Review of The Red Wine Diet (Paperback)

This interesting book might have been more accurately titled "The Procyanidin Diet", but that would probably not help sales.Furthermore, it is not a weight loss book, or just a book about red wine.

Author and UK researcher Roger Corder makes a persuasive case in the book for the many health benefits of diet high in procyanidins, one of the phenols found in red wine, chocolate, apples, cinnamon and other plant sources. He gives specific recommendations for wines and foods, as well as recipes, that are high in procyanidins. It is possible to follow his recommendations without drinking any wine at all, but probably not as enjoyable.

Oddly enough, procyanidins are produced by plants in their skins and seeds for protection from rot and insects, and not for human benefit. Corder makes a convincing case that wine procyanidins are the solution to the "French Paradox" rather than the highly touted resveratrol; and their benefits to the human circulatory system have also been identified in certain red wine drinking populations in Sardinia, Crete, and Sicily, as well as Southwestern France. Other confirming evidence comes from the Kuna natives of Panama who drink large quantities of cocoa containing a similar dose of procyanidins, and who achieve the similar beneficial health effects.

Corder rates many red wines from * to ***** in order of their measured procyanidin content, with his highest ratings going to tannic and acidic wines such as tannat grape wines from the Madiran region of France. These wines tend to be the kind you want to drink with food.He suggests that two glasses of these highest rated wines give you 250-500 milligrams(mg) of procyanidins, his recommended dose per day for optimum health benefits.Since the procyanidins come from the grape skin and seeds, and they deteriorate over time, the highest concentrations are found in younger wines fermented for weeks in contact with the skins and seeds. As a general rule he found higher levels in Cabernet Sauvignon wines.

Corder also rates various foods in terms of his 4 oz glass of "good" procyanidin wine which contains about 60 mg.For instance:

2 Tbs. unsweetened cocoa powder (non alkali processed)
1 Tsp. cinnamon powder
1 apple
1/2 cup raspberries
1/2 cup cranberries
1.5 oz walnuts

All the above foods rate equivalent to Corder's "good" glass of red wine, so any four of them together would give you about 250 mg of procyanidins, his recommended minimum daily dose.Note that the estimate of the typical USA consumption of procyanidins is less than 100 mg per day, mainly from chocolate and apples.Corder argues that you should eat a diet with many sources of procyanidins because of the complexity of the chemistry and our incomplete knowledge of all the potential benefits.

Corder's book made me rethink the way I select wine and many foods.

Product Description
The best kid-friendly recipes and guide to the gluten-free milk-free diet for ADHD and Autism. What it is.Why it works. How to do it.
The Centers for Disease Control reports significant increases in Autism and ADHD - both affecting primarily boys. The CDC estimates that 1 out of 175 children (age 4 to 17) currently have Autism (300,000).Before 1985, Autism occurred in less than 1 out of 2000. ADHD is much more common in that it affects 4.4 million U.S. children (age 4 to 17).
Common to both of these conditions is the negative impact of certain foods - especially milk products and glutens such as wheat(and to a lesser degree - soy and corn.) One of the challenges that parents face is coping with children who have picky appetites and crave the very foods that affect their behavior, focus and development. The other challenge is finding ways to get their children to eat healthy foods and improve their nutritional status.
The uniqueness of this! book is that it not only provides gluten-free milk-free substitutes and recipes, it provides successful suggestions for feeding the picky eater. The authors share details about just how and why the diet works. The specialty ingredients are explained and extensive sources provided. There are also testimonials from the parents and from the children themselves.

Review of Rawsome!: Maximizing Health, Energy, and Culinary Delight With the Raw Foods Diet (Paperback)

This is the single best reference and recipe book in one that I've found thus far. Mars provides a detailed food-by-food breakdown of nutrients as well as suggesting what conditions this food may help heal. Her recipes are practical, relatively easy to assemble and appealing. The strongest point in her favor for me, the only raw eater in my household, is that many of her recipes make only 2 servings, thus making Rawsome! an excellent choice for singles or couples who prefer not to have to downsize recipes.

Mars also summarizes five classic studies supporting raw foodism as well as recommending three titles for those wishing to explore the scientific support more extensively. I'd suggest Gabriel Cousens' Conscious Eating for people wanting more scientific support with recipes.

The most annoying drawback for me for a number of Mars' more appealing recipes is the unbelievable amount of time required to soak, drain, soak, drain, and dehydrate ingredients before you can even begin to assemble the dish. And then, my little bitty dehydrator often takes well over 24 hours to do its work. Too much hassle for me! (To be fair, however, lengthy preptime is common for quite a few recipes in all-inclusive raw recipe books.)

Nevertheless, there are many usable recipes in Rawsome! Consequently, it's still the best all-around raw recipe book I've found, easily the equivalent of Betty Crocker's "big red" binder cookbook.

Product Description
A raw foods diet advocates exactly that: eating raw foods. No cooking, no grilling, no steaming, no application of high temperatures. Why? Because eating food closest to its natural state engenders a tremendous exchange of energy between food and body. The result, over time, is a feeling of buoyant, radiant health. Tackling head-on the skepticism likely to greet proponents of what the world sees as a "fad" diet, renowned nutritional consultant and raw foods adherent Brigitte Mars presents historical data and scientific evidence confirming the efficacy of raw foods diets in: Supporting emotional stablity; Increasing energy levels; Clearing the skin; Boosting immune-system function; improving digestive function; Dispelling depression: Sustaing overall good health. In addition, Mars points out the environmental benefits of the raw foods diet, making a case for eating raw foods as a means of reducing waste, making the most of agricultural practice, and reducing the !human footprint on the earth. Whether the reader wants to jump right into an all-raw diet or just wants to introduce more raw foods into the diet, Mars offers gentle encouragement and practical instruction. Readers will find advice on planning a balanced diet to meet their nutritional needs, combining foods for best effect, presrving raw foods, equpping the raw kitchen, sprouting, juicing, and evey other technique that makes the raw foods diet simple, delicious, and healthful. In-depth profiles describe the nutritional and health benefits of hundreds of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seasonings. Perhaps most important, the author provides more than 200 kitchen-tested, real-people-approved raw foods recipes. Under Mar's instruction, readers will enjoy making everything from juices and shakes to salads, soupsdressings, yogurts, crackers, spreads, dips, vegetable burgers, curries, vegetable pastas, wraps, and more. And let's not forget desset: brownies, ice cream, lemon bars, fru!it leathers, pies, cakes, puddings, and other delectable treats. For people who want the vibrant energy and health that raw foods offe but don't want to give up the taste of good cooking, "Rawsome!" provides the answer.

Review of The 3-Apple-a-Day Plan: Your Foundation for Permanent Fat Loss (Paperback)

The Apple Diet is essentially a low fat diet with a twist. Dieters on the plan eat three apples a day - one prior to each meal.

The premise behind the diet is a simple one. You eat an apple that fills you up with fiber, water and other nutrients and thus reduce your appetite. Apples pack a lot of benefits in a low calorie package.

This plan also includes a moderate calorie, low fat diet. Sample 1500 day includes apple, omelet, and oatmeal for breakfast, non fat cottage cheese and non fat yogurt for a snack. Chicken, broccoli, brown rice and apple for lunch, cappuccino shake for mid afternoon snack and dinner of salmon salad and you guessed it - an apple.

The plan also includes lots of exercise. Cardiovascular, and weight training with squats, lunges, chest presses etc.

The book makes it sound easy. Just eat your apples and voila..simple weight loss. In truth the plan would be very difficult for the average person looking to lose lbs. to stick with for the long haul and keep the weight off.

The diet reminds me of Bill Phillips initial Body for Life plan only not as good. Bill's initial diet included eating very clean ie chicken breast, brown rice, non starchy veggies etc. but it allowed for more fat. The Apple Diet plan is under 20% fat. Bill's plan has also expanded to include his new Eating For Life cookbook with tons of great tasting recipes. The recipes are far more interesting and easy to stick to than the ones in the Apple Diet.

Bill also allows for one cheat night. With the Apple Diet you get nothing..Nada..no chocolate, no ice cream, no dippin dots. Just grilled this or steamed that. How boring is that!
So yes this will work if you are hard core ready for intense clean eating. But if you want a little bit more laxity and interest try Bill's plan instead or if you are the average Mr. or Ms. trying to lose weight, up your protein some for satiation, count your calories but don't worry about being quite so perfect every day.

Another drawback to the plan is the apples. I like apples but THREE a day! Everyday!....hmmm could this diet be sponsored by companies like the Washington Apple Growers? Could this be a thinly disguised attempt to sell more apples.

Indeed we all agree that they have fiber and are good for us. BUT 3 per day?

Bottomline if you can eat very clean for the rest of your life and 3 apples every day..then this may be the perfect diet for you. If not...pick another plan.

Review of The Fat Flush Plan (Hardcover)

I bought this book, along with the cookbook, on Amazon a month ago and followed the diet plan closely for the first two weeks (I lost 13lbs.) and loosely for another 7-10 days for a total weight loss of 27lbs.It is not the easiest diet to follow, as the flax oil tastes really icky and the flaxseed fiber supplement drink is equally hard to swallow, but if you actually do what the author suggests, you Will lose weight. What I found the most difficult was eating eggs without salt and topping my protein portions with the flax oil as suggested.I think (I cannot prove it with personal research), that flax oil is much the same as linseed oil. It's not the initial taste, but the lingering aftertaste that put me off.I did learn how to cut back on carbs, fats and sodium (it's amazing what you can do with mustard and hot sauce) and did manage to modify my long term dietary intake, but after a month, I wanted to taste a grilled steak with garlic salt and maybe even a touch of butter, not to mention a crusty bit of bread! If you are more committed and have more willpower than I do, you can really lose a significant amount of weight on this plan and alter your palate.I have maintianed my weight loss (except for 4 lbs.), which is probably water weight due to increased sodium intake) and am very happy with the plan.I did lose a good amount of weight and learned alot on how to control portions and refined carbs without any real discomfort. The cookbook has lots of really good recipes, most of which could be elevated to stardom with some off-limits additions of butter! The mock mashed potatoes, using cauliflower was a real hit in my household and is still something I will fix regularly. This is an effective but not entirely painless diet plan suited for someone with real dedication.I thank the author sincerely for the many pounds I lost initially and for the good advice that I continue to follow. It's worth trying, especially if you have 20+ lbs. to lose!

Review of Diabetes Type 2: Complete Food Management Program (Paperback)

If you are looking for a good book on what Type 2 diabetes is about then this book is the one for you.As a new to diabetes patient I was looking for some real tips and depth on how to manage my eating and diet. This book did not offer anything new that you could not find in other sources or the internet.
It is well laid out and written with a good beginners guide on how various food intereact with your body.It has all the basics you need to understand what is going on with your body. Also some very basic guide lines on Calorie intact and exercise.
But to call it a Complete Food Mangement Program is a bit misleading.I was expecting more indepth talks about the relation ship between meal time and blood sugars.More indepth about how exercise works in conjuction with proper eating and keeping your blood sugar lower. I realize that everyone is different in terms of what the basic needs are, but more numbers would have been nice.

Review of The Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics: A Philosophy for Achieving a Radiant Mind and a Fabulous Body (Paperback)

I had been considering trying macrobiotics for a few years before it became trendy and this book was released. The first books I consulted were by Kushi and incredibly dry; they made it seem too challenging; focusing on foods I could not find and appliances that needed to be bought in order to start. Then I read Jessica Porter's book and it convinced me to take the plunge.

Her writing is accesiible and she includes entertaning anecdotes from her experience with discovering macrobiotic philosophy. Hte personal conversation stlye makes the information easier to remember and apply than other texts. She makes macrobiotics seem posisble for any one, any where they live. I do not live near a thriving organic community, but she supplies a wide range of resources, online stores, helpful web sites and other useful books to help in the transition. Though she was trained at the Kushi Institute, she gives readers knowledge of the full range of approaches that exist.

Did you know that there is a macrobiotic equivalent to Reese's peanut butter cups? She gives the recipes for these, as well as other deserts for special occasions, in addition to the staple dishes that constitute a macrobiotic eating system.I do wish tht the book had more recipes, and found the book "Cook Your Way to the Life You Want" and Cooking Whole Foods" by Christina Pirello excellent complements. They are not necessary additions, but Porter made me eager to read much more about macrobiotics.

Macrobiotics is learning how to balance food to meet your body's nutritional needs, which will vary depending on your daily activities and stress. It tkaes a life time to master, but Porter provides excellent ropes to help you start immediately, if you so wish. She also provides a gradual (her recommended) approach. An excess of sweets, for example, is not recommended as healthy on average, but she give recipes for safer alternatives to combat cravings caused by mass marketing campaigns of the food industry, as you being your journey into macrobiotics.

There were times when I thought the book indulged a little too much into "feel the power of the universe" rhetoric, but the truth of the matter is that what you eat affects not only your health, but also your moods, and an improved diet helps increase your powers of perception, by making you less vitim to illenss and mood fluctuations.

There are some macro books that I have purchased and had to read again and again, because they were so complicated. This one I reread because I enjoy and am inspired by the writing.

Review of Low-Fat Living Cookbook: 250 Easy, Great-Tasting Recipes (Paperback)

This book is the best cookbook I have ever used! My physician told me I needed to cut down on fat and calories, and suggested this cookbook. I just knew I wouldn't like any of it, because almost all the low-fat cookbooks I have ever seen list not-so-common ingredients, and the food tastes bad, and so on. Boy, was I wrong!
This cookbook starts off by giving diet tips and information, not too much, just a few pages. These were some of the tips I just heard on CBS Early Show Health Series. I discussed them with my weight-loss counselor, too, and all were ones they do recommend.
The receipes are simple, easy to prepare, and took only minutes. I was astounded that this cookbook didn't list a lot of salads, like most low-fat ones do. These are everyday foods, and you don't even know they are low-fat. In fact, like a few other reviewers, my husband still doesn't know he's eating "diet" food. In fact, the other day, he said he knew I had been going to a cooking school because the food I prepared now was sooo much better. In reality, I have been going to a weight-loss clinic, and never told him because of the fear of failure.
I now have quit those clinics, and totally rely on this cookbook. I weighed 224, and now have lost 80 pounds. I haven't been hungry and with these recipes, you can eat all you want. That's what is recommended. I also never etr tired of them because there are sooo many and each one can be prepared soo many different ways, it doesn't taste like the same receipe.
Get this cookbook today. I know the money you spend on it WILL come back to you...almost immediately!

Review of The 5-Factor Diet (Paperback)

I will preface my review by noting that I have a full time job in a "professional" (management) atmosphere.I'm also a full time student at university, as well as member of the armed forces.I'm married, and I participate in extracurricular activities such as the performing arts and volunteer work.In a nutshell...I am a BUSY person. Also, I'm certainly no movie star or any other kind of star.I have found a way to MAKE this lifestyle work for me.It was a tremendous adjustment, and there are days that I'm very frustrated. However, the improvement in my overall well-being, as well as that of my husband, is worth every moment spent in the kitchen.

The most important thing to realize about this plan is that YOU are in control. No one counts for you...no one cooks for you...you are responsible for the menu choices you make, etc.I've been living this lifestyle for almost a year, and I will address two of the chief complaints I've heard about the eating plan.

1)"I don't have time to do the cooking...I need a professional chef!"First off, I am not a professional chef, and neither is my husband. We don't pay for anyone to come in and prepare our meals for us.Every Sunday, which is the "free" day we've chosen for ourselves, we go out and do the grocery shopping. We purchase all the ingredients we will need for the week. Then we go home and TOGETHER we prepare four of the meals for the next day.We select menu options that will be easy to reheat or require no reheating.(Quesadillas, pears with peanut butter, and the pita sandwiches are all favorite choices.)The next day, I use the microwave in the office breakroom to prepare my specialized meals.I don't take a break; I'm fortunate enough to have my own office and I simply eat my "snacks" at my desk. That evening when I get home, my husband and I share the time together to prepare dinner. After dinner, we take about an hour or so and prepare the next day's meals. This routine repeats itself Monday through Friday.Saturdays are nice because I have my own kitchen. However, if I know I'm going to have a busy Saturday, I prepare easy "on-the-go" meals the night before.I have read both of Harley's books, and I know the foods that are "five-factor" friendly, so if I happen to have a lunch meeting or dinner date, I order the appropriate meal from the restaurant I'm at.I usually also ask for a lunch portion so I'm not tempted to eat everything placed before me.(*Note:Most of the meals take five minutes to "prepare."This does NOT include cooking time.Read the recipes. If you don't have time to prepare a certain one in a certain amount of time, DON'T prepare it.)

2)"The ingredients are too expensive (or too hard to find)!"No they're not.I figure that with thirty meals a week, and spending approximately $120 on groceries per week, I'm spending four dollars a meal. That is cheaper than a fast food salad.Yes, some products are pricier than others.Sometimes I can't find a particular ingredient for a meal I really want to prepare.Well...YOU'RE in charge here.Select something different that is more within your price range. How much is your personal health worth, anyway?

Harley does not promote unhealthy habits such as diet pills, fasts, or diet shakes. He encourages lots of water intake. He promotes cardiovascular fitness coupled with strength training, which promotes general fitness and can help with bone density.(My husband and I choose to do a little more than he recommends, but we started out at the prescibed amount of exercise.)He explains the dangers of some artificial sweeteners and makes recommendations. However, he doesn't DEMAND you use a certain brand; he empowers you through the information provided to make an educated personal choice. He teaches about the science of certain foods and how they can help you feel fuller longer.I truly enjoyed READING this book. He's funny, and want's YOU to be in charge. There's a lot of good information, and I felt smarter about my health after reading it.It basically takes the US Dietary Guidelines (the food pyramid) and puts it into recipes FOR YOU, so you're getting what you need.

If you're not willing to make a significant change in your lifestyle, this plan is definitely not for you.If you're looking for a fad diet that will force you to lose weight fast, this plan is not for you.

He's laid the plan out so it's virtually fail-proof, and teaches you it's okay to "fall off the wagon."I can't tell you how much this book has changed my life...between my husband and I, we have lost over 60 pounds. But it didn't happen in a month, and it certainly didn't happen in a week.We followed the plan, exactly as written, for five entire weeks. This plan improved the way I FELT, because I was smarter about my eating choices; losing weight was a bonus!I felt so good that I MADE it work for my crazy busy life, and I'm delighted!

I've recommended this book to all my friends, and will recommend it to you as well.

Review of Healthy Helpings: 800 Fast and Fabulous Recipes for the Kosher (or Not) Cook (Paperback)

This cookbook by Norene Gilletz excites me so much that I don't know where to start in sharing a review with you.If you don't have it, get it....as fast as you can!
The cookbook covers so much that everyone is sure to find something that satisfies within the 411 pages of recipes -- 800 recipes no less!Did you see that?800 recipes are included in the easy to read, colorful to look at, several recipes with photos of several dishes in each photo. The photos are all in one place and I think I like that very much. The title reads "800 Fast and Fabulous Recipes for the Kosher (or Not) Cook".I am not a Kosher cook but I have found so many recipes that I know I will use over and over again. But for those who ARE Kosher cooks, you will be very happy with this cookbook also. There is a whole section on holidays and celebrations that I'm sure will be helpful to you.
You can tell Norene Gilletz knew what she was doing in designing this cookbook. In the beginning she acknowledges all those who have helped her with ideas or tested recipes. She credits her Mother as one of several who inspired and taught her, or encouraged and advised her.She had willing taste testers and even had a focus group to keep her apprised of what people want and "need to know in today's kitchen".
"Healthy Helpings" is a healthy cookbook so for those who look for the nutritional analysis, you will be happy to know it is included with each recipe. There is a whole page of guidelines Norene used to analyze her recipes.I personally found it very helpful to know things like "4 to 6 servings" was analyzed for 4 servings or "optional ingredients and garnishes in unspecified amounts were not calculated".These are the questions that sometimes puzzle those who are trying hard to figure closely all the nutritional analysis.
As any thorough cookbook author would include, there is a list of staples for a healthy kitchen and it includes oils/vinegars, mayonnaise/salad dressings, dried legumes, tomato products, canned vegetables/legumes/fruits/fish/soups, pastas/grains/cereals, snack foods/cookies/crackers, breads/bread crumbs, beverages/juices/miscellaneous, anddried herbs & spices, baking supplies. There is also a section on perishables, frozen foods and herbs. There is so much information under each of the staple items and so much "healthy" information listed before you even get to the first recipe!I really like this in a cookbook!
The format of "Healthy Helpings" recipes is done in a single list of ingredients with directions below. There are two columns on each page, which seems to afford extra room to get more recipes per page. The print is large enough to read and is a nice feature without a feeling of paper wasting as in some of the other cookbooks I've bought lately -- the kind with large fonts and only one recipe per page and an obvious waste of paper. But not "Healthy Helpings"!I have the feeling that there was so much information to include that Norene and her publisher, Woodland Publishing, figured out the best way to get the most print on a page without it looking too crowded, etc.
Almost all of the recipes have the little friendly paragraph at the beginning of a recipe that we all love to read -- the little hint of origin or inspiration for that particular recipe. That feature means a lot to those who like to read cookbooks like they read novels (I'm one of them!).
I collect cookbooks and have thousands of them, but this is one that we will use over and over.In fact, I have made several of the recipes already and some even twice and I've only had the cookbook just a few weeks! My favorites so far are:
Chunky Monkey
Grilled Orange Teriyaki Chicken
Teriyaki Asparagus
Israeli Salad
Rainbow Rice Pilaf (the first recipe I tried from Healthy Helpings)
There are many other recipes I have marked to try so I already know this cookbook is going to take a prominent place on the cookbook shelves near the kitchen, probably next to Norene's "Food Processor Bible", which we use a lot also.In fact, I have loaded this cookbook with bookmarks and post-it flags to help me find the next recipe I want to try.
Another good thing -- the recipes call for ingredients that most of us already have in our cupboards. When I feel inspired to try a new recipe I can reach for "Healthy Helpings" and know I will most likely have all the ingredients on hand to make a healthy and satisfying dish.
I highly recommend "Healthy Helpings" as an addition to your cookbook shelf. At $19.99 it's affordable and makes a nice gift for yourself or to someone you'd like to help on their way to a more healthy lifestyle.I'm including the recipe for "Israeli Salad" below. Not only is it delicious and healthy, but it is also a very pretty dish to have on your dinner table.
Israeli Salad
1 head of Romaine or iceberg lettuce
4 green onions
1 medium onion
2 green peppers
1 red pepper
1 English cucumber, peeled
8 firm, ripe tomatoes (preferably Israeli)
4 Tablespoons olive oil (preferably extra-virgin)
4 Tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon sale (or to taste)
Freshly ground pepper, optional
Wash and dry vegetables well.Dice them neatly into 1/2-inch pieces and combine in a large bowl.Sprinkle with olive oil and lemon juice.Add seasonings; mix again.Adjust seasonings to taste.
Yield:8 servings.Salad tastes best eaten the same day it is made, but leftovers will keep for a day in the refrigerator. Drain off excess liquid in the bottom of the bowl before serving.
Note:This recipe makes quite a lot so either halve the recipe or invite someone over to help eat it.

Review of The Liver-Cleansing Diet (Paperback)

After coming back from holidays 3kg heavier than my NORMAL 92kg (206lbs) (which is over 15kgs more than my recommended body weight to my height of 5'8") I put myself onto Dr Cabot's Liver-Cleansing Diet on a days notice. Why did I choose the LCD?I didn't have to sign up on anything or go to groups or meetings etc.I had a list of what I could eat and what I couldn't eat and I stuck to it like a zealot. In the course of the eight weeks I lost 13kg's (29lbs) getting myself down from 95kgs to 82kgs (183lbs)!
This proved to me that not only was I well and truly overweight but that my eating habits were absolutely shocking and needed a change.AND I did not starve myself either.I did try to modify the amount of food I ate because not only was the problem what I was eating, but how much, but I never starved myself or went hungry. If I felt like something to eat out of normal meals I would just blend up a banana & soya milk smoothie with frozen bananas and a dollop of natural honey (try it!).
I have two recommendations for people doing this diet.
1: Stick to it religiously, if you allow yourself butter here and there or some greasy chips at a party you will find it too easy to stray from the diet.Dr Cabot says in the book you are allowed the odd indiscretion, but I found for me personally it had to be all or nothing.
2: If you have a partner (wife/husband/etc) then they really should do it as well because the temptation is great to have the food they get to eat.I know this now because I am on the diet for a second time to try and get my weight to around 77kg (172lbs) but my wife is not joining me AS MUCH as the first time round because she doesn't need too (55kg).Seeing that bottle of coke when you are reaching for that soy milk, or that block of cheese sitting next to that block of tofu makes for some mighty effort in willpower but I am sticking to my guns!
Good luck!

Review of Your Miracle Brain: Maximize Your Brainpower, Boost Your Memory, Lift Your Mood, Improve Your IQ and Creativity, Prevent and Reverse Mental Aging (Paperback)

This is the third Jean Carper book I have read, and I was delighted to find so much new information to help postpone the effects aging.Like most of us, I have always assumed the conventional belief that the aging brain simply deteriorates. This is not true. Not only does Ms. Carper's newbook examine the latest scientific evidence showing how simplistic thatnotion is, but she goes on to identify many of the practical things each ofus can do to develop new health habits that will improve our mentalfunctions."Your Miracle Brain" will certainly be a best seller, but moreimportantly, it will transform the way our minds think about our brains.

Review of Outwit Your Weight Journal: Lose Weight and Keep It Off with this Personalized Weight-Loss Diary (Paperback)

The book "Outwit Your Weight" by Cathy Nonas, R.D. was so jam packed with easy to follow new tips and ideas for managing weight I picked up her companion book, the "Outwit Your Weight Journal".
Studies show that the best tool for weight loss success is journaling. In one study it was shown that people gain as much as 500% more weight during the holiday season than during non-holiday weeks. But a few folks actually lost weight during the holidays. Who were these lucky people? The folks who kept journals.Another study showed that folks who kept food journals for 15 weeks lost 64% more weight than those who didn't!
Journaling can be key to a successful weight loss journey. Knowing how important this tool is Cathy developed the "Outwit Your Weight Journal". This is very different from your traditional journals. In this book Cathy works with you to customize a journal style that will meet your needs and that you will actually "do" to meet your weight loss goals.
Some journals focus on calorie counting, others on exercise or fat grams. Cathy's book focuses on what YOU need.
The book begins with a simple self assessment of your diet danger zones. Do you nibble to much. Eat when you are lonely or bored. Eat when you read or eat due to medications?
And what is your weight loss personality? Are you a restrained eater with periods of extreme eating styles? Are you an ostrich -in denial about what you eat?
Once you have identified your eating personality, Cathy introduces 6 different types fo journals that may suit your needs. She gives charts to fill in for the different styles.
You can stick to one type of journal or switch as your needs change.
Cathy also gives a lot of other information in the book. She includes "smart strategies" to make the best use of journaling. A full section is devoted to developing goals. Guidelines are given for exercise.
The one drawback to this softcover book is that it doesn't lay flat so writing in it can be awkward. But I think the author intends for it to be used as a stepping stone. That you try out different journal styles (or find one instantly) and use that style in a blank book or copy the pages.
By personalizing a journal to suit your needs and finding the journal style you are comfortable with you are more likely to use journaling which has led so many to weight loss success!

Review of 50 Secrets of the World's Longest Living People (Paperback)

What can we learn from the world's longest living people? Plenty!

We all know people who have gotten older and yet they've seemed to slow down the process of aging. I met a woman the other day that looked like she was maybe 60 years old, but she was actually 90 years old! Her son is a friend of mine and he looked like he could be her brother.

It's amazing how these human bodies of ours are such resilient structures that some people can live much longer than others. Don't you wish you could get to the very essence of what makes some people live longer, healthier lives? What are those deep-down secrets to extending life just a few more years?

Well, look no more than "50 Secrets Of The World's Longest Living People" written by Sally Beare for the answers. Beare is a self-taught nutritionist whose health was greatly improved after a visit to a nutritionist following some rather strange physical reactions happening in her body. Once those conditions were improved by changes in her diet, she set out to discover exactly what people need to do to improve their health through diet and lifestyle changes.

Part One of this book takes you to the five "longevity hotspots" in the world where people live long, healthy lives without the need for a prescription pill to cure every ailment under the sun. The pharmaceutical industry doesn't want you to read "50 Secrets Of The World's Longest Living People" because it exposes their public scam for what it is. But you would be wise to take a closer look at what people in these various countries (and no, the United States is not one of the "hotspots") are doing to extend the length and quality of their lives.

Beare lays it all out for you in simple-to-read language with a convenient "Dos" and "Don'ts" list at the end of each chapter on the "hotspots." You'll quickly notice a lot of similarities in these lists that will zoom in specifically on what we all can do to improve our health and, thus, lengthen our lifespan.

Although I am an advocate of a low-carb lifestyle change after my nearly 200-pound weight loss on low-carb, not everything in Part Two of this book matches up with what I believe is best for me nutritionally. But these 50 principles are not all meant to be followed word-for-word in their entirety. Instead, you should select the ones that fit into your lifestyle needs and apply them appropriately.

Some of the ones I took notice of that coincide with people who are livin' la vida low-carb include eating 5-7 servings of fruits and vegetables daily, use hemp for its fiber and essential fatty acids, eat organic goat's cheese, consume eggs, eat the good fats found in fish, have a handful of nuts and seeds daily, choose extra virgin olive oil, keep aging away with a salad a day, find long life in a bowl of berries, eat yogurt for very friend bacteria, eat more organic and avoid "frankenfoods," avoid the pastries, drink lots of water -- the most essential nutrient, take vitamin supplements especially CoQ10, exercise daily, believe in God, laugh often, help other people, avoid the Standard American Diet (SAD for short), get adequate sleep, and much, much more!

Every single one of the "50 Secrets Of The World's Longest Living People" are expanded upon in great detail by Beare as she shows you how to implement them into your own life to help you live longer, too!

Finally, in Part Three of the book, Beare shares how you can put all of her advice together to work for you. You can call this the "Cliff's Notes" section of the book where she basically summarizes everything you have already read in the previous chapters, including tips and actual recipes from those infamous "hotspots" where people live longer. You will want to reference this book again and again as you seek to live a long, healthy, and prosperous life.

"50 Secrets Of The World's Longest Living People" is a book that should be in every home, school, and library in the United States of America. If it was, then I assure you that radical changes would take place in obesity, sickness, prescription drug use, sugar consumption, the fast food industry and so much more. Once you take a peek into the lives of those who have found the secrets to extending life, you'll never want to go back to your old ways again!

Product Description
Today we are living longer than ever before, and a few of us can expect to live to 100 or more. But many people feel that they will inevitably suffer the diseases of old age in their final years. Pharmaceutical companies have spent billions of dollars trying to find a cure for the "diseases of aging"-they may have found ways to stem some of the symptoms, but they have yet to find a panacea.
Yet there are places in the world where, all along, people have commonly lived to 100 or more without suffering so much as a headache. How do they do it? The answer is simple: through sound dietary habits and balanced, healthy lifestyles. The 50 Secrets of the World's Longest Living People looks at the nutrition and lifestyle mores of the world's five most remarkable longevity hotspots-Okinawa, Japan; Bama, China; Campodimele, Italy; Symi, Greece; and Hunza, Pakistan-and explains how we too can incorporate the wisdom of these people into our everyday lives. It offers each of the secrets in detail, provides delicious, authentic recipes, and outlines a simple-to-master plan for putting it all together and living your best, and longest, life.

Review of Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook: Everyday Meals, Easy as 1-2-3 (Hardcover)

I am completely baffled by this book and the reviews it has received! After only a few pages I was aghast and realized I had thrown my money away.
I am not a medical professional or scientist but all of my own personal research into diabetes and related blood disorders strongly recommend avoiding refined carbohydrates. This book is full of recipes using highly refined carbohydrates: white sugar and white flour.
I also found recipes containing an uncomfortably high percentage of calories from fat. I expected recipes emphasizing whole, low glycemic foods prepared in as close to their natural state as possible - foods that had as much of their beneficial properties (such as nutrients and fiber) intact. I was extremely disappointed by what this book had to offer and am sorry I bought it.

Product Description
At last! This special cookbook puts flavor and choice back on the menu for people with diabetes and their families
Betty Crocker, America's most trusted friend in the kitchen, has teamed up with the International Diabetes Center (IDC)--one of the leading medical centers--to create an indispensable source of easy-to-make recipes and up-to-the-minute food and nutrition information for the growing numbers of people who have diabetes, more than 15 million of them.
Here is the first cookbook to include recipes featuring Carbohydrate Choices--the new, simplified approach to meal planning recommended by the American Diabetes Association. For people who find diet exchanges too hard, too limiting or too much work, this new method is a real breakthrough. Each of the book's 140 recipes shows the number of Carbohydrate Choices per serving, so that planning the rest of the meal is easy. From Old-Time Beef and Vegetable Stew to Creamy Vanilla-Caramel Cheesecake, the recipes are made with everyday ingredients, including sugar. No food groups or ingredients are left out, so there's no need for anyone to feel deprived or restricted to a special diet. Food exchanges are also included, making it easy for those who still count calories.
Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook is also packed with expert medical and nutrition tips from Dr. Richard Bergenstal, an endocrinologist and diabetes doctor, and two registered nurses--invaluable for the newly diagnosed as well as for those who have been coping with diabetes for years. Throughout the book, real-life advice from people who have diabetes offers inspiration and great ideas on dealing with this chronic disease. When it comes to eating and living with diabetes, people need guidance and advice they can trust.

Review of The Step Diet: Count Steps, Not Calories to Lose Weight and Keep It off Forever (Paperback)

I am a nut for healthy, weight-loss information so when I came across this book, I thought I would try it out.It was the best decision I've made.
I've always worked out for maybe 30-45 min. a day, but I would sit on my butt the rest of the day. This book had wonderful ideas on how to increase your movement throughout the day, not just in the 30 minutes I worked out.
My other problem is that I like food.I could not get used to the idea of giving up the food I like in order to lose weight.I think the best part of the book is the idea that you need to cut back on your food intake by 25% in order to acheive weight-loss.I eat what I like to eat, I just eat a little bit less at each meal.I have tried this over the past two weeks and I have lost 2 pounds and I am confident that they will stay off as long as I continue to follow the plan.
The pedometer is a great way to pace yourself throughout the day.I set goals for myself such as getting between 6000 and 7000 steps during work. It's a great way to keep moving.
It is not a quick, weight-loss gimmick or diet.I call it a "non-diet" because the authors offer ways to change your lifestyle in order to lose healthy amounts of weight in a reasonable timespan in order to acheive weight-loss for life.

Combining a book and pedometer--in itself a $20 value--plus conversion charts and dozens of fat-burning Step Recipes, this is a complete package. At its core is a simple concept called energy balance. Calories come in, calories go out--and when intake is greater than output, you gain weight. The Step Diet Book attacks the problem from both ends. First, use the pedometer to figure out how many steps you take in an average day, then raise the number by 2,000--it's as easy as pacing while talking on the phone, or parking at the far end of the lot. Second, eat one-quarter less of your food--which counteracts our tendency to supersize meals. Once balance is achieved, get fit and lose weight by adding more steps to your day. You can even enjoy a guilt-free lapse by knowing exactly how many steps to tack on at the end of your day.

Review of Trace Your Genes to Health: Use Your Family Tree to Guide Your Diet, Enhance Your Immune System and Overcome Chronic Disease (Paperback)

"Trace Your Genes to Health" is more than anything else an examination of the current state of the study of heredity and medicine. The author, Chris Reading, is a physician in Australia. After graduating from medical school he became qualified in psychiatry and specialized in organic psychiatry. From this point he began to notice the relationships between vitamin-mineral deficiencies, food allergies, and genetics as they affect neuropsychiatric disorders.Soon he was able to compile data to show that there are genetic factors in many, many problems that are not generally thought to be genetic in nature.Dr. Reading has distilled his years of experience and knowledge into this book.
It is not a book designed for self-diagnosis of problems and that is good. The book does an excellent job of explaining the basics of genetics and how the various types of dominant/recessive, autosomal, and X-linked factors work together to create a genetic pattern of inheritance.Throughout the book Dr. Reading builds a persuasive case for examining the family tree as part of a more holistic approach to health than just treating a symptom that occurs in your generation.Looking at the family history may reveal many clues as to how to treat a problem as well as how to avoid it altogether.
After discussing genetics and how it works Dr. Reading goes into the details of how to make a medical family tree.It includes the information you should be looking for, how to get the information, how to diagram it, and even how to approach your doctor with your findings. This is followed with a section on various illnesses and how they might have a genetic factor. The multiple appendices include information on Illnesses, categorized for family trees, symptoms and signs, congenital defects, phenotypes, sociological data, and recommendations to help you deal with problems.
"Trace Your Genes to Health" is a guide to help you take control of your health through investigating avenues that are generally overlooked. This would be a recommended book for anyone who has noticed a pattern of medical problems in their family and wants to know what can be done to help their doctor treat them.If you suspect that your family has had a pattern of medical problems and want to deal with it before it becomes a problem for you then this book will help you build the information necessary to determine if you need to be concerned or not.

Review of In 12 weeks You Can Control Your High Blood Pressure Without Drugs (Paperback)

'The book is upbeat, reading like the medical equivalent of a sermon from the Crystal Cathedral. The style is entertaining, friendly and motivating; so it's easy to read and reread. To follow The Program is to change one's lifestyle, not just one's diet. It is indeed, 'specific and comprehensive'. Not every reader will be able to adopt the upbeat life view which underlies it, but every reader will become more conscious of destructive things in his life which he should try to eliminate, and most of all learn a number of techniques for managing stress.
There is a good deal of well presented medical information in the book. Any patient with hypertension would profit by reading it. Some will be converted and 'go for it 100%'.'
Jean L. Cook, M.D. Office of the Dean (retired)

Review of Pillsbury Fast and Healthy Cookbook: 350 Easy Recipes for Every Day (Hardcover)

I bought this book when I got married in an effort to help my husband and I support a more healthy lifestyle (ok, we wanted to lose some weight!). This book has by far exceeded my expectations--i use it at least three to four times a week!
the highlights:
-meals that truly can be prepared quickly
-"normal" ingredients that I can find at a regular grocery store and won't sit in my fridge for months after using them once
-truly tasty recipes that rarely taste "lowfat"
-a wide variety of recipes with a multitude of flavors and tastes that suit both the adventureous eater or a more conservative palate.
-directions that are easy to follow with helpful information sidebars. Even you 'non-cooks' out there can use this book!
-It lists nutrition info with each recipe, so you know exactly how many calories and how much fat you're taking in with each dish.

The book is divided into sections for each type of food (ie chicken, fish, breads, etc), and it has a pretty good index in the back so it is easy to find things.
The only thing I would do different is that the entrees don't list suggestions for sides, which would be helpful for those of us who don't have an intuition for that sort of thing.
A book that does do this is "Make it in Minutes", a book by weight watchers that is my second favorite cookbook. Ignore the WW thing, and pick this book up too. It has some great recipes as well!

Review of The Thrive Diet (Paperback)

Thrive Diet is a relatively easy to follow program for athletes that have food allergies, are vegan, or just want to get their nutrition from whole foods. The hardest thing of going plants only is accepting you can get solid protein and nutrition. Thankfully, the author knows how to research and presents his findings dispassionately and with reason. The page on protein powders is worth the book itself. No where else have I found this information, and I've been looking through all vegan, vegetarian, and bodybuilding books. Keep in mind that this book is soy and tofu free, due to the author's concerns with allergies. That's a good thing. Tofu/Soy products are used MORE in N. America. I'm not anti-soy. Just pro-variety (and frankly soy hasn't gotten me to where I want to be anyhow.)

An important part of this book are the early chapters on different types of stress and how nutrition can assist recuperation. The author is not a big supplement taker, and focuses on nourishment rather than calories/protein/carbs counting. The recipes are simple to prepare. It's actually, dare I say it, kind of lazy food prep, minimal tools (food processor & blender), and maximum return. These are positives. Other vegan cookbooks have 20 steps, consume an hour of time and the end result is just a side dish. Of potatoes....

Now, the book is affordable, but there's a sticker shock that comes from going whole foods whole cloth. Thankfully I have a Whole Foods within 8 miles. They had most everything on the list, except yellow pea protein powder. The clerk said the co. that made that went bankrupt, so it's put a lot of folks in a lurch. My total bill? $227.00 The protein powders are about $15 each, the oils are around that price point, and maca and chlorella cost $15 a bottle.AND THIS IS WITH ALMOST NO PRODUCE OR VEGETABLES. $227. The upside is the convenience of Whole Foods having all this stuff. Nutrition costs...

I copied the shopping list to a pdf at orlandont dot com. Click on the Thrive link. Again, it's costly to just jump into it, so maybe transition using the energy bar recipes and grow from there.Still, this book is awesome and if you're serious about training or casually interested in losing weight or just understanding HOW your body functions, get this book.

Review of Sensational Stevia Desserts (Paperback)

I've been using only Stevia as a sweetener for almost 3 years, mainly added to beverages or cereal, but I was missing the occasional sweet treat.I have bought 5 Stevia books:David Richard's Stevia Rebaudiana, Jeffrey Goettemoeller's Stevia Sweet Recipes, James & Tanya Kirkland's Sugar-Free Cooking with Stevia, Rita DePuydt's Stevia, and Lisa Jobs Sensational Stevia Desserts. The Stevia information in all of the books is very helpful; however, Lisa Jobs' recipes have been the best over and over again. The ingredients are easily found in my grocery store, the recipes are easy to follow, but the best recommendation is that every recipe I've tried in this book has been delicious, including the non-fruit ones.Stevia has no problem sweetening recipes with fruit in them--even my sugar-loving husband can't tell the difference--but Stevia can be bitter if too much is used. Lisa Jobs, however, has come up with the right amount of Stevia to make a recipe yummy.I've successfully made and enjoyed her cobblers, pumpkin bars and pumpkin custard (taste and texture like pumpkin pie!), cookies, Rice Custard Pudding, and just today, her Chocolate-Peanut Butter Fudge II.After tasting that, I knew I had to recommend this wonderful Senstational Stevia Desserts cookbook to others on "no sugar added" diets (I can't say the same about more than one recipe in any of the other books). The nutritional information for each recipe is an added plus. I'd give this 10 stars if I could.I'm doing my Christmas baking now for teacher, neighbor, and friend gifts, and those (diabetics, dieters, and/or limiting sweets) who receive the goodies from this cookbook will not feel deprived!
