Review of The Park Avenue Nutritionist's Plan: The No-Fail Prescription for Energy, Vitality & Weight Loss (Paperback)

I'm a huge fan of Dr. Jana Klauer! I loved her first book, "How the Rich Get Thin," and I equally love the second. Of course, not all the advice in the second book is new, but it's highly inspiring (and entertaining)! We all know that, to lose weight and keep it off, we have to eat less and move more. Any diet book will tell you that. But Dr. Klauer's client stories and strategies offer motivation, the most important ingredient for weight loss! I'm glad she emphasizes her nutrition shakes. I've been drinking her shakes for about a year now, and I've also been recommending them to all my fitness clients (I'm a personal trainer specializing in weight loss). It's DIFFICULT to lose weight, but Dr. Klauer's shakes have helped at least 80 percent of my clientle lose weight. That's a HUGE success, given 95% of diets result in failure.

Review of Breaking the Food Seduction: The Hidden Reasons Behind Food Cravings---And 7 Steps to End Them Naturally (Paperback)

The goal of Dr. Barnard is to steer everyone toward a vegan diet.If that is not your intention, best not to pick up this book. The changes are far-reaching, and radically different than the SAD (Standard American Diet).

I tried being a lacto-ovo vegetarian off and on throughout my life. The thought of giving up cheese was just too much to imagine.Additionally, having a husband whose first words about a meal were "where's the meat" made vegetarian life difficult. But if you experience a health crisis (cancer, high cholesterol, high blood pressure) it is amazing how quickly you can moderate your behavior.

My husband and I have been vegan for approximately 5 weeks now.We have never felt better in our lives. If you are holding on to meat, cheese and milk but don't feel good, this book will improve your health.Dr. Barnard also explains why it is so difficult to give up sugar, chocolate, cheese and meat.Apparently these items contain various addicting compounds. If someone had tried to tell me this 6 months ago I would have thought they were crazy. Now that I have adopted a vegan lifestyle I can say that my health has improved so much is such a short period of time that it is almost miraculous. Also, it is important to note that after 2 weeks my cravings for sugar, chocolate, cheese and meat are all but gone.

In the last 5 weeks my husband and I have seen dramatic improvements in our health. We have both each lost 12 pounds without being hungry or exercising more.My husband has decreased his total cholesterol from 177 to 113 (this happened in 24 days). He has been taken off this high blood pressure medication.I have not had a sinus headache in 5 weeks.Prior to becoming a vegan I had chronic sinusitis. My skin has a youthful glow (amazing for 43 year old woman).I also sleep better at night, and wake up more well rested.

If you don't feel as good as you did in your 20's and are willing to make a radical lifestyle change, I believe that this book will improve your health.I have also reviewed other books that advocate a vegan lifestyle if you are interested.Check out "Eat to Live" and "Stop the Inflammation Now".

I highly recommend this book for anyone that wants to improve their health.Try it for a month; what do you have to lose?It is a small investment in time and money that could result in a dramatic improvement in the quality of your life.

Update:4 August 2006

My husband and I are still following a mostly vegan (95%) lifestyle. It is amazing how simple it is once you decide it is just the way that you are going to live.We both continue to feel fabulous. My husband, at 52, is back to the weight he was when he graduated high school. He is even considering beginning to exercise. We have both lost over 20 pounds in a little under 4 months.I continue to highly recommend this book if you are looking to make a lifestyle change for health reasons.

Review of Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works (Paperback)

I really have to disagree with Yvonne's comment "But obese people do not start being overweight due to dieting!"As a child I always enjoyed eating, but Iwas not overweight. In fact, I didn't think too much about food at all.I went on my first diet at age 15, with the goal of losing 5 lbs. After I lost5 lbs by eating alot of salad and little else, I could fit into all my jeans and a fewpeoplecommented on how good I looked.Iwas hooked.....Ilost another 5 lbs. and looked great (probably too thin, but I thought Ilookedgreat!), but the constant restricting and hunger made me start to obsess about food!I would end a 2 day fast by eating an entire bag of cookies....Myfirst diet was the beginning of a 20 year cycle of fasting and compulsive eating that left me 75 lbs overweight.I've been in lots of Compulsive Eating support groups over the years and I've heard the same story. If you put a child ina room filled with candy and junk food and tell her to eat whatever she wants, thefood will quickly lose much of it's appeal......or tell her nottoeat one bite and see how importantthatfood becomes....

This book addresses many of the issues behind compulsive eating, and with lots of work on my part,it made me sane again (and 60lbs lighter).

Review of Eating Between the Lines: The Supermarket Shopper's Guide to the Truth Behind Food Labels (Paperback)

This book cuts through all the hogwash and gets straight to the truth. When there is so much confusing and conflicting information in the media a good
reference guide on food labeling and healthfulness is essential to make appropriate choices. And this book is a great reference guide.

It's also an enjoyable read, with heart warming family stories mingled throughout.

Product Description
So many labels, so little time-just tell me what to buy!
If you-like millions of other Americans-still don't know how to read food labels and are frustrated by the hundreds of nutrition and health claims as well as statements like free-range and grassfed, it's time to learn what you're really putting into your body...find out how to select the most healthy foods at the supermarket and still get dinner on the table by 6:00 pm with EATING BETWEEN THE LINES

Shopping is no longer as simple as deciding what's for dinner. Food labels like "organic," "natural," "low carb," and "fat free!" scream out at you from every aisle at the supermarket. Some claims are certified by authoritative groups such as the FDA and USDA, but much of our country's nutrition information is simply a marketing ploy. If you want to know what food labels really mean-and what they could mean to your health-EATING BETWEEN THE LINES will explain why:

--Chickens labeled "free range" may never actually see daylight
--Organic seafood may be a misnomer.
--The words "hormone-free" on pork, eggs and poultry is meaningless
--"Low fat" cookies and "heart-healthy" cereals may contain heart damaging trans-fatty acids
...and more. Organized by supermarket section, from the vegetable aisle to the dairy case, EATING BETWEEN THE LINES also features more than seventy actual food labels and detachable shopping lists for your convenience-and to help bring the best food to the table for you and your family.

Review of The Vegetarian Handbook: Eating Right for Total Health (Paperback)

I also bought this book shortly before becoming a vegetarian and found it to be a wonderful resource. It goes into a great amount of detail regarding nutrition, dispelling many commonly held beliefs about protein requirements and what is healthy.(No, vegatarians are not starving to death from lack of protein and just too stupid to know it, but they do have a 47% lower risk of heart attack!)
This book is very well research and has a huge bibligraphy section for those wanting to learn more.It details the scientific, social, political, and relgiious reasons that different vegetarians have for their lifestyle. My only complaint with this book is that the recipes inside are vegan, not vegetarian (no milk, cheese, eggs, etc.)But, vegan or not, they are delicious!

Product Description
Many patients that I see in my medical nutrition practice request specific detailed information in order to move toward a vegetarian lifestyle. Here is a book that will guide them along such a path.It will also assist current vegetarians to reach a new level of understanding by offering specific instruction for improving food habits. The instruction includes the most up-to-date and scientific data regarding food protein.By using the egg as a model of the near perfect protein source and comparing vegetarian foods with the egg, we now have available tools for increasing the benefits of protein from non-meat sources.

"Patients with certain medical problems should consider removing red meat and other animal proteins from their diet and moving toward vegetarian food sources. Some of these medical problems include the following: hypoglycemia, obesity, digestive disorders including diverticultitis and other colon problems, gout, and elevated cholestrol. Many specfic studies have shown that the vegetarian diet may help with these problems. This book presents a clear and sophisticated road map for becoming a vegetarian or moving in this direction." --Dr Martin Feldman

Review of Ending Aging: The Rejuvenation Breakthroughs That Could Reverse Human Aging in Our Lifetime (Paperback)

This book might be a steep read for most lay-people who aren't all that interested in cell biology or molecular chemistry, even as a passing fancy. But, the flipside of the author's depth of detail is that it allows you a glimpse into the kinds of complexities and even paradoxes that occur in the human metabolism (and how different those reactions can be even from those taking place in mice and monkeys).

DeGrey's major beef, in a nutshell, with the R&D community is that they are spending waaay too much time and energy trying to "understand" the complexities of why aging, cell damage, dysfunction, and diseases arise over time as bi-products of simply living life.He argues that we need a more targeted engineering approach -- simply FIND the damage after it has occurred, define what that damage is, and then GO FIX IT.These are much simpler problems to solve. As an analogy, look at what we do to preserve any machine or system. You can see a 100-year old house has holes in the roof; go patch them. While you're at it some new caulking around the windows, maybe some more insulation in the attic, some anti-termite spray, and there you go, good for another 100 years.

DeGrey envisions periodic therapies, say once per decade or so (similar to immunization schedules, for example) where individuals would receive viral injections and/or gene therapy to kill cancer cells, untangle proteins that cause alzheimers and the like, and remove calcification and stiffening from arteries and veins, generally restoring the body to a state of youthful vitality.

It is not nearly as "crazy as it sounds", but the fact remains that the large amounts of govt. and even private funding of such activities are not directed at "aging" per se, but rather at specific foundations devoted to one disease or another -- in other words, massive investment into cryptic treatments directed at helping a very very small percentage of the population.A paradigm shift is needed.

To his credit, and despite wild claims if 1,000-year "potential lifespans" and the like, DeGrey and Rae do not balk at frank discussions of the complexity that some of these treatments entail, or the failures that have plagued researchers along the way. The point is that progress IS being made now, and much more will come in the future, but at a pace that will be determined by focus, funding, and technological progress.

This book ties in well with books on nanotechnology and futurism. As others have said, we are about to enter a golden age of engineering *applications* that were undreamed of a century ago. We discovered quantum physics 100 years ago, but people are now building quantum computers. We first described the human DNA double-helix in 1953, have already sequenced many entire human genomes, and are well on the way to engineering with genetics, even building machines made from DNA.

We can now touch each individual molecule and cell in the body, so why can't we repair enough of them to keep the body functional indefinitely as a whole? It really isn't crazy at all.

With a New Afterword

Must We Age?

Nearly all scientists who study the biology of aging agree that we will someday be able to substantially slow down the aging process, extending our productive, youthful lives. Dr. Aubrey de Grey is perhaps the most bullish of all such researchers. As has been reported in media outlets ranging from 60 Minutes to The New York Times, Dr. de Grey believes that the key biomedical technology required to eliminate aging-derived debilitation and death entirely-technology that would not only slow but periodically reverse age-related physiological decay, leaving us biologically young into an indefinite future-is now within reach.

In Ending Aging, Dr. de Grey and his research assistant Michael Rae describe the details of this biotechnology. They explain that the aging of the human body, just like the aging of man-made machines, results from an accumulation of various types of damage. As with man-made machines, this damage can periodically be repaired, leading to indefinite extension of the machine's fully functional lifetime, just as is routinely done with classic cars. We already know what types of damage accumulate in the human body, and we are moving rapidly toward the comprehensive development of technologies to remove that -damage. By demystifying aging and its postponement for the nonspecialist reader, de Grey and Rae systematically dismantle the fatalist presumption that aging will forever defeat the efforts of medical science.

Review of Dr. Atkins' Age-Defying Diet (Paperback)

Dr Atkins has synthesized all off the latest research on nutrition and aging and has put together a up-to-date plan to help extend your life and improve the quality too. This is the best book on the subject since thebestselling classic, Life Extension, by Dirk Pearson and Sandy Shaw, fromthe late '70's.The difference with Atkins book though, is that he cites alot of credible research that will become accepted at some point by themedical community. He is ahead of his time as usual. The gist of the bookis to tell readers what steps they need to take to promote heart and brainhealth, mostly through diet and readily available nutritional supplements. He contends that many of the most common diseases can be delayed or avoidedby following his regimen. This is an important book, a gift from Dr.Atkins to people interested in their own healthful longevity.

Review of The South Beach Diet Supercharged: Faster Weight Loss and Better Health for Life (Paperback)

If you have never read The South Beach Diet, buy this book instead: It's much more helpful due to the exercise section and latest research on healthy eating and physical activity. If you already have a copy of The South Beach Diet, you need to buy this one as well so you can do the exercises.

I'm a big fan of The South Beach Diet. It helped me lose a lot of weight when nothing else worked. I felt comfortable losing the weight and looked great when I was done, rather than like a survivor of starvation. Whenever I gained a bit of weight since then, returning to Phase 1 quickly took it off.

But there was a problem: I clearly wasn't exercising enough. In the past, I've done a lot of walking and weight lifting . . . but I didn't get much benefit in terms of medical measures like reduced triglycerides. In fact, eating oatmeal and taking omega-3 supplements does more for my cholesterol level than exercise. I know that I need something different.

My eyes opened wide when I got to the section of this book that talked about how moderate amounts of walking (20 minutes every other day) with short intervals of fast movement spaced between moderate walking would do me more good for burning fat than doing all that walking that I used to do at one speed. Now, that sounded great!

Between walking days, you do some moderate body toning. Here is where I had some concerns about the book: The photographs show a lot of stress being put on the back. That's not a good idea for me: I have back problems. I'm not quite sure what to do, but I've ordered the DVD to see how these exercises are to be done and hope there will be detailed instructions there for people with bad backs.

In this book, Dr. Agatston does a good job of describing the various physical ills in joints and feet that baby boomers develop from the wrong kinds of activity and exercise. He even helped me understand how I create vast shoulder pain when I shovel snow the wrong way . . . and now I know what not to do.

If you are under 30, you can probably use this book just as is. If you are older, be careful with the body toning!

The remainder of the book is the same wonderful material on eating good carbs and good fats while avoiding bad carbs and bad fats . . . plus the latest validations of scientific research supporting the assumptions underlying the diet. There are lots of phase 1 and phase 2 recipes, and you can buy separate cookbooks if you want more.

But the best part of the book comes in reading the personal testimonies. They make the book come alive.

Great work!
