegetarian (there is a sidebar on being nice to meat-eaters) who sees bland food as some kind of right of passage. While there's good information on Ayurvedia, you can do better with The Ayurvedic Cookbook.

Amadea Morningstar, co-author of the bestselling Ayurvedic Cookbook, receivedmany requests for Western recipes that utilized Ayurvedic principles.Well, here it is!This is a "one of a kind" book that is sure to be a strongbestseller and represents a dramatic enhancement for people who want to practice Ayurvedic health practices in the West.

Review of Move Yourself: The Cooper Clinic Medical Director's Guide to All the Healing Benefits of Exercise (Even a Little!) (Hardcover)

I consider myself fairly active and reasonably smart when it comes to nutrition - however, after reading this book, I was surprised by how much I still had to learn. If you weren't actively exercising and eating healthy before, this book will definitely convince you that it is in your own best interest to start doing so immediately!

The authors use their research to describe the undeniable benefits of fitness, even at the most basic levels and offer lots of simple tips for becoming more fit. This book isn't about training for a marathon; it is about incorporating even the smallest amounts of exercise into your life on a daily basis. One of the easiest things I did was to buy a very inexpensive pedometer and see how "sedentary" I actually was...Honestly, my results were shocking.I want to be a healthy example to my children and this book gives me the tools to do just that.

The book concludes with some nutrition information and sample menus.I can't believe how much more energy I have and how much better I feel following some of the authors' simple guidelines.

The focus is on fitness. And according to the authors and their extensive research, being fit helps prevent diabetes, heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, depression - and improves memory, energy, digestion - and most importantly (at least to me!), improves quality of life.

This book is motivating, practical and incredibly easy to read.

Review of The Park Avenue Nutritionist's Plan: The No-Fail Prescription for Energy, Vitality & Weight Loss (Paperback)

I'm a huge fan of Dr. Jana Klauer! I loved her first book, "How the Rich Get Thin," and I equally love the second. Of course, not all the advice in the second book is new, but it's highly inspiring (and entertaining)! We all know that, to lose weight and keep it off, we have to eat less and move more. Any diet book will tell you that. But Dr. Klauer's client stories and strategies offer motivation, the most important ingredient for weight loss! I'm glad she emphasizes her nutrition shakes. I've been drinking her shakes for about a year now, and I've also been recommending them to all my fitness clients (I'm a personal trainer specializing in weight loss). It's DIFFICULT to lose weight, but Dr. Klauer's shakes have helped at least 80 percent of my clientle lose weight. That's a HUGE success, given 95% of diets result in failure.

Review of Surviving Type II Diabetes (In Spite of the Experts' Advice) (Paperback)

I have had occasion to read "Surviving Type II Diabetes" several times and have tested its "suggestions" on myself. It has worked for me. It has also opened the eyes of my primary care physician who now sees that more understanding is required before drugs are employed. I highly recommend the book.

Product Description
Type II diabetes is one of the fastest growing epidemics in America! Once called "adult onset diabetes" it's now showing up in school-aged children. As a type II diabetic, if you don't know the huge differences between type I and type II diabetes, you could be using strategies that can make your problem worse instead of better! Unfortunately, many healthcare professionals aren't yet aware of the importance of these differences and, consequently, give harmful, if well intentioned advice. In this timely text, learn: - what those differences are, - how to control cholesterol without drugs, - the roles of carbohydrates, fats, protein and fiber, - a secret weapon to create more energy and lower blood sugar, - how to avoid harmful aspects of the food pyramid, - how to test your own body and interpret the numbers, - how to sleep better, - how to stay in control while you're traveling, - what to buy at the health food store - and how to make fantastic, diabetic-friendly desserts. Learn how to master your life with type II diabetes, minimize or eliminate the need for diabetic drugs, and reduce your dependence on the advice of "experts." After reading this book, you should understand more about managing it than many healthcare professionals.

Review of Runaway Eating: The 8-Point Plan to Conquer Adult Food and Weight Obsessions (Paperback)

If I didn't know better, I would think that the authors of this book had hidden cameras in my pantry (and in my subconscious). In just the first few pages, they perfectly described my over-eating episodes as if they'd been there with me while I devoured an entire bag of chocolate chips. And in the subsequent chapters they revealed the lies I've been telling myself in the back of my mind, helping me get honest with myself about my distorted view of my body, my eating, and how to find happiness.Although the book is clearly aimed at women in their mid-life (one of the 8 points in the plan is specific to menepause), I found most of the book applicable to me as a 30yo man who has fluctuated between over-eating and restricting my whole life.I feel like, for the first time in my life, a veil has been lifted that has revealed all the ridiculous lies I've been telling myself that keep me unhappy.I'm just starting out, trying to regain my ability to know when I'm really hungry (not tired, angry, bored, or depressed), and when I'm full (rather than eating until I'm sick).I already find I'm eating more than I convinced myself I should eat (though surely less than I was eating, since I'm not gorging on cookies anymore).I also have more energy and find myself able to deal with work and home with a smile, rather than succumbing to tension. If you've ever told yourself that your happiness is dependant on losing a few more pounds, or you've ever started eating a cake by taking a small slice, then rationalized another small slice, then another, and another and another, until the cake is nearly gone -- this book will be a kind, gentle wake-up call and help you take rational steps toward a healthy relationship with food.

Product Description
The first book to address a disturbing new trend: dangerous eating patterns in midlife women that can have serious health consequences.
Struggling to cope with the stress of menopause, empty nest syndrome, caring for ailing parents, work overload, and the cultural emphasis on youth and beauty, more and more women find themselves eating compulsively to ease tension, manage anxiety, quell depression, and distract themselves from what's really eating them. Others obsessively follow strict diets or exercise excessively.
In this groundbreaking book, clinical psychologist Cynthia M. Bulik, Ph.D., and dietitian Nadine Taylor team up to present a patient-tested 8-step program to help women regain a healthy relationship with food. Readers also will find:
o A thorough explanation of the full spectrum of Runaway Eating behaviors, from occasional lapses into binge eating to restrictive dieting to compulsive exercising
o Alternative ways to alleviate anxiety and defuse depression
o Practical strategies for managing the menopausal symptoms that often lead to disordered eating

Review of Sugar Busters! for Kids (Hardcover)

This book will be most appealing to adults who have had success with the Sugar Busters! approach to weight control through reducing the amount of high glycemic foods (ones that raiseinsulin levels and thus slow down the metabolism) that they eat. Now, you will know how to integrate this approach for the whole family!
If you have not yet discovered the Sugar Busters! approach, it is well worth your time.As the authors (three M.D.'s and a former Fortune 500 CEO) point out, many diseases are related to overweight and obesity (such as Type 2 diabetes which is caused by insulin resistance, and cardiovascular diseases). Two terrible things are happening now.First, childhood overweight and obesity are growing rapidly as a percentage of the population around the world.Second, what were once adult diseases related to overweight and obesity are showing up in children. The authors point out that these trends are closely associated with the rise in the use of refined sugar. These trends run in families, suggesting both genetic (homone related) and environmental causes.
As to changing, the book is filled with directions for how to shop, menus (along with acceptable substitutes), and recipes (on the spicy side to appeal to the adults too). You can also use the recipes in any of the other Sugar Busters! series books. The recipes are almost all simple to prepare. Most include ingredients available at most food stores. There also seemed to be an attempt to keep the cost reasonable.I do think that households with younger kids will probably use fewer seasonings (but remember that no-sugar ketchup!).
There is a separate section with rhymes for kids at the back, which illustrates some of the key concepts. You can use this like a standard children's book for those in the 3-6 age range. My only criticism about the back is that the letter to kids uses gasoline for a car as the analogy to the need to eat better.Prior to the age of driving, I doubt if that analogy will work
One of the best parts of the book is that it keeps it as simple as possible. The authors also emphasize making better choices rather than treating this like a diet. They also point out that there are few long-term studies of the effects of diet on youngsters, but they have used the few that are available. For example, a low glycemic breakfast reduces what youngsters eat in calories for lunch. They also discuss how to introduce new foods (assume it will take at least 10 efforts before acceptance occurs, so be patient and persistent!).The menus are adjusted separately for the 6-8 and 9-12 year old groups.Over 12, they can use the adult Sugar Busters!

Review of Healing Anxiety and Depression (Paperback)

Many books are one-sided arguments for the causes of depression and anxiety. According to these biased books, depressions stems from:
Past child abuse and other negative environment factors
Holding your body in a depressing way - bent down, frowning, etc.
Medical causes
Poor diet, lack of exercise
Isolation
Fill in the blank
But this book is different.
Healing Anxiety and Depression is a refreshing book, for it takes all of the above factors and mixes it into a complete approach to the causes and treatment of anxiety and depression.
Moreover, Daniel Amen, M.D. and his co-author, Lisa C. Routh, M.D. have pioneered the use of a brain imaging technology known as SPECT: Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography. This interesting brain scanning method is different than other methods because it allows one to see how certain parts of the brain interact to cause these debilitating conditions. Other
methods of brain imaging only give a surface view of the brain - which is of very little use for psychiatry.
The authors also touch upon how these areas of the brain cause insomnia, suicide and violence as well. They also point out the different causes of anxiety and depression between the genders. They convincingly describe gender differences from social, psychological, and biological perspectives.
In short: they give you the full picture on depression from every possible angle - literally. In between the pages, interspersed among case histories, personal stories, and scientific explanations, you will find actual pictures of the five areas of the brain they have focused on via SPECT technology:
1.)Basal Ganglia
2.)Deep Limbic System
3.)Anterior Cingulate Gyrus
4.)Temporal Lobes
5.)Prefrontal Cortex
Furthermore, the authors have taken these five areas of the brain, and through thousands of their own patients, compiled their findings on how these five areas interact to cause seven variations of depression and anxiety:
1.)Pure Anxiety
2.)Pure Depression
3.)Mixed Anxiety and Depression
4.)Overfocused Anxiety/Depression
5.)Cyclic Anxiety/Depression
6.)Angry Anxiety/Depression
7.)Unfocused Anxiety/Depression
There's only one drawback to this book: the technical terms can be a bit annoying. I constantly flipped back to beginning chapters to refresh my memory on what they were talking about. The medications and dosages - and their variations, are mind-boggling. Ask your doctor about them.
Despite this, the book is worth the extra memory and concentration required to comprehend it.
It's very empowering too: Dr. Amen is a strong advocate for natural supplements, exercise, and deep diaphragmatic breathing. He also gives the reader a simple, flexible, easy-to-follow diet that'll maximize your brain function. More wisely, however, he directs you towards a way of eating that's based not on a one-size-fits-all mentality, but a diet that is focused on your
particular type of anxiety and/or depression.
He also has his own version of cognitive therapy: ANTS (Automatic Negative Thoughts) and ANTeaters, developed by Amen as a child psychiatrist to help make the ideas a bit more concrete for children. Amen's short chapter on the power of thoughts can help you take more responsibility for your own
thinking.
Closing with "32 Strategies to Overcome Anxiety and Depression," along with a chart summarizing "diagnostic and treatment principles," this book will give you the real knowledge you need to manage your life on a whole new level.

Product Description
Dr. Daniel Amen-a pioneer in uncovering the connections between the brain and behavior-presents his revolutionary approach to treating anxiety and depressive disorders. Healing Anxiety and Depression reveals the major anxiety and depression centers of the brain, offers guidelines and diagnostic tools to determine the specific type of anxiety and depression, and provides a comprehensive program for treating each type. Based on new brain science-and featuring treatment plans that include medication, diet, supplements, exercise, and social and therapeutic support-this groundbreaking book will help readers conquer these potentially devastating disorders and change the way they think about anxiety and depression.

Review of Peak Performance: Training and Nutritional Strategies for Sport (Paperback)

There are so many good points about this book I hardly know where to start. What impresses me most is that the authors have maintained a balanced and rational view on the many diverse and sometimes conflictinginputs - lab. tests, experience in the sport, folklore, practicalities -all of these impinge on the attitudes of athlete and coach, and can resultin a lot of confusion and uncertainty. The book does an excellent job inunravelling these tangled strands of knowledge and half-knowledge topresent the a clear and accurate picture to the reader. Uncertain pointsare made clearer, several myths are debunked (some of my own misconceptionswere cleared up). Yet where the truth remains hidden or is unclear this iscommented upon. Concerning scientific studies the source material isextensive and up to date.
The layout and language are so clear andreader-friendly, and the material so interesting that I found it hard toput the book down. However, I'd have to advise readers not to try to takein too much at a time.
The few inaccuracies in some of the detailsdidn't detract from the message or the overall quality. There is oneslightly surprising omission, namely the absence of any discussion of theConconi test for aerobic performance. Nevertheless, the sections ontraining are excellent; the ones on nutrition are even better.

Product Description
This is a text for coaches and athletes who want to improve their sporting performance via the application of scientific training and nutritional principles. It gives detailed, practical information on the principles of physical conditioning, and how these relate to explosive events (such as sprinting), endurance events (such as the Ironman triathlon) and team sports (such as rugby and soccer). A chapter on competition preparation has been included ("Getting it right on the day"), as well as an appraisal of scientific aids for athletes (heart rate monitors, altitude training, warm up and warm down, drafting and pacing, and hill training). The book includes contributions from leading coaches, who reveal the secrets to success in their events, and also look at what the future holds for athletes in the year 2008.

Review of Handbook of Nutrition and the Kidney (Paperback)

This highly technical medical text provides an outstanding explanation of the nutritional needs of patients with renal disease. The chapter on calcium and phosphorus homeostasis is particularly well written.Because the writers assume the reader has a fundamental understanding of physiology and pathology of the kidney, this book is has limited usefulness for the casual reader. It is most valuable for medical professionals treating patients with renal disease or the medical student who hopes to get maximum benefit from a nephrology rotation.

Product Description
Thoroughly revised and updated for its Sixth Edition, this handbook is a practical, easily accessible guide to nutritional management of patients with acute and chronic renal diseases. Leading international experts present state-of-the-art information on these patients' nutritional requirements and offer dietary recommendations, with menus and lists of supplements to enhance patient compliance. I loved this book! Eat by Choice, Not by Habit offers the reader the opportunity to gently look at the relationship we have with ourselves, in particular, with our food choices.

The author wants to inspire each of us to take responsibility for our lives and become more conscious of what we are doing, and how we are meeting our needs.I agree with Ms. Haskvitz that we have the wisdom within to make healthy choices, and her book gives us permission to further access this inner voice, while giving us some practical knowledge and skills.

Review of Longevity in Action (Paperback)

After working for over 45 years and wondering how to manage my senior years, I read Mr Bull's book "Longevity in Action" with great interest. He did not let me down. His "been there, done that" approach to senior fitness is very motivating. Great reading for all ages.

Product Description
Although the life expectancy of Americans was rising, an alarming number of the author's family members, boyhood chums, and military buddies were passing away . . . years too soon! Then came the shattering blow when his dear wife, Alice, mother of their seven children, nearly succumbed to cancer at 59! It was then that Arnold Bull, an admittedly burned-out, chain-smoking "couch potato" took his life in another direction at the age of 62. He plunged headlong into research in preventive medicine, which led to the study of nutrition and physical fitness, eventually leading to his acquiring the title of America's Oldest Certified Aerobics Instructor.
This informative, lighthearted book, based largely on Arnold's motivational lecture series, is an inspiration to not only senior citizens, but to their offspring-the millions of Baby Boomers tentatively entering their 40s and 50s.

Review of It Must Be My Metabolism (Paperback)

I found this book incredibly helpful for I finally understand why the fad diets just don't work. This book is not just another diet book nor is it a weight loss book; so don't expect to find weight loss tricks here and there. I have used this book as part of the program offered at the Doctor's center in Connecticut. For the first time in my life I am losing weight while I am eating plenty of healthy foods. I feel satisfied, calm, and much happier, plus I am exercising and enjoying it too! I feel great and have more energy than ever. The best part is that my health has dramatically improved. Finally, I am learning that it is not about dieting as much as it is about my lifestyle that needs to change to maintain good health.

I personally found the discussion of how stress and fad dieting can cause weight gain very insightful. The book also has excellent and easy to read chapters on metabolic syndrome, a pre-diabetes state that causes heart disease and full blown diabetes if not reversed. The recipes, meal plan and the six-month clinical program in part II of the book are the same as the plan I have followed at Dr. Yavari's center. I recommend this great book to anyone who is tired of fad diets and is interested in living a healthy lifestyle while preventing diabetes

Review of Bursting With Energy: The Breakthrough Method to Renew Youthful Energy and Restore Health (Paperback)

This book takes scientific basics of nutrition and physiology and transcribe them into everyday language. The explanations for why things are the way they are with losing weight are very helpful and provide a moderate level of knowledge, but enough to allow the reader to make informed personal decisions.I especially liked the position the author took of making small changes while building to a bigger goal.We all know of failure from trying to "bite off more than we could chew." Great book!Wonderful lessons!

Product Description
In this updated revision of his acclaimed book, "Bursting with Energy" Dr. Frank Shallenberger makes a clear connection between the amount of energy you have and the amount of aging you do, pointing out that, in medical terms, aging refers to a loss of function, not chronology. A thirty-year old with no loss of function is identical to a twenty-year-old, he says. And the same is true for fully functional people in their sixties-they are the same as thirty-year-olds. According to Shallenberger, the loss of functions that result from aging are themselves the result of energy loss: more energy, less aging; less energy, more aging. When Dr. Shallenberger discusses anti-aging methods, he is actually taling about improving energy production. His work with patients over the years has proven that an energy deficit is the root cause of every disease and sympton, from cancer, to fatigue, to obesity. Dr. Shallenberger believes that knowledge is power. Energy is the key, he says. As you learn to eliminate the bad habits that can seriously impair the production of energy and come o embrace the proven benefits outline in this book, you will discover firsthand the power of having maximum energy. Although you do grow older chronologically, you don't have to keep pace biologically. "Bursting with Energy" is all about feeling younger as you get older.
